NWS cancels most winter storm warnings for area; advisories replace them

Although a couple remain, most of the winter storm warnings for the area have been canceled and replaced with winter weather advisories.

Two of the northern-most counties in our area, however, remain in winter storm warnings.

Winter storm warnings

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings, Neb., a winter storm warning remains in effect until 3 a.m. Tuesday for Jewell County.

Additional snowfall accumulations anywhere from 1 to 4 inches will be possible. North to northeast winds with speeds 15 to 20 mph and gusts near 25 mph will continue to result in patchy blowing and drifting snow.

Snow will continue to gradually decrease in intensity and coverage through tonight. Winds will also gradually diminish overnight. Please note that snow may not end completely overnight, as light snow or flurries could linger right on into the day Tuesday.

Travel will continue to be difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility down to less than one-half mile at times. The hazardous conditions will impact the evening commute. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Additionally, according to NWS in Topeka, a winter storm warning remains in effect until midnight tonight for Republic County.

Snow is tapering off and total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches are expected through this evening. The heaviest snow has moved out of the area, but patchy light snow could linger through the evening hours.

Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the evening commute. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

NWS in Wichita has canceled the winter storm warning for the following counties in our area, and has replaced it with a winter weather advisory in effect until midnight tonight.

Ellsworth County

Lincoln County

Saline County

Freezing drizzle and light snow are forecast. Additional snow accumulations of less than one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze are forecast.

Plan on slippery road conditions this evening. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

NWS in Hastings, Neb., has canceled the winter storm warning for Mitchell County and has, instead, replaced it with a winter weather advisory that is in effect until 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Additional snow accumulations of up to one or two inches will be possible. North to northeast winds with speeds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts near 25 mph may result in some blowing and drifting.

The heavier snowfall rates from earlier in the day have started to diminish across the area. Please note that snow may not end completely overnight, as light snow or flurries could linger right on into the day Tuesday, but significant accumulations are not expected. Winds will also gradually diminish overnight.

Travel will continue to be difficult. Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could reduce visibility down to a mile or less at times. The hazardous travel conditions will impact the evening commute. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

Ottawa County

Patchy light snow and freezing drizzle is forecast. Additional snow accumulations of less than one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze are anticipated.

NWS in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until midnight tonight for Dickinson County.

Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of less than an inch and ice accumulations less than a tenth of an inch are forecast.
