A recently purchased Chevrolet Camaro was wrecked after a short, high-speed chase through central Salina Thursday evening.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a deputy was eastbound and stopped at the light at the intersection of S. Santa Fe Avenue/Crawford Street when he heard a vehicle accelerating and tires squealing, and a westbound silver 2000 Chevrolet Camaro shot by him.

The deputy turned around to pursue the Camaro, which turned south on Highland Avenue and continued south at a high rate of speed, Soldan said.

The driver of the Camaro ran a stop sign and failed to negotiate a turn at the intersection of Highland Avenue/W. Republic Avenue and the car crashed through two fences on the southeast corner before coming to a stop when it hit a tree.

●Failure to yield at a stop sign

The Camaro sustained damage to the front end and all down the driver's side, Soldan said.

Preliminary damage estimates to the property include $20,000 to the fences, $500 to the yard, $500 to landscaping, and $500 to a shrub, Soldan said.

Soldan said Bowden had recently purchased the Camaro and had not yet registered it.
