Of the 48 football teams in Class 3A, just eight undefeated remain, including Southeast of Saline, who handled Colby 45-0 last week.
“That was a physical game but I felt like we stepped up as the game progressed and matched that physicality all throughout,” SES head coach Mitch Gebhardt said.
The Trojans will now turn their attention to a new foe in the Goodland Cowboys, a team they have not faced in the last decade thanks to a Covid-cancellation last season.
Goodland has been sputtering in 2021 to say the least, and will enter this game at 0-5, having been outscored 146-53.
Despite their opponent’s struggles, Southeast’s preparation remains widely unchanged ahead of Friday’s game, as the Trojans look to continue what has been a historic run.
“We really do preach going 1-0 every week so we approach every week the same and I hope on Friday that shows,” Gebhardt said. “We want to continue to get better throughout the season and we know we’re going to get Goodland’s best shot on Friday.”
The Cowboys try to vary their looks offensively to confuse opponents, but have turned the ball over at nausea this season, with seven touchdowns, seven interceptions, and two lost fumbles as an offensive unit.
The star of that offense has been sophomore quarterback Cole Linton, who leads the team in passing and rushing yards, accounting for just under 70% of Goodland’s total offense this season.
While the Cowboy's defense has struggled throughout the season, they did manage to hold 3-2 Scott City to 21 points but will have a much tougher time slowing down a Trojan offense that averages 55 points per game.
SES is now 27-3 in their last 30 regular-season games dating back to 2018, with their most recent regular-season loss coming in 2019.
Kickoff between the Trojans and Cowboys is set for 7 pm at Goodland High School and as always the game can be heard on KINA (910 AM or 107.5 FM) or streamed on the Salina Post.
