Heading into tonight's game against Southeast of Saline, Sacred Heart coach Keenan Thompson’s key to the game was simple.
“We win if we contain Karsyn Schlesener, if we don’t, we lose.”
Those words would ring true tonight as Schlesener racked up a career high 29 points in a dominant 52-36 SES win.
“Once Karsyn got started early on it really felt like she settled in,” Lady Trojan head coach Shauna Smith said.
Schlesener was joined in double digit scoring by Maddie Harris, who finished her night with 11. Harris’ performance was just one more in a line of good nights for the Lady Trojan underclassmen.
“The younger kids are playing a little more right now because they can score,” she said. “Offensively we’ve struggled the last few years so if you can score you’re probably going to find the floor a little more.”
Ellie Woodall and Teghan Slagle led the way for Sacred Heart with 12 and 11 respectively, but it wasn’t enough to overcome 17 turnovers, dropping Sacred Heart to 2-1.
Once again the Lady Trojans looked great in transition, and much improved on the boards, allowing them to work quickly after cleaning the glass.
“We’ve worked on transition offense in practice a lot and that’s a way we’re going to have to get some easy buckets this year,” Smith said. “I thought we did a good job running the floor tonight but we can still do better.”
With Tuesday’s game against Abilene cancelled, the Lady Trojans won’t be back in action again until they face Hillsboro on Thursday.
With this win, SES advances to 1-2 on the young season.
