John William Mattingly

John William Mattingly, of Mansfield, Texas, formerly of, Wakefield, Kansas, passed away on September 29, 2022 at the age of 74.

Memorial service to be held at a later time.

He was born on April 4, 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles Joseph Mattingly and Letha Alene Morrison. He married Brenda (Jett) Mattingly on September 20, 1969 in East St. Louis, Illinois and they were married for 53 wonderful years.

John proudly served his country for 22 years in the United States Army. Throughout his career in the military, he was an Aircraft Armament Maintenance Tech, Aviation Warrant Office Advanced, and an Aircraft Maintenance Officer Representative Tech. He received his Master Aircraft Badge, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Metal, 7 Air Medals, 5 Good Conduct Medals, Overseas Service Ribbons, Vietnam Campaign Medal, A Silver Star, Two Bronze Stars, and many more.

He received his associates degree in science and then went on to work for 18 years in Quality Control for the Federal Government. John also had a passion for being involved with the VFW, where he became a lifetime member once he retired from the military. He was also a member of the DAV and American Legion.

In his free time, he loved tinkering in his workshop, fishing and socializing.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Joseph Mattingly and Letha Alene Mattingly; brothers, Lenny, Adrian and Danny Mattingly; sister, Rita Steinkamp; grandson, Jeremiah Mendiola.

He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda M. Mattingly (Jett); daughter, Paula D. Pope and Jerry of Mansfield, Texas; sons, Kenneth J. Mattingly and Penny of Corpus Christi, Texas, John W. Mattingly Jr. and Melissa Kugler of Salina, Kansas, Allen and Teri Adkins of Salina, Kansas; grandchildren, Eric and Maddie Pope, Devon and Jessica Pope, Amanda and Jared Jarvis, Claire Base, Samantha Mattingly, Austin and Avery Adkins, Kaleb, and Kami Kugler, Noah Kukuk, Tabitha and Allen Ore, Elijah and Yvette Mendiola, Sarah and Rudy Serrano, Cori and Ismael Ventura; great-grandchildren, Mahalia, Tobias and Tucker Pope, Ayden and Carter Pope, December, Kain and Skarlett Jarvis; numerous other extended family members and friends.
