Virgil Dechant, 81, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 3:02 p.m., Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at Truman VA Hospital, Columbia, Missouri.
Virgil was born in Antonino, Kansas on January 2, 1941, a son of Margaret Barbara (Rohr) and Frank Dechant.
Virgil attended WaKeeney grade schools and graduated from WaKeeney High School, WaKeeney, Kansas in 1959.
He was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in McPherson.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was owner and operator his own trucking company.
Virgil enjoyed traveling, mechanic work, woodworking and loved spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Virgil Dechant was united in marriage to Mary Catherine "Kay" LaFond on August 13, 1965, at Hays, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Russell, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of three children, two daughters and one son, Laura, Kevin P. and Lisa M. In 1967, the family moved to Wichita, Kansas until 1970 when they moved to McPherson.
He is survived by his children, Kevin Dechant and his wife Jennifer, of Hamburg, Iowa and Lisa Maguire and her husband Kaleb, of Yukon, Oklahoma; his sister Maryetta Dechant, of Casper, Wyoming. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Brittany Swart, Brandon Swart, Braden Maguire, Bodie Dechant, and Bryn Dechant
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Laura Swart; and his wife Kay Dechant
Rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. Ben Shockey officiating.
Burial will be at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.
Military honors will be provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 and the American Legion Post 24 of McPherson.
