Thirteen Sacred Heart High School students showcased their math skills and won awards at the 44th Math Relays hosted by Fort Hays State University on November 9.
Competing in the 2A-3A division, all thirteen students demonstrated exceptional talent, with each placed in the top ten in at least one event.
The Math Relays featured a range of challenging competitions, including number sense, calculator-based calculations, and trigonometry, providing a platform for students to display their mathematical prowess.
CORRECTION: Andy Marshall took home top honors with two first-place finishes, two second-place finishes, and two third-place finishes in the six individual events he participated.
Other top 3 finishes went to:
A team comprised of Elias Gordon, Isaac Berndt and Ethan Schrant received first place among sophomores in the using number sense category.
Luke Newell recieved second place in junior Algebra.
Jason Marrs received second place in senior Word Problems.
A team comprised of Michael Matteucci, Jett Samuelson, and Hunter Newell took second place in senior word problems.
Ethan Newell received fourth place among freshmen in using number sense.
Others scoring points for the team:
A team made up of Makenna Soukup, Abram Anderson, and Luke Newell took fourth among juniors in the using number sense category.
Abram Anderson placed fourth among juniors in word problems.
Hunter Newell placed fifth among seniors in Algebra.
Ethan Newell placed fifth in Freshman Geometry.
A team made up of Michael Matteucci, Jett Samuelson, and Abram Anderson took sixth in Senior Algebra.
Jason Marrs placed sixth place in using number sense.
Ethan Newell placed sixth in Freshmen word problems.
The Sacred Hearth Mathletes took fourth place overall with 88 points. Maize South Maize South (4A-6A) recieved first place with 145, Hays High (4A-6A) recieved second with 103.5 points and St. John's Catholic (1A) received third place with 91 points.
