KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals announced tonight that they have acquired outfielder Randal Grichuk (GRICH-ick) from the Arizona Diamondbacks for right-handed pitcher Andrew Hoffmann. To make room on the 26-man roster, outfielder Jac Caglianone was placed on the 10-day Injured List (left hamstring strain).

Grichuk, 33, entered tonight batting .243 (42-for-173) with 15 doubles, 1 triple and 7 home runs (.742 OPS) in 69 games with the Diamondbacks this season, after re-signing with them on a one-year deal in February. He’s made 40 starts this season, including 23 as the designated hitter, 16 in right field and 1 in left field.

Five of his 7 HR this season have come against left-handed pitchers, and he owns a career .827 OPS against southpaws. Since 2022, his .553 slugging percentage vs. left handers ranks 5th in the Majors (min. 500 PA) behind only Aaron Judge (.703), Paul Goldschmidt (.583), Yordan Alvarez (.577) and Mookie Betts (.561).

In 15 games this month entering tonight, Grichuk hit .256 (11-for-43) and 9 of his 11 hits have gone for extra bases, including 5 doubles and 4 home runs, for a .924 OPS.

Grichuk was selected by the Angels in the 1st round (24th overall) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft and made his Major League debut in 2014 with St. Louis, where he played the first four seasons of his career through 2017. He’s also played for Toronto (2018-21), Colorado (2022-23), the Angels (2023) and Arizona (2024-25).

A 12-year Major League veteran, Grichuk has 504 career extra-base hits (28th among active players), including 210 home runs (31st among actives).
