UPDATE: Old 40 reopened after wreck damages gas pipeline

UPDATE 5:30 p.m. Tuesday: According to a post on the Saline County Kansas Facebook page, Old 40 Highway has been reopened and gas and electricity have been restored to the area.

UPDATE noon Tuesday: Law enforcement authorities were on the scene of a single-vehicle accident in Saline County. Old 40 Highway between N. Ohio Street and N. Simpson Road was shut down when the vehicle struck a power pole and gas line, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

A vehicle accident has caused damage to a natural gas pipeline on E. Old Highway 40 east of Salina.

Kansas Gas and the Salina Regional HazMat Team - a part of the Salina Fire Department - are on the scene. The road is closed at the Simpson and Old 40 intersection until further notice.

Please avoid the area.

Residents within a one-mile radius north and east of the area are encouraged to evacuate their homes until further notice.
