There is potential for strong to severe storms to develop in the late afternoon into the early evening on Tuesday. 

The main threats will be golf ball-sized hail and wind gusts up to 70 mph. A tornado cannot be ruled out either.

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for some counties in our area

An active weather pattern will persist through much of the week with daily and nightly rain chances. 

At this point, the best chance for widespread rainfall appears to be Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. Severe storms are also a possibility Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night.

NWS: Chance for storms through Wednesday

In 1927, a huge F5 tornado nearly two miles wide raced 95 miles from extreme south-central Kansas to central Kansas. The tornado killed 10, injured 300, and caused approximately $1.3 million in damage. Most of the approximately 100 farmsteads that were hit vanished. The twister began in extreme southeast Comanche County. The vortex quickly intensified, reaching nearly one mile wide. The tornado tore through Barber, Kingman, eastern Reno, and southwest McPherson counties before lifting seven miles south-southwest of McPherson. Four fatalities occurred one mile southeast of Medicine Lodge, one was two miles west of Kingman, three were in East Hutchinson and two were in McPherson County. Damage in East Hutchinson totaled $750,000.

In 1840, the Great Natchez, Mississippi Tornado roared into the record books. The huge vortex formed just southwest of Natchez just before 1 p.m. and moved northeast along the Mississippi River. The tornado killed 317 and injured 109. It was the deadliest tornado in United States history until the Tri-State Tornado of March 18, 1925, that killed 695 and injured 2,027. It is still the second deadliest United States tornado on record. It is also the only massive tornado in United States history to have killed more people than it injured, at almost a 3 to 1 margin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It's going to be another hot day Sunday with a chance for severe storms tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita,&nbsp;temperatures will once again climb into the 90s today, with much of the area, including Salina, reaching the mid-90s.

While the best chances for strong to severe storms will be across northeast Kansas this evening and tonight, there also is a low chance that an isolated strong storm or two could sneak into central or southeast Kansas tonight as well, the weather service noted.

Freeze warnings are in effect for some of our northern counties for early Monday morning.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a freeze warning in effect from 2-8 a.m. Monday for the following counties in our area.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 31 degrees are expected.

Freezing conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 to 32 are expected.

Freeze warnings issued for some area counties early Monday

In 2022, Mother Nature flipped the switch from a quiet and humid evening to a wild night spawning five different tornadoes in less than fifteen minutes between 7:57 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.

These five tornadoes&nbsp;ranged in strength from EF-0 to EF-3. Two EF-0 tornadoes occurred in Hillsboro and Lehigh. Two EF-1 tornadoes occurred in Durham and Tampa and the most powerful, EF-3 occurred in Andover. 

The Andover, EF-3 tornado, was not only the most powerful that evening, but also the most destructive and one of the most photographed and filmed tornadoes in history. The destructive twister first touched down 4 miles east of McConnell Air Force Base as an EF-1 tearing up roofs along the way. As it moved into Butler County, it increased in strength to an EF-2 and began removing roofs from businesses and residences as the twister then turned north toward Andover. By the time the twister reached highway 54 in Andover, the twister had grown into a powerful EF-3 tornado and was now destroying homes and businesses.

At the Andover YMCA, cars&nbsp;were thrown from the parking lot into the lobby. The powerful&nbsp;twister continued on to the north through multiple neighborhoods&nbsp;before finally lifting off the ground 1 mile southeast of Benton. 

The Andover EF-3 tornado was rated to have 155 mph winds a&nbsp;width of 440 yards and, a 13-mile-long path. More than 1,000&nbsp;structures were damaged, of which approximately 400 were destroyed.&nbsp;Fortunately, no one perished in this tornado or any other tornado&nbsp;that occurred that evening. There were only three injuries.

In 1989, powerful severe thunderstorms raked east and northeast Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana with huge hail and damaging winds. The largest hail, which reached the size of softballs, pummeled Palestine, Texas. The extent of damage was not reported. Tennis ball-sized hail caused around $10 million damage in Pine Bluff, Ark.&nbsp;

A red flag warning has been issued for counties in our area for Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a red flag warning in effect from 1-8 p.m. Sunday for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds at 20 to 25 mph with gusts of 35 to 40 mph and relative humidity in the 19 to 22 percent range are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Periodic rain showers will continue through Thursday. The highest rainfall totals are forecast to remain across southern Kansas where more than two inches is possible.

UPDATE: Chances for rainfall through Thursday drop for area

Several new low-temperature records were set across the area this morning, including in Salina.

On the same day that Salina recorded the hottest temperature in the nation in 1989, the city also set its low-temperature record Sunday morning. According to the National Weather Service, Salina's low temperature this morning was 27 degrees, breaking a low record of 28 degrees that was set in 1909.

Salina breaks more than 100-year-old low temp record Sunday

In 1989, Salina was the hot spot in the nation with a high of 105 degrees. The high was also an April record for the State of Kansas. In 1958, an astonishing two-day snowstorm buried parts of South Central Montana with five to six feet of snow.&nbsp;&nbsp;
