Kansas Wesleyan Baseball picked up two wins on Friday as the Coyotes beat Saint Ambrose 8-4 and Hastings 6-3 at Dean Evans Stadium.
Against Saint Ambrose, the Coyotes took an early lead 3-0 in the first inning. Jacob Williamson, who had a hot bat all day, led off with a double, followed by a bunt single by Tyler Favretto. A walk to Carter Allen set up Garrett Garfield for a 2-run single and two batters later Fernando Ruvalcaba singled to score Allen.
Wesleyan added solo tallies in the next three innings to extend the lead to 6-0.
In the second, Williams again doubled to lead off the inning, and Allen walked. Allen then took off for second as the Coyotes tried a double steal, and Williamson went to third on the play and then scored, before Allen got stuck in a run down and was ultimately awarded second base after running into a Saint Ambrose defender trying to go to second base.
Ruvalcaba led off the third with a walk and later scored on Williamson's single to center field.
Favretto led off the fourth inning with a double and then courtesy runner Michael Rago scored on a ground out by Allen.
The Bees got three on the board in the fifth inning and added another in the sixth to trim Wesleyan's lead to two at 6-4.
In the eighth, the Coyotes got two more runs. Williamson led off with a double for a third time and Favretto walked ahead of Allen's sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. Two batters later, the Coyotes cashed in on some fancy base running. With Williamson on third and pinch runner Coulson Riggs on second, Williamson darted for home catching SAU off guard and forcing the pitcher to doubleclutch on his throw home, which is a balk, allowing the run to score and Riggs to move to third.
Feeling the pressure of a runner on third, SAU's pitcher flinched before starting his motion for another balk and a second run in the inning for the Coyotes.
Ritter Steinmann closed out the game in the ninth.
Williamson had four hits in the game for the Coyotes, three of them doubles that all led off innings. Favretto and Ruvalcaba had two hits each. Nathan Righi went five innings allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts for the win.
The Coyotes kept the momentum going in the second game against Hastings.
Wesleyan got one on the board in the first inning as Williamson led things off with another double and then scored on a ground out by Favretto.
The score remained the same until the fourth with Hastings tied things up, taking advantage of an error by the Coyotes.
The Coyotes answered right back in the bottom of the inning as Ruvalcaba led off with a walk and later in the inning, pinch runner Coulson Riggs scored on Jackson Harriger's infield single to make it 2-1.
Wesleyan added four more in the sixth. Pinch hitter Jesse Conrad led off the inning with a single for the Coyotes and later in the inning pitch hitter Drew Wardell doubled to score pinch runner Blake Dale. Williamson then walked before Favretto stepped up and crushed a ball out to right center for a 3-run homer to make it 6-1.
Hastings tried to make things interesting in the seventh plating two runs, but Coyote pitcher Blake Maddock would induce a game-ending ground out to secure the win.
Five different players had hits for the Coyotes and Favretto drove in four runs. Maddock would go the distance for the Coyotes on the hill, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with nine strikeouts and no walks for the win.
