Bill Fekas and the Family Christmas Dinner that occurs annually in Salina. This tradition has been ongoing for the past 40 years, and this year the Fekas family will continue their wonderful service of free dinners for the community on Christmas Day.

Since 1982, Bill Fekas along with many volunteers have kept the ongoing tradition of serving free community meals in Salina on Christmas Day.

Every year, Fekas and many others prep, cook and provide filling meals for those in the public, free of charge. The "Fekas Family Christmas Dinner" not only has a nice hook to it, but is held annually at the 4-H Building (Bob Flaherty Dr.) starting at 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Bill Fekas said his team starts the whole process of serving thousands of meals, all day on Christmas Eve. The anticipation is always that there will be more than a 4,000 people that will receive meals.

Last year, there was approximately 5,000 people who received meals.

"I think there will be alot of people this year, especially after the Government shutdown," said Fekas.

Before Fekas started the Family Christmas Dinner, he served meals at the Salina Country Club. One day, he entertained the vision of giving needy people free meals on Christmas Day.

“I grew up in Athens Greece. We were very poor and needed help sometimes,” stated Fekas. “After I came to this country, I decided I was going to do something good for somebody one day.”

Fekas pitched the idea to local philanthropist, <a href="https://www.kshof.org/team/s.-dean-evans">Dean Evans</a>&nbsp;to seek assistance on starting up and the rest was history. In the first dinner, there were about 50 people who attended the dinner.

Since then, the family Christmas dinner has grown well past the 5,000 mark of people who either attend or receive meals.

"We give the people whatever they want and I thank God I am apart of it," said Fekas. "God is with us all the time."

In 2014, Fekas was presented with the "Hero of the Week" award from&nbsp; Bank VI (now Bank of the Plains) for orchestrating the Christmas Dinner.

Salina Sees You: Bill Fekas, Family Christmas Dinner

Amanda Otto (CEO) &amp; the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina team. Otto explains the heart and passion she and the BBBS team have when mentoring, encouraging and serving the local youth. Otto has been the CEO since 2019, and BBBS has continued to impact the local youth in various ways since she has been apart of the team.

Amanda Otto has had great mentors in her life before she became the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina (BBBS). 

She grew up in Salina and before her employment at BBBS, she worked in the private sector/entrepreneurial world with her father. After her time working at her family’s business, she decided to apply for the CEO position for BBBS. 

Ever since she came on board, she stated it has been one of the most “rewarding parts of her life.”

“I knew what Big Brothers Big Sisters was and what the mission was. I have had mentors in my life and I understood the importance of mentorship, which has impacted me and I have seen the impact it's had on others,” she said. “Getting into the role was just one of the most rewarding things that I have done thus far. What really impacted me, was to see the program impact, meeting the families, see the kids wanting a big, see the matches and hear their stories. Still to this day, that is what drives me.”

Otto does not anyone to “complicate” the meaning of mentorship. 

She stated that mentorship is about “consistency” and just simply being there for the child.

Growth of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina

“I never in a million years would have believed that I would be able to do something that I love so much for a job, which also benefits our community. I think I have one of the best jobs in Salina,” said Otto.

Before COVID-19, BBBS was serving over 300 hundred children with a staff of 3, plus Otto. Once the pandemic occurred, the organization was forced to take a step back and re-evaluate the actions that needed to take place.

The BBBS mission is “in-person mentoring” and the pandemic put a hold on their service. 

Otto said BBBS of America allowed electronic communication for the other local chapters to do across the country. 

With this option, bigs and littles were able to stay connected virtually, despite the lockdown. On top of that, BBBS of Salina applied and used grant funding to provide services for the families who may not have the resources and tools to connect virtually.

She stated their numbers of the big to little ratio and events is getting back to what it was pre-COVID.

Moreover, programs have grown and been added since then. 

Those programs include, “Beyond School Walls” and day mentoring to name a few. On top of the growth and addition of the programs, BBBS has also collaborated with a numerous amount of local nonprofits as well.

Now, BBBS has 10 people on staff, including Otto. 

She said the staff loves what they do and are passionate in providing the services for the community.

“Our staff loves what they do. You don’t work at Big Brother Big Sisters if you don’t love what you do, and those are the people we recruit to be on our staff,” said Otto.

BBBS of Salina is currently looking to expand by acquiring a bigger building.

“I want to leave my community better than when I found it to be,” Otto said.

“We would not be here without the support of the people and the businesses here,” said Otto.

BBBS of Salina has received outstanding support ranging from monetary and in-kind donations, to volunteerism, board members and local participation in games and events. 

As the organization grows as a whole, the need for support will grow as well.

Otto said they are in consistent communication with their supporters to fill the need of support.

“No gift is too small and even time is essential for us,” said Otto.

Otto had her mentor figures in her life, as she thanked her father, grandfather and people from her workplace who have taught her many valuable life lessons. 

With this, she was able to understand that she cannot do anything worthwhile alone.

“You don’t get to where you are, or where you end up alone,” she said.

Otto’s desire and passion stems from the teachings and precepts her mentors gave her. She stated about being purposeful in every decision and personal interaction on a daily basis, which was a lesson she took from her mentors.

Previous littles are now giving back to society by serving as a Big in the BBBS initiative, due to how the mentorship programs changed their lives for the better.

“That is happening and it is alive and well in Salina, as well as our country through Big Brothers Big Sisters in the mentorship programs. The more kids we can impact, the more we are going to start seeing that multiply tenfold.”

Otto hopes to get rid of the stigma for people to stop thinking they are “not doing enough, or not doing anything in making a difference.” 

She said this stems from over-complicating the process in the growth of a child, since we put our focus on the big things, rather than the small moments that create the bigger impact.

“When we look at the kids that are being mentored, they may not notice or realize the impact that was happening in their lives, until years down the road. These kids are going to pick a path, whether it be positive or negative. As these kids get older, they are going to realize that their mentor was one of the biggest reasons they stayed in school, did not choose that risky behavior, did not choose the path of violence and able to break generational poverty, because the mentor taught them they are worthy enough to contribute, get an education and to have a very successful career. Our kids today have the potential to do all of that. It's in every one of us. We sometimes just need that person to walk alongside us, believe in us and let us know we can do whatever we set our minds to doing, and that is what a mentorship is all about.”

Furthermore, she said it's her hope that once the littles realize the impact they received, to give back and change the lives of others in their respective communities.

She also stated she has seen how resilient the kids are in this generation, and adding that little extra push from their mentor is biggest difference maker.

“Our future generation is going to bring so much good to this world. The resiliency is in them, but what does that resiliency look like when they have someone cheering them on?"

There have been many cases and stories in the past where children's lives have been saved from suicidal ideations, after being a little through the BBBS programs.&nbsp;

Salina Sees You: Big Brothers Big Sisters team

Ellie Riekhof (Soprano),&nbsp;Mac Sheforgen (Tenor), Madison Berndt (Soprano),&nbsp;Wyatt Angell (Tenor) and Marcos Lira (Bass) who will be performing at the historic Carnegie Hall in February 2026.&nbsp;

Legend says, a pedestrian on 57th Street sees a musician getting out of a cab and asks, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” Without pause, the artist replies wearily, “Practice.”&nbsp;

These five students have done exactly that.

Each of them share their thoughts, along with their music teacher of how they accomplished a once-and-a-lifetime dream to perform at the Big Apple, alongside musicians from across the world.

This is the first time a total of five students from Salina Central are heading to Carnegie Hall, which breaks the record of students from Central who have gone on this trip in the past.

All said they are super excited to head to New York, with a few of them being their first time ever to the Big Apple.

These students will be performing at the big stage where names such as Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, The Beatles and Jay-Z to name a few have performed there.

“I don't think it has even hit us yet, that we are going to New York and it is just unreal at this point," said Angell.

“It is nice to know that I am going to be up there with the best of the best, said Lira.

“I never thought I would get the opportunity, but here we are going to New York!” said Berndt

As part of the process of getting selected to perform at Carnegie Hall, the students took songs they have previously prepared and recorded it again before sending it to the <a href="https://theinternationalchoir.com/">International Choir</a>.

Additionally, the students added their accomplishments and a selection of musical pieces they have performed before they were selected to perform at the historical venue.

Before the students met the requirements, their music teacher Ryan Holmquist nominated the students he thought could have a good chance of being selected.

Holmquist stated this is most amount of students he has taught who are going to Carnegie Hall.

“It makes my job pretty easy, to work with students who really excel at what they do and they are pretty self-motivated," Holmquist said. "This is very special group of students.”

Around one student in 2019 and a couple of students, post COVID-19 pandemic have performed at Carnegie Hall under Holmquist. Holmquist is in his 21st year of teaching and 18 years being apart of the music department at Central.

The students stated what they are looking forward to the most about performing at Carnegie Hall.

“I am excited to see how that stage feels, because we all have never performed in front of crowd of that magnitude," said Lira.

“I mostly wonder how it will sound in there and I can’t wait to see all the lights and everything that is apart of the venue," said Berndt.

“I am sure once we get there it’s going to fully hit us that we are here, it’s pretty surreal," said&nbsp;Sheforgen.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, "a threefold cord is not quickly broken" in the context of when people work together, it creates a great reward.

The friendship of these students go way back to their middle school days. They have grown up and worked together in music for awhile. The students gave their comments on how it will feel going to the big stage with each other.

“I am excited to go with this group, I have been friends with them for a long time," said&nbsp;Sheforgen.&nbsp;

“Auditioning with this group, definitely made me more confident in myself, because constantly each and every one of us have just always lifted ourselves up," said Lira.

“It all contributes to a really special relationship we have with each other. It is going to be amazing and I can’t wait to spend this time with them," said Berndt.

The students will meet all the members of the International Choir and rehearse with a world-renowned conductor. They will then perform the concert in front of thousands towards the end of the first week of February 2026.

Riekhof is currently committed to play softball at St. Olaf College, and plans to be apart of the choir at St. Olaf. She also plans to pursue a music education and vocal education career as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sheforgen plans to attend college and study journalism. He is considering being apart of theatre and/or choir as well.

Berndt is committed to Kansas State University and plans to be apart of their choir program. She also plans to obtain a degree in media.

Angell plans on attending law school, but is considering being apart of a church choir when he gets older.

Lira plans to attend Bethany College to study being a History or English teacher, but will also consider choir and theatre as well.

 </figure>By: NICOLAS FIERROSalina PostThis is the first time a total of five students from Salina Central are heading to Carnegie Hall, which breaks the record of students from Central who have gone on this trip in the past.All said they are super excited to head to New York, with a few of them being their first time ever to the Big Apple.These students will be performing at the big stage where names such as Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, The Beatles and Jay-Z to name a few have performed there.“I don't think it has even hit us yet, that we are going to New York and it is just unreal at this point," said Angell.“It is nice to know that I am going to be up there with the best of the best, said Lira.“I never thought I would get the opportunity, but here we are going to New York!” said BerndtAs part of the process of getting selected to perform at Carnegie Hall, the students took songs they have previously prepared and recorded it again before sending it to the <a href="https://theinternationalchoir.com/">International Choir</a>.Additionally, the students added their accomplishments and a selection of musical pieces they have performed before they were selected to perform at the historical venue.Before the students met the requirements, their music teacher Ryan Holmquist nominated the students he thought could have a good chance of being selected.Holmquist stated this is most amount of students he has taught who are going to Carnegie Hall.“It makes my job pretty easy, to work with students who really excel at what they do and they are pretty self-motivated," Holmquist said. "This is very special group of students.”Around one student in 2019 and a couple of students, post COVID-19 pandemic have performed at Carnegie Hall under Holmquist. Holmquist is in his 21st year of teaching and 18 years being apart of the music department at Central.The students stated what they are looking forward to the most about performing at Carnegie Hall.“I am excited to see how that stage feels, because we all have never performed in front of crowd of that magnitude," said Lira.“I mostly wonder how it will sound in there and I can’t wait to see all the lights and everything that is apart of the venue," said Berndt.“I am sure once we get there it’s going to fully hit us that we are here, it’s pretty surreal," said&nbsp;Sheforgen.---<h2>SPONSORED</h2><figure>

Salina Sees You: Five Salina Central seniors to perform at historic Carnegie Hall

The African Children's Choir, comprising of over 15 children from Africa will be coming to perform at Salina churches this end of November. The children's lives benefit tremendously from being apart of the choir and Salina is being encouraged to support.

The African Children’s Choir is a program part of the <a href="https://africanchildrenschoir.com/programs/">Music for Life</a> organization, which provides education, leadership training and life skills to children who are in need throughout Africa.&nbsp;

This month, the choir is set to perform at three churches in Salina as part of their 9-month tour across the US.&nbsp;The choir consists of 17 children, ages 8-11 all from different backgrounds throughout Africa.

It has been 4 decades since the inauguration of the choir, meant to transform lives through the power of music, education and hope. Throughout their tour they have been going to more than 100 cities across the country. The choir is known to captivate audiences with their heartwarming performances, bringing traditional hymns and African cultural songs, while sharing stories of God’s faithfulness through joyful worship.

Ray Barnett, founded the choir back in 1984 when he was on a humanitarian trip to war-torn Uganda, when he gave a small boy a ride from his decimated home to the safety of another village. During the journey, the child sang and that simple song of dignity and hope, became the catalyst for a program that has changed the lives of thousands of children.

“When I went back to Canada and people were not very interested in Uganda, I remembered this small boy,” Barnett said. “I knew that if only a group of these beautiful children could go to the West, people would be deeply moved and would certainly want to help.”

Each child in the choir has faced significant hardships, often with limited access to education. Through the choir, these children gain life changing opportunities for education and personal growth, becoming beacons of hope for their community

Daniel Tamale, is currently the Ugandan Tour leader for the choir. He was a former African Children's Choir member and is now volunteering his time back to the organization.

"I have never expected to be a tour leader, not that I did not believe in myself, but it's such a responsibility that calls on maturity and at the same time an open mind to learn and grow, so I am grateful for the opportunity," said Tamale on being a tour leader. "The children are having a great time and they are learning so many things."

The children in the choir, is the first time they have been in the US throughout the tour. Since September, the choir has been on tour and will end next year in May.

“When they first got to the airport back in Uganda, many of these children have never been on a plane," said Tamale. "Them coming to the US, they are seeing tall buildings, being in nice cars, nice homes... So just the experience of doing things for the first time has been mind-blowing for them and they are grateful."

Given Tamale's experience of participating in the choir and now volunteering as the tour leader, he stated he "speaks into the children's lives, letting them know anything is possible."&nbsp;

He added they use Biblical principles in helping the children grow and mature in their lives.

"It's the only way you can train up a child," said Tamale. "The Bible says, train up a child in the way they should go; even when they are old and they will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). In our mentorship and discipleship, we use the Bible. These children have dreams, and they can be who they want to be in the future. We are training people who are going to become of substance and bring value in their communities, with an education."

“The African Children’s Choir proves just how powerful music can be,” said Choir Manager, Tina Sipp. “These concerts not only provide hope and encouragement to our audiences, but they offer the children life-changing experiences that help shape them into future leaders.”

Throughout the tour, Tamale shared feedback and comments from people who have watched the choir perform at their churches across the US.

"People come to us and say, how are you able to be on stage with so much joy and yet, you are coming from such hardships? So, they get to learn it's not just about having everything that gives you the joy and happiness, it's the peace of mind that comes with gratitude and appreciation for the little that you have," said Tamale. "Many people come and say, if only our children could understand how blessed they are and how much they have. They will also say, they have been touched, they have learned from our culture, but above all they having understood that joy and happiness is not just about materialistic things."

Ever since the inauguration of the choir, over 59,000 children have benefitted from being apart of the African Children's Choir. Those children range from Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Rwanda.

“At the end of the day, all the credit goes to God and of course we are forever grateful for everyone that pitches in, with whatever kind of support they give, because God does use people," stated Tamale.

Local families host the children in their homes, where they are able to share and learn about new customs, food and culture. 

There is no charge for admission, and their concerts are free and open to the public.

All proceeds go towards the different Music for Life programs, the children's medical care, discipleship training, and above all their education.

🎥 Salina Sees You: African Children's Choir set to perform in Salina 

The community of Salina and their outstanding support of serving those in need, amid the Federal Government shutdown.

Throughout the Federal Government shutdown, which has temporarily halted services and resources for those in need, the community of Salina has stepped up to provide the necessities for those who are and have suffered amid the shutdown.

Various nonprofits such as the <a href="https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/ks/salina/n-santa-fe-corps/">Salvation Army of Salina</a>, <a href="https://www.unitedwaysalina.org/">Salina Area United Way</a>, <a href="https://www.kansasimpactcoalition.com/">Kansas Impact Coalition</a>, <a href="https://salinarescuemission.com/">Salina Rescue Mission</a>, to name a few and even <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/9fdacdce-e200-46e0-9796-660bc2ca6e78">employees of Saline County</a>, have rallied together and stepped up to provide for those in need.

“At The Salvation Army, we believe no one should face hardship alone," said Lt. Luke Hursh,&nbsp; Corps Officer/Administrator of The Salvation Army of Salina. "During this government shutdown, we’ve seen an increase in need, and our mission remains the same — to serve without discrimination and meet both physical and spiritual needs. Our community dinners are one way we can ensure families don’t have to choose between paying a bill and having a warm meal. We’re here to be a steady hand of hope in uncertain times.

The Salvation Army has been providing their "community dinners" as a way to help in this time of need. During this time, the Salvation Army is serving their dinners free of charge&nbsp;Monday through Friday from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm at 1137 N. Santa Fe Ave.&nbsp;

The meal program provides hot, nutritious dinners for anyone in need and absolutely no paperwork or qualifications are required.

“We know that when programs like SNAP are delayed or uncertain, it puts even more pressure on families already struggling to make ends meet,” said Lt. Hursh. “Our dinner program ensures that no one in Salina has to go without a meal, regardless of their situation.”

On top of the Salvation Army serving their free community dinners, the thrift store is an avenue that helps the less fortunate.&nbsp;

The store offers affordable clothing, small furniture, household items and more—helping families save on essentials while supporting community programs.

“When you shop or donate at our thrift store, you’re not just finding a good deal—you’re helping someone else in Salina put food on the table,” said Lt. Hursh, “Every purchase makes a difference.”

The Kansas Impact Coalition (KIC), in partnership with the&nbsp;<a href="https://smokyhillequalitycoalition.com/">Smoky Hill Equality Coalition</a>, has recently launched a 24-hour accessible fridge and freezer donation and food-pick up station at two locations across Salina.

This initiative called&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/d6c6228e-f18e-48b7-a1a6-d39278ed386c">Salina Fridge &amp; Freezer</a>, started back on Tuesday, October 28 for the purpose of mitigating food insecurity across the Salina/Saline County area.

“As SNAP benefits are cut and harmful (political) choices make it harder for families to afford groceries, what was already a food desert in Salina has now become an emergency,” said Miranda Bachman, President of KIC. “Our neighbors deserve access to healthy food, day and night — and we refuse to wait for policy to catch up to the need.”

The locations for the 24-hour fridge and freezer are currently set at&nbsp;Bravo’s Sliders &amp; Bites (1400 East Iron Avenue),&nbsp;Salina Seventh-Day Adventist Church (834 N. Eleventh St.), Aubrey Jayne at American Family Insurance (1013 Albert Ave) and St John's Missionary Baptist Church (215 S. Chicago St.).

KIC has stated this fridge and freezer as a&nbsp;dignity-first model:

Take what you need. Give what you can.

- Other refrigerated food, drinks and goods

- Non perishable goods (leave on top of fridge and freezer)

According to Bachman, The Temple (336 S. Santa Fe) has women hygiene products and small baby items donation spot near their front entrance. Moreover, Megan Rico an affiliate of KIC is starting a Formula drive, distributing throughout the community.

"We are working with Blessing Boxes to be set up and going to be putting up structures for winter," said Bachman. We are asking help from the community when they can stock fridges, which are available 24/7 or you can sign up to sponsor a fridge. Host sites are not responsible for stocking the fridges."

KIC is actively seeking additional partners, host sites and donated refrigerators/freezers to expand access across Salina.

"United is the Way" is the slogan Salina Area United Way (SAUW) lives by.&nbsp;

On top of the resources SAUW provides, the organization has recently announced a community food and resource fair that will be occurring at the Tony's Pizza Events Center (TPEC) on&nbsp;Monday, November 17&nbsp;from&nbsp;4:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

This event,&nbsp;SNAP Back Against Hunger&nbsp;is a call to action for the Salina community to come together and support families who are now facing increased food insecurity due to the disruption in federal assistance.

<a href="https://www.unitedforalice.org/introducing-ALICE/Kansas">Asset&nbsp;Limited,&nbsp;Income&nbsp;Constrained,&nbsp;Employed (ALICE)</a>,&nbsp;represents the growing number of families who are unable to afford the basic needs of housing, child care, food, transportation, health care and technology.

According to an ALICE report in Saline County provided by SAUW,&nbsp;38% of households in Saline County are either living in poverty or earning less than what’s needed to cover basic living expenses.

“So many families in Saline County rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table,” said Christina Small, Executive Director of Salina Area United Way. “With the government shutdown halting this critical support, many are left without the resources they depend on. This event is about coming together as a community to ensure no one goes hungry.”

Early Childcare Initiative Director, Michelle Groopman stated this event is very important in giving back to those who are in need throughout the community.&nbsp;

"In general, this is going to be really important to give back to the community - to let them know we are here for them and just to hopefully give them a grain of hope," Groopman said.

This event happening at TPEC is a community-wide event, which will feature about or have over 20 organizations. These organizations in attendance (consisting of food, financial and family resources), will communicate and show others how their organization can provide the resources each person at the event needs.

Small commented how important it is for organizations and people in the community to rally together during these times.

"In these times of emergency needs, this is when it's really important for the community to pull and work together," she said. "We do not look at this shutdown as politics. Right now, we all need to put politics aside and look at your neighbors. These are the people you see and interact with everyday. We are not just a nonprofit organization, we are catalyst, a convener and connector. Our mission is to strengthen north central Kansas by uniting people and resources, to build thriving resilient communities."

"I have lived in several different states, and this is the first town I have ever lived in where I have really seen people rally together to meet this need," said Groopman.

Donations are welcome, which will help SAWU to purchase more food items and all other dollars will be allocated towards their <a href="https://www.unitedwaysalina.org/EmergencyReliefFund">Emergency Relief Fund</a>, as well as being stored in case the shutdown lasts longer.&nbsp;

The Salina Rescue Mission's feeding program, is the only program in the area that serves&nbsp;3 meals a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year.

Executive Pastor of the Salina Rescue Mission, Chad Young is calling on the community for your support in helping them upkeep the service of meals throughout the shutdown.

“When families lose SNAP, they often turn to us as their next line of support,” said Young. “We are preparing to serve more meals than ever, but we cannot do it alone. This year we have served over 70,000 meals thanks to the community’s support. With SNAP looking like it is going to be put on hold for an unknown length of time, it calls our community to help those that will be filling the gap.”

The Mission currently serves 95 men&nbsp;that are being assisted to regain stability and work towards self-sufficiency, according to Young.

On top of their service to men 18 years and up, the Mission also provides&nbsp;showers for both unsheltered men and women along with clean clothes.

Food drives are projected to occur, which include Project Salina and the Dr. Temple Food Drive&nbsp;(coming up Friday, November 21 - Saturday, November 22 at all three Dillon’s locations)&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

1:00 pm to 6:00 pm (Friday, November 21).

10:00 am to 3:00 pm (Saturday, November 22).

“Those who are on fixed incomes that are disabled and/or elderly are the most vulnerable,” said Young. “We have a great caring community and some great agencies like the Emergency Aid Foodbank, programs like Meals on Wheels, and others. It takes us all doing our part to help meet this huge need.”

Tonya Moran-Diaz and Rebecca Nichols, two Saline County employees stepped up to provide&nbsp;a hygiene drive in the wake of the shutdown.

"We are two ordinary women who recognized an important need within our community," said Nichols. "We have heard and seen all of the worries of losing SNAP and we felt we needed to do our part to help the community."

This drive will occur until&nbsp;Sunday, November 30&nbsp;at various drop-off locations throughout the Saline County/Salina area:

- City-County building&nbsp;(300 W. Ash Street) Room 209

- Ad Astra&nbsp;Books &amp; Coffee House&nbsp;(135 N. Santa Fe)

- Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank&nbsp;(255 S. Chicago)&nbsp;

- Eagle Communications&nbsp;(1825 S. Ohio)

- Saline County Sheriff's Office&nbsp;(800 E. Pacific Ave)&nbsp;

Once all donations are collected, items will be distributed to the KIC and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salinafood.org/">Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank</a>.&nbsp;

Items collected for the drive include:

"With the ongoing government shutdown and the potential loss of SNAP benefits for many families in November, countless individuals may soon face a difficult decision at the grocery store, choosing between essential cleaning products or food," added Moran-Diaz. "We believe no one should have to make that choice. Everyone deserves access to both nourishment and hygiene. As we move deeper into cold, flu, and COVID season, maintaining good hygiene is one of the most effective ways to help reduce the spread of illness. Both the Salina Food Bank and the Kansas Impact Coalition actively distribute hygiene and personal care items, turning community donations into tangible care for those in need. Unfortunately, these essential items are among the least donated and will be taken off the grocery list because food is more important."

The Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank offers scheduled hours for distribution, and the Kansas Impact Coalition provides support by appointment for individuals unable to visit the Food Bank.

"Every contribution, no matter how small helps ensure that members of our community can meet their basic needs with dignity and health," said Moran-Diaz.

We’re here to be a steady hand of hope in uncertain times.The Salvation Army has been providing their "community dinners" as a way to help in this time of need. During this time, the Salvation Army is serving their dinners free of charge&nbsp;Monday through Friday from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm at 1137 N. Salina Sees You: Community of Salina, serving those in need amid Federal Gov. shutdown

Dr. Marilee McBoyle-Wiesner, a Dickinson County trailblazing surgeon, who tells her story about defying the odds on becoming Kansas' first female board-certified general surgeon.

Dr. Marilee’s McBoyle-Wiesner’s fascinating journey started in 1959 when she underwent tonsillectomy surgery at age 7, performed by a woman, Dr. Ruth Montgomery-Short, which was uncommon at the time.&nbsp;

“She would tell me about three daughters she had at home and I was 7, but I remember thinking I have never known a lady like this, she takes tonsils out during the day and she goes to her daughters at home at night,” she said. “That made an impression on me.”

A couple years later, she read a book “Elizabeth Blackwell: The First Woman Doctor” which impressed her as well.

“I read that, and oh my the hardships she went through and the discrimination, I mean it was big league and I remember being so impressed by her on how she pressed on,” she said.

At the time, McBoyle-Wiesner then told her mother she wanted become a doctor.

Born and raised on a farm 10 - 11 miles south of Abilene, Marilee commended and appreciated her parents for their unconditional love and support they expressed to her when she was pursuing her medical career.

“As I got older, I appreciated them in ways that I did not when I was younger,” she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Both her parents were successful in their ways, as they graduated from the University of Kansas. Her father receiving a political science degree and her mother earning a business degree. However, they both decided to put aside their goals and decided to return back to rural Abilene to help save the McBoyle farm.“I have greater appreciation for them on that, because I was able to fulfill my dream of becoming a doctor,” McBoyle-Wiesner said. “They never tried to push me in any direction, and the goal of going to medical school was mine. For whatever I was going to go into, it was very life affirming.”She attended Kansas State Teachers college, now Emporia State Univeristy from 1970-1974.Marilee started medical school in Kansas City, where she completed 1 1/2 years. She then transferred to Wichita in January 1976, for the last 1 1/2 years of her medical school journey.After graduating in 1977, she attended a 5-year general surgery residency at St. Francis Hospital, which was under the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita (KUSM-Wichita). This is where McBoyle-Wiesner, became the first woman accepted into the surgery residency.After her 5 years there, she then went to the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, NM to do a 1-year fellowship in burn and trauma surgery.&nbsp;Following her time there, McBoyle-Wiesner had the opportunity to return back to Wichita, which she did in the summer of 1983 and became part of the Wichita Surgical Group (now, Wichita Surgical Specialist). Call&nbsp;(785) 823-6391&nbsp;or visit today, to make an appointment.<h2>Never being discouraged</h2>Going back to her medical school days, McBoyle-Wiesner said she thought about going into family medicine.“I though surgery was going to be the worst months of my life,” she said.However, she did not let this discourage her as she became fascinated with patients coming in with a problem and surgeons having a thoughtful process of trying to diagnose the issue.“It was a wonderful sequence of events and little by little, I could not believe that I was starting to have a change in heart from thinking this was going to be worst time in my life, to this is kind of fascinating,” McBoyle-Wiesner said.McBoyle-Wiesner said word went around that there has never been a female surgical resident at St. Francis and “forbid that there would ever be one."“That was just the consensus everywhere you went around the hospital,” she said. “I thought well I have a choice, I can take the hearsay from every other place in the hospital or I can go to the Chairman of the Department myself, and prepare to hear it directly from him.”She then went to speak to the Chairman of the Department and told him how much she loved surgery. The Chair told her they would consider in having her apply to the school and she walked away feeling “euphoric.”&nbsp;“What I would tell anybody, is just because the first interview goes well, don’t expect the same thing in the second,” she said.At the time of the second interview, the Chair of Department gave her a series of questions that she was going against the odds.“They were starting to pepper me with questions. Do you know there has never been anybody that has done this? Do you know how lonely it will be for you? Do you know how you will be looked upon? Do you know that patients won’t want to come to you because you are a female? I mean just one after the other,” she said. “So I sat there, listened and told them, I realize patients may not want to come to me and that is fine, that is their right, but for anybody that might want to come to me, I will give them the best care I know to give.”When she officially started her residency, she did not expect the hospital to change how they operated. For example, Marilee said due to St. Francis never having a female resident, meant they did not have a women’s changing room and no call room for female resident surgeons.“I did not make a big deal about some of those things, because I realize I needed all my energy to try to learn what I needed to learn and I could not go around always having a chip on my shoulder, that something maybe was not fair for me,” she said.Throughout her perseverance, McBoyle-Wiesner said she started to see a change around St. Francis. Overtime, she started seeing the hospital implement a call room for women and a women’s changing room. She added, that now when she goes back to St. Francis, she “smiles inwardly.”“I just smile inwardly, because it was progress that was made,” she said. "I think it served me well to realize, this was new for the hospital, but to not expect them to send out an alert that we have to make big changes because Marilee has arrived. No, I arrived, just adapted and little by little I think they saw things that could&nbsp;be better.”Marilee added that she was treated well throughout her residency years. Toward the end of her residency, the Chairman of the Department admired her work. The Chairman asked if she would work for the hospital, but advised she should go away for a year, so she can get the proper training she needs before she returned.This is where she did her 1-year fellowship at UNM and later became Kansas' first female board-certified general surgeon.She married her husband, Tim Wiesner in 1988 and had three sons Tim Jr., Tom and Thaddeus from 1990-1994.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>McBoyle-Wiesner retired from her surgical practice in 2000 with the Wichita Surgical Group, and started teaching medical students.In October 2023, she was&nbsp;<a href="https://kumc.info/school-of-medicine/campuses/wichita/about/news/news-archive/marilee-mcboyle-m.d.-inducted-into-american-college-of-surgeons-academy-of-master-surgeon-educators%C2%AE.html">inducted as a full member</a>&nbsp;of the American College of Surgeons’ Academy of Master Surgeon Educators®.She retired from teaching at KUSM-Wichita last year in December. The skills lab at KUSM-Wichita officially named their surgical skills lab in her honor.&nbsp;Now retired in Wichita, she still supports future physicians through the Marilee McBoyle Pre-Medical Scholarship and has served on the Emporia State University Alumni Association Board of Directors."I am indebted to the Lord and to so many that have contributed along the way," McBoyle-Wiesner said. "My heart is overflowing with gratitude and for so many that have played a role in my life."<figure>
