Gary Robert Armour, Shawnee

Gary Robert Armour, 73, of Shawnee, KS, passed away Friday, June 17, 2022 at his home after a 17-month courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Gary was born September 7, 1948 in Dunkirk, NY to the late Robert E. and Elinor S. (Hubbard) Armour.
He married his high school sweetheart, Janice Baker on July 15, 1967 at Salina First Presbyterian Church.
Gary earned a master’s degree from Kansas State University and was a career mathematics teacher. He began his teaching career at Clay Center, KS for nine years. Gary then taught 24 years at Salina Central, seven years at McPherson, KS and one year at Erie, CO. He also taught part-time at K-State-Salina. Gary also coached football, basketball, and wrestling during his career. In 1996 he was the USD 305 Secondary Teacher of the Year and a candidate for Kansas Teacher of the Year. Gary believed that teaching was a calling and he loved teaching and interacting with his students. He was a member of Salina First Presbyterian Church, KNEA, and Phi Kappa Phi.
He is survived by his wife Janice Armour of Shawnee, KS; daughters Dr. Chris Pickett, D.V.M. of Shawnee, KS, and Penny Armour (John Walker) of Draper, UT; sons Michael Armour (Cindy) of Benicia, CA and Tim Armour (Lesley Reed) of Baton Rouge, LA; sister Sue Hine (Rod) of Concordia, KS; as well as nine grandchildren, Emily Armour, Ellen Armour, Alicia Pickett, Josh Pickett, Noah Pickett, Natalie Bowman, Andrew Bowman, Jack Bowman, and Quinnlan Armour. Gary is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Deanna Crick.
Cremation has been chosen and memorial services will be announced at a later date.
