Saline County has announce the closing of a portion of Centennial Road beginning Tuesday.

Centennial Road from West Water Well Road to a half mile north will be closed to all traffic beginning Tuesday for road maintenance work.  

Weather permitting, the roadway is anticipated to be opened by the end of the week on Sept. 12. 

 Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations.  Emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the section of closed road at all times.

The Birth Center at Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) has been named one of Kansas’ “Best of the Best in Metabolic and Newborn Screening.” 

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in partnership with the Kansas Hospital Association and the Kansas Midwives Alliance, has created the recognition program for hospitals, facilities and midwives who provide newborn screening services.

The first-ever awards were released by the KDHE’s Kansas Newborn Screening Program (KSNBS), honoring 131 birthing facilities and midwives for their dedication to higher newborn screening standards using data collected in the 2019 calendar year. Salina Regional was one of 12 facilities across the state to receive the “Best of the Best” designation.

Birthing facilities and newborn providers can earn top honors in up to five general categories by meeting or exceeding state goals or performing better than the state average. Facilities earning all recognitions for either point-of-care (hearing and critical congenital heart defects) or metabolic and genetic screenings earn a “Best of the Best” designation.

The KS-NBS Program began in 1965 and currently screens newborns for 32 rare and serious medical conditions. In response to a 2018 recommendation from the KS-NBS Advisory Committee, the program began planning to add four new conditions to Kansas’ newborn screening panel. In&nbsp;preparation, the program updated quality and timeliness expectations. Over the last two years, Salina Regional has worked to train its staff, update protocols and adjust to higher newborn screening standards.

“I am very proud of our Birth Center staff who have dedicated themselves to giving our babies the best chance for optimal health through quality and timely newborn screening,” said Melinda Schmidt, director of Women and Infants Services and Risk Management at SRHC. “It takes incredible diligence on their part to complete these screenings correctly, which in the long run can have a wonderful impact on babies and their families.”

SRHC Birth Center receives 'Best of the Best' designation

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported five additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 214.

Information about the most recent cases, as provided by the health department, follows.

●Positive case No. 210 is a symptomatic female in her 70s with known travel exposure.

●Positive case No. 211 is a symptomatic female in her with known travel exposure.

●Positive case No. 212 is a symptomatic female in her 40s with unknown exposure.

●Positive case No. 213 is a symptomatic female in her 30s with unknown exposure.

●Positive case No. 214 is a male in his 90s with unknown symptoms at this time, has unknown exposure and is hospitalized.

Additionally, the health department updated the county's case data, including the following.

●Hospitalized cases (may not represent current hospitalizations): 15

●Ventilated cases (may not represent current ventilated cases): 4

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 update for Friday.

As the holiday weekend begins, we need our entire community to continue to follow public health messages and make a conscious effort to protect all citizens. Wear masks, limit gatherings, practice social distancing, wash your hands, and stay home when you don’t feel well. The choices and behaviors that each member of our community makes determine the ability to keep schools and businesses open.

There are 19 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County that have been identified since the Wednesday, September 2nd report. The total for the county is now 522, with 124 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department, 389 that have recovered, and a total of 9 deaths. Salina Regional Health Center reports that they have 5 hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

According to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, there are now 45,220 cases and 481 deaths statewide. This information can be found at <a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/">https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/</a>.

●Saline County is pleased to announce that we received word today from the Governor’s Office of Recovery that our reimbursement and direct aid plans for the Round 1 Coronavirus Relief Funding are approved. This will allow us to disburse $11,026,434 to public, private and non-profit organizations in Saline County. While the state did not request any modifications to the County’s plan, the County’s Coronavirus Funding Advisory Committee will meet on Tuesday, September 8 at 2:30 pm, to review the feedback from the Office of Recovery. That meeting can be viewed on the County’s YouTube channel.

●The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will begin releasing active locations of outbreaks published weekly beginning on September 9th. Active locations will be released when there are five or more confirmed cases associated the location. For private businesses, the name of the business will only be released if there are 20 or more cases associated with the location. In Kansas, an outbreak is defined as two or more cases associated with one known exposure. No patient names will be released.

Here is what you can do to help us to stop the spread:

●Wear masks in public spaces as required by City Ordinance and County Resolution

●Maximize physical distance (6 feet or more) in public settings

●Avoid socializing with large groups

●High-risk individuals should only leave the house for essential needs

Saline County: 19 new COVID-19 cases; 389 of 522 recovered

Due to unforeseen circumstances, The Texas Tenors concert scheduled for Sept. 19 has been rescheduled for Dec. 13, 2020, at 7 p.m.

“While we are sad that the original date did not work, we are thrilled that The Texas Tenors were able to reschedule,” said Casey Flinn, Isis Shrine Recorder. “We are looking forward to hearing all of The Texas Tenors songs and some Christmas classics.”

The Texas Tenors' performance in Salina is a fundraiser for Shriners Hospitals for Children and is brought to you by the ISIS Shrine.

All previously purchased tickets are still good for the new date. If someone is unable to make the new date, a refund may be requested at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center Box Office.

The Texas Tenors benefit concert rescheduled for Dec. 13

Police are looking for the person who stole a motorcycle from a downtown parking lot Thursday night.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus reported this morning that sometime between 11:11-11:43 p.m. Thursday, someone stole a black 2000 Suzuki VZ800Y Marauder motorcycle from a parking lot in the 100 block of North Seventh Street. The motorcycle was valued at $5,500, he noted.

According to Hanus, a 37-year-old Salina man told officers that he rode the motorcycle to Big Nose Kate's and parked it in the back parking lot off of North Seventh Street. He returned a short time later and found the motorcycle missing from the south end of the parking lot, Hanus noted.

An officer and the man searched the area and located the victim’s motorcycle a half block to the west in the alley between the 100 block of North Eighth Street and the 100 block of North Seventh Street, Hanus explained. Based upon evidence at the scene, the suspect moved the victim’s motorcycle with the kickstand down, he added. 

The reporting officer is conducting a follow-up in the area to see whether any surveillance video is available, Hanus noted.

Anyone in the vicinity of and during the time of the theft who saw a motorcycle begin pushed is asked to contact the Salina Police Department.

SFD announces promotion of Sprague

ELLSWORTH – An Ellsworth man has been sentenced to more than 40 years in prison for convictions on four child sex-crime related charges, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced today.

Karl Van Nice, 59, yesterday was sentenced by Judge Carey Hipp on two counts of rape, one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of aggravated sexual battery. Van Nice was convicted by jury trial in February. In addition to the prison term, he is subject to lifetime post-release supervision and lifetime sex offender registration.

The crimes were committed between September 2015 and January 2016. The charges stemmed from an investigation by the Ellsworth Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Assistant Attorney General Will Manly of Schmidt’s office prosecuted the case.

Multiple offices, facilities closed on Labor Day

OCCK Transportation has announced the upcoming re-launching of KANcycle, the regional bike sharing program that serves north central Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANcycle has been closed since the end of March because of COVID.&nbsp;&nbsp;The relaunch is planned for Sept. 11.

KANcycle, a program of OCCK Transportation, was started in June of 2019 with 80 bikes spread across 16 stations in eight counties with the following locations:

●Cloud County Community College, Concordia

All locations will still be in existence.&nbsp;&nbsp;Customers will now need to use the Movatic app to access the bikes.&nbsp;

“We are so excited to bring the bikes back online.&nbsp;&nbsp;We know that people across all of the communities have been missing riding the bikes.&nbsp;&nbsp;2020 has been an interesting year for all of us,” said Michelle Griffin, director of mobility management for north-central Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We are looking forward to many years of a great partnership with Movatic and north central Kansas with KANcycle.”

Riders join the program by signing up for annual memberships or pay-as-you-go.&nbsp;&nbsp;Annual memberships will be $30 with trips under 1 hour being free, student annual memberships will be $20 with trips under 1 hour being free, and pay-as-you-go will be $1.50 every 30 minutes.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, the state’s largest health insurer, is making another contribution to provide bikes and marketing support for the second year of the KANcycle program, with the intention of helping the program grow in coming years.

“For over 75 years, we’ve made helping Kansans lead healthier lives one of our top priorities,” said Virginia Barnes, director, Blue Health Initiatives. “Bike share encourages both active living and provides a means for community members to access resources they need to stay healthy. Hutchinson's Apron Strings Kitchen Store is expanding to 143B South Santa Fe Avenue with an anticipated opening on Oct. 1, owner Anne Dowell told Salina Post.

"We are a kitchen store that carries quality cookware, tools and gadgets, and appliances. Our staff is trained to answer cooking questions and help find the appropriate tool for your needs. We are a great store for practical gifts for everyone from the home cook to the trained chef," she said.

"We pride ourselves on quality merchandise at fair prices. We will have an array of brands including Le Creuset, Staub, DeMeyer, Vitamix, Cuisinart, Bosch, Zwilling, Wusthof &amp; Henckel," Dowell added.

The original Apron Strings opened in downtown Hutchinson in 2008. So why expand to Salina?

"I see Salina as a great opportunity in a thriving community. We were able to work with quality developers that made the decision easy for us. We have many great customers that currently drive to Hutch often to shop our store and we want to make it easier for them," Dowell explained.

Additionally, Dowell said that downtown Salina location was a good fit for Apron Strings.

"We like the downtown community vibe. We are a unique store and fit well with other boutiques. Strip malls and big box stores aren’t our thing," she said.

 </figure>By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostA well-known regional kitchen store is coming to downtown Salina!Hutchinson's Apron Strings Kitchen Store is expanding to 143B South Santa Fe Avenue with an anticipated opening on Oct. 1, owner Anne Dowell told Salina Post."We are a kitchen store that carries quality cookware, tools and gadgets, and appliances. Our staff is trained to answer cooking questions and help find the appropriate tool for your needs. We are a great store for practical gifts for everyone from the home cook to the trained chef," she said.<figure>

We will have an array of brands including Le Creuset, Staub, DeMeyer, Vitamix, Cuisinart, Bosch, Zwilling, Wusthof &amp; Henckel," Dowell added.The original Apron Strings opened in downtown Hutchinson in 2008. So why expand to Salina?"I see Salina as a great opportunity in a thriving community. We were able to work with quality developers that made the decision easy for us. We have many great customers that currently drive to Hutch often to shop our store and we want to make it easier for them," Dowell explained.Additionally, Dowell said that downtown Salina location was a good fit for Apron Strings."We like the downtown community vibe. We are a unique store and fit well with other boutiques. Strip malls and big box stores aren’t our thing," she said.Dowell has a strong sense of community.<figure>

We are a privately owned small business and our goal is to develop relationships in the community," she said.Dowell said that with the scheduled grand opening on Oct. 1, there will be grand opening events through Oct. 10.

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department has reported four additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 209.Following is information on the most recent cases, as provided by the health department.●Positive case No. 206 is a symptomatic female in her 30s with unknown exposure.●Positive case No. 207 is a symptomatic female in her 70s with unknown exposure.●Positive case No. 208 is a symptomatic male in his 20s with unknown exposure.●Positive case No. 209 is a symptomatic male in his 50s with unknown exposure.Of the 209 total cases, 187 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines and three of the active cases are hospitalized, the health department noted.
