HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Cosmosphere will host a free screening of the upcoming Netflix documentary Apollo 13: Survival in the Justice Planetarium on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6:00 p.m., thanks to the production company Insight Film.

"Apollo 13: Survival" is a gripping cinematic portrayal of one of NASA's most iconic moments in history.

The film recounts the harrowing experience of three astronauts stranded in space after a catastrophic explosion en route to the Moon rocked their spacecraft in April 1970. The authentic Apollo 13 spacecraft, Odyssey, is the crown jewel of the Cosmosphere’s Hall of Space Museum. Not only is the spacecraft on display at the Cosmosphere, but SpaceWorks, a division of the Cosmosphere, was also the team that restored it.

Cosmosphere to show Netflix Apollo 13 documentary September 5

Rolling Hills Zoo is excited to announce the arrival of JP, a four-year-old male African painted dog who has joined the zoo’s resident female dogs, Lala and Raina. This new addition is part of the zoo’s ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation and education.

JP, who weighs in at 73 pounds, is slightly younger but noticeably larger than his new companions, Lala and Raina, who weigh 62 pounds and 56 pounds respectively. 

"He is quite a bit larger than the girls, and his coloring is very distinctive," said Devney Bowen, Head Keeper at Rolling Hills Zoo. "The girls’ coloration is more muted, and his coloration is quite vibrant."

Transferring from ABQ BioPark Zoo in Albuquerque, New Mexico, JP completed a 30-day quarantine before being introduced to his new pack. His integration has been seamless, with JP quickly assuming the role of alpha male, while Lala has taken on the role of alpha female.

"This is what we expected based on past group behavior and dynamics, but it was nice to see them quickly settle into their roles," Bowen said. "We will continue to watch and monitor these dynamics as time progresses."

African painted dogs, known for their incredible social structure and teamwork, typically live in packs ranging from 10 to 40 individuals. Only the alpha male and female breed within the pack, reinforcing the strong social hierarchy. In their natural habitat, these animals form strong bonds and exhibit advanced communication skills, which are vital for hunting, raising pups, and maintaining pack unity.

JP is trained to participate in his own healthcare, performing behaviors that assist in his overall care. He also enjoys food and scent enrichment activities, as well as foraging. In the wild, African painted dogs are cooperative hunters with a remarkable success rate, achieving 60-90% of their hunts compared to 25-30% for lions and hyenas.

Despite their cooperative nature and strong survival instincts, African painted dogs face significant threats in the wild. Habitat fragmentation, viral diseases, and competition with larger predators like lions have contributed to their status as one of the world’s most endangered mammals. With only around 6,600 individuals remaining in the wild, primarily in southern Africa and parts of East Africa, conservation efforts are crucial.

Gov. Kelly directs flags at half-staff for former Chief Judge of the Kan. Court of Appeals

The Berkley Family joined a prestigious list of recipients for the Century of Family Banking award. The Kansas Bankers Association presents the award to those families who have served in the banking industry for 100 years.

The family’s banking legacy has its roots at The Bank of Tescott with Howard Jackson (H.J.) Berkley. Beginning as a cashier and janitor, he ultimately became president of the bank and worked there from 1924 until his passing in 1969.

This began a long association with banks across the state, carried on by HJ and his wife Pauline’s eight children: Arliene, Jack Belmont, Robert, Jerry, Paul, Hal, Don, and Mike. HJ also convinced his brother Bob Berkley, Mark Berkley’s father, to leave the farm and join him at the Bank of Tescott.

The Bank of Tescott has since seen generations of Berkleys employed at its institution, beginning with the eight siblings. Jack Belmont Berkley worked there for eight years, Hal Berkley was both president of the bank and served on its board of directors, and Arliene Matthews worked as a teller and was a director of the bank for over thirty years. Today, Hal’s granddaughter, Megan Berkley, works at the institution’s Tescott location.

“Since I started in 1969, our deposits grew from about 6.5 million to 450 million. Our employees grew from about a seven person staff to 60 plus employees,” said Mark Berkley, director emeritus at The Bank of Tescott. “And we now have five banking offices in four counties. We stress excellence in service in addition to promoting our local community.”

Bennington State Bank has belonged to the Berkleys since 1945. In 1967, all eight siblings purchased it from their uncles, and Mike Berkley became president. Mike Berkley spent his entire career at Bennington State and still serves as Chairman of the Board. Mike’s nephew, Burke Matthews, HJ Berkley’s grandson, started working at the Bennington State Bank in the 1980s. Burke Matthews later became president and is currently president emeritus.

“I think my parents taught us all a work ethic and a very strong belief that everybody was kind of equal in life and there's no favorites,” said Mike Berkley, Chairman of the Board at Bennington State Bank. “And we treated everybody the same, and we treated each other the same. And I believe mom and dad set that example for us.”

The Berkleys are involved in five different banking institutions across Kansas.

Bennington State Bank has become one of Kansas' largest private banking institutions, with over $950 million in assets under management and a Trust department that manages over $500 million. Bennington State Bank has ten locations throughout the state, all dedicated to high-level customer service and giving back to their communities—a trend carried on by all other Berkley-affiliated banks.

Solutions North, formerly Stockton National Bank, was purchased by H.J. and two of his sons, Jack Belmont Berkley and Robert Berkley, in 1961. Jack Belmont Berkley was president and director of the bank until his passing in 1998. Now, it carries over $270 million in assets and has expanded to six locations. Brian J. Berkley and Jonathan D. Berkley—both great-grandsons of H.J. Berkley—serve on the board of directors and work at the bank.

Three generations of the Berkley Family have been part of the State Bank of Downs, which oversees over $130 million in assets. It was purchased by the Berkley sons in 1961 and run by Paul Berkley and Jerry Berkley. Both men retired in the 90’s. Paul Berkley’s son, Bill Berkley, began working at the bank alongside his father in the 70s, and Bill’s son, Brandon Berkley, currently works at the bank’s Colorado branch. The Colorado branch operates under the name ‘Berkley Bank.’

In 1998, Hal Berkley’s son, Jeff Berkley, started Alliance Bank with two partners. His previous banking institution had undergone a series of mergers, leading them to neglect customer and community service. This prompted Jeff Berkley to open his own bank, where he could build relationships with customers and the community. With assets of over $149 million, Alliance Bank has two Topeka locations. Alliance Bank is currently in the process of being acquired by Bennington State Bank.

As the Berkleys celebrate a century of banking service, the institutions they’ve served maintain a hope for the future that stays true to their roots.

“I would hope as the family moves along that they're proud of how we do things,” said Darren Gragg, current president and CEO of Bennington State Bank. “But I would hope that, you know, they're proud of how we conduct ourselves each day. Obviously, the results matter. But how you get to those results probably matters more.”

Berkley family receives 'Century of Family Banking' award

At nine years old, Coronado Elementary student Ashtyn Hooper competed in the North American One-Armed Golfers Association (NAOAGA) Junior Championship in Easley, South Carolina, and secured a second-place finish. Her success is a powerful reminder that the game of golf – and life itself – is open to all, no matter the obstacles.

Hooper, who is missing her left hand, has been around golf her entire life. Her dad, Jason Hooper, is head golf coach at South High School. Ashtyn Hooper began at local practice facilities, increasing her strength to swing the club. She moved on to playing shortened holes and participated in First Tee classes at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

“We tried to keep it fun and let her go at her own pace,” explained Jason. “We wanted her to enjoy playing the game.” Her family was there to help creatively with challenges. “We made homemade prosthetics to help her attach her arm to the club, which allows her to swing with both arms,” said Jason.

Practice isn’t just about golf at the Hoopers.

 “Ashtyn is enjoying just being a kid and participating in a wide variety of activities such as tumbling, basketball, volleyball, singing and theatre. She loves being a student at Coronado Elementary School," Jason Hooper said.

The summer trip to South Carolina was a highlight for Ashtyn’s family. 

“It’s been such a blessing to discover all the opportunities that exist for kids with physical impairments,”Jason Hooper said. “It has been so much fun for her and our entire family to meet other people similar to Ashtyn and watch them excel in life, just as she has.”

“The trip was amazing,” she said. “I was so excited when I got second place and I can’t wait to do it again!”

She moved on to playing shortened holes and participated in First Tee classes at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.<figure>

 </figure>“We tried to keep it fun and let her go at her own pace,” explained Jason. “We wanted her to enjoy playing the game.” Her family was there to help creatively with challenges. “We made homemade prosthetics to help her attach her arm to the club, which allows her to swing with both arms,” said Jason.Practice isn’t just about golf at the Hoopers. “Ashtyn is enjoying just being a kid and participating in a wide variety of activities such as tumbling, basketball, volleyball, singing and theatre. She loves being a student at Coronado Elementary School," Jason Hooper said.The summer trip to South Carolina was a highlight for Ashtyn’s family. <figure>

K-State health expert says routines can help youth manage stress

There is, for sure, a lot of excitement associated with the beginning of another school year.

But Elaine Johannes, the Kansas Health Foundation’s Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University, says parents should also be aware that their teenager may at the same time be coping with anxiety and stress.

“The way that middle school and high school students do school today is different from what I did many years ago, when it meant only that we were going to school physically,” Johannes said.

Today, she said, “many of our students have remote learning part of the day – maybe at home, but maybe even at school. And then some have a dual enrollment in which they are taking college courses, perhaps at the high school, maybe remotely, or they’re driving to a nearby college campus.”

Factor in friendships, academics, sports, extra-curricular activities, a side job (for some) and more, and the onset of school is not always an easy transition for teenagers.

“When we think about back-to-school as one generalized topic,” Johannes said, “there are a lot of things that can create anxiety and stress.”

To help their teenager adjust, Johannes suggests parents establish a solid foundation at home, including a routine of sleep, a healthy diet and appropriate physical activity.

“Another part of that foundation is practice,” Johannes said. “Practice getting up, getting to school on time, getting on the Internet. The basics of success – which includes good physical and mental health – can be helped through routine, consistency and communication.”

When picking up children from school, parents may also want to avoid bombarding them with questions that reflect achievement, such as test scores or how fast they ran the mile in gym class.

“Those are things that can create more stress, too,” Johannes said.

“As parents, we should be wise with our inquiry; it could be that the child has had to answer questions all day. They don’t want to say anything more. But maybe during the evening there is time for inquiry when parents can listen to their child’s response without judging it or putting an achievement indicator on it.”

Johannes pointed to a line of research known as mattering, which she says “aims to help young people know that they matter in our lives; they matter more than a test score or getting an assignment in.”

When asking youth about their school day, Johannes suggests asking open-ended questions, such as:

“You know, we're talking about young people whose brains are not yet fully formed,” Johannes said. “So we want to give them time to develop, and we want there to be kind of a rocky development, because that young person is testing who they are, and they may not figure that out for quite a while.”

“As parents,” she adds, “we watch, we wait and we support and we figure out if our child has a talent or interest, or they change their interests because of development. So there's a bunch of back and forth between children and parents, and we don't want to push too quickly to have the young person locked in to who they are.”

KSRE: As school begins, students may face new anxiety

Last night Salvador Perez hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs as the Kansas City Royals completed a doubleheader sweep of Cleveland, beating the Guardians 9-4 to pull within one game of first in the AL Central.

The Royals won the day game 4-3 as Bobby Witt Jr.’s 27th homer — and 11th since July 19 — snapped a tie in the eighth inning.

In Game 2, Perez hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning — after nearly striking out — and then connected for his sixth career slam in the sixth off Pedro Avila.

More locally, with college football season officially underway Kansas Wesleyan is preparing for their season opener this Saturday, and will enter the new year ranked 24th in the country.

Kansas Wesleyan also led the Bissell Division with 11 players earning all-division preseason team honors, and picked to finish atop the KCAC Coaches Poll in the Bissell, level with Ottawa to start the year.

Among those honored for K-Dub were RB Luke Armstrong and Zarek Fewell, WR Rhadarious Lomax-Spivey, DE Josh King-Bradley, LB Quatama Massaqioi and DBs Julian Urioste and Jordan Dupre

And finally speaking of Kansas Wesleyan don’t forget to tune in for the first in stallment of the K-Dub coaches show tomorrow at 6:00 as we get you ready for the football kickoff.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Aug. 27

KWU Kansas Wesleyan’s weight room — the Everett Morgan Strength Training Center — will host a soft opening&nbsp;on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 1 p.m.

The weight room is opening after a complete renovation, including branded weights, new equipment and the construction of an office for the university’s first full-time strength and conditioning coach. Custom racks, benches, dumbbells, new flooring, cardio equipment, TVs and a new sound system are all being installed, with the expectation that KWU will have one of the best strength and conditioning facilities in the NAIA.&nbsp;

“This is another feather in the cap of Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “Numerous supporters have come together to help fund this project, which will better the physical development and preparation of countless Coyotes. We look forward to this space being an important part of the KWU experience!”&nbsp;

The Everett Morgan Strength Training Center is a vital part of the KWU lifestyle, as it serves a critical role for both athletics and the entirety of the KWU student body. It is also used as an academic lab.&nbsp;

“A large number of supporters have worked to make this possible,” said Oliver. “Business and individual donors helped light the fire at Night with the Yotes, while the Kieborz family, Mac Steele, Salina Regional Health Center, Bob Meyer and Marla and Lee Beikman were particularly vital in getting it across the finish line. There will be small pieces added&nbsp;after Thursday’s event, but the facility will be ready for Coyotes to use, and we couldn’t be more excited!”

KWU weight room to reopen Thursday

By SALINA POST HARVEY COUNTY— The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) are conducting a death investigation after a fatal crash site was discovered in Harvey County, Kansas.

Just before 3p.m. Sunday, the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a property owner who had located a red 2011 Chevy Silverado crashed on his property.

Deputies responded to the area, which was a field near mile marker 32 at the U.S. Highway 50 and Interstate 135 interchange. A deceased male body was located inside the vehicle.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance at approximately 3:10 p.m. KHP’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team also responded to investigate. Investigators suspect the vehicle was driven off the road, where it crashed into a tree.&nbsp;

Positive identification remains pending. The registered owner of the vehicle is Jonathan Clayton, 42, of Peabody. Clayton is a former Kansas Department of Commerce office emploee and the interim Peabody city clerk&nbsp; who has been missing since he was last seen on Aug. 3 in Marion County.

The Salina Police Department (SPD) is investigating a burglary at Pack Rat Smokes in Salina.&nbsp;

On August 24 SPD officers responded to the Pack Rat Smokes, 695 South Broadway Avenue, at 12:30 a.m. A person called SPD to report someone attempting to break into the business through a back window.&nbsp; According to SPD, the burglar gained access to the business by smashing an eight-inch by 29-inch window. A display was also smashed, causing a total of $500 in damage.&nbsp;

The thief stole eight packs of cigars and vapes valued at $50 before fleeing the scene.The suspect was captured on security footage wearing a hooded sweatshirt, sweatpants, and a full ski mask.

Despite reviewing the footage, SPD were unable to identify or apprehend the suspect and are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Over the weekend, the Kansas City Royals narrowly avoided a sweep at the hands of the Phillidelphia Phillies, winning Friday’s contest 7-4 before dropping Saturday and Sunday’s games by final scores of 11-2 and 11-3.&nbsp;

Kyle Schwarber had two hits and three RBI, and Garrett Stubbs had a career-best four hits to lead the Philadelphia over Kansas City on Sunday.

The Royals will be back in action to face the Cleveland Guardians this afternoon at 12:10. Despite the skid the Royals have still won 8 of their last 11 games and hold the second wild card spot with a 4.5 game lead. With a sweep this week KC could take over first place in the AL Central.

This weekend also saw the conclusion of the NFL preseason and on Saturday the Detroit Lions defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-17.

It was another strong showing from former Ellsworth star Kaden Davis, who caught two passes for 27 yards in the win.

Submitted As <a href="http://Salinatheatre.com">Theatre Salina</a> prepares to open its 64th season of production, THE LITTLE MERMAID will benefit from significant upgrades in sound and lighting.&nbsp; The Little Mermaid is the theatre’s 364th&nbsp;main stage production and will open September 6, 2024.&nbsp; Through a generous donation from the Jack Wilson Family Trust, the theatre has purchased a Yamaha DM7-EX sound board with greater capacity than ever before. Along with the new control board, the grant allowed the Theatre to acquire 16 new microphones with antenna, splitters, and wiring for each.&nbsp; This August, the Theatre was able to purchase an additional eight microphones and equipment through donations made during its annual Dancing with Salina Stars fundraiser. Combined with previously owned equipment, the Theatre can “dress” up to 32 actors without sharing equipment.&nbsp; Microphones are critical to enhance patron enjoyment and to provide a clear signal for listening assist systems at the theatre.A second and equally important advance is made possible through the generosity of the Earl Bane Foundation, the Dane Hansen Foundation, the Milton I. and Francis L. Stiefel Foundation, the Capital Federal Foundation, and two anonymous contributors.

These donations make it possible for Theatre to upgrade 90 of its traditionally sourced lights utilizing the ETC Source 4WRD, an LED (light emitting diode) retrofit, which will replace the 750-watt tungsten light sources currently being used. These retrofits will be installed during the run of THE LITTLE MERMAID, and will begin having a positive impact immediately. The lighting upgrade will reduce the electrical consumption of each instrument by 30% and reduce the heat output of each light by 70%, therefore creating savings in HVAC costs, especially in the summer months. In the past five years, all new lighting equipment purchased has been LED sourced, so this upgrade follows that responsible trend towards reducing Theatre Salina’s carbon footprint.

Theatre Salina announces technical upgrades, prepares for 64th season

Two pastors and a chaplain rallied a congregation to share memories of Jesse Wray, and honor his life by seeking to change their own.&nbsp;

Roughly 100 gathered Aug. 10 in the St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church sanctuary and let loose an array of emotions as they struggled to make sense of the loss.&nbsp;

The 25-year-old died during the evening of July 24 in an officer-involved shooting outside of a burning garage in north Salina. The shooting occurred shortly after Jesse’s father Larry Wray, was arrested at the garage on a warrant.&nbsp;

“Jesse was my best friend. There is a hole in my heart,” said his mother, Heidi Peterson, of Salina.&nbsp;

Seated nearby in a church pew, Abel Perez quietly listened to the banter, some loaded with words seldom used in a house of worship.&nbsp;

While occasionally drying tears, Perez thumbed through a file folder he brought to the service, providing recollections of his 16 years as a part of Jesse’s life.&nbsp;

His mother wanted to honor Perez, and listed him in the obituary as Jesse’s godfather.&nbsp;

“Jesse loved Abel. He was always there for him. He gave Jesse life,” Heidi Peterson said. “They had a really unusual bond.”&nbsp;

Perez was dubbed Wray’s “angel,” in a front-page Salina Journal article, July 10, 2008, for assisting in removing the boy, then 9, from Herington City Lake, after being knocked into the water by an out-of-control pickup truck. Jesse had been fishing.&nbsp;

Using CPR, Perez was then able to revive him.&nbsp;

He became close with Jesse, and offered to adopt him so he could escape a difficult childhood, and live in the Perez’s seven bedroom house in southeastern Saline County. Abel and Teresa Perez have three grown children and seven grandchildren.&nbsp;

“I would’ve made him accountable for his actions, and make his grades. At his mom’s house, he could come and go whenever he wanted,” Perez said. “I even offered to put him in my will. I told him ‘When I die, I’m gonna leave you something. You are my kid.’ It gave him another incentive to straighten his ass up. But he didn’t believe it. He didn’t want to leave his brothers.”&nbsp;

 </figure>By TIM UNRUH Salina Post ContributorTwo pastors and a chaplain rallied a congregation to share memories of Jesse Wray, and honor his life by seeking to change their own.&nbsp;Roughly 100 gathered Aug. 10 in the St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church sanctuary and let loose an array of emotions as they struggled to make sense of the loss.&nbsp;The 25-year-old died during the evening of July 24 in an officer-involved shooting outside of a burning garage in north Salina. The shooting occurred shortly after Jesse’s father Larry Wray, was arrested at the garage on a warrant.&nbsp;“Jesse was my best friend. There is a hole in my heart,” said his mother, Heidi Peterson, of Salina.&nbsp;Seated nearby in a church pew, Abel Perez quietly listened to the banter, some loaded with words seldom used in a house of worship.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>While occasionally drying tears, Perez thumbed through a file folder he brought to the service, providing recollections of his 16 years as a part of Jesse’s life.&nbsp;His mother wanted to honor Perez, and listed him in the obituary as Jesse’s godfather.&nbsp;“Jesse loved Abel. He was always there for him. He gave Jesse life,” Heidi Peterson said. “They had a really unusual bond.”&nbsp;Perez was dubbed Wray’s “angel,” in a front-page Salina Journal article, July 10, 2008, for assisting in removing the boy, then 9, from Herington City Lake, after being knocked into the water by an out-of-control pickup truck. Jesse had been fishing.&nbsp;Using CPR, Perez was then able to revive him.&nbsp;He became close with Jesse, and offered to adopt him so he could escape a difficult childhood, and live in the Perez’s seven bedroom house in southeastern Saline County. Abel and Teresa Perez have three grown children and seven grandchildren.&nbsp;“I would’ve made him accountable for his actions, and make his grades. At his mom’s house, he could come and go whenever he wanted,” Perez said. “I even offered to put him in my will. I told him ‘When I die, I’m gonna leave you something. You are my kid.’ It gave him another incentive to straighten his ass up. But he didn’t believe it. He didn’t want to leave his brothers.”&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Jesse’s boyhood hero stayed in touch, however, and enjoyed at least some form of kinship.&nbsp;“He called me ‘Pops,’” Perez said.&nbsp;Wray led a difficult life, was in trouble with law enforcement, did time in jail and abused drugs, according to his family.&nbsp;But there were high hopes for the youngster this spring.&nbsp;During a stay in the Saline County Jail, Jesse was in treatment with Deputy Marcia Crum, assistant in programs and classifications.&nbsp;“She made him happy with himself, gave him more self-confidence, and put some life back in him,” his mother said. “Jesse was moved to a halfway house in McPherson and was doing really well until my dad (Donald Lee) died (March 31).”&nbsp;Jesse didn’t react well to change.&nbsp;“I took all the pictures off the walls, to paint, and there was no furniture. I think it took away Jesse’s sense of having a home,” Heidi Peterson said “He started on drugs again and was already on the run by the end of May.”&nbsp;On the night of July 24, Salina Police officers were sent to 544 N. 12th after learning Jesse’s biological father Larry J. Wray, 44 — wanted on a felony warrant — was in the vicinity. Authorities were told he was in the detached garage, according to a Kansas Bureau of Investigation release, and was arrested without incident.&nbsp;Using “preliminary information,” the KBI reported that after Larry Wray was taken into custody, “an officer heard another person inside the garage.” &nbsp;It was Jesse D. Wray.&nbsp;A K9 officer ordered Jesse to exit the garage, but he refused. &nbsp;&nbsp;“He was holding a gun and made threats to shoot if law enforcement entered the garage,” the release reads. “Jesse barricaded himself inside the garage. Officers backed away, set a perimeter and called for the Salina SWAT Team to respond. Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol arrived to assist.”&nbsp;Officers then observed fire and smoke in the garage.&nbsp;“The large garage door opened and a female subject excited, followed by Jesse. Gunfire was exchanged. Officers from the Salina Police Department and troopers from the KHP fired rounds that struck Jesse,” the release reads.&nbsp;He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:45 p.m.&nbsp;Heidi Peterson said law enforcement “shot gas into the garage and that started a fire. That’s what bystanders told me.” Also quoting witnesses, she said Jesse was not armed when he exited the garage.&nbsp;“He made it all the way across the yard, in-between two houses, through a little latch gate, and pushed his way through a big wood fence, and they shot through a neighbor’s house where there was a little kid,” Peterson said.&nbsp;News of the shooting “tore me apart,” said Perez. “I was hurt and thought ‘How did he waste so many opportunities to better himself?’ He knew God saved him and gave him another chance. I had so many expectations and plans for that young man.”&nbsp;Learning about Jesse’s death on that Wednesday night — by social media posts — unleashed several weeks of sadness that still gnaws at his soul.&nbsp;“I knew since he was 15 or 16 that he was a drug abuser,” Perez said. “He went through treatment and was in jail about five years.”&nbsp;On the following Saturday night, Perez attended a candlelight vigil in Jesse’s honor at the summit of Indian Rock Park in Salina. Days later, he visited Ryan Mortuary and was granted a few minutes alone with the urn that held Jesse’s ashes.&nbsp;“I talked to him and cussed at him,” Perez said. “Then I prayed for him, told him I loved him and said, ‘May God have mercy on your soul.’ ”&nbsp;Thoughts turned to how he died, and why.&nbsp;“I was going to use all the resources I could to find out about what happened, and make sure the law didn’t mess up,” Perez said.&nbsp;Peterson said she was told by a KBI investigator that the agency’s report of her son’s shooting will be available Friday. Saline County Attorney Jeff Ebel said the KBI will turn over its case file on the shooting to him today.&nbsp;“As to whether there should be criminal charges filed or not, I will make the determination,” he said Wednesday.&nbsp;The prosecutor provided no time frame as to when any decisions are made.&nbsp;“I don’t know how much evidence there is to review,” Ebel said.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pastor Arthur Fair, of Salina, who serves First Missionary Baptist Church in Nicodemus, opened Jesse’s Aug. 10 service with a pair of scriptures. He shared one interaction with the young Wray at a local store.&nbsp;“I asked (Jesse) if he believed in Jesus. He said ‘I do, but I don’t let anybody know, because it makes you look weak,’ ” Fair recalled “A lot of times in life, things that happen to you, aren’t for you.”&nbsp;Jesse’s actions, “caused some people to come to church, and it changed a lot of people,” Pastor Fair said.&nbsp;Family and friends accepted the invitation to come forward with thoughts to share.&nbsp;“I cried for him. I always thought (he) would be here forever. I loved him so much. I will forever miss you. Just give my homey back,” said Adrian Martinez, a local friend.&nbsp;Fighting back sobs, Jesse’s youngest brother, Cash Peterson, 20, of Salina, read from a letter Jesse wrote within the past month.&nbsp;“This is coming from my soul. My life is a journey down a short road. I’m here to speak from my heart and mind. It’s one of a kind,” Cash recited.<figure>

 </figure>Seated nearby were Cash’s wife, Kylie and their 10-month-old twin daughters Phoebe and Mila.&nbsp;Another friend named Chris (he didn’t offer a last name) said Jesse touched his heart.&nbsp;“There are not a lot of true people. Jesse was a man of his word. We all love him. Let’s make this day about him,” Chris said.&nbsp;Clergy implored folks to pledge their faith, and consider making changes.&nbsp;“Allow God to bring something good out of (Jesse’s) life. We just want to help you get through this. I believe Jesse’s life has brought us here for you to realize you want something different,” Pastor Allen D. Smith said from his home church pulpit.&nbsp;“We welcome you to come forward and say ‘Lord I want something different.’ All you’ve got to do is ask. You don’t have to die the way Jesse did,” he said.&nbsp;Enthusiastic responses of “Amen” resonated from the pews.&nbsp;“How can anything good come of this? If one of you changes your life and returns to God, I’d say this is a win, and Jesse did not die in vain,” said Shawn Baird, chaplain at Salina Regional Health Center, who pastored Jesse while growing up in Herington.&nbsp;“I don’t want you to be stuck in a life that God doesn’t want you to have,” he said. “Life’s full of choices. He wants you to have a life. I know it’s hard, but I’ve seen it happen. We need a church family to walk with us.”&nbsp;Church leaders provided music. Millie Moye, who knew Jesse Wray from years of teaching in the Salina School District, led the congregation in singing “Oh How I Love Jesus.” She is a deaconess at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church.&nbsp;“I felt called to come,” Moye said.&nbsp;She described young Jesse in school as “just a normal quiet boy. He didn’t draw attention to himself.”&nbsp;Dealing with the loss of a loved one has changed Cash Peterson.&nbsp;“It makes me want to go out, do more and see more, and give my kids a better life,” he said. “Wish I could have spent more time with my brother.”&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Heidi Peterson accepted some blame for her Jesse’s troubles. She admitted to being a drug user, but boasted being clean for six years.&nbsp;“I think all of this happened for a reason. I just don’t know what it is. He touched a lot of lives,” she said. “Jesse’s in a better place now.”&nbsp;FACTOID: Jesse Wray’s half-brother, Gauge Peterson, 23, was arrested last week for failure to appear in court, said his mother, Heidi Peterson.
