THE SERIES
The Coyotes have won three in a row after losing the previous four and seven of eight. Last season they won 78-71 in Salina and 81-58 at Sterling. The Warriors have a 27-18 lead in the series since 2005.
KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
- The Coyotes have won their last three games and five of the last six. They defeated McPherson 66-52 in McPherson on Nov. 19 then toppled Oklahoma Wesleyan 62-58 on Nov. 22 in Bartlesville, Okla., before the holiday break.
- Point guard Odessa Ozuna and forward Izzy McCool are the top scorers - Ozuna averages 13.4 points and McCool 13.1 while shooting 52.2 percent from the field. Ozuna also averages 6.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds while McCool grabs 4.9 rebounds. Center Paige Chauncey, the lone returning starter, missed the first four games but has averaged 11.3 points and 5.3 rebounds since returning three games ago.
- KWU is averaging 72 points and allowing 64.3. The Coyotes are shooting 44 percent as a team that includes 35 percent from 3-point range and are shooting 69 percent from the free throw line. They're outrebounding their opponents by three per game but are committing 18 turnovers while forcing 15.
STERLING AT A GLANCE
- The Warriors started the season 1-2 but have won their last five. They defeated Bethany 68-58 and Avila 75-67 in their final two conference games before the break then downed Doane 68-56 in a non-conference game last Saturday.
- Sterling averages 77 points and is led in scoring by senior guard Kali Briar (19.5 points), junior guard Karlee Jacobs (18.1) and senior forward McKenna Vogl (16.4). Vogl also averages a team-lead 7.6 rebounds. The Warriors are averaging 19 turnovers but are forcing 21 per game.
- Sterling is led by first-year coach Evan Belk who was head coach at Cottey College last season. He replaced longtime coach K.C. Bassett who guided the Warriors for 11 seasons before leaving to become an assistant coach at Nebraska-Kearney.
