The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Fire Weather Watch for the Salina area, effective from Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening. This warning covers several counties, including Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, and Chase, indicating extreme grassland fire danger.

According to the forecast, residents can expect strong winds from the south at speeds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. Compounding the risk, relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 25%.

The National Weather Service warns that if fires develop during this time, they are likely to spread rapidly and could become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged as conditions are expected to be critical.

A Fire Weather Watch is an alert that critical fire weather conditions are anticipated. Officials and fire crews in the field are advised to stay vigilant and prepare for potential emergencies. The public is encouraged to listen for updates and potential red flag warnings throughout the day.
