Q: How do you explain the struggles of Kadarius Toney in the game on Thursday?

REID: “You know what I would probably take the blame on that – when I said that after the game, I meant that. Listen, he missed all of training camp from honestly the first punt return pre practice on through, so he literally had no training camp until just the last few days when he got back here – and we measured that, we didn’t give him a lot. With that, I thought him getting in the game was important. To be fair, I’ve got to look in the mirror on that one. I probably didn’t put him in the best position there because he doesn’t drop the ball, that’s just not his deal. He’s a very secure catcher. I think that the only way we’re going to get him back is playing him. I think this week will be different than the last week. But I thought it was important that he got in the game, got caught up on the speed, but I probably put him in bad positions – primary position there especially later in the game – he’s still getting his legs back and all that.”

Q: Are there things you need to do with Kadarius Toney to get him back on track?

REID: “Listen he’s had some time here now to keep working, which I think will benefit him. Getting in that game I thought was an important thing – I mean that part was important, putting him in the positions I did, I probably shouldn’t have done that. I think you’ll see better as we go down the road here from him.”

Q: Is the goal to have a couple top receivers separate as the main guys or just have everyone rotate through?

REID: “We’ve got the three guys that have been here and then ended up doing probably the best in the game. And then we’ve got three younger guys we’ve got to bring along, and then you’ve got (Richie) James

who has been in a form of this and then is really tied into the special teams too. I think those three younger guys whether it’s four (Rashee Rice), eight (Justyn Ross), 19 (Kadarius Toney), they’re all kind of new in this and learning in games. As much as we think Kadarius is a seasoned veteran, he hasn’t really played a lot. I think you’ll see growth from them as we go. We’ll just see how that continues to work. Eventually you’d love them all to be where we want them, and then if they separate, they separate, however that works, works. I can’t predict that part.”

Q: How did you analyze the overall wide receiver performances?

REID: “I think the route part was good, I just think that we got – for the most part there were a couple that we got to work on. You guys that asked me about the crossing route, we kind of goofed that up, but we can fix that part. We’ve all got to do better, that’s the thing I took out of this. Whether its coaching, whether it’s playing, whether it’s the O-line, D-line. We can all take something out of this game and get better at it. I didn’t think all the way around. There were spurts of good, and then there were spurts of not so good. And then we were right in the position to go win the game and normally we do that. We didn’t do that, but normally we take advantage of those situations and defense had a big play on the batted ball and then we had a couple – we had a holding penalty; we had a drop there down the stretch that would have put us right in position to finish it off. I’ve told you guys this before and I tell the team this all the time and I tell myself this all the time, there’s a small margin between winning and losing in this thing but you have to take care of business when you put yourself through four quarters and a position to go get it then you take care of business and finish it.”

Q: During the game, how did the connection between you and Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy feel?

REID: “Yeah, we had great communication, I mean, that’s how we go about it. It was just as if EB (former Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy) were there. It’s the same type of communication that we had during the game. I thought that part was relatively smooth. I didn’t have a problem with the way that went.”

Q: Do you feel like you have to talk to Kadarius Toney to get a better understanding of where he’s at and what went wrong?

REID: "Normally the player knows probably better than anybody. I have talked to him a couple different times; we just need to keep going through the process here. You’ve got to keep playing and the more he plays – that’s just not his thing. He’s not a guy that drops balls. He’s got great hands. We just have to keep working through it.”

Q: Last night Kadarius Toney posted some things about the Giants, how do you deal with social media controversy?

REID: "Yeah, to be honest with you I didn’t know that. You’re saying recently I presume. I didn’t know that. If it is a problem, then I will obviously talk to the person about it.”

Q: Jawaan Taylor has a quick first step. How does a tackle develop that as far as getting on the quarterback’s cadence and being able to get that first quick step on the outside?

REID: “Yeah, so, he works on that hard, he gets pretty close at times and sometimes too fast. We just got – we have to make sure it’s not too fast because then that hurts the team. He takes a lot of pride in that and works very hard at that. Try to make sure that he gets off well and you know you watch the rest of

the games this weekend, that’s what these defensive ends, the way they can roll that helps you get into position a tick quicker – but you don’t want to be offsides that’s for sure.”

Q: What do you tell the tackles about where they can line up?

REID: “Normally, you’re able to split the center’s hip there. The guys – you don’t want it to be a tell when you’re running or passing, you also have the officials there, they will normally help you out with that if you are too deep. They’ll give you a warning and you go with it. They do a good job with that, I think. The guys are trying to get every advantage they can. This has been a life – since the passing game has come into fruition, that’s been one of the things tackles do. I mean, that’s been around for a long time and then you just have to make sure that you don’t take advantage of it and get yourself either too deep or leave off the snap too quick.”

Q: How did you feel about the run and blocking in this first game do you think it’s something that can get better week to week?

REID: “We can always do better, and we need to, we need to do better there. So, we’ll get that taken care of. That’s a good group up front there, so we have to clean up some things too.”

Q: It seems like companies kept asking you to be in commercials. What was it like shooting another one with Patrick Mahomes?

REID: “They did. Listen I’m sticking to my day job. I’m not an actor for sure. It was something in the offseason that I did, and the reason I kind of did it was for (Patrick) Pat (Mahomes), and they asked us to do another one so I did it, but I know I’m not very good at it so I’m going to keep my day job here (laughter).”

Q: How did you feel about Rashee Rice’s performance regarding creating space on his touchdown catch?

REID: “He did a nice job. Both him and Blake (Bell) did nice jobs on theirs, kind of feeling the area. And that’s one of Rashee’s strengths, and we could use them a little bit more in those types – different situations where space is important. We’re trying to bring these guys along as we go, and I thought he sure did a nice job right there.

K-State’s Big 12 Opener Set for Primetime Kick

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;After throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for two more in Kansas State’s 42-13 victory over Troy, quarterback&nbsp;Will Howard&nbsp;has been named to the Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 List for Week 2, the award’s committee announced Monday.

It is the first time in his career Howard has earned the weekly honor from the award that recognizes the top quarterback in college football.

Howard threw for 250 yards on 21-of-32 aim against the Trojans and threw touchdown passes to three different receivers. Perhaps his biggest touchdown of the game was a 39-yard strike to&nbsp;Phillip Brooks&nbsp;with 10 seconds left before halftime to give K-State a 21-10 lead. Howard has now thrown a touchdown pass in seven-straight regular season games, the longest streak by a Wildcat since Josh Freeman over the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

A native of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Howard enters play this week tied for first in the nation in points responsible for (27.0 points per game), seventh in scoring (12.0 points per game) and 11th&nbsp;in rushing touchdowns (3). MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Nine home games at Bramlage Coliseum, including marquee matchups with 3-time NCAA champion Villanova in the Big 12/BIG EAST Battle and regional rival Nebraska, highlight the non-conference schedule for second-year head coach&nbsp;Jerome Tang&nbsp;and his Kansas State men’s basketball program.

In addition to its nine home games, K-State will host in-state foe Wichita State in the Wildcat Classic at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Thursday, Dec. 21.

As previously announced, K-State will open its 120th season of men’s basketball on Monday, Nov. 6 against USC at T-Mobile Arena in the Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas. It will be just the 10th season opener away from home since 1970, including the first since 2002.

The home opener at Bramlage Coliseum will occur on Friday, Nov. 10, as the Wildcats play host to first-time opponent Bellarmine. The lone exhibition game will be played against Emporia State on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

In all, the Wildcats will play 18 home games in 2023-24, including a 9-game Big 12 schedule with visits from Baylor, BYU, UCF, Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU and West Virginia. Dates and times as well as the television schedule for those games will be released at a later date.

As previously announced, K-State will also play in the third annual Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship, which is set for Friday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 19 in Nassau, The Bahamas and includes a field of 2023 Final Four participant Miami, Georgia and Providence. Aside from the neutral site games with USC and the Baha Mar Hoops Championship, the Wildcats will play a true road game at LSU, which will be the first-ever visit to the Pete Maravich Center in Baton Rouge. It will be the first of a two-game series between the schools with the Tigers coming to Bramlage Coliseum in 2024-25.

The expanded Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship will run Tuesday-Saturday, March 12-16 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City and will coincide with the women’s championship, which runs Thursday-Tuesday, March 7-12, also at T-Mobile.

K-State will open the 2023-24 season against USC in the 2023 Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas on Monday, Nov. 6 in a quadruple-header at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The matchup between the Wildcats and Trojans will be the nightcap of the event following the women’s game between defending NCAA champion LSU and Colorado. The day will start with a matchup between the Georgia/Oregon men and the Ohio State/USC women.

The game with the Trojans will mark the first time in more than 20 seasons that K-State will open the season away from home since a 73-64 loss to BYU at the Paradise Jam on Nov. 23, 2002, in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. K-State has made several visits to Las Vegas in recent years, including the 2006 Las Vegas Holiday Classic and the 2008 and 2017 Las Vegas Invitationals held at the Orleans Arena. This will be the school’s first game in T-Mobile Arena.

K-State is 4-1 all-time against USC, including an 80-67 win in the last meeting with the Trojans in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. This will be the second meeting in Las Vegas after a 68-55 win by the Wildcats at the 2006 Las Vegas Holiday Classic on Dec. 22, 2006.

Matchups with Villanova, Nebraska Highlight Home Schedule

The 9-game home schedule is highlighted by visits from 3-time NCAA champion Villanova as part of the fifth edition of the Big 12/BIG EAST Battle as well as former conference rival Nebraska.

It will be just the second meeting all-time meeting with Villanova and the first in more than 80 years since the BIG EAST Wildcats earned a 51-34 win on Dec. 27, 1940, in Philadelphia. The Cornhuskers, who have played games in Manhattan dating back to 1906, will make their first visit to Bramlage Coliseum since 2011.

The home schedule tips off with consecutive games with Bellarmine (Nov. 10) and South Dakota State (Nov. 13) before visits from Central Arkansas (Nov. 22), Oral Roberts (Nov. 28) and North Alabama (Dec. 2). It will be the first-ever meetings with Bellarmine and North Alabama.

The Wildcats will host Chicago State on Tuesday, Jan. 2 before opening Big 12 play on Saturday, Jan. 6.

The Wildcats and Friars will tip off at 5 p.m., CT on Friday, Nov. 17, following a matchup between the Hurricanes and Bulldogs at 2:30 p.m., CT. The winners of the first-round games will play in the championship game at 1:30 p.m., CT on Sunday, Nov. 19, while the consolation game will tip at 11 a.m., CT.

In-state rivalry meet in Kansas City

K-State will return to Kansas City for the 12th Wildcat Classic game on Thursday, Dec. 21, at the T-Mobile Center by hosting in-state rival Wichita State. The Wildcats are 9-2 all-time in the game, posting a 71-56 victory over Nebraska on Dec. 17, 2022, in the first contest since 2019.

The game will be the second in a 3-game series between the rivals after the Wildcats earned their fourth straight win in the series with a 55-50 victory at home on Dec. 3, 2022. It will be the first meeting between the schools in a location other than Manhattan or Wichita.

Senior&nbsp;Nae’Qwan Tomlin, who declared for the NBA Draft before opting to return for his senior season, headlines six returners, including three starters, for K-State in 2023-24.

The 6-foot-8, 195-pound forward from Harlem, N.Y., was third in scoring (10.4 ppg.) and double-digit scoring games (21) behind All-Americans&nbsp;Markquis Nowell&nbsp;and&nbsp;Keyontae Johnson&nbsp;and second in rebounding (5.9 rpg.) to Johnson, while he led the way in blocks (1.0 bpg.) and dunks (43).

Tomlin will be joined by fellow regular starters – senior&nbsp;David N’Guessan&nbsp;and junior&nbsp;Cam Carter&nbsp;– along with sophomores&nbsp;Jerrell Colbert&nbsp;and&nbsp;Dorian Finister&nbsp;and redshirt freshman&nbsp;Taj Manning&nbsp;as returners.

Carter, along with Tomlin, was among four players to start all 36 games a year ago, as he ranked fourth on the team in 3-point field goals (35), assists (1.4 apg.) and steals (0.9 spg.) and fifth in scoring (6.5 ppg.), field goals made (86) and minutes (26.3 mpg.). N’Guessan started 11 of the first 12 games before an injury sidelined him for 6 games at the start of Big 12 play. He returned to play the last 16 games, including 7 starts, highlighted by an 11-point performance in the win over Michigan State. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Fresh off a 2-0 start to the 2023 season, Kansas football will make its first road trip of the season to Nevada on Saturday to take on the Wolfpack at Mackay Stadium in Reno. Kickoff is slated for 9:30 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network.

The matchup between the Jayhawks and the Wolfpack will be the first in the series history, and it will be Kansas’ first road trip to the Pacific time zone since Sept. 7, 2002 (at UNLV). The Jayhawks are 13-4-1 all-time against current members of the Mountain West Conference.

Kansas enters its matchup with Nevada with a 2-0 record for the second-straight season and first time since 2008-09. The Jayhawks are coming off a 34-23 victory over Illinois on Sept. 8, in which Kansas put up 539 yards of total offense including 262 yards on the ground. Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels made his season debut completing 21-of-29 for 277 yards and two touchdowns, while junior running back Devin Neal rushed for 120 yards on just 10 carries for a touchdown.

Nevada is in its second year under head coach Ken Wilson and has fallen to 0-2 to start the 2023 season following losses to Idaho (33-6, Sept. 9) and USC (66-14, Sept. 2). Nevada has lost 12 straight games entering Saturday night’s game with Kansas.

Through two games in 2023, the Kansas offense has been as advertised, averaging 530 yards per game, while converting 63% (15-of-24) of third downs. The Jayhawks have scored on 100% (11-of-11) of its trips to the red zone entering Saturday.

Defensively, Kansas has held opponents to 20 points per game, while reaching the quarterback seven times through two games. Against Illinois, Kansas recorded six sacks, the most by a Jayhawk team in a single game since 2009. The Jayhawks have also forced four interceptions through two games, including two by senior cornerback Kwinton Lassiter, which is the most in the Big 12 Conference and the sixth most nationally.

Following Saturday night’s matchup with Nevada, the Jayhawks will return home to host BYU for the Cougars’ first game as a member of the Big 12 Conference. The game will be the second in the series history as the two teams last met in the Aloha Bowl in Honolulu, Hawai’i on Dec. 25, 1992. The Jayhawks came out victorious in that game, winning 23-20.

Nevada has lost 12 straight games entering Saturday night’s game with Kansas.Through two games in 2023, the Kansas offense has been as advertised, averaging 530 yards per game, while converting 63% (15-of-24) of third downs. The Jayhawks have scored on 100% (11-of-11) of its trips to the red zone entering Saturday.Defensively, Kansas has held opponents to 20 points per game, while reaching the quarterback seven times through two games. Against Illinois, Kansas recorded six sacks, the most by a Jayhawk team in a single game since 2009. The Jayhawks have also forced four interceptions through two games, including two by senior cornerback Kwinton Lassiter, which is the most in the Big 12 Conference and the sixth most nationally.Following Saturday night’s matchup with Nevada, the Jayhawks will return home to host BYU for the Cougars’ first game as a member of the Big 12 Conference. The game will be the second in the series history as the two teams last met in the Aloha Bowl in Honolulu, Hawai’i on Dec. 25, 1992. The Jayhawks came out victorious in that game, winning 23-20.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—&nbsp;Major League Baseball announced last week that&nbsp;Salvador Perez&nbsp;was named the Royals 2023 nominee for the&nbsp;Roberto Clemente&nbsp;Award presented by Capital One, baseball’s most prestigious individual honor for Major Leaguers. Perez will be recognized for his local nomination for the Roberto Clemente Award during pregame before the Royals host the Houston Astros on Friday, Sept. 15 at Kauffman Stadium.

“Everybody knows I love to play baseball, but I love to help people just as much,” Perez said. “This isn’t why any of us do it, but being connected with Roberto Clemente is humbling, and I hope that continuing to honor his legacy inspires others to help as well.”

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One is the annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

The annual program allows each MLB Club to nominate one player to be considered for the league-wide Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.

“Salvy became the fourth Captain in Royals history this year, and it wasn’t just for his talents and leadership in the clubhouse,” Royals Executive Vice President – General Manager&nbsp;J.J. Perez was a charter sponsor of the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy with a donation of $1 million, and has personally mentored and coached underserved youth in Kansas City. He has also partnered with Braden’s Hope for Childhood Cancer, among many other charitable efforts in and around his adopted hometown.

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– On the strength of 539 yards of total offense and an electric performance from junior quarterback Jalen Daniels, the Kansas Jayhawks defeated Illinois, 34-23 at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

A crowd of 45,809 saw Kanas don all-black uniforms and improve to 2-0 for the second-consecutive season, while Illinois fell to 1-1.

Daniels, the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, engineered Kansas scoring drives on two of its first three possessions of the game and later concluded the first half with a four-play 75-yard touchdown drive in 36 seconds. Appearing in his first game of the season, Daniels was 21-for-29 passing for 280 yards and two touchdowns and he rushed for 41 yards on 11 carries.

For the second straight game, KU posted more than 500 yards total offense outgaining Illinois 542 to 341. In its opener, KU had 521 yards total offense against Missouri State on Sept. 1. Kansas has now gone over 500 yards of total offense in nine games under head coach Lance Leipold.

Kansas amassed 262 yards rushing with junior Devin Neal leading the way with 120 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown, while redshirt-junior Daniel Hishaw Jr. posted a career-high 100 yards and one score. The Jayhawk duo is the first to rush for 100+ yards in the same game since 2019 (at Boston College; Khalil Herbert, Pooka Williams Jr.).

Defensively, Kansas recorded six sacks with junior Jereme Robinson and redshirt-sophomore Austin Booker recording two each.&nbsp;

Following an Illinois punt, the Jayhawks marched 82 yards in 11 plays with Daniels going 5-for-6 through the air, including a four-yard touchdown pass to redshirt junior Torry Locklin.

Illinois’ second punt of the quarter occurred on its second possession, then Daniels once again led KU to a touchdown putting the Jayhawks up 14-0. Daniels connected with junior tight end Jared Casey for a five-yard TD pass to cap off the drive. Daniels would finish the first quarter 8-for-11 for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

Kansas went up 21-0 toward the end of the second quarter after an 11-play, 94-yard methodical touchdown drive that consumed 6:41 off the clock. Neal went the final five yards rushing for the score.

Illinois bounced back to cut the lead to 21-7 with 41 seconds prior to the half but the time remaining was more than enough for Daniels to orchestrate a 36-second touchdown drive in four plays that covered 75 yards and culminated in a Hishaw one-yard rush to put the home team up 28-7 at halftime. On the second play of the drive Daniels found junior Luke Grimm on a 48-yard completion down the right sideline. Grimm would end the contest with three catches for 69 yards.

Neal opened the third quarter rushing 43 yards up the middle that would later set up a redshirt-senior Seth Keller 41-yard field goal to make the score 31-7. Keller would add a 30-yard field goal with 3:46 to play in the third quarter to make the score 34-7. KU would go 34-yards in seven plays highlighted by Daniels completion to Lawrence Arnold for a 19-yard reception setting up the Keller field goal.

Illinois would not go away scoring 16 unanswered points to make the score 34-23 with 8:08 to play. With 3:33 remaining, the Illini would later mount a drive to the Illinois 48 when KU redshirt-junior Kwinton Lassiter intercepted a Luke Altmeyer pass that ended the Illinois threat and securing the KU win.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;No. 15 Kansas State erupted with a late first-half score and then clamped down on Troy in the second half, as the Wildcats snapped the Trojans’ 12-game winning streak with a 42-13 victory and continued an impressive stretch of 40-point performances in front of a sellout crowd at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

K-State led just 14-10 when Will Howard drove the Wildcats 66 yards on five plays and hit sixth-year senior wide receiver Phillip Brooks with a 39-yard touchdown strike with 10 seconds left in the first half for a 21-10 halftime lead. Then the Wildcats held the Trojans to four consecutive three-and-outs to start the second half to turn a sleeper into a blowout.

“We needed that game,” K-State head coach Chris Klieman said. “We had a lot of adversity, especially in the first half, and we kind of rose above it. The momentum flipped a little bit. Great job by (offensive coordinator) Coach (Collin) Klein and our offense getting the touchdown before halftime.

“We talk about a four-over-four mentality, which is the last four minutes of the first half and the first four of the second half. That was critical for us to get that score. We need to continue to get better and clean some things up, but that’s a quality opponent we beat.”

Troy entered with the second-longest winning streak in the FBS and left Manhattan with its biggest blowout defeat since a 37-point loss against Appalachian State on November 28, 2020.

K-State has scored 40 points in four straight regular-season games for the first time since the middle of the 2002 season.

Howard completed 21-of-32 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns and one interception, and he added two rushing touchdowns for the Wildcats, 2-0, who have allowed just one touchdown in their first two games.

“It wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but I think we needed this,” Howard said. “This is a game where we learned a lot. This was a really, really good team. Troy won 12 straight and they had one of the tougher defenses I’ve gone against. Those dudes were hitting and heated us up pretty well. That was a really good game for us to learn from.”

Troy quarterback Gunnar Watson threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chris Lewis to make it 14-10, but that’s as close as the Trojans, 1-1, could get as the Wildcats stymied star running back Kimani Vidal and made multiple defensive stops coming out of the locker room.

K-State outscored Troy, 21-3, over the final two quarters.

“Something we emphasized a lot this offseason is called the four-over-fours, so those four minutes before halftime and four minutes after is a real critical part of the game,” K-State linebacker Austin Moore said. “That’s something we talked about at halftime. It was huge for us.”

While Vidal finished with 83 rushing yards on 17 attempts one week after darting for a school-record 248 rushing yards in his opener, K-State went to Brooks, who had seven catches for 94 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another score on a jet sweep.

“The first one was a walk-in touchdown and the second one, somebody had to make a play,” Brooks said. “We were struggling on offense. It’s crazy because I just put my head down to work and looked up and saw the results. I’m just making a play. That’s my mindset.”

Brooks led a skill-position group that enjoyed solid performances as Jadon Jackson caught a nine-yard touchdown early in the first quarter and running back Treshaun Ward took a shovel pass into the end zone for a 35-13 lead with 8 minutes, 48 seconds left in the game.

K-State outgained Troy 397-286 in total offense and held the Trojans to just 6-of-17 on third downs while the Wildcats racked up four quarterback sacks, including two by defensive end Khalid Duke. It was Duke’s third-down sack late in the first half that enabled the Wildcats to regain possession and drive for the score just before halftime.

K-State surrendered just 98 total yards in the second half.

“All of us are dogs on the field,” Duke said. “Everybody is getting to the ball, and everybody is one unit and communicating and dominant. We just dominate every single down, not letting any offense get momentum and drive the ball down the field, and just playing as a team. When you see us together celebrating as a team, that’s the Mob.

K-State won the coin toss, took the ball, and drove 71 yards in eight plays, starting with the pass and mixing in the run. Howard found Brooks twice, Ward showcased his elusiveness with a 20-yard run, and Howard capped the drive by hitting Jackson, who was running right to left, in the middle of the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown.

The Wildcats outgained Troy 147-40 in the first quarter and wasted little time reaching the end zone early in the second quarter. Facing second-and-goal at the 2-yard line, Howard handed off to Brooks on a jet sweep and the wide receiver caught a block from Ben Sinnott before running past the right pylon for a 14-0 lead.

Moments later, K-State’s defense stepped up when Brendan Mott applied pressure and Will Lee III intercepted a pass intended for Deshon Stoudemire and returned the ball 11 yards to K-State 46. However, Howard threw an interception in the end zone and the Trojans amassed a 14-play, 73-yard drive capped by a 24-yard field goal to get on the scoreboard for the first time.

“I know (Howard) was kicking himself for the one pick that he threw into the end zone, probably getting a little bit greedy potentially, but he really settled in after that and said, ‘I made a mistake, I’ve got to own it, and I’ve got to come back really well,’” Klieman said. “He settled in and played really well.”

After K-State was unable to move the ball, confident Troy came back with a 75-yard drive that ended when 6-foot-3 Chris Lewis caught a 21-yard touchdown over Lee to trim K-State’s lead to 14-10.

However, K-State, in the face of adversity during an underwhelming quarter of football, finished on a high note.

Howard expertly drove down the field with 49 seconds left until halftime. He rushed for 15 yards, then Brooks hauled-in a pass on a crossing route at the 24-yard line, and he raced past a block from Jackson for a 39-yard score to put K-State ahead, 21-10, with 10 seconds left in opening half.

“There were a lot of opportunities we had,” Howard said. “We didn’t capitalize on a couple opportunities. We learned a lot from this going into a big week next week.”

It wasn’t until the final play of the third quarter that Vidal popped off a long run when he weaved inside the defense for 46 yards to the K-State 23-yard line. However, K-State’s defense stiffened, and the Trojans settled for a 37-yard field goal.

“We gave them one big run, but other than that, we did an awfully good job in the rush game,” Klieman said. “We work hard on our run game, and we’re hitting our fits and hitting them physically and pushing the pile back.”

It all goes back to the four-over-four philosophy.

“Our run defense, we’re pretty elite,” cornerback Jacob Parrish said. “We had the four-over-four. We did a good job with that.”

Then the Wildcats held the Trojans to four consecutive three-and-outs to start the second half to turn a sleeper into a blowout.“We needed that game,” K-State head coach Chris Klieman said. “We had a lot of adversity, especially in the first half, and we kind of rose above it. The momentum flipped a little bit. Great job by (offensive coordinator) Coach (Collin) Klein and our offense getting the touchdown before halftime.“We talk about a four-over-four mentality, which is the last four minutes of the first half and the first four of the second half. That was critical for us to get that score. It was huge for us.”While Vidal finished with 83 rushing yards on 17 attempts one week after darting for a school-record 248 rushing yards in his opener, K-State went to Brooks, who had seven catches for 94 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another score on a jet sweep.“The first one was a walk-in touchdown and the second one, somebody had to make a play,” Brooks said. “We were struggling on offense. It’s crazy because I just put my head down to work and looked up and saw the results. I’m just making a play. That’s my mindset.”Brooks led a skill-position group that enjoyed solid performances as Jadon Jackson caught a nine-yard touchdown early in the first quarter and running back Treshaun Ward took a shovel pass into the end zone for a 35-13 lead with 8 minutes, 48 seconds left in the game.K-State outgained Troy 397-286 in total offense and held the Trojans to just 6-of-17 on third downs while the Wildcats racked up four quarterback sacks, including two by defensive end Khalid Duke. WINFIELD - It was not difficult for Kansas Wesleyan coach&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/f2697231-3180-4bc4-95e9-d46e8fc107a7?elinkdata=434" target="_blank">Matt Myers</a>&nbsp;to find a positive takeaway from the Coyotes' 24-3 Kansas Conference loss to Southwestern Saturday night.

Dented for 24 points in the first half the defense emerged from the locker room at halftime with a different mindset and attitude. It showed on the field as KWU shut out the Moundbuilders' juggernaut offense in the final 30 minutes.

Just how good was the defense in the second half? Southwestern (3-0) had 198 total yards at halftime, 108 passing and 90 rushing, but totaled just 85 yards in the second half, 53 rushing and 32 passing. They entered the game averaging 36.5 points per game.

"Early we weren't doing anything wrong except not running through tackles," Myers said. "That's just an intensity thing. We were getting to the back right around the line of scrimmage and we just weren't tackling. They had to go do it and they did."

Cornerback&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/39ce8f16-8cec-484c-a738-8527d11ce156?elinkdata=434" target="_blank">Jordan Dupre</a>&nbsp;intercepted a Moundbuilders' pass on the first play of the fourth quarter and&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/757b6adb-cece-468d-887e-e8b155b0ad5e?elinkdata=434" target="_blank">Quatama Massaquoi</a>&nbsp;blocked a short field goal attempt later in the period.

"We've got to find our running game offensively, we need to be able to run the ball. I thought we did a better job throwing the RPOs (Run Pass Option) and doing that stuff."

KWU (1-2) plays Friends at 6 p.m. next Saturday at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex. 

The Falcons (3-0) defeated Avila 54-20 Saturday in Wichita.

"This group right now is waiting for something to click so we just need to look in the mirror and go fix it," Myers said.

KWU Football falls to No. 11 Southwestern 24-3

McPHERSON - Four different Kansas Wesleyan Women's Soccer players scored goals as the Coyotes picked up a 4-0 win over the Central Christian Tigers on Saturday.

The Coyotes got one on the board early in the sixth minute from&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/da11c8e9-00d3-410e-a6da-9f39b6aea2e0?elinkdata=404" target="_blank">Leoni Enzlmuller</a>&nbsp;thanks to an assist from&nbsp;<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/a22f4d95-5af5-4359-bbe8-a60eb0313dad?elinkdata=404" target="_blank">Sara Wall</a>.

Moreno-Rojas scored Wesleyan's lone second half tally in the 78th&nbsp;minute.

KWU Women's Soccer gets 4-0 win over Central Christian

In an effort to avoid issues with continued excessive heat in Saturday's weather forecast, the kickoff time of Saturday's game between Kansas Wesleyan and Southwestern College in Winfield has been changed.

The game will now kick-off at 7:30 p.m. at Jantz Stadium. The Kansas Wesleyan broadcast of the game will be available locally on 910KINA AM/107.5 FM, and here on Salina Post.

The pregame will begin at 6:30 p.m. with Tyler Henry on the call.
