Following is Weather History for Sunday, August 30, 2020, from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita:
In 2003, tragedy struck the Kansas Turnpike, when the deadly Jacob Creek Flash Flood inundated a one quarter mile section of the interstate, 12 miles southwest of Emporia. Seven vehicles were swept off the turnpike. One was a minivan with a family of six, of which five perished. A sixth fatality resulted when a man's vehicle stalled.
In 1915, the temperature in Salina plunged to 42 degrees to set a record low for the city in the month of August.
