John G. Mortimer passed away Friday, August 25, 2023, at Salina Regional Hospital. He was 90 years of age.
John was born to Carl G. and Lema W. (Welch) Mortimer.
He graduated from Gypsum Highschool with the class of 1951. He then spent 5 years as an equipment operator for Salina Sand Co. In the fall of 1956, John enrolled at his father’s alma mater, Kansas Wesleyan University. In 1960, he was hired to work at a local finance company. He served the company in Salina, KS before relocating to Wichita, KS and later Omaha, NE.
In 1961, while still working in Salina, John was set up on a blind date with Mary Jane Mason, of Kipp. They were later married, in October 1963 in Solomon, KS. Together they went back to Omaha, NE and shortly after made their way back to Salina, KS.
John retired from Security Savings in 1999, at the age of 66.After retirement, John, Mary Jane, her sister Lois and husband, Don, took a 10-day trip to Alaska. John often reminisced on his 3 summers spent in Emerald Isle, North Carolina. Here, him and Mary Jane rented a beach house and enjoyed their time together with their family.
John was frequently found gloating about his family. He was a proud father and (great)grandfather. John is preceded in death by sisters Barbara (Glen) Meyer, Delores and Sharon Mortimer. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 incredible years, Mary Jane (Mason) Mortimer of Solomon; sister Karen (Mike) Moore of Newbern, NC; son Kevin (Sheila) Mortimer of Solomon; daughter Kara (Chris) Brady of Salina; granddaughters Brianna (Derek) Nielsen of Emporia; Emma and Caroline Brady of Salina and grandson Garrett (Sydney) Mortimer; as well as great grandsons Elliot, Graham, and Callen Nielsen of Emporia. John was also extremely excited to welcome another great grandson this winter.
Visitation will be 4-6 pm August 31, 2023 at Ryan Mortuary.
Funeral service will be 10 am Friday, September 1, 2023, at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church with Fr. Kevin Weber as celebrant.
Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Solomon.
