NEWTON – Kansas Wesleyan Men's Cross Country finished seventh at the Tabor Cottonwood Challenge on Saturday at Harvey County East Lake.

The Coyotes ran without three of the usual top competitors in the race, as Jacob Lovell (SR/Junction City, Kan.), Daniel York (FR/Linn, Kan.) and Steven Merrill (FR/Arvada, Colo.) did not race in Saturday's race.

Austin Hess (FR/Garden City, Kan.) led the Coyotes with a 28th place finish, covering the 8K course in 30:07.38. Shane Calvin (FR/Lakin, Kan.) was 33rd in 31:11.78, Trey Stramel (FR/Colby, Kan.) was 42nd in 32:05.27, Michael Vongphakdy (FR/Salina, Kan.) was 43rd in 32:07.59, Timothy Kilburn was 52nd with a time of 33:40.22, and Randall Thornton (FR/Salina, Kan.) was 62nd with a time of 37:33.35.

NCAA Division II member Newman was the meet champion with 34 points, NJCAA member Cloud County CC was second with 62 points. Friends was the top NAIA finisher at the meet in third with 76 points.

Wesleyan will remain idle in competition until the NAIA MidStates Classic on Oct. 24 in Winfield, due to the cancellation of the Fort Hays State Tiger Open, which had been scheduled for Oct. 10. The KWU coaching staff is still looking for a meet to fill the void left by the cancellation.
