Perhaps no one was more in shock at the final results of the Kansas Wesleyan competitive dance inside Mabee Arena on Friday night than KWU coach Claire Schmidt.
The Coyotes, competing in their first competition of the season, brought home the gold, topping the nine-team field.
"I was in complete shock when I saw the score," Schmidt said. "I knew we had a great performance, but wow, this was a complete shocker. Our dancers did great, and fed off the energy of the home crowd. I couldn't be more proud of our effort tonight."
The Coyotes edged out Baker, who was ranked fourth in the NAIA last season in scoring average.
KWU finished with a score of 74.5, while Baker was second with a score of 73.6.
Defending KCAC champion York finished third with a score of 71.9. Bethel was fourth with a 63.4, Southwestern was fifth with a 49.2, Ottawa was sixth with a 46.0, McPherson was seventh with a 40.4, Bethany was eighth with a 39.0, and Peru State was ninth with a score of 36.3.
The Coyotes are back in action next Saturday at Bethel, where they will compete in three different competitions hosted by the Threshers.
