KSHSAA TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;The Kansas State High School Activities Association Executive Board approved several items during the June meeting. Starting in 2024, State Football will be held at three locations with three games taking place at each site. State soccer and wrestling will also see changes coming in the near future. The board also finalized the SB 113 Policy for home school and non-public school student participation.

Though the locations are to be determined at a later date, State Football for 2024 will be held&nbsp;November 29th&nbsp;and 30th with one game on Friday and two games on Saturday at each location.

“The KSHSAA is at a point where we want to look at what combining sites in a few of our championships would look like. We believe it can add to the student and fan experience,” said Executive Director Bill Faflick. “Kansas has a rich tradition of great community support where we host championships. We do not anticipate that changing, it will just look slightly different depending on the year and selection of hosts.”

The&nbsp;soccer&nbsp;postseason will under go some adjustments as well. All championships will be played at one site starting in the fall of 2024. Adjustment to soccer postseason are:

-Seeding Criteria Remains the Same (East #1-4 &amp; West #1-4)

- Play on Monday (Boys SCW 18 &amp; Girls SCW 47)

- Seeding criteria remains the same (East #1 vs. West #2 &amp; West #1 vs. East #2)

- Play on Wednesday (Boys SCW 18 &amp; Girls SCW 47)

- Play on Saturday (Boys SCW 18 &amp; Girls SCW 47)

Wrestling&nbsp;will also see changes for this school year. Following the previously release change to 4A and 3-1A boys and girls wrestling in Salina, 6A and 5A will follow the same three day format at Hartman Arena. With the approved alterations the State Wrestling Championships will take place&nbsp;February 22, 23 and 24, 2024. The Executive Board also approved the Optimal Performance Calculator (OPC) for use starting this school year. Full details on the state schedule and the OPC use will be sent to school leaders at a later date.

Another approved change coming this school year deals with regional dates for&nbsp;baseball&nbsp;at the 3A and 2-1A level. In an effort to help with pitcher availability, the regional seeding date has been moved up to the Saturday of&nbsp; SCW 44 to allow for the first round games of regionals to be played on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of SCW 45. The second round (semifinals and finals) will take place Monday or Wednesday of&nbsp; SCW 46.

Basketball&nbsp;and&nbsp;volleyball&nbsp;postseason formats were discussed and tabled for further discussion.

Based upon the inclusion of non-public school student eligibility in the state budget bill, multiple rule modifications are necessary to adhere to House Sub for SB 113 from this year’s legislative session. The new policy language will be distributed to school leaders and posted on the KSHSAA website later this summer.

Full details on the above items along with other action from the June KSHSAA Executive Board meeting will be distributed with the minutes in July.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Prosecutors have dropped a misdemeanor assault charge filed last October against Las Vegas Raiders' wide receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/davante-adams">Davante Adams</a>&nbsp;after he&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-las-vegas-raiders-nfl-sports-davante-adams-9db797d4dd4fab59f16cea83324f918e">shoved a photographer to the ground</a>&nbsp;as he left the field following a loss at Kansas City.

The case filed in Kansas City municipal court was dismissed June 5, the Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article2767">reported</a>.

Adams' attorney, J.R. Hobbs, declined to comment.

Police in Kansas City, Missouri, have said Adams pushed Ryan Zebley to the ground while running off the field after the Raiders lost 30-29 to the Chiefs on Oct. 10. Police at the time called it an “intentional, overt act” that caused whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion.

Adams apologized in his postgame comments to the media and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/tae15adams/status/1579687398686228480?s=20&amp;t=jZwbBGXeaBWRP2YcD4TL5A">later on Twitter</a>.

“He jumped in front of me coming off the field. I kind of pushed him. He ended up on the ground,” Adams said after the game. “I want to apologize to him for that. That was just frustration mixed with him really just running in front of me."

Zebley was carrying video equipment for a local production company contracted with ESPN to cover the game. He sued Adams, the Raiders and the Chiefs in May, saying he was targeted online and feared for his safety in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

The lawsuit filed in Jackson County Circuit Court is ongoing, the Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article275795346.html">reported</a>.

Charge dropped against Raiders' Adams for shoving  photographer in KC

MORGANTOWN (AP) —Assistant Josh Eilert has been selected as the interim coach at West Virginia, punctuating a hectic week after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-arrested-dui-pittsburgh-west-virginia-fb441762888b47bade5efb1b4e247da0">Bob Huggins resigned following a drunken driving arrest</a>.

Eilert, who has no previous head coaching experience, emerged as athletic director Wren Baker’s choice to shepherd the team through a challenging offseason stretch. Baker stayed in-house and chose not to hire a full-time coach given the limited options of conducting a nationwide search in June and the urgency of finding someone — anyone — with the start of practice only four months away.

“I spoke with knowledgeable basketball people around the country over the last week, including coaches, professional basketball executives and others of whom I trust to identify a strong group of candidates to speak with,” Baker said in a statement announcing the move Saturday night. “Ultimately what I came to recognize, was that conducting this search in late June was difficult for many of our candidates and also it put our talented student-athletes at a real disadvantage. With that said, we will conduct our national search at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.”

Under NCAA rules, West Virginia’s players have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal, and several apparently have chosen to do so, although they have the option to return. Eilert could be the glue that keeps together an upper class-heavy roster built largely through transfers.

“Josh Eilert is the right person to lead our men’s basketball program next season,” Baker said. “He has been an important part of our success, and he has displayed great integrity, work ethic and dedication. He has been involved in all facets of our program during his time on the basketball staff, and he has earned this opportunity to coach our team on an interim basis for the 2023-24 season.”

The 43-year-old Eilert first joined Huggins as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 2006, then followed him to West Virginia in 2007. Eilert has had a variety of roles with the Mountaineers, including video coordinator and director of basketball operations, before being named an assistant coach in July 2022.

“I would like to thank Wren Baker, President Gee, Rob Alsop, Steve Uryasz and the rest of our administration for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to lead our storied Mountaineer basketball program,” Eilert said. “I would also like to thank Coach Huggins for retaining me on his staff at K-State in 2006 and for bringing me to West Virginia in 2007. I’ve learned so much from Coach Huggins, and it was an honor to work for a Hall of Fame coach for the last 17 years."

Among others who were linked to the opening were UAB coach and former Huggins assistant Andy Kennedy, and former West Virginia and Michigan coach John Beilein.

Huggins had assembled arguably one of the better recruiting classes in the country from the portal for next season, including Syracuse center Jesse Edwards, Arizona guard Kerr Kriisa, Manhattan guards Jose Perez and Omar Silverio, and Montana State guard RaeQuan Battle.

Huggins’ 16-year run as West Virginia’s coach ended with his resignation on June 17. The day before, he was charged with driving under the influence in Pittsburgh. According to a criminal complaint, Huggins initially believed he was in Columbus, Ohio. A breath test determined Huggins’ blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 3 in Pittsburgh.

Huggins also pleaded no contest in 2004 to driving under the influence when he was the coach at Cincinnati. He was fired a year later amid a power struggle with the school’s president as well as the aftermath of the DUI arrest.

His resignation at West Virginia came a month after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-homophobic-slur-west-virginia-xavier-77ce70b41112a0062421ad9405558473">university suspended him for three games</a>&nbsp;for using an anti-gay slur while also denigrating Catholics during a radio interview.

The 69-year-old Huggins was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame last September.

Former KSU grad assistant will replace Bob Huggins at West Virginia

BROOKLYN, N.Y.&nbsp;– Kansas guard Gradey Dick and forward Jalen Wilson were among the 58 players selected in the 2023 NBA Draft, held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn Thursday night. &nbsp; Dick was the overall No. 13 choice of the Toronto Raptors, while Wilson was taken by the Brooklyn Nets and was the No. 51 selection. &nbsp; “I was obviously very happy for Gradey,” Kansas coach Bill Self said while exiting Barclays Center. “We had heard somewhere between 10 and 14 probably and he goes 13. I think that is a very good fit for him and Toronto. Jalen didn’t get drafted where he hoped he would but the bottom line is it’s all about fits at that point, once you get into the second round. I know his representation feels like it’s a really good fit and Brooklyn was very excited to get him. I’m happy with that and feel like he will have a heck of a chance to be a part of their roster.” &nbsp; Dick becomes the 19th lottery selection in Kansas history and the 13th in the Bill Self era, w hich. Began in 2003-04. The NBA lottery began in 1985 and recognizes the top 14 players chosen in the NBA Draft. With the selections of Dick and Wilson, KU now has 87 all-time NBA Draft selections, including 29 in the Self era. Since the NBA adopted a two-round draft in 1989, Kansas has had 28 first-round selections and 42 total draft picks. &nbsp; In one season at Kansas, Dick made a huge impact as he set the KU freshman record for three-point field goals made with 83. I think that is a very good fit for him and Toronto. Jalen didn’t get drafted where he hoped he would but the bottom line is it’s all about fits at that point, once you get into the second round. Kansas Duo Selected in the 2023 NBA Draft

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Incoming freshman&nbsp;Darrin “Dai Dai” Ames Jr.&nbsp;(Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy)&nbsp;has been selected as a 2023 Jordan Brand Classic All-American, becoming one of 32 high school seniors to earn the recognition.

The Chicago native and Kenwood Academy alum is just the third Wildcat to be chosen a Jordan Brand Classic All-American, joining current graduate student manager&nbsp;Curtis Kelly&nbsp;(2006) and&nbsp;Wally Judge&nbsp;(2009).

Ames arrives at K-State after a stellar career at Kenwood Academy, where he led the Broncos to 54 wins the past 2 seasons, including back-to-back Illinois Class 4A Super-Sectional titles – the first in the school's history. The 4-star and consensus top-70 recruit was named to nearly every All-State team in 2023, including First Team Class 4A honors from The Associated Press, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association,&nbsp;City/Suburban Hoops Report&nbsp;and SBLive.

Ames scored more than 1,500 points in his prep career, including an epic school-record 65-point outburst in a win over Southland College Prep on Dec. 26, 2022. As a senior, he averaged 21.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.4 steals, connecting on 51.3 percent (218-of-425) from the field and 81.9 percent (150-of-183) from the line.

'Dai Dai' Ames named Jordan Brand All-American

BROOKLYN, N.Y.&nbsp;– Senior forward&nbsp;Keyontae Johnson&nbsp;was selected with the No. 50 pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2023 NBA Draft presented by State Farm&nbsp;on Thursday night&nbsp;(June 22) at the Barclays Center.

Johnson is the first player to be drafted out of K-State since&nbsp;Wes Iwundu&nbsp;(Orlando Magic) was taken in the 2017 NBA Draft with the 33rd&nbsp;selection. He is the first K-State player to be drafted since the Thunder moved to Oklahoma City in 2008. He is the second Wildcat to be drafted by the franchise and the first since&nbsp;Steve Honeycutt&nbsp;was selected by the Seattle Supersonics in 1969.

Overall, Johnson is the 51st&nbsp;Wildcat selected in the NBA Draft dating back to 1947.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It’s just a tremendous relief,” said Johnson. “I just trusted the process and knew that I would playing in the NBA.”

Johnson was joined in the Thunder draft class by Duke’s&nbsp;Dereck Lively III&nbsp;and Clemson’s&nbsp;Hunter Tyson.

🏀 MBB: Kansas duo selected in NBA Draft

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– The Kansas State men's basketball team will open the 2023-24 season against USC in the 2023 Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas&nbsp;on Monday, Nov. 6&nbsp;in a quadruple-header at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. &nbsp; In addition to the contest between the Wildcats and Trojans, the quadruple-header will include women's games between defending NCAA national champion LSU and Colorado as well as USC and Ohio State, along with a men's matchup between Georgia and Oregon.

Tickets for the event are scheduled to go on sale in mid-July. On-sale date, game times and television &nbsp;broadcast information will be released at a later date.

The matchup will mark the first time in more than 20 seasons that K-State will open the season away from home since a 73-64 loss to BYU at the Paradise Jam on Nov. 23, 2002, in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. It will be just the 10th season opener away from home since 1970, including the fourth neutral site matchup.

K-State is 4-1 all-time against USC, including an 80-67 win in the last meeting with the Trojans in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. This will be the second meeting in Las Vegas after a 68-55 win by the Wildcats at the 2006 Las Vegas Holiday Classic on Dec. 22, 2006.

K-State has made several visits to Las Vegas in recent years, including the 2006 Las Vegas Holiday Classic and the 2008 and 2017 Las Vegas Invitationals held at the Orleans Arena. The Wildcats have also played the hometown Runnin’ Rebels in Las Vegas in 2009 and 2019. This will be the school’s first game in T-Mobile Arena.

Led by 11th-year head coach&nbsp;Andy Enfield, USC posted a 22-11 overall record, including a tie for second place in the Pac-12 with a 14-6 mark, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season in 2022-23. He has led the Trojans to 95 wins over the last 4 seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2020-21.

USC is expected to return starters&nbsp;Kobe Johnson(9.2 ppg.) and&nbsp;Joshua Morgan&nbsp;(7.0 ppg.), along with former 5-star 7-foot-1 big man&nbsp;Vince Iwuchukwu&nbsp;(5.4 ppg.), who played in only 14 games with 5 starts after recovering from a medical emergency. The Trojans also have the nation’s 4th-ranked recruiting class that includes ESPN’s top-ranked incoming freshman&nbsp;Isaiah Collier&nbsp;as well as 20th-ranked freshman&nbsp;Bronny James.

K-State to Open with USC in 2023 Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas

HEAD COACH ANDY REID&nbsp;OPENING STATEMENT:&nbsp;

“Alright,&nbsp;we’re&nbsp;finished up with our OTAs which is a good thing. Guys came out relatively healthy and ready to go. There are a couple of guys that I’m not sure you guys&nbsp;know&nbsp;about&nbsp;that&nbsp;I’ll put out there. Blake Bell had an appendectomy and that’s why he wasn’t at practice and then Mike Edwards had a hamstring.&nbsp;(Trent)&nbsp;McDuffie had this stress on his&nbsp;fibula. He should be ok though. I mean all these guys should be ok&nbsp;once&nbsp;we get&nbsp;downthe&nbsp;road.&nbsp;(Isiah)&nbsp;Pacheco had shoulder surgery, you know that. Trey&nbsp;Smith had a&nbsp;tricep&nbsp;that he hurt – strained&nbsp;it&nbsp;just&nbsp;a little bit during the later part of camp.&nbsp;L’Jarius&nbsp;Sneed’s knee. We’ve&nbsp;kind&nbsp;of&nbsp;backed&nbsp;off of&nbsp;him to make sure that we kept the swelling down there and then(Tershawn)&nbsp;Wharton had the knee surgery.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;with that&nbsp;-&nbsp;those are kind of the primary guys that didn’t work or worked just partially this&nbsp;camp&nbsp;here,&nbsp;but it was good to get the guys out there working. They pushed themselves, they challenged each other within the rules that we’re given here&nbsp;and it’s a good foundation to take up to training camp.&nbsp;They’ve&nbsp;got to maintain it here now for the next four&nbsp;weeks,&nbsp;but they’ll do that. I’ll take a little&nbsp;time&nbsp;off and then get back cranking and&nbsp;come back&nbsp;ready for camp.&nbsp;But&nbsp;we got the plays in we wanted to&nbsp;(and)&nbsp;the scheme evals&nbsp;that we did from last year were all covered. And we’re ready to go we’ve&nbsp;just got to get through the next month. With that (the) time’s yours.”

Q:&nbsp;Do you expect the injured guys you just mentioned&nbsp;to&nbsp;be ready to go for camp?

REID:&nbsp;“Most of them will be ready to go.&nbsp;I mean&nbsp;there are&nbsp;couple of them we’re going to&nbsp;just&nbsp;have&nbsp;to&nbsp;see&nbsp;on,&nbsp;so I’ll get you that day one when we&nbsp;get&nbsp;back.”

Q:&nbsp;What were some&nbsp;of&nbsp;your biggest takeaways from your rookies?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;I thought they handled the load of the plays. Without&nbsp;picking out specific guys - in general, that’s what you look at. If&nbsp;they make a&nbsp;mistake&nbsp;are they going to make the mistake twice? And I felt like they worked their way through it and did a pretty good job of the retention part and accuracy within the play.”

Q:&nbsp;How much more&nbsp;comfortable&nbsp;do&nbsp;you feel like&nbsp;Skyy&nbsp;Moore is this year?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah&nbsp;Skyy&nbsp;was targeted quite a bit this preseason, he&nbsp;was one of the&nbsp;higher targets this preseason.&nbsp;He had the most catches or close to the most catches.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;I think he’s taken a good jump. Most of all the quarterback&nbsp;(Patrick Mahomes)&nbsp;trusts him. He’s willing to throw it to him&nbsp;- that’s why&nbsp;I mentioned the number there. The quarterback’s not going to throw it to you if he doesn’t trust you.”

Q:&nbsp;And you feel like his familiarity with everything is higher? Does that show?

REID:&nbsp;“Sure, way different. But listen – (he) still (has) a ton of room to climb and grow. He’s so willing though. You got a chance to see&nbsp;a real&nbsp;– one of the good parts of his personality is when everything was going&nbsp;wrong&nbsp;last year with punt&nbsp;returns&nbsp;he didn’t’ let that bother him. You know he came&nbsp;back&nbsp;and&nbsp;he’d&nbsp;have a big catch in the same game and that was all new territory&nbsp;for him&nbsp;with these punt returns. You know the resiliency&nbsp;and&nbsp;(being)&nbsp;able&nbsp;to focus back in there. That’s a good quality to have.”

Q:&nbsp;Understanding&nbsp;that you haven’t been playing real football yet but what have you seen from Clyde Edwards-Helaire?

REID:&nbsp;“I thought&nbsp;Clyde&nbsp;(Edwards-Helaire)&nbsp;came&nbsp;back in good shape. It was great for him&nbsp;to get all the reps that he did. He did a nice job with it.&nbsp;Obviously,&nbsp;he’s talented. But really for all those running backs it’s just a matter of getting out there that when things are flying, especially around their legs, that they’ve got&nbsp;to&nbsp;make&nbsp;sure that they keep&nbsp;that.&nbsp;But he’s proven&nbsp;that he’s good with all that too.”

Q:&nbsp;How&nbsp;have you seen the defense improve so far this preseason?

REID:&nbsp;“They know what they’re doing now which is a big plus. This time last year&nbsp;everything&nbsp;was new to them and there were quite a few busts. You&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;see those right now. They’re&nbsp;pretty&nbsp;sound&nbsp;in what they’re doing. I like the improvement that they’ve made.”

Q:&nbsp;On Chris Jones’ absence from mandatory&nbsp;mini-camp.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;so Chris&nbsp;(Jones)&nbsp;wasn’t here, kind&nbsp;of&nbsp;like last year, same type of deal. That’s his choice. He chose not to be here. I’m sure he’ll be at training camp.”

Q:&nbsp;Could you talk about the ring ceremony and just having it here in Kansas City when everyone can attend this time around?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah&nbsp;so,&nbsp;we invite people back that&nbsp;are with&nbsp;other teams now. So, it’ll&nbsp;be a&nbsp;little&nbsp;bit&nbsp;like what went&nbsp;on at the White House,but they’re coming back to Kansas&nbsp;City. I think&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;a great deal. I think the Hunts have put together a&nbsp;really&nbsp;nice&nbsp;event&nbsp;for the guys. And I think when it’s all said&nbsp;and&nbsp;done,&nbsp;you’ll&nbsp;be able to hear the response from&nbsp;them. It’s a nice plan there.”

Q:&nbsp;Going back to Chris Jones, you think he’ll be at training camp?&nbsp;

REID:&nbsp;“Well,&nbsp;I’m&nbsp;not sure about anything. I’m not sure I’m&nbsp;gonnabe there (laughter).&nbsp;I got&nbsp;to&nbsp;get through (laughter)&nbsp;I wish I could predict that. I think he’s,&nbsp;you know,&nbsp;there’s a&nbsp;chance that he’s not. We’ll see.”

Q:&nbsp;I know that is&nbsp;General Manager Brett&nbsp;Veach’s&nbsp;territory&nbsp;really&nbsp;but you feel good about it?&nbsp;

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;I don’t even deal with it. I let&nbsp;(General Manager)&nbsp;Brett&nbsp;(Veach)and his group deal with it. If you’re there, you’re there. If&nbsp;you’re&nbsp;not, we keep going. It’s one&nbsp;of&nbsp;those deals so. They’ll work all that out. They’re communicating so that’s important.”

Q:&nbsp;What’s your communication with Chris&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;been about?

REID:&nbsp;“Make sure you’re in shape.”

Q:&nbsp;Could you share any of the emotions or thoughts you had directly after the Super Bowl victory and as the night went on?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;well you have a big party&nbsp;afterwards that goes on like all night (laughter). And then&nbsp;(Executive Vice President of Communications)&nbsp;Ted&nbsp;(Crews)&nbsp;gets me&nbsp;up. I mean&nbsp;really,&nbsp;I don’treally go to sleep. Ted’s knocking early in the morning for a press conference.”

Q:&nbsp;What were you thinking after? Are there any moments you can share?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;you feel like you accomplished something. You’re&nbsp;happy most of all&nbsp;for&nbsp;the guys that have gone through this thing and endured till the end. It’s a&nbsp;long&nbsp;haul with a lot of ups and downs.&nbsp;There are a lot of things that you’ve got to work through whether it’s personally or playing wise you’ve got&nbsp;to&nbsp;work through all that stuff. And so, these guys are humans.&nbsp;Everybody has issues.”

Q:&nbsp;Do you replay any of the plays and think one was a great call?

REID:&nbsp;“Not at that moment, no, no, not at that moment.&nbsp;You’re&nbsp;just happy to be there right then. It slows down the second time, I’ll tell you that. You can enjoy it a little bit more.”

Q:&nbsp;With that in mind, the&nbsp;team&nbsp;has been enjoying a lot of the success and celebrating a lot.&nbsp;With that being said, you&nbsp;have football coming to focus on. How have you been able to manage the celebration with trying to get the job done?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I look at what’s real.&nbsp;I mean we had&nbsp;99 percent&nbsp;of the team here.&nbsp;With the&nbsp;exception&nbsp;of&nbsp;Chris&nbsp;(Jones)&nbsp;everybody was here and working hard. And so that’s the&nbsp;important thing to me. I mean everything else we can talk about but they’re here&nbsp;working,&nbsp;and we’ve got good leadership in that locker&nbsp;room&nbsp;and they know this is all nice.&nbsp;(The)&nbsp;White House was nice, this is going to be nice tonight,&nbsp;but that’s history. It’s all been done.&nbsp;Now it’s forward and that’s the way&nbsp;they’ve approached this offseason. It’s been fun to watch.”

Q:&nbsp;Last year the rookie class talked about wanting to make their own statement and build their legacy with what they did last year. With their experience last year, how do you have them share that with the rookie class this year&nbsp;and keep them motivated again this year?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, well you know&nbsp;you’ve got guys that are motivated guys.&nbsp;You start with the&nbsp;quarterback&nbsp;(Patrick Mahomes)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Trav&nbsp;(Kelce)&nbsp;-&nbsp;they’ve&nbsp;been&nbsp;through the whole&nbsp;thing&nbsp;so they know what it takes to get there and they’re able to communicate that and they do that. You know we’ve got a bunch of guys that were&nbsp;there,&nbsp;and they understand the trials and things&nbsp;(and)&nbsp;the energy that it takes to get there. I’m aware of all that. I get to see it every day and then I get to see them go out there – as some&nbsp;of&nbsp;you guys did – you got to see them go out there and compete&nbsp;(during mandatory mini-camp)&nbsp;and I’m having to slow them down because of the rules which is a good thing.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;they want to challenge each other to go fast and&nbsp;all that so&nbsp;sometimes&nbsp;you’ve&nbsp;got to pump the breaks&nbsp;there&nbsp;a little bit.”

Q:&nbsp;Have you seen the trailer for the Netflix series that PatrickMahomes&nbsp;is featured in?&nbsp;With that crew around last year, what was that like?&nbsp;Will you watch it?

REID:&nbsp;“I don’t know if I’ll watch&nbsp;it,&nbsp;but he handled himself right. So, it didn’t affect&nbsp;anybody&nbsp;and those guys&nbsp;(the film crew)&nbsp;did a nice job of kind of staying away. Everything was distant or our own people&nbsp;working&nbsp;through our own people&nbsp;here&nbsp;and&nbsp;so it wasn’t a distraction. Some of those things can be a distraction, this wasn’t a distraction. Whatever turns up, turns up,&nbsp;but he handled it the right way.”

Q:&nbsp;It looked like you found a&nbsp;lot&nbsp;of&nbsp;work for Wanya Morris during this camp. What did you learn about him and especially his future as a potential left tackle?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I like him. I like his ability. I think that was a good pick&nbsp;there. So, we’ll just see how it all works&nbsp;out&nbsp;once we get going but he held his own. He rotated in a little&nbsp;bit&nbsp;with the one’s and as(Offensive Line&nbsp;Coach)&nbsp;Andy (Heck) does, he kind&nbsp;of&nbsp;gets everybody going&nbsp;there. I’m&nbsp;curious&nbsp;to see how he does once we get going and he’s tired mentally and physically.&nbsp;Let’s&nbsp;see what happens then.”

Q:&nbsp;“I know you had the conditioning test today. What is it?

REID:&nbsp;“This&nbsp;isn’t’ even a test today. This is just they – the test is when they get back. This is just something to – I try to give them&nbsp;allthe things that they’re going to see at camp in some form. This is ashort version of&nbsp;it,&nbsp;but it gives them an idea of where&nbsp;they’re&nbsp;at and what they need to do&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;next&nbsp;four weeks to get themselves ready for&nbsp;camp.&nbsp;So&nbsp;it’s really not - we don’t’ grade them on this or anything. We just let them go and it’s really a self (evaluation)&nbsp;for each one.”

Q:&nbsp;So&nbsp;I could do the&nbsp;conditioning&nbsp;test?

REID:&nbsp;“You might be able to do it (laughter).”

Q:&nbsp;Do you focus on disconnecting during this time before camp? Do you have to think about how you do it?

REID:&nbsp;“I don’t have to think too hard&nbsp;(laughter). I’ll take a little time, yeah. Most of the coaches take time now. You know this was a shorter off season because of what&nbsp;we went through so the coaches jump right into free agency and then the draft evaluation stuff and then&nbsp;the&nbsp;OTAs so there hasn’t been a ton of time off.&nbsp;So&nbsp;this gives guys a chance to get away (and) gives me a chance to get away.”

Q:&nbsp;Will you find a way to not do anything? Are you always still thinking about the game&nbsp;and the upcoming season?

REID:&nbsp;“Vahe&nbsp;(Gregorian)&nbsp;listen, I normally take the mornings (for) an hour or two&nbsp;and knock some stuff out and then I’m good the rest of the time. I’m at the beach but I’m not really, I&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;have that beach body (laughter).”

Q:&nbsp;As the defending Super Bowl champion, did you learn anything from the last time you were the defending Super Bowl champion?Do you have any message this time around for the guys? What about scheme wise?&nbsp;

REID:&nbsp;“As far as scheme,&nbsp;I mean&nbsp;we try to change that up every year a little bit. I mean you’re going to have your base plays but then we try to add a bunch of new stuff in there. It keeps everybody alive and then I’m short and sweet on messages. I think the truth happens on the field. You know toughness – it’s one thing to talk about toughness but the reality is you’ve got to go&nbsp;do it (and)&nbsp;show it. And then when you invest time in something then you’re less likely to put out a poor performance, you take a lot of pride in&nbsp;that,and&nbsp;so time and effort become a big part of being a professional football player. So that’s – I don’t&nbsp;do a lot of talking (in here&nbsp;with media), I don’t do a lot of talking to them (the team). It’s more this is what we’re going to do, let’s go do it with some energy (and) be an energy giver&nbsp;(and)&nbsp;not an energy taker and&nbsp;let’s&nbsp;roll.”

There are a couple of guys that I’m not sure you guys&nbsp;know&nbsp;about&nbsp;that&nbsp;I’ll put out there. Blake Bell had an appendectomy and that’s why he wasn’t at practice and then Mike Edwards had a hamstring.&nbsp;(Trent)&nbsp;McDuffie had this stress on his&nbsp;fibula. He should be ok though. I mean all these guys should be ok&nbsp;once&nbsp;we get&nbsp;downthe&nbsp;road.&nbsp;(Isiah)&nbsp;Pacheco had shoulder surgery, you know that. Trey&nbsp;Smith had a&nbsp;tricep&nbsp;that he hurt – strained&nbsp;it&nbsp;just&nbsp;a little bit during the later part of camp.&nbsp;L’Jarius&nbsp;Sneed’s knee. We’ve&nbsp;kind&nbsp;of&nbsp;backed&nbsp;off of&nbsp;him to make sure that we kept the swelling down there and then(Tershawn)&nbsp;Wharton had the knee surgery.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;with that&nbsp;-&nbsp;those are kind of the primary guys that didn’t work or worked just partially this&nbsp;camp&nbsp;here,&nbsp;but it was good to get the guys out there working. They pushed themselves, they challenged each other within the rules that we’re given here&nbsp;and it’s a good foundation to take up to training camp.&nbsp;They’ve&nbsp;got to maintain it here now for the next four&nbsp;weeks,&nbsp;but they’ll do that. I’ll take a little&nbsp;time&nbsp;off and then get back cranking and&nbsp;come back&nbsp;ready for camp.&nbsp;But&nbsp;we got the plays in we wanted to&nbsp;(and)&nbsp;the scheme evals&nbsp;that we did from last year were all covered. And we’re ready to go we’ve&nbsp;just got to get through the next month. With that (the) time’s yours.”Q:&nbsp;Do you expect the injured guys you just mentioned&nbsp;to&nbsp;be ready to go for camp?REID:&nbsp;“Most of them will be ready to go.&nbsp;I mean&nbsp;there are&nbsp;couple of them we’re going to&nbsp;just&nbsp;have&nbsp;to&nbsp;see&nbsp;on,&nbsp;so I’ll get you that day one when we&nbsp;get&nbsp;back.”Q:&nbsp;What were some&nbsp;of&nbsp;your biggest takeaways from your rookies?REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;I thought they handled the load of the plays. Without&nbsp;picking out specific guys - in general, that’s what you look at. If&nbsp;they make a&nbsp;mistake&nbsp;are they going to make the mistake twice? And I felt like they worked their way through it and did a pretty good job of the retention part and accuracy within the play.”Q:&nbsp;How much more&nbsp;comfortable&nbsp;do&nbsp;you feel like&nbsp;Skyy&nbsp;Moore is this year?REID:&nbsp;“Yeah&nbsp;Skyy&nbsp;was targeted quite a bit this preseason, he&nbsp;was one of the&nbsp;higher targets this preseason.&nbsp;He had the most catches or close to the most catches.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;I think he’s taken a good jump. Most of all the quarterback&nbsp;(Patrick Mahomes)&nbsp;trusts him. He’s willing to throw it to him&nbsp;- that’s why&nbsp;I mentioned the number there. The quarterback’s not going to throw it to you if he doesn’t trust you.”Q:&nbsp;And you feel like his familiarity with everything is higher? Does that show?REID:&nbsp;“Sure, way different. But listen – (he) still (has) a ton of room to climb and grow. He’s so willing though. You got a chance to see&nbsp;a real&nbsp;– one of the good parts of his personality is when everything was going&nbsp;wrong&nbsp;last year with punt&nbsp;returns&nbsp;he didn’t’ let that bother him. You know he came&nbsp;back&nbsp;and&nbsp;he’d&nbsp;have a big catch in the same game and that was all new territory&nbsp;for him&nbsp;with these punt returns. You know the resiliency&nbsp;and&nbsp;(being)&nbsp;able&nbsp;to focus back in there. That’s a good quality to have.”Q:&nbsp;Understanding&nbsp;that you haven’t been playing real football yet but what have you seen from Clyde Edwards-Helaire?REID:&nbsp;“I thought&nbsp;Clyde&nbsp;(Edwards-Helaire)&nbsp;came&nbsp;back in good shape. It was great for him&nbsp;to get all the reps that he did. He did a nice job with it.&nbsp;Obviously,&nbsp;he’s talented. But really for all those running backs it’s just a matter of getting out there that when things are flying, especially around their legs, that they’ve got&nbsp;to&nbsp;make&nbsp;sure that they keep&nbsp;that.&nbsp;But he’s proven&nbsp;that he’s good with all that too.”Q:&nbsp;How&nbsp;have you seen the defense improve so far this preseason?REID:&nbsp;“They know what they’re doing now which is a big plus. This time last year&nbsp;everything&nbsp;was new to them and there were quite a few busts. You&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;see those right now. They’re&nbsp;pretty&nbsp;sound&nbsp;in what they’re doing. I like the improvement that they’ve made.”Q:&nbsp;On Chris Jones’ absence from mandatory&nbsp;mini-camp.REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;so Chris&nbsp;(Jones)&nbsp;wasn’t here, kind&nbsp;of&nbsp;like last year, same type of deal. That’s his choice. He chose not to be here. I’m sure he’ll be at training camp.”Q:&nbsp;Could you talk about the ring ceremony and just having it here in Kansas City when everyone can attend this time around?REID:&nbsp;“Yeah&nbsp;so,&nbsp;we invite people back that&nbsp;are with&nbsp;other teams now. So, it’ll&nbsp;be a&nbsp;little&nbsp;bit&nbsp;like what went&nbsp;on at the White House,but they’re coming back to Kansas&nbsp;City. I think&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;a great deal. I think the Hunts have put together a&nbsp;really&nbsp;nice&nbsp;event&nbsp;for the guys. And I think when it’s all said&nbsp;and&nbsp;done,&nbsp;you’ll&nbsp;be able to hear the response from&nbsp;them. It’s a nice plan there.”Q:&nbsp;Going back to Chris Jones, you think he’ll be at training camp?&nbsp;REID:&nbsp;“Well,&nbsp;I’m&nbsp;not sure about anything. I’m not sure I’m&nbsp;gonnabe there (laughter).&nbsp;I got&nbsp;to&nbsp;get through (laughter)&nbsp;I wish I could predict that. I think he’s,&nbsp;you know,&nbsp;there’s a&nbsp;chance that he’s not. We’ll see.”Q:&nbsp;I know that is&nbsp;General Manager Brett&nbsp;Veach’s&nbsp;territory&nbsp;really&nbsp;but you feel good about it?&nbsp;REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;I don’t even deal with it. I let&nbsp;(General Manager)&nbsp;Brett&nbsp;(Veach)and his group deal with it. If you’re there, you’re there. If&nbsp;you’re&nbsp;not, we keep going. It’s one&nbsp;of&nbsp;those deals so. They’ll work all that out. They’re communicating so that’s important.”Q:&nbsp;What’s your communication with Chris&nbsp;Jones&nbsp;been about?REID:&nbsp;“Make sure you’re in shape.”Q:&nbsp;Could you share any of the emotions or thoughts you had directly after the Super Bowl victory and as the night went on?REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;well you have a big party&nbsp;afterwards that goes on like all night (laughter). And then&nbsp;(Executive Vice President of Communications)&nbsp;Ted&nbsp;(Crews)&nbsp;gets me&nbsp;up. I mean&nbsp;really,&nbsp;I don’treally go to sleep. Ted’s knocking early in the morning for a press conference.”Q:&nbsp;What were you thinking after? Are there any moments you can share?REID:&nbsp;“Yeah,&nbsp;you feel like you accomplished something. You’re&nbsp;happy most of all&nbsp;for&nbsp;the guys that have gone through this thing and endured till the end. It’s a&nbsp;long&nbsp;haul with a lot of ups and downs.&nbsp;There are a lot of things that you’ve got to work through whether it’s personally or playing wise you’ve got&nbsp;to&nbsp;work through all that stuff. And so, these guys are humans.&nbsp;Everybody has issues.”Q:&nbsp;Do you replay any of the plays and think one was a great call?REID:&nbsp;“Not at that moment, no, no, not at that moment.&nbsp;You’re&nbsp;just happy to be there right then. It slows down the second time, I’ll tell you that. You can enjoy it a little bit more.”Q:&nbsp;With that in mind, the&nbsp;team&nbsp;has been enjoying a lot of the success and celebrating a lot.&nbsp;With that being said, you&nbsp;have football coming to focus on. How have you been able to manage the celebration with trying to get the job done?REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I look at what’s real.&nbsp;I mean we had&nbsp;99 percent&nbsp;of the team here.&nbsp;With the&nbsp;exception&nbsp;of&nbsp;Chris&nbsp;(Jones)&nbsp;everybody was here and working hard. And so that’s the&nbsp;important thing to me. I mean everything else we can talk about but they’re here&nbsp;working,&nbsp;and we’ve got good leadership in that locker&nbsp;room&nbsp;and they know this is all nice.&nbsp;(The)&nbsp;White House was nice, this is going to be nice tonight,&nbsp;but that’s history. It’s all been done.&nbsp;Now it’s forward and that’s the way&nbsp;they’ve approached this offseason. It’s been fun to watch.”Q:&nbsp;Last year the rookie class talked about wanting to make their own statement and build their legacy with what they did last year. With their experience last year, how do you have them share that with the rookie class this year&nbsp;and keep them motivated again this year?REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, well you know&nbsp;you’ve got guys that are motivated guys.&nbsp;You start with the&nbsp;quarterback&nbsp;(Patrick Mahomes)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Trav&nbsp;(Kelce)&nbsp;-&nbsp;they’ve&nbsp;been&nbsp;through the whole&nbsp;thing&nbsp;so they know what it takes to get there and they’re able to communicate that and they do that. You know we’ve got a bunch of guys that were&nbsp;there,&nbsp;and they understand the trials and things&nbsp;(and)&nbsp;the energy that it takes to get there. I’m aware of all that. I get to see it every day and then I get to see them go out there – as some&nbsp;of&nbsp;you guys did – you got to see them go out there and compete&nbsp;(during mandatory mini-camp)&nbsp;and I’m having to slow them down because of the rules which is a good thing.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;they want to challenge each other to go fast and&nbsp;all that so&nbsp;sometimes&nbsp;you’ve&nbsp;got to pump the breaks&nbsp;there&nbsp;a little bit.”Q:&nbsp;Have you seen the trailer for the Netflix series that PatrickMahomes&nbsp;is featured in?&nbsp;With that crew around last year, what was that like?&nbsp;Will you watch it?REID:&nbsp;“I don’t know if I’ll watch&nbsp;it,&nbsp;but he handled himself right. So, it didn’t affect&nbsp;anybody&nbsp;and those guys&nbsp;(the film crew)&nbsp;did a nice job of kind of staying away. Everything was distant or our own people&nbsp;working&nbsp;through our own people&nbsp;here&nbsp;and&nbsp;so it wasn’t a distraction. Some of those things can be a distraction, this wasn’t a distraction. Whatever turns up, turns up,&nbsp;but he handled it the right way.”Q:&nbsp;It looked like you found a&nbsp;lot&nbsp;of&nbsp;work for Wanya Morris during this camp. Q&A with Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas junior designated hitter Janson Reeder was named to the 2023 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Central Region Second Team.

Reeder was already selected to the All-Big 12 First Team as a designated hitter last month. The junior transfer from Cowley Community College made his transition to Division I this season and led the Jayhawks with a .558 slugging percentage.

“Janson had a great year and is well deserving of this honor,” Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “He’s an incredible worker and outstanding teammate. We are very thankful that he’s a Jayhawk!”

Reeder also tied for the most doubles (16) and triples (2) on the team, while being second in home runs (12), total bases (111) and OPS (.929) and third in RBIs (45) and stolen bases (6). Reeder recorded 16 multi-hit games and had 12 multi-RBI contests this season. He posted a .614 slugging percentage in Big 12 play this season.

Reeder is the 25th Kansas player in program history to receive ABCA All-Region honors and the first since 2018.

The teams are voted on by members of ABCA and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America Committee.

Reeder Selected to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Second Team

LAWRENCE, Kan. –Kansas Head Coach Brandon Schneider has announced two new assistant coaches for the women’s basketball program with the promotion of Brock McGinnis and hiring of Marqu’es Webb.

McGinnis and Webb join Morgan Paige and Karyla Middlebrook as assistants under Schneider, who led Kansas to a 25-11 record and the 2023 WNIT Championship last season. The Jayhawks are coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and KU has reached the postseason in each of the past two seasons. Kansas returns four starters from 2022-23, including All-Big 12 First Team selections Taiyanna Jackson and Zakiyah Franklin. "Brock has been a tremendous asset to our program and has contributed significantly to the progress we've made in his time here," said Schneider. "He has a terrific basketball mind and is a proven relationship builder. Brock will work with our post players and will continue to be heavily involved in game planning and scouting of opponents. We are excited to have him on the court as an assistant coach and on the road as a recruiter and talent evaluator." &nbsp;

McGinnis has been on staff at KU for four seasons, serving as the Director of Player Development since 2019. He has assisted as Kansas reached the postseason in each of the past two seasons, including winning the 2023 WNIT Championship. The Jayhawks finished 25-11 in 2022-23, marking the sixth time in program history that KU won at least 25 games in a season, and the first time since 1996-97.

Kansas was led by one of the most improved players in the country last season as Taiyanna Jackson became the first Jayhawk in more than 40 years to average a double-double. She was named a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team and the Big 12 All-Defensive Team after breaking the single-season school record in blocked shots for the second-straight season.

The Jayhawks have now won at least 20 games in consecutive seasons after going 21-10 in 2021-22, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013. The 21 victories marked a win increase of 14 from 2020-21, which is the largest single-season win improvement in program history.

“First off, I want to thank Brandon for the opportunity to continue working alongside him in an elevated role with Kansas Women’s Basketball,” McGinnis said. “My next thank you goes out to my wife, Megan for her continued support in this basketball journey. Marqu'es will assist in the skill development of our front line and play a major role in our recruiting efforts. She will also coordinate opponent scouting." &nbsp;

Webb comes to Lawrence after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Mercer. In her first season, Webb helped Mercer to a 23-7 record and the 2022 Southern Conference Championship. The Bears won the regular season and tournament crowns, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in school history. Webb worked primarily with the Bears’ post players and coached nine players who earned All-SoCon honors, including two Defensive Players of the Year.

Prior to Mercer, Webb spent two seasons on staff at her alma mater Vanderbilt, working as an assistant coach during the 2020-21 season after serving as the director of player development the year prior. She returned to Vandy after playing two years professionally overseas in the Czech Republic for BK Zabiny Brno.

As a student-athlete Webb played in 119 games for Vanderbilt from 2013-17, making 80 starts. She scored 875 points and pulled down 703 rebounds in her career and was a member of an NCAA Tournament team as a freshman. Webb was elected to the SEC’s Women’s Basketball Leadership Council chair and was named the team’s Passion Player of the Year as a senior.

McGinnis and Webb join Morgan Paige and Karyla Middlebrook as assistants under Schneider, who led Kansas to a 25-11 record and the 2023 WNIT Championship last season. The Jayhawks are coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and KU has reached the postseason in each of the past two seasons. Kansas returns four starters from 2022-23, including All-Big 12 First Team selections Taiyanna Jackson and Zakiyah Franklin. "Brock has been a tremendous asset to our program and has contributed significantly to the progress we've made in his time here," said Schneider. "He has a terrific basketball mind and is a proven relationship builder. Brock will work with our post players and will continue to be heavily involved in game planning and scouting of opponents. We are excited to have him on the court as an assistant coach and on the road as a recruiter and talent evaluator." &nbsp;McGinnis has been on staff at KU for four seasons, serving as the Director of Player Development since 2019. KU: Schneider announces coaching staff additions

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—&nbsp;The Kansas City Royals &nbsp;announced the continuation of its partnership with Tico Sports to produce Spanish-language broadcasts for 14 games in 2023, beginning with today’s&nbsp;1:10 p.m. CT&nbsp;game vs. the Angels.

The Salina Liberty battled but ultimately fell short in Champions Bowl VIII at the hands of the Omaha Beef, who capped off their undefeated season with a 50-30 win at the Slaughterhouse.

Omaha wasted no time jumping on the Liberty early, collecting a rogue point on the opening kickoff, before picking off Ed Crouch twice to bookend a touchdown on the ground and take an early 8-0 lead.

As the Beef looked to extend their advantage Salina forced a fumble that rolled into the end zone, and got on the board with a made field goal in the closing minutes of the first.

From there, the two teams traded punches, and the Liberty even found a lead thanks to a 32-yard hookup from Crouch to Anthony Love, but the Beef battled back and took a 17-12 lead into the intermission.

Out of the break, Omaha once again delivered a haymaker in the form of a kickoff return for a touchdown, but Salina bounced right back as Tracy Brooks took a handoff to the outside and ran 40 yards to the house to cut the deficit back to six.

After trading another set of scores, Omaha trotted out their kicker who hit a colossal 43-yard field goal to give the Beef a two-possession lead going into the fourth.

With their backs to the wall, Salina set out to trim the deficit once more, but a third interception by the Omaha secondary and a subsequent touchdown would put the game out of reach as the Beef went on to win 50-30.

Two of those crucial interceptions belonged to league leader Dreko Statham, who closed out his campaign with 15 picks in just 12 games.

With this, the book closes on yet another bittersweet Liberty campaign, that saw Salina rack up nine more wins and make a fourth-consecutive Champions Bowl, but fail to secure a second title.

The university announced the resignation Saturday night. It came a month after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-homophobic-slur-west-virginia-xavier-77ce70b41112a0062421ad9405558473">university suspended him for three games</a>&nbsp;for using an anti-gay slur while also denigrating Catholics during a radio interview.

The 69-year-old Huggins leaves as the third-winningest coach all-time in Division I with 935 career victories, behind only Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1,202) and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse (1,015), both of whom are retired. Unlike the others, Huggins had no national titles, taking Cincinnati to the Final Four in 1992 and West Virginia in 2010.

Huggins had 16-year stints each with the Bearcats and Mountaineers. Both ended in the aftermath of arrests for drinking and driving.

Huggins was charged with driving under the influence on Friday night after his SUV had stopped in the middle of traffic in Pittsburgh with a shredded tire and the driver’s side door was open at about 8:30 p.m. According to a criminal complaint, a breath test determined Huggins’ blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.

Huggins was charged with driving under the influence, released from custody and will appear at a later date for a preliminary hearing, according to a police report.

On behalf of West Virginia University, we share our appreciation for his service to our University, our community and our state."No replacement was immediately named for Huggins. Born in Morgantown, he said it “will always be my home, and I will always be a Mountaineer. Thank you to everyone who has supported our program over the years. It has meant more to me and my family than you could ever know.”Friday night, officers directed Huggins to move off the road so they could help with the tire, then activated their lights when they observed Huggins having trouble maneuvering the SUV to allow vehicles to pass. Upon questioning, officers suspected he was intoxicated and asked him to exit the vehicle. The report said he failed standard field sobriety tests, was taken into custody without incident and transported for further testing.It was Huggins’ second such arrest. The other occurred in 2004, when he was the head coach at Cincinnati.In June 2004, Huggins pleaded no contest to driving under the influence in a suburb of Cincinnati and was ordered to attend a three-day intervention program. The University of Cincinnati suspended him indefinitely with pay and told Huggins to rehabilitate himself.Huggins was allowed to return to work two months later, saying that “I made a terrible mistake, and what bothers me most is I hurt other people. All I can do is work like crazy to be a better person, a better coach, be better at everything I do and make those people proud of me.”By 2005, Huggins' Cincinnati career was over; he was fired amid a power struggle with the school’s president as well as the aftermath of the 2004 arrest.After spending one season at Kansas State, Huggins took his dream job at West Virginia, his alma mater, in 2007.Last month, Huggins agreed to a three-game suspension, a $1 million salary reduction and sensitivity training for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-homophobic-slur-west-virginia-665dd3d31760b1c6f66d7d706e825727">using the slur</a>&nbsp;during an interview with Cincinnati radio station WLW. Huggins was asked about the transfer portal and whether he had a chance of landing a player at West Virginia from Xavier, a Jesuit school.“Catholics don’t do that,” Huggins said. “I tell you what, any school that can throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn’t do it, by God they can get away with anything.“It was the Crosstown Shootout. What it was, was all those (expletive), those Catholic (expletive), I think.”In a joint statement later that week, Gee and Baker said the university “made it explicitly clear to Coach Huggins that any incidents of similar derogatory and offensive language will result in immediate termination.”Huggins’ salary of $4.15 million had been reduced by $1 million after the slur. That reduction was to be used to directly support WVU’s LGBTQ+ Center, as well as a mental health center at the university and other groups that support marginalized communities. At the time, he was suspended for the first three games of the 2023-24 season. In addition, his contract was amended from a multiyear agreement to a year-by-year agreement that began on May 10.Huggins entered the Basketball Hall of Fame last September. In 41 seasons, his teams have gone to 25 NCAA Tournaments, finished ranked in the top 10 of The Associated Press poll seven times and finished under .500 five times. The Mountaineers have 11 NCAA Tournament appearances under Huggins.Huggins had assembled a solid group from the transfer portal for next season, including Syracuse center Jesse Edwards, Arizona guard Kerr Kriisa, Manhattan guards Jose Perez and Omar Silverio, and Montana State guard RaeQuan Battle.“Man..
