ABILENE - A full lineup of spring events is set to bring visitors to Abilene throughout April, with activities ranging from quilt shows and markets to a Boston Marathon qualifying race and a community-wide heritage celebration.
The monthlong schedule is expected to draw visitors from across Kansas and beyond, offering something new each week for residents and travelers alike.
“From nationally recognized races to hands-on experiences and heritage events, April showcases what makes Abilene a destination,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Whether you’re planning a day trip or a weekend getaway, there is always something happening.”
Events like these are one of the reasons Abilene is frequently named among the best small towns to visit in the United States, attracting travelers looking for authentic experiences and welcoming communities.
Ida Stover Eisenhower Memorial Quilt Show
The month begins with the “Ida Stover Eisenhower Memorial Quilt Show,” held April 4–12 at the Dickinson County Heritage Center.
Guests can view quilts dating from the late 1800s to today and vote for their favorites.
Abilene HandCrafters Spring Market
Also on Saturday, April 4, shoppers can explore the “Abilene HandCrafters Spring Market,” featuring more than 60 handcrafted vendors across two locations, Sterl Hall and the National Guard Armory.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes food options, gift bags for early attendees, and a special appearance by the Easter Bunny.
Sunflower Journey Quilt Show
Quilt enthusiasts will return the following weekend for the “Sunflower Journey Quilt Show,” April 11–12. Hosted by the End of the Trail Quilters Guild, the show draws hundreds of attendees and features a merchant mall, silent auction, door prizes, and lunch at the Sunflower Café.
Eisenhower Marathon and Half Marathon
Runners from across the region will gather on Saturday, April 18, for the “Eisenhower Marathon and Half Marathon,” a Boston Marathon qualifying race. Known for its flat and fast course, the event follows historic Chisholm Trail routes and includes a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K.
Plains, Trains and Cowboys
Abilene’s heritage takes center stage April 24–25 during “Plains, Trains and Cowboys,” part of the community’s America 250 celebration. Hosted at the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad, Dickinson County Heritage Center, and Old Abilene Town, the event features western experiences and rail-themed activities.
Painting on the Patio
Also on Saturday, April 25, guests can enjoy “Painting on the Patio” at the Historic Seelye Mansion.
This plein air painting experience begins at 3:30 p.m., with instruction starting at 4:00 p.m.
Reservations are required by April 18.

Dickinson County Celebrates Freedom of Religion
The month concludes on Sunday, April 26, with “Dickinson County Celebrates Freedom of Religion,” hosted by the Dickinson County Republican Women.
The event includes church open houses from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. potluck dinner and presentation at St. Andrews.
