State Rep. J.R. Claeys (R-Salina) accepted a position with the Trump Victory campaign as a regional field director, supporting field operations for the president's re-election in swing states in the region.

“I’m looking forward to building grassroots operations in battleground states to lead President Trump to victory in November,” said Claeys. “The president is leading a second economic resurgence, providing an opportunity for every American to succeed.”

Claeys led the team that brought Trump to Kansas in 2018 for a rally at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, according to information provided by Claeys. He also managed the 2018 Wichita visit of Vice President Mike Pence, the information noted.

“President Trump created the greatest economy in the world by getting government out of the way,” said Claeys. “He cut regulations, invested in job creators, and he’ll do it all again.”

Claeys is currently running for the Kansas State Senate in District 24, serving Saline and Dickinson counties, including the cities of Salina and Abilene.

Claeys was first elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 2012. He has served in campaign manager and senior advisor roles in congressional and statewide campaigns in Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina Public Library is pleased to announce that its building will reopen to the public on June 22 with near full service. 

The transition of reopening plans to the Saline County Health Department has allowed the library to reopen without restricting the number of visitors in the building. The library will be open 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Friday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday.

Library staff has been working hard to improve patrons’ experience in the library building while it was closed. The public will notice a new layout. DVDs, movies, CDs and games will be found on the east side of the main floor near the Technology Center, while all books and audiobooks are now together on the west side. Youth Services has cleared unneeded shelving.&nbsp;

“Staff has used this time to reorganize the sections of the library to make it easier to browse for what you want,” Melanie Hedgespeth, library director, said. “As you come back to the building, we hope to greet you with a refreshed experience that helps connect you to new stories and information.”

The library has also continued to provide a host of digital services. Access to e-books, audiobooks and more have been available through the library’s website — <a href="http://salinapubliclibrary.org/" target="_blank">salinapubliclibrary.org</a>. A new online learning option, Creativebug, which features a wide range of arts and crafts instruction, was added last month.

Summer at the Library has been online to encourage readers this summer. A form on the library’s website allows the public to record the number of books they read and enter weekly drawings. As of June 5, 1,452 books have been read.

A few services will be added back at a later date. Public use of phones, magazines, newspapers, in-person programs and meeting room reservations will be temporarily unavailable. Donations of materials are not being accepted, at this time. Other changes related to COVID-19 mitigation will include shields on service desks and staff wearing masks. The library will be following a disinfection routine throughout the day. Furniture and computers will be spread out to offer social distancing. These changes will be reevaluated each week.

“We are hoping to add back in services as the situation allows,” Hedgespeth said. “In the meantime, we will continue to offer free grab-and-go lunches for youth, in partnership with St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church; interactive discussion on Facebook; and, of course, help via webchat and email. We also will start virtual classes and storytimes in July.”

The library’s Pickup Service, which has served up to 120 patrons each weekday, will expand to offer Saturday hours on June 13 and 20. When the building reopens, the service will continue seven days a week from 1-5 p.m. with pick up available near the Checkout Desk.

“We wanted to continue to offer an option for patrons who are not quite ready to spend a lot of time in the building. Some have also found it an extremely convenient way to get library books and movies,” Hedgespeth said.

Patrons are asked not to visit the library if they are feeling ill. Face masks are recommended and frequent use of hand sanitizer and hand washing are encouraged.

Salina Public Library to reopen June 22

A traffic stop late Tuesday night landed a Salina man in jail on multiple requested charges.

An officer conducted the traffic stop on a white Ford Crown Victoria at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of East Republic Avenue after the driver failed to use a turn signal and made two other improper turns, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

When the officer made contact with the driver, Karl Williams, Jr., 29, of Salina, he found that Williams had only a Texas identification card instead of a license, Forrester explained. He also had no proof of insurance, Forrester added.

A K-9 was brought in and indicated the presence of narcotics in the vehicle, he said. A search of the vehicle located the following, Forrester said.

•A Smith and Wesson MP9 9mm handgun that was reported stolen in Salina last month

•Drug paraphernalia with methamphetamine residue

Williams was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

•Criminal possession of a firearm by a felon

•Possession of an opiate, narcotic, or certain stimulant

A Salina man ended up in the emergency room after allegedly not giving an acquaintance a ride.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were called to Salina Regional Health Center at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for the report of a man who allegedly had been struck on the head with a handgun.

The 35-year-old man told officers that he was in his apartment at 2140 East Crawford Street when an acquaintance knocked on the door, Forrester said. The man said he didn't answer the door because he knew the acquaintance would ask for a ride, as he had provided him one before, Forrester explained. The second time the acquaintance knocked, the man answered the door and told the acquaintance that he would not give him a ride, he said.

The acquaintance pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at the man's head. He then struck the man's head with the handgun, causing a laceration, Forrester said. The man fell backward onto the couch and was struck on a knee, he added. The man's brother then came out of his bedroom and left with the acquaintance, Forrester said.

ABILENE -- Dickinson County has reported its first COVID-19 related death.

According to a news release from the Dickinson County Health Department, a 67-year-old man tested positive for COVID-19 following his death.

Persons wishing to pickup food are to enter from the southwest drive way on Kenwood Park Avenue, follow the orange cones along the south side of the parking lot, and drive to the garage door on the south side of Kenwood Hall. 

Those picking up food will need to wear a mask and have photo identification and proof of income. 

The types of food to be distributed are not known at this time. When that information becomes available, it will be put on the commodities phone line: 785-114-0918.

Next commodities distribution in Salina set for June 17

It doesn’t feel like an election year with all that’s gone on in the world these past few months, but in Kansas, primary elections loom in August followed by November’s general contest.

Over the years I’ve voted on Election Day, done in-person advance voting and utilized the mail-in option. Of the three, I’ve found in-person advance to be the fastest and most convenient. Election Day is still my preference, probably because of tradition. All three have positives and negatives, depending on one’s point of view.

There are passionate people who will say anything other than casting a ballot on Election Day is un-American. Others will say it’s absurd to hold an election in the middle of the week. For Kansans, none of the arguments really matter because the system allows ample opportunity and access to the ballot box.

Like everything else voting will be different in 2020. Polls will still open and operate on the first Tuesday in August and November, but it’s likely a record number of Kansans will cast their ballots early and through the mail. I can’t tell you how to vote, but I would urge everyone to be aware of the potential disruptions to traditional voting procedures.

My home county is currently looking for 80 workers to staff polling places for the primary and general elections. I’ll be among those new hires for the primary, receiving a full two hours of training before working a polling location for 12-plus hours. If there’s a slow line in Riley County, there’s a good chance I’m the reason.

If time and your health aren’t concerns, there’s no indication you can’t still vote in person at the traditional time. But if they are, Kansas law makes it easy and convenient to cast a ballot early either in person or by mail.

If you want to vote in person but skip the lines on Election Day, counties offer the opportunity to do so, usually at the courthouse or clerk’s office, starting the Tuesday before Election Day or 20 days before the election.

Check with either your clerk’s office or county election commissioner to see what days and times in-person advance voting is available. If you’re not registered, those same officials can help you with that as well.

To vote by mail, you need to request an advance ballot application from your county election officer. Some counties have already mailed applications to all registered voters. If you submit an application, a ballot will be mailed to you starting 20 days before the election.

Completed ballots can be mailed back, so long as they’re post-marked on or before Election Day and received no later than three days after the election. Voters can also return their advance ballot to the county election office or any polling place in their county by the close of polls on Election Day.

Key dates for the primary are July 14, the last day to register; July 15, the day advance ballots will be mailed and in-person voting may begin; July 28, deadline to apply for an advance mail ballot, Aug. 3 at noon, in-person advance voting ends; and Aug. 4, Election Day.

Those dates for the general are Oct. 13, last day to register; Oct. 14, the day advance ballots will be mailed and in-person voting may begin; Oct. 27, deadline to apply for an advance mail ballot; Nov. 2 at noon, in-person advance voting ends; Nov. 3, Election Day.

I should note I’m against voting for voting’s sake. Our system of self-governance relies on an informed electorate choosing its leaders. Hopefully, you will be part of that electorate this fall, either in person or by mail.

Insight: Ballot measures

MANHATTAN – As an academic, Cheryl Boyer is familiar with the growing body of research that suggests gardening is a boost to the body and mind.

But as a gardener herself, it’s just plain fun.

“Taking on a gardening project,” said Boyer, K-State Research and Extension state leader for horticulture and natural resources, “gives people the opportunity to get outside, work with their hands, and get away from the computer, social media and the news … maybe listen to some music and get out of their heads for a while.”

It’s perhaps too early to know for sure, but the global pandemic seems to have led to an increased interest in gardening across the country.

In Kansas, Boyer and several of her colleagues statewide recently launched an online series called the&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/k-state-garden-hour-webinar-series/k_state_garden_hour.html" target="_blank">K-State Garden Hour</a>, which airs each Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m.

In its first week, the program had more than 400 participants tune in to a talk on planting native flowers in the backyard. Then, in just the second week, nearly 1,000 people registered for a lesson on growing tomatoes.

Boyer said that program was set up to accommodate 500 participants, so the early success has led organizers to re-evaluate for an online session that can host as many as 1,000 people in the future.

“The feedback we have received has been very positive,” Boyer said. “I think people stuck at home right now are finding a lot of value in the educational information we offer through K-State Research and Extension, particularly as it helps them be more successful in the garden and understand our natural world better. It’s been very rewarding to help people find our excellent resources.

“You know, I think people who garden discover the universal joys of working with their hands and seeing the results of their work grow and thrive.”

In the last 10 years, research has supported Americans’ interest in gardening, and the health benefits that come from it.

Beginning in 2011, Texas A&amp;M researchers Charlie Hall and Madeline Dickson published three reviews in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hriresearch.org/journal/journal-environmental-horticulture" target="_blank">Journal of Environmental Horticulture</a>&nbsp;to outline the benefits associated with gardening.

They reported such physiological health benefits as better sleep; lower incidence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and allergies; enhanced immunity; increased physical activity; and positive cognitive development.

In a subsequent review, they reported such social benefits as increased attachment to place and community; reduced community crime; improved access to healthy and affordable food; and improved school performance in children.

Related to mental health, Boyer noted other researchers’ studies in which home gardeners “describe a sense of vitality obtained from being outdoors in natural settings, which gives energy to purposeful action by adults.”

“Combined with better sleep and all the other benefits listed, gardening is a natural stress management technique that contributes to mood boosting,” she said.

Boyer noted that gardening is for anyone, experienced or not. In Kansas, the&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/master-gardeners" target="_blank">Extension Master Gardeners</a>&nbsp;volunteer program is a good in-road to learning, she said.

“I think Extension Master Gardeners is the best example of a program that directly addresses the combination of promoting gardening and mental health benefits,” she said. “Most participants in the program join for the education and social interaction, then later experience all of the other benefits as they grow in their horticultural efforts.”

Having a support group also can help beginning gardeners overcome their fear of early failure, she noted.

“For beginners, find something that speaks to your heart and soul, and put your effort where you can enjoy it on a regular basis,” Boyer said. “For example, we are seeing a resurgence in interest toward house plants, especially with younger folks. There are so many cool plants to try; so, just go for it. If it dies, no biggie. Use your friendly K-State Research and Extension agent to figure out what went wrong and try again.

“There can be a lot to know about plants, but you don’t need to know everything at once. Gardening is an interest that you can enjoy on a surface level as well as a lifelong pursuit of deeper knowledge.”

It’s been very rewarding to help people find our excellent resources.“You know, I think people who garden discover the universal joys of working with their hands and seeing the results of their work grow and thrive.”In the last 10 years, research has supported Americans’ interest in gardening, and the health benefits that come from it.Beginning in 2011, Texas A&amp;M researchers Charlie Hall and Madeline Dickson published three reviews in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hriresearch.org/journal/journal-environmental-horticulture" target="_blank">Journal of Environmental Horticulture</a>&nbsp;to outline the benefits associated with gardening.They reported such physiological health benefits as better sleep; lower incidence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and allergies; enhanced immunity; increased physical activity; and positive cognitive development.In a subsequent review, they reported such social benefits as increased attachment to place and community; reduced community crime; improved access to healthy and affordable food; and improved school performance in children.Related to mental health, Boyer noted other researchers’ studies in which home gardeners “describe a sense of vitality obtained from being outdoors in natural settings, which gives energy to purposeful action by adults.”“Combined with better sleep and all the other benefits listed, gardening is a natural stress management technique that contributes to mood boosting,” she said.Boyer noted that gardening is for anyone, experienced or not. In Kansas, the&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/master-gardeners" target="_blank">Extension Master Gardeners</a>&nbsp;volunteer program is a good in-road to learning, she said.“I think Extension Master Gardeners is the best example of a program that directly addresses the combination of promoting gardening and mental health benefits,” she said. “Most participants in the program join for the education and social interaction, then later experience all of the other benefits as they grow in their horticultural efforts.”Having a support group also can help beginning gardeners overcome their fear of early failure, she noted.“For beginners, find something that speaks to your heart and soul, and put your effort where you can enjoy it on a regular basis,” Boyer said. “For example, we are seeing a resurgence in interest toward house plants, especially with younger folks. There are so many cool plants to try; so, just go for it. If it dies, no biggie. Use your friendly K-State Research and Extension agent to figure out what went wrong and try again.“There can be a lot to know about plants, but you don’t need to know everything at once. Gardening is an interest that you can enjoy on a surface level as well as a lifelong pursuit of deeper knowledge.”

Pavement marking on I-70 in Dickinson County is underway

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Salina has announced a gathering for Wednesday evening.

The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at 901 Beatrice. The group plans to "stand in solidarity with all peoples and to call on our leaders to act on Universal, Uniting Principles to guide our nation and world toward harmony and peaceful dialogue crucial to our very survival," according to information released Tuesday.

The group also released the following statement.

Our country’s leadership should not use faith, the very thing that unites us, to divide us. At the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Salina, not all of us have the same faith traditions. Not all of us have the same beliefs. But we hold common principles. Principles that we believe should be common goals for our people, our community, and our leaders.

We, at the fellowship, call for action and stand in solidarity with the people of Salina, regardless of faith, upbringing, or identity, in order to work toward change based on respect for the people and the planet on which we live.  The seven principles we strive for, and urge our government to strive for, are these:

• 1st Principle: The inherent worth and dignity of every person;

• 2nd Principle: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;

• 3rd Principle: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;

• 4th Principle: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;

• 5th Principle: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;

• 6th Principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;

• 7th Principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

A 2.5 magnitude quake struck southeast of Salina at 12:58 p.m. Sunday. It was centered just a bit southeast of the intersection of South Simpson Road and East Farrelly Road.

On Monday at 8:52 p.m., a 2.1 magnitude quake struck western Dickinson County, just east of Solomon. It was centered just south of Old 40 and east of Camp Road.

MCPHERSON -- Five new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in McPherson County, bringing the total to 38.

Following is information about the cases as released by the McPherson County Health Department.

The first newest positive case is a male under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

The second newest positive case is a female under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

The third newest positive case is a female under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

The fourth newest positive case is a female under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

The fifth newest positive case is a female under 18, currently recovering at home, with known exposure to a positive case.

"The five new cases are household members of a positive case related to a cluster at a private company in McPherson County. Facilitywide testing is taking place to identify any asymptomatic carriers. This private company does not have general public access; therefore, the location will not be released. Staff at this company have been contacted and are aware of the situation. Let this serve as a reminder that COVID-19 is still present in our communities, so please stay home if you are ill and maintain your distance when you are around others," the health department noted.

Of the 38 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in McPherson County, 26 cases have now met recovery guidelines set forth by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and one case remains hospitalized, the health department reported.

Construction is forcing a temporary location change for a CityGo bus stop.

The CityGo stop at Sunset Plaza, serving the Purple and Green routes as a transfer station, is closed temporarily.&nbsp;

The construction of the fuel station in the parking lot of the Sunset Plaza is affecting traffic flow and the ability of CityGo buses to get into and out of the parking lot.

The Purple and Green routes will meet temporarily one block east in the parking lot of the Crawford Street Storage facility, 1025 West Crawford Street, near the Crawford @ R/R tracks stop (Purple 36 and Green 31).

The stop will be closed until further notice.

CityGo announces temporary closing of bus stop

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, there is a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon, some of which could be severe across portions of central and southeast Kansas. 

A better chance for showers and a few thunderstorms will occur across central Kansas this evening and tonight, NWS noted.

NWS: A chance for thunderstorms today, tonight

GYPSUM -- The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating an attempted burglary at a residence in Gypsum and the theft of a wallet from a nearby vehicle.

Late Monday afternoon, Joseph Murdoch, 25, of Gypsum, reported that someone had stolen his wallet from his vehicle that was parked at his residence in the southwest part of Gypsum, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. The vehicle's door was slightly damaged, he said. The wallet contained $130 in cash, Soldan added. 

Additionally, someone had attempted to break into Murdoch's residence, Soldan said.

According to Soldan, a neighbor had called Murdoch around 8 a.m. Monday to tell him that a woman was attempting to climb in his front window, however, she did not gain access to the residence. A damaged window screen was found on the front porch of the residence, Soldan said. Murdoch was home at the time of the attempted break-in, he added. 

Additionally, the neighbor reported seeing a large male with brown hair and a stocky built female leaving the area in a silver four-door Mercury Sable, he said. Both were described as being white and in their 20s, Soldan added.
