NEW ORLEANS, La. - Cloud County Community College sophomore men's track and field athlete Courtney Lawrence has been named United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Track Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Highland Challenge on Saturday.
After finishing NJCAA National Runner-Up in the shot put last season by less than 10 inches, Lawrence had a marvelous series this past weekend at the Highland Challenge by winning the shot put. He opened the meet with a personal record of 18.28m (59-11¾) before unleashing a school-record throw of 18.48m (60-7¾) on his fifth attempt. In between the attempts, Lawrence recorded a heave of 18.20m (59-8½) for yet another big mark in his first action of the season.
This is the first time since 2018 that a male athlete from Cloud County has been named National Athlete of the Week during the indoor season (Mobile Thosito on Feb. 6) and the first time that Lawrence has been named USTFCCCA NJCAA Track Athlete of the Week.
