The 2021 CIF regular season is in the books and the Salina Liberty will enter the playoffs as the number one overall seed, hosting the Dodge City Law on July 10th.
In the final week of the regular season, Jason Schelly was named CIF offensive player of the week after his phenomenal four-touchdown performance against the Wichita Force.
Schelly was by no means the only member of the Liberty to earn that title however, as each week that the Salina Liberty took the field, at least one member of the team was named offensive, defensive, or special teams POTW.
This dominance began early, as Salina swept the awards in the opening week of CIF play with quarterback Tyrie Adams, defensive back Dontra Matthews and returner Dominique Carson being named offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week respectively.
Adams would repeat his award-winning performance in week four collecting offensive player of the week honors for a second time in 2021.
An injury would take Adams off the field, but Mitch Kidd wasted no time keeping the offense rolling as the backup was named offensive POTW in week 10.
Adams was not the only player to earn repeat honors as Dominique Carson earned a second special teams POTW commendation in week ten.
Kicker Jimmy Allen was a mainstay for that very same honor as the only player on the team or in the league to be named any POTW three different times.
The Liberty quarterbacks couldn’t have put up the monstrous numbers that they did throughout the season without a top-notch receiving corps, and between Juahem Byrd, Ed Smith and Jason Schelly, Salina swept offensive player of the week commendations in seven of the ten weeks that they were eligible to win it in.
Detray Matthews rounded out the award parade with a defensive POTW honor in week five. All-in-all nine members of the Salina Liberty made the list a combined 14 times as the team rolled to a 10-1 record on the year.
