KWU leads the all-time series 60-38-4. This will be the 103rd all-time meeting, the second-longest single opponent series in KWU program history (Bethany - 115).
KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
- The Coyotes lost to Friends 49-48 in a wild Senior Day shootout last Saturday at JRI Stadium. They had a chance to win the game, but a two-point conversion pass was tipped away in the end zone with 21 seconds left. KWU scored after a 72-yard, 11-play drive that took 2:34, the touchdown coming on Caleb Deal's 23-yard pass to Kyler Brown.
- Deal was named the KCAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after throwing for 489 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. He completed 34 of 55 passes. The 489 yards were the second most in school history and just eight yards shy of tying the school record set by Doug Webster in 2010.
- Deal, a senior transfer from Northwest Oklahoma State, has completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,418 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. He's also KWU's top rusher with 494 yards and four touchdowns.
- Will Wilcox caught 13 passes for 154 yards, Kevo Taylor six for 96 yards and three touchdowns and Brown eight for 73 yards and a touchdown. KWU had 558 total yards and 31 first downs while Friends had 597 total yards that included 554 rushing and 32 first downs.
- Henry Austad's 11-yard touchdown pass to D'Heaven Domena with 57 seconds left propelled the Coyotes past McPherson last season. The Bulldogs led 20-13 at halftime but KWU shut them out the second half. Domena led the offense with 147 yards rushing on 32 carries.
McPHERSON AT A GLANCE
- The Bulldogs lost to Southwestern 27-24 last Saturday in McPherson. They trailed 21-3 at halftime and their second half comeback fell short. McPherson won its first six games but has dropped two of its last three, falling to Friends 48-24 on Oct. 17 in McPherson.
- The Bulldogs won two close road games earlier in the season, 21-13 at Tabor and 14-10 at Ottawa.
- Senior quarterback Ryan Markarian has been superb season completing 67.6 percent of his passes for 2,248 yards and 19 touchdowns with five interceptions. Senior running back Jalil Brown has been outstanding as well rushing for 1,187 yards and 19 touchdowns. Senior Jamai Rutherford is the leading receiver with 29 catches for 501 yards and seven touchdowns.
- The Bulldogs average 533 yards per game - 237.4 rushing and 295.6 passing. Opponents average 14 points and 236 yards - 120 passing and 116 rushing.
- Coach Jeremiah Fiscus is in his eighth season. He played two seasons at McPherson after transferring from Dodge City Community College. He previously coached at Henderson State, TCU and Northwestern State
HEAD COACH MATT MIDDLETON
"I think the biggest thing (against Friends is we had no turnovers; we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot. Caleb had a great day; he was explosive and made some plays with his legs. It was fun to watch. We had a lot of receivers making plays in open field and breaking tackles and had a lot of yards after the catch. And the offensive line protected the quarterback.
"(McPherson) has an unbelievable roster. Markarian is a polished passer that stands in there, and he's going to take his licks and complete balls. We've got to harass him enough to make him feel uncomfortable. Brown is going to get loose; he's going to make plays; he's a great back.
"Defensively they have a bunch of animals. Their front four is really good, and they pressure the quarterback, get after you. I think they're the most complete defensive unit in our conference that we've seen. We're going to have to play our best game of the year."
