Obituary | Letha Joy Garst of Mankato, Kansas | Melby Mortuary

August 21, 1932 - October 12, 2021

Letha Joy Garst, 89 years of age, of Mankato passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at the Jewell County Hospital. She was born August 21, 1932 in Otego, Kansas to Hugh and Ethel (Loomis) Modlin.

On November 8, 1950, Letha was united in marriage to James Garst. They celebrated 70 years of marriage a year ago November. To this union two children were born, Teresa and Randy.

Letha was a daycare provider, having taken care of many kids in the Mankato community. Letha and James also delivered the Salina Journal for many years.

Letha was a member of The First Baptist Church, Mankato, and American Legion of Scandia.

Her hobbies included playing rummy, cards, baking, word search, polka dancing, and most of all spending time with family and friends.

Letha is survived by her sister-in-law Shirley Hancock, Englewood, CO; brother-in-law Paul Garst (Darlene), Mankato, KS; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother Fred Modlin; and many nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James Garst,  daughter Teresa Garst, son, Randy Garst, sisters Phyllis O’Brien and Carrol Garst, and brothers Douglas and Curtis Modlin.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life Service will be held on 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 16, 2021 at The First Baptist Church in Mankato, Kansas with Pastor Kevin Wood officiating.

There will be a lunch served following the service. Then burial of cremains will follow in the Riverview Cemetery, Scandia, Kansas.
