What do you do after you have the longest regular-season winning streak in the state of Kansas snapped in a disappointing loss?

If you’re Southeast of Saline, you start another streak, which is exactly what the Trojans did on Friday night, coming back to beat 3A Wichita Collegiate 22-14 on the road.

It wasn’t always pretty, but when it mattered most, the Trojans got the job done, with late-game heroics seeing Southeast through the night and on to a 4-1 start.

Wichita Collegiate got on the board first when Landon Langston found Jai Johnson on a 58-yard strike that put the Spartans up 7-0.

That touchdown would be the only score of the first half, and Collegiate went into the locker room pitching their first shutout of the season.

Early in the third, the Spartans doubled their lead when Langston found Ethan Eyster through the air from 39 yards out.

SES wasted no time responding with a strong drive of their own, getting on the board on a one-yard Tiernan Ptacek run, and cutting the lead to six with a two-point conversion.

That 14-8 score would hold until late in the fourth, when Leighton Nutsch took a 45-yard jet sweep deep into Spartan territory, setting Southeast up with a first-and-goal from the five.

Just one play later, LaVone Hopkins tied the game on a dive up the gut, and the two-point conversion secured the first SES lead of the night 16-14.

A 45-yard Spartan field goal attempt doinked off the right upright, and a last-ditch effort to score on a lateral play resulted in a Southeast scoop-and-score as the Trojans drove the final nail into the Collegiate coffin.

With this win, Southeast improves to 4-1 on the year while the Spartans drop to 1-4.

SES will return home next week to host 5-0 Council Grove while Collegiate stays in Wichita to battle 4-1 Cheney.
