August 19, 1927 - August 17, 2021
Donna Lee Coash received the gift of eternal life on Tuesday, August 17, 2021. She was born on August 19, 1927 in Sherman Township, Clay County Kansas to Courtney and Inez (Johnson) Bertrand. Donna was always very ambitious and started school a year early at Sherman School while living with her aunt, uncle, and teacher. She attended Clay Center schools and graduated from Clifton High School in 1944.
In her earlier years, Donna taught at a one room schoolhouse in the country. Donna also was a teller at the First National Bank in Clifton where she met her late husband, Gene. Gene and Donna were married on August 20, 1947 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Clifton, Kansas. They were blessed with four children; Mike, Steve, Gina, and James. As a family, they enjoyed going to the lake. Her children always convinced her to ski one lap around the lake, once a year.
After taking a break to start a family, Donna worked at the Faith United Presbyterian Church as their secretary. She retired from the Clifton Co-op Elevator as a bookkeeper for 25 years. Donna was a member of the Faith United Presbyterian Church and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She was very active in the Clifton Historical Society and community, helping with many park projects.
Donna met her companion Kerm Aldegren on a work trip to Seattle. They enjoyed golfing, traveling to sporting events, and cooking together.
Donna loved spending time with family and friends. She hosted many elaborate tailgates at Kansas State football games with Kerm. During family gatherings, she often made funnel cakes with her grandkids even though the hot oil made her nervous. She was also famous for her homemade ice cream and fondue parties.
Donna is survived by her children: Steve Coash (Rosalie), Weeping Water, NE; Gina Hamm (Gary), Wichita, KS; James Coash (Teri), Concordia, KS; seven grandkids, Clinton Coash, Matthew Coash, Hannah Coash (Eric Frye), Garrett Coash (Dani), Melissa Coash, Jessica Hamm, Drew Hamm; three great-grandkids, Brodi and Bentli Coash, and Joelle Frye; a sister, Ina Belle Lofy, Clear Lake, IA; a brother, Larry Bertrand (Javine), Minneapolis, KS; and many other extended family members.
