The Southeast of Saline softball team kept the good times rolling on Monday, tossing a pair of shutouts to sweep Sacred Heart 11-0 and 14-0.

Game One: SE of Saline 11, Sacred Heart 0

Southeast wasted no time getting on the board in game one, striking for three runs in the top of the first, and following that with another in the second, five more in the third, and a pair in the fifth to force the mercy rule.

At the plate, the Lady Trojans shared the wealth once again, with eight different players recording a hit and five different players driving in at least a run.

Abby Wyatt continues to swing one of the hottest bats in the state of Kansas, turning in another 4-4 performance with two more driven in.

Kyiah Samelson was an RBI machine in the opener, bringing four runs across on two hits and scoring two times as well.

In the circle, Karlee Zurfluh dominated, allowing just one hit in five scoreless innings while recording eight strikeouts and issuing no walks.

Game Two: SE of Saline 14, Sacred Heart 0

SES picked up right where they left off in the nightcap, taking a 2-0 lead into the second, but the Knights actually managed to silence the Southeast bats through the second and third.

That momentum would not hold, however, and in both the fourth and fifth innings, SES rattled off six unanswered runs to once again end the game early.

The Lady Trojan lineup somehow managed to one-up itself with nine different players recording a hit in game two and seven driving in a run.

While everyone contributed, Kimber Ogorzolka was the star of the show in the nightcap, cashing in a 3-3 performance at the plate, highlighted by four RBI.

Avery Kinkelaar looked borderline unhittable in the circle, completing the second complete game shutout of the day and allowing just one hit and three walks to five strikeouts.

With these results, the Lady Trojans improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in league play, while the Lady Knights slide to 1-7 and 1-5 respectively.

SES will be on the road this Thursday to take on the white hot 8-0 Lady Irish of Chapman, while Sacred Heart returns to Salina to face Republic County.

The Sacred Heart state golf title defense is off to a strong start as on Thursday, the Knights punched up to win the McPherson Invitational, a tournament that included several 4 and 5A schools.

Sacred Heart is in search of an unprecedented 10th-straight state golf championship, and is working with a mostly new squad after graduating four seniors last spring.

The Knights claimed victory at the McPherson Invite, carding a 318 as a team, good enough to keep Buhler at bay by two strokes.

Will Tuttle, Dom Matteucci and Luke Newell led the charge from the top ten, finishing third, fifth and ninth respectively, with Luke Newell hot on their heels in 11th.

Sacred Heart golf wins McPherson Invitational

The Bill Snyder Family/Sunflower Chapter of the National Football Foundation has announced its special recognition awards for the 2024-25 academic year.

The winners will be honored at the annual chapter&nbsp;awards dinner to be conducted May 7 at the Shamrock Plaza at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kan. Check-in and a reception begin at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. (NOTE:&nbsp;12 student-athletes who are high school seniors in 2024-25 will be announced later as Sunflower Chapter scholarship award winners).

Andover Central head coach Derek Tuttle&nbsp;and&nbsp;Southeast of Saline head coach Mitch Gebhardt&nbsp;were named the Don Fambrough Coaches of the Year. The legendary late Kansas head football coach, Fambrough was also a member of the Jayhawks’ 1947 Orange Bowl team. He led the Jayhawks to the 1973 Liberty and 1981 Hall of Fame bowls.

A native of Grinnell, Kan., Tuttle played two years at Bethany College before completing his education at Kansas State. He has been a fixture at Andover schools since 1998 and became head coach at Andover Central in 2019, registering a 57-15 record in six years. That includes Class 4A runner-up finishes in 2019, 21, 23 and the title this past season, defeating Bishop Miege 49-42. Gebhardt, who graduated from Ellsworth High School and Fort Hays State University, is 143-74 in 22 years combined at Lincoln and Southeast of Saline. Southeast of Saline is 54-4 in his last five seasons. The Trojans claimed the Class 2A title this past season with a 36-28 win over Nemaha Central.

The Kansas Coaching Legends Lifetime Achievement award will be given to&nbsp;Tom Young. Trailing only Silver Lake's C.J. Hamilton and Pittsburg Colgan's Chuck Smith as the winningest HS football coach in Kansas history with a 343-11 record in 44 years (Hanover: 1971-79; Wellington: 1980-82; Derby: 1983-2003; Leavenworth: 2004-05; McPherson: 2006-14). He has state championships in 1979, 1982, 1994. He is originally from Adams, Neb.

The John and Phil Laurie Officiating Award goes to&nbsp;David Haynes, a resident of Wichita, Kan. He has been self-employed in the construction industry for the past 20 years and began working high school football in 2014. Since then, he has worked 19 playoff games in that span. He officiated high school basketball from 1992-2000 working several substate rounds. He also officiated college basketball from 1995-2023, working numerous KCAC and Jayhawk conference championships. Haynes worked several NAIA regional championships and three NJCAA Division I National Tournaments, twice officiating the national championship.

The Dick Foster Legacy Award, created last year and awarded posthumously to the Jayhawk Conference coaching legend will be presented to&nbsp;Troy Morrell.&nbsp;Born in Benkelman, Neb., and a graduate of Buhler, Kan. High School, he played at Butler Community College and later Fort Hays State University. He returned to Butler as the OL coach and OC from 1996-1999. From 2000-14 he was the Butler head coach, amassing a 154-22 mark including a 30-3 mark in the NJCAA Region VI playoffs. He won NJCAA national titles in 2003, 07, 08.

NEW YORK (AP) — Trent Grisham, Ben Rice and Austin Wells each hit a solo home run off Seth Lugo in the fifth inning, and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Monday night in their first meeting since last year's AL Division Series.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. tied the score in the fourth with his sixth homer, an inning after Bobby Witt Jr.’s home run against Carlos Carrasco (2-1) on the 10th pitch of his at-bat put Kansas City ahead.

Carrasco and four relievers combined on a two-hitter for the Yankees, whose starters entered with a 5.40 ERA.

New York (9-7) had lost five of its previous seven games. The Yankees beat the Royals in four games during their ALDS last October.

Coyotes complete sweep of Tabor in 14-8 victory

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cole Ragans managed to pitch through a left hamstring cramp for 7 2/3 innings and get his first win this season.

“The hammy started to tighten up and I just didn’t want to push it,” Ragans said after leading the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Guardians 4-2 on Sunday.

A 27-year-old left-hander who finished fourth in AL Cy Young Award voting last year, Ragans struck out 10 and walked none while allowing two runs — one earned — and four hits.

Ragans (1-0) felt a nagging pain in his hamstring throughout the game, but it intensified after he got Austin Hedges to pop out for the second out of the eighth inning. Lucas Erceg relieved and got the last out of the inning. Carlos Estévez allowed a leadoff single in the ninth, then struck out three straight batters for his fifth save in six chances.

“You don’t want it to where it turns more serious than it actually is," Ragans said. "There was no reason to keep trying to pitch.”

Kansas City was optimistic Ragans will take his next turn, likely Friday in Detroit.

“He was honest with us throughout the game and was honest with us when he started feeling in more in the eighth inning,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He was trying to be smart and not push through it, which was the right thing to do.”

Ragans threw 89 pitches and became the second pitcher in Royals’ history to have 10 or more strikeouts in three consecutive starts after Kevin Appier in 1996.

Cleveland took a 2-0 lead in the second when Daniel Schneemann hit an RBI double and continued home on shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.’s throwing error. Ragans then retired nine straight batters and 17 of his last 18.

Kansas City rallied when Salvador Perez hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Maikel Garcia had a two-run double in the fifth.

“I try to get quick outs,” Ragans said. “If I’m filling up the strike zone, then (the hitters) are going to have to swing the bats. I just try to get ahead in the count and stay ahead and trust the guys behind me to make plays. If they are swinging early in the count, it might help you later to get them to chase some pitches.”

 </figure>CLEVELAND (AP) — Cole Ragans managed to pitch through a left hamstring cramp for 7 2/3 innings and get his first win this season.“The hammy started to tighten up and I just didn’t want to push it,” Ragans said after leading the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Guardians 4-2 on Sunday.A 27-year-old left-hander who finished fourth in AL Cy Young Award voting last year, Ragans struck out 10 and walked none while allowing two runs — one earned — and four hits.Ragans (1-0) felt a nagging pain in his hamstring throughout the game, but it intensified after he got Austin Hedges to pop out for the second out of the eighth inning. Lucas Erceg relieved and got the last out of the inning. Carlos Estévez allowed a leadoff single in the ninth, then struck out three straight batters for his fifth save in six chances.“You don’t want it to where it turns more serious than it actually is," Ragans said. "There was no reason to keep trying to pitch.”Kansas City was optimistic Ragans will take his next turn, likely Friday in Detroit.“He was honest with us throughout the game and was honest with us when he started feeling in more in the eighth inning,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He was trying to be smart and not push through it, which was the right thing to do.”Ragans threw 89 pitches and became the second pitcher in Royals’ history to have 10 or more strikeouts in three consecutive starts after Kevin Appier in 1996.Cleveland took a 2-0 lead in the second when Daniel Schneemann hit an RBI double and continued home on shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.’s throwing error. Ragans then retired nine straight batters and 17 of his last 18.Kansas City rallied when Salvador Perez hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Maikel Garcia had a two-run double in the fifth.“I try to get quick outs,” Ragans said. “If I’m filling up the strike zone, then (the hitters) are going to have to swing the bats. I just try to get ahead in the count and stay ahead and trust the guys behind me to make plays. If they are swinging early in the count, it might help you later to get them to chase some pitches.”

The Salina Liberty mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback on Saturday night but dropped their fourth straight AF1 contest at the hands of the Southwest Kansas Storm by a final score of 22-20.

With this result, the Liberty fall to 0-4 while the Storm improve to 3-2.

Salina started this game with a bang as Jamario Benson found Malik Honeycutt twice on the opening drive, including a shot to the end zone to put the Liberty on top 6-0.

The Liberty kept the momentum when they intercepted an errant Jalen Morton pass in the end zone on the Storm’s first drive but lost a bit of steam when a bad snap rolled to the back of the end zone for a safety.

Southwest Kansas picked up the pace offensively in the second quarter as Morton found Demarius Washington for a touchdown pass of his own, giving the Storm their first lead of the game 9-6.

In his return to Tony’s Pizza Events Center, the former Liberty star showed out, as Washington would catch 10 passes on 19 targets, finishing his day with 144 yards and two TDs.

A field goal late in the third quarter and the second touchdown pass to Washington put the Storm up 19-6, and it appeared to be all Southwest Kansas going into the fourth.

With a chance to put the game out of reach, the Storm threw a pass that was caught, jarred loose, deflected into the air, and tipped into the hands of DeWayne Autrey for the Morton’s third interception of the game.

In the midst of their next drive, Salina changed things up, returning Javin Kilgo under center, and Kilgo delivered, finding Honeycutt in the back of the end zone for his second touchdown catch of the day.

The Storm would stretch the lead back to nine with a made field goal, but Salina wasn’t done yet, scoring on a toss play to Tracy Brooks from the four-yard line to cut the lead to two.

Salina got the stop they needed on the ensuing drive but couldn’t find the score they needed with under a minute to go.

Seemingly out of the game, the Liberty stalled for time, but three straight stops, including one on third down that stopped the clock, and another on fourth down in the closing seconds, bought the Liberty one final chance to take the lead.

Austin Nuefield came out to attempt his second field goal of the day, but another bad snap rendered a kick impossible, as holder Tracy Brooks scrambled around and threw a desperation pass through the back of the end zone to secure the Liberty’s fate.

KWU men's and women's tennis defeats Friends

WICHITA - Kansas Wesleyan Women's Track and Field continued its season this weekend at the KT Woodman Classic hosted by Wichita State University and Cessna Stadium.

Competing against some top NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA and junior college athletes, the Coyotes had some outstanding performances.

BALDWIN CITY - Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football had their backs to the wall at the end of the game on Saturday against Baker University.

A huge defensive stand by the Coyotes would secure a 14-13 win in the Kansas Conference game between the teams.

It was the final KCAC game for Wesleyan, who still has two regular-season games left against Ottawa on Tuesday and Midland on Thursday, but both are non-conference games.

KWU will head into the KCAC tournament with an 8-1 record in conference play, and will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament which starts April 25 in Kansas City.

KWU was holding onto the 14-13 advantage when Baker got the ball back at its own 11 with 1:45 left in the game. Baker drove to the KWU-8 when Wesleyan's defense kicked into high gear. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/f90d26d3-685c-4bae-98ef-c465019dbb2b?elinkdata=24506">Alexa Mansur</a> was the hero for the Coyotes stopping Llorente for a 1-yard gain, then on back-to-back plays breaking up passes, including on fourth and goal at the KWU-2 to give the ball back to the Coyotes and secure the win.

Baker took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter with 2:17 left on an 11-yard play where Tara Llorente lateralled to Gabriella Zabaletta to finish the final seven yards.

The Wildcats took a 13-0 with 9:41 left in the second quarter on a 2-yard Llorente touchdown run.

The Coyotes finally got on the board as time expired in the first half. Getting the ball at their own 6 with 30 seconds left, the Coyotes went 74 yards, getting big plays as <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/6b450f5a-dc91-4b3b-af7c-ddf235c36909?elinkdata=24506">Chihiro Iwata</a> hit <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/657d179a-ade3-48e0-908a-62a4c6c3c0c5?elinkdata=24506">Aliyah Wood</a> for 30 yards and two plays later a 20-yarder. Iwata would find Wood for the touchdown and the PAT was good making it 13-7 at the half.

Wood made a big play on defense to start the second half intercepting a Llorente pass and setting up Wesleyan's go-ahead scoring drive. Iwata hit Wood for another 20-yard play on the drive and Iwata converted a fourth-and-goal at the Baker 2 to <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d6b0259b-b631-41b7-a2b0-343765cb863d?elinkdata=24506">Ciaran DeCuir</a> with 4:22 left in the third.

Iwata was 17 of 34 passing for 180 yards with two scores. She added 33 yards rushing in the game. Wood had seven catches for 99 yards and a score to lead the KWU receivers.

Mansur had three flag pulls and two pass breakups for the KWU defense.

KWU Flag Football uses defensive stand to beat Baker 14-13

HILLSBORO - Kansas Wesleyan Baseball picked up a pair of crucial Kansas Conference victories on Saturday as the Coyotes swept the Tabor Bluejays 11-8 and 17-9 at the Tabor College Baseball Field.

In the opener, the Coyotes jumped out to a 2-0 lead on <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/49799a58-fbb1-467c-aab8-087f1fd8065e?elinkdata=24475">Tyler Favretto's</a> 2-run homer that followed <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/962f69e3-6406-4c0f-ae83-d63c6959c19f?elinkdata=24475">Jacob Williamson</a> getting hit by a pitch.

Tabor tied it up in the bottom of the second inning, before the Coyotes scored two runs in each of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

In the third Williamson led things off with a walk and three batters later <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/69deecf2-25ed-42e1-8bee-a11d38fef915?elinkdata=24475">Fernando Ruvalcaba</a> doubled to bring in Williamson. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/aff148e1-ef58-4fa6-9e8d-1e90af0a9627?elinkdata=24475">Carter Allen</a> then followed with a run-scoring hit to put KWU up 4-2.

Williamson hit a 2-run homer in the fourth after <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/bb906417-eafe-4483-87cb-64b69ebbcfe1?elinkdata=24475">Chase Aurand</a> had singled.

In the fifth, <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/df5314c3-e612-4c4b-9fac-3a49ad769c81?elinkdata=24475">Garrett Garfield</a> led off the inning with a homer and Ruvalcaba followed with a double. Allen reached on an error and a later passed ball allowed the second run to score.

Tabor got four runs on a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth.

Williamson singled and Favretto reached on an error to start the KWU sixth and later in the inning Allen singled to bring in a run and the second run of the inning came on a balk.

Aurand homered in the seventh for the Coyotes.

Tabor got two runs in the seventh but could not find a way to rally, leaving the tying run at the plate on a ground out to end the game.

Williams and Allen had three hits for the Coyotes. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/29b8c1a3-3f0c-4c49-9afe-025f9accca00?elinkdata=24475">Brett Maddock</a> got the win going six innings-plus, allowing eight runs on 11 hits. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/781ab839-c2dc-49db-8feb-9e76500ad77b?elinkdata=24475">Riley Gwin</a> went two thirds of an inning before <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/29687d82-1d2f-4899-904a-1e3a8682ca41?elinkdata=24475">Ritter Steinmann</a> closed it out going two and a third allowing only two hits and had three strikeouts for the save.

The first 11 runs of the second game came via a home run by both teams.

Wesleyan put four on the board in the first as Williams reached on an error, Favretto walked and Ruvalcaba singled to load the bases for <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/6ec376b5-b594-4fe2-b540-b309c076e235?elinkdata=24475">Carter Allen</a> to unload them with a grand slam to make it 4-0.

Tabor had a 3-run homer in the bottom of the inning.

Williamson connected for a solo shot in the second, and in the third Allen homered again, this time a 2-run shot. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/e225d563-4e41-4e37-904e-cf9e9062021b?elinkdata=24475">Joe Finder</a> immediately followed with a solo shot for the Coyotes.

Tabor scored the first non-homer run in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly.

Finder drove in two in the fourth with a bases loaded double that made it 10-4.

Tabor got four runs in the fourth, three of them on a homer, but the Bluejays could only put one more on the board the rest of the way.

The Coyotes hit three homers in the sixth as Ruvalcaba and Allen went back-to-back and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/27eb2048-d0f7-4c4f-9b80-597bf8f8a4b2?elinkdata=24475">Blake Dale</a> hit one later in the inning.

Wesleyan added three more in the seventh. Williams led off with a double and scored on Favretto's single.

Allen stepped up later in the inning with a chance to complete the home run cycle needing just a 3-run homer for the feat, but the Coyotes only had one runner on base after Ruvalcaba had singled in a run. Allen would walk and the Coyotes got the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.

Allen drove in seven with three hits, all homers. Ruvalcaba and Dale had three hits each.

Kansas Wesleyan Softball team hosted a KCAC foe as the Avila University Eagles came to town for a regular season double header. The Coyotes and Eagles would split one each on the day.

KWU defense got out of the first with no damage after the Eagles left three runners stranded on base. The Coyotes couldn't find any runs themselves either as the Eagles held them to no hits through two innings.

After a near comeback, the Eagles would find the third and final out through a Coyotes pop fly. AU took game one 4-3 over KWU.The Coyotes showed a short memory as they would come out in game two. KWU started <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/2dff8f46-aaea-48f8-a920-c6a18ccd993b?elinkdata=24444">Alli Mickelsen</a> as pitcher for game two where the Eagles would find 1 run in the top first but the Coyotes responded quickly with 4 runs in the bottom of the first through four hits by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/37b53afb-50f3-484c-8e13-d84e06357d2f?elinkdata=24444">Hailey Summers</a>, Trinity Miller, Jenna Soul and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d2bad4dc-0b86-4926-a371-fc3828622c3a?elinkdata=24444">Elli Han</a> to make the score 4-1.KWU allowed zero runs and zero hits with only one error in the top second. The bats continued to find hits as KWU found four more hits. The Coyotes would collect an easy three outs in the top of the 5th to walk away with a run rule victory in game two 12-1.KWU is now 18-20 overall on the season and 9-11 in conference play.
