
MCPHERSON -- McPherson Fire Chief T.J Wyssmann recently issued an update concerning the partial collapse of a building in the downtown area. Following is his statement that was posted on the McPherson Fire Department Facebook page late this afternoon.
At approximately 9:37 this morning The City of McPherson Fire Department was dispatched to 122 West Marlin for a Building collapse. Upon arrival we discovered that the incident was located on the west wall above Sounds Great at 123 N. Main. Crews quickly deployed to verify no one was trapped inside the building and that the building was not on fire. Crews discovered one individual was inside the structure at the time of the collapse, this individual was able to egress from the building without injury and was checked out by McPherson EMS.
We have requested assistance from Patrick Steward who is the Structural Engineer with the State of Kansas Task Force Five Division and Jeffery Crist with Earles Engineering & Inspection who is local to McPherson.
At this time, we have sent a team into the building to investigate and currently crews are strategizing with engineers and fire personnel on plans to stabilize the building.
Currently assisting with this incident is McPherson County Sheriff’s Department, City of McPherson Police Department, City of McPherson Public Works, Kansas Gas Service, Board of Public Utilities, Kansas Highway Patrol, City of McPherson Street Department and McPherson Emergency Medical Services.

This morning we took a report of a loud boom and a building collapsing in the 100 Block of North Main Street and Marlin Street. First responders arrived on scene to observe the west wall of a residence above Sounds Great, 123 N Main Street had crumbled. There were no injuries to any citizens. For the time being the 100 block of North Main Street and 100 West Marlin Street are closed. Pedestrians are asks to stay away from the area until a structural engineer and shoring is in place. We will keep you updated as we get more information.
