The Salina Police Department (SPD) has announced they are collaborating with Lakewood Discovery Center (LDC) to provide local children a day of fun by fishing with fellow law enforcement.
According to SPD, officer Mikayla Rix is teaming up with LDC to allow local children an experience to fish alongside other SPD officers, the Saline County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Wildlife and Parks and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The event called "Cops & Bobbers" will occur on Saturday, June 6 from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm at LDC (250 Lakewood Dr.)
Following the fishing event, officer Rix plans to hold a carnival-themed event featuring food trucks, inflatable bounce houses, outdoor games and other fun-filled events activities gathered toward children and families.
The fishing portion will run from 8:00 am - 11:00 am & the carnival-themed events will occur from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
According to Officer Rix, This collaboration between law enforcement and the community reflects a shared commitment to fostering positive relationships, encouraging outdoor recreation, and creating a safe, family-friendly environment for Saline County residents.
'The need for this event was identified through ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to build trust and positive relationships with youth and families in Saline County," said Rix. "In recent years, community feedback has highlighted the importance of creating family-friendly, inclusive spaces where children can engage with officers in a fun and relaxed environment. By combining recreation, mentorship, and education about outdoor stewardship, Cops & Bobbers addresses a local need for accessible community engagement opportunities that promote safety, trust, and unity."
This event has been operating for 10 years under the name "Fishing with a Cop."
"This project supports the Salina Police Department’s mission to provide equitable services and strengthen relationships with the citizens it serves, ultimately fostering a safer and more connected community across Saline County," said Rix.
Donations are encouraged to help ensure every child leaves the event with a prize. Donations whether monetary or items related to fishing, camping, the outdoors, or summer-related activities are accepted.
