Wednesday will be warm but rather windy. 

Strong southerly wind gusts into the 40 to 50 mph range are expected. High-profile vehicles will have difficulty on highways. 

Very high to potentially extreme fire danger is also possible during the afternoon. Outdoor burning is discouraged for Wednesday.

Monday kicks off Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Kansas.

The week is scheduled to include a statewide tornado drill at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

In 2022, 56 tornadoes were recorded in Kansas, according to information from the National Weather Service. That number was five below the 1950-2022 average of 61, 29 below the 30-year average of 85, and 11 below the 10-year average of 67, yet higher than 2021 and 2020 combined.

According to the weather service, the longest tracking tornado was an EF1 tornado that was on the ground for 21.76 miles in Dickinson and Morris counties on April 29. The strongest tornado, an EF3, also was recorded on April 29 in Sedgwick and Butler counties. 

In fact, 14 tornadoes were recorded on April 29, the most prolific tornado-producing day in 2022 for Kansas. June saw the most tornadoes - 22 - for one month in 2022, and Kansas had 17 days in 2020 with at least one tornado. 

Thomas County in northwest Kansas holds the record for most 2022 tornadoes in one county: eight.

The length of the 2022 tornado season in Kansas was 154 days, from March 29 to Aug. 29.

While the bulk of spring severe and tornadic weather is still ahead of us this year, Kansas has already seen tornadoes in 2023.

Kansas Severe Weather Preparedness Week begins Monday

Unseasonably warm temperatures, low daytime humidity and strong and gusty south winds will result in very high fire danger Sunday afternoon and evening.

Above-average temperatures will prevail this weekend, especially Sunday. Strong and gusty south winds Sunday will lead to elevated fire danger areawide.

Enjoy the warmer weather while you can. Much colder air is expected to encompass mid-America from mid-next week through at least next weekend. Periodic wintry precipitation may accompany the colder air, although there remains quite a bit of uncertainty, so stay tuned.

A powerful storm system will spread a large area of rain across the region for Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. 

Late Thursday night, some snow will start to mix in with the rain and may cause some travel impacts. In addition, strong north winds are also expected that may gust to between 45 and 50 mph.

West winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected.

The strong winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

Arctic air will continue to overspread central and eastern Kansas with the coldest temperatures and wind chills across central Kansas late tonight.

High temperatures will range from 10 to 18 degrees below normal for late February across central and eastern Kansas Thursday and Friday.

It's going to be a multi-dog night tonight; cold continues to Friday

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a dust advisory until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday that includes southern Ellsworth County.

At 5:57 p.m. CST, a dust channel was over Hanston, moving northeast at 45 mph. Less than two miles of visibility with strong winds in excess of 50 mph with a few wind gusts up to 60 mph are forecast.

By SALINA POSTThe National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a dust advisory until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday that includes southern Ellsworth County.At 5:57 p.m. CST, a dust channel was over Hanston, moving northeast at 45 mph. Less than two miles of visibility with strong winds in excess of 50 mph with a few wind gusts up to 60 mph are forecast.Highways 281, 56, K-4, K-96, and K-156 are all expected to be affected over the next hour and a half. Dust advisory includes southern Ellsworth County

The National Weather Service is looking for people willing to be Cooperative Weather Observers at several locations, including Barnard and Peabody.

COOP observers, as they are commonly known, are comprised of more than 11,000 volunteers from across the United States "record the daily weather-related information that forms the backbone of our nation's climatological data collection network. Weather observers across the country record daily temperatures and precipitation data. Some also record or report additional information such as soil temperature, evaporation and wind movement, agricultural data, water equivalent of snow on the ground, river stages, lake levels, atmospheric phenomena and road hazards," according to information from the National Weather Service in Wichita.

Some stations have been collecting weather data from the same location for more than 100 years.

In the warning area for the National Weather Service Office in Wichita, which includes the Salina vicinity, there are approximately 150 cooperative stations.

Coop observers are made up of people from nearly every walk of life, the weather service noted. 

Currently, the Wichita office is looking for COOP observers at the following locations.

Equipment used by the COOP observers is provided and maintained by the National Weather Service. Data forms are sent monthly to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, N.C., where the data is digitized, quality controlled, and archived, according to the weather service.

"This data is invaluable in learning more about floods, droughts and heat and cold waves, which inevitably affect everyone. They are used in agricultural planning and assessments, engineering, environmental-impact assessments, utilities planning and litigation. The data plays a critical role in efforts to recognize and evaluate the extent of human impacts on climate from local and global scales," the weather service noted.

Many COOP observers also report daily precipitation measurements and temperatures through a weather program on a home computer or programmable phone.

"Reports from Cooperative Observers are extremely important to River Forecast Centers in support of the National Weather Service Hydrology Program. The reports are important to the local National Weather Service Forecast Office for the issuance of forecasts, watches, warnings, and advisories. The Cooperative Observers serve a vital role in the National Weather Service's mission to protect life and property," the weather service noted.

NWS: Temperatures warming through Wednesday

Stout and gusty south winds will prevail today across the region, supporting elevated grassland fire danger.

Because of the wind, the National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

South winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Small tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

As of 6:23 a.m., additional snow accumulations of less than one inch and winds gusting as high as 40 mph were expected.

As of 2:15 a.m., additional snow accumulations up to 1 inch were possible, with winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Topeka has moved the following counties into a winter weather advisory until noon Thursday.

As of 1:51 a.m., additional snow accumulations of 1 to 5 inches and winds gusting as high as 35 mph were expected.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories have been issued for counties in our area.

A winter storm warning is in effect until noon Thursday for the following counties in our area.

Heavy snow and strong winds are expected, with total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will cause near-blizzard conditions and drifting snow.

Travel is expected to become very difficult. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Snow drifts may make roads impassable. These hazardous conditions are expected to impact the Thursday morning commute as well.

Any travel tonight and Thursday morning is strongly discouraged. If you leave the safety of being indoors, you are putting your life at risk. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Snowfall is expected to begin across the area during the early afternoon hours, with the highest accumulations expected between 6 p.m. Wednesday evening through 6 a.m. Thursday. Hazardous travel is expected.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
