SM Hanson Music is proud of its tradition of recycling guitar and orchestra strings, a service it has performed since 2019.

Most recently, the longtime Salina music store sent 48 pounds of strings to TerraCycle for recycling.

"Metal and nylon strings are separated by type and the metal is smelted down into new metal alloys. The nylon is recycled into industrial plastic applications. It is estimated that more than 1.5 million pounds of instrument string metal could be put into landfills every year," SM Hanson Music noted in a news release.

To help promote its recycling efforts, SM Hanson Music, 335 S. Clark Street, will have a free restringing event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday as a part of the Playback String Recycling Program.

All those participating will receive a set of the newest D’Addario XS treated guitar strings, and SM Hanson staff members will restring the guitars while the customers wait. The promotion is available for six-string electric and acoustic steel stringed instruments and is limited to one guitar per customer.

SM Hanson Music noted that D’Addario XS technology, a thin film coating - 1/10 the thickness of a human hair - that completely protects the wound strings from corrosion without dampening the tone, is what sets its strings apart from the others.
