AMARILLO, Texas – The Wind Surge allowed just one hit on the night as they cruised to an 8-1 victory Wednesday against the Amarillo Sod Poodles.
Unlike Tuesday night when the Surge did not score until the seventh inning, Wichita put up the first two runs of the game in the first two innings. After Spencer Steer drew a four pitch walk, Trey Cabbage brought Steer home with a double off the center field wall to give Wichita the early lead. Cabbage’s RBI double was his first RBI in a Wind Surge uniform. In the top of the second inning, BJ Boyd took the first pitch he saw and belted his third long ball of the year over the left field wall doubling the Wind Surge lead.
The duo called up from Cedar Rapids earlier in the week continued to make an impact in this game. With two on and one out in the top of the fifth inning, Spencer Steer blasted a three-run home run out of the park. Steer’s first home run for the Surge traveled 448 feet and was fired off his bat at 104 miles per hour.
In the next inning, BJ Boyd picked up another RBI off a line drive double to center field that scored D.J. Burt from first. Chris Williams added on to the Surge advantage by driving Boyd home with his first triple of the year. Another RBI double from Cabbage in the top of the seventh provided Wichita with their eighth run in seven innings and guided Wichita to an 8-1 win.
Jordan Balazovic was near perfect tonight. Balazovic threw 5.2 scoreless and hitless innings in his sixth outing of the season and struck out six. Alex Phillips continued the trend with 1.1 scoreless and hitless innings of relief with three strikeouts of his own. The Sod Poodles broke up the no-hitter in the top of the ninth with one out off a solo home run.
