Kansas Division Emergency Management (KDEM) are providing courses to teach pet owners, animal caregivers and emergency responders about proper Animal First Aid and CPR.
This interactive course will provide people with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize and respond to common animal medical emergencies.
Participants will learn how to assess vital signs such as heart rate and respiratory rate, and how to identify early warning signs of distress. The class covers life-threatening conditions including heat stroke, hypothermia, and frostbite, with step-by-step guidance on prevention, recognition, and immediate care.
Students will also be introduced to safe handling practices, including how to properly restrain and lift animals to minimize stress and prevent injury during examinations and transport.
Finally, the course includes essential instruction and demonstration on performing CPR on animals.
By the end of this class, participants will be better prepared to provide immediate first aid that can stabilize an animal’s condition until professional veterinary care is available.
