Kansas Wesleyan softball dropped both ends of its season-opening doubleheader with Mid-America Christian on Friday at MACU's Allen Field in Oklahoma City. The Evangels won the opener 4-1 and the second game 7-4.
In the opener, the Coyotes had chances in the first two innings, but could not capitalize on Brianna McGinnis (SR/Tucson, Ariz.)' first inning double on Elizabeth Willison (SO/Moore, Okla.)'s to lead off the second inning.
MACU used a double and a single to plate its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Evangels got three runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead.
Wesleyan tried to rally in the top of the seventh as Carmen Angulo (SR/Long Beach, Calif.) singled and Mia Hernandez (FR/Hanford, Calif.) doubled to drive in Angulo. Lauren Blue (SR/Arlington, Texas) walked but the Coyotes could not get another run in.
Five different Coyotes had hits. Angulo struck out seven in six innings, allowing four runs on six hits, but suffered the loss.
In the second game, Mid-America took advantage of some miscues by the Coyotes in the bottom of the first inning to score six runs.
Wesleyan answered right back in the top of the second as Miranda Guerrero (JR/Oxnard, Calif.) had a 2-run double. The Coyotes got two more in the top of the fourth in Vivian Millan (SO/Grand Prairie, Texas)'s 2-run double.
MACU added a run in the fifth to hold on for the win.
Millan, Paola Cordova (JR/El Paso, Texas) and Guerrero had two hits each for the Coyotes. Natalie Zamora (FR/Houston, Texas) took the loss, allowing six runs, only two of them earned, on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. Jewell Henry (SO/Kingston, Okla.) went the rest of the way, allowing a run on five hits.
Wesleyan is off until Feb. 19 for the home opener when KWU hosts Hastings at 1 p.m. on the turf at Salina South High School.
