ABILENE -- The Solomon Presbyterian ladies group made a donation of small, table-top sized, Christmas trees once again to Memorial Hospital in Abilene the week of Christmas. 

The group of 15 woman decorated the trees for the season, which were placed in the patient rooms at the hospital along with greeting cards they made. 

This is the third consecutive year the group has helped to spread Christmas cheer for patients in the hospital.

The Earl Bane Foundation has awarded the Salina Media Connection a grant to upgrade Cox Communication equipment from analog to digital for programs on Channel 20 and 21 in the coming week.

This will improve Salina’s community TV channel because digital signals have less noise and interference. They are also more reliable, according to Salina Media Connection’s Greg Stephens.

The grant will also be used to purchase an audio mixer processor to upgrade city and county meeting&nbsp;recordings and reduce echo feedback.

ABILENE -- Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene has added to its holiday lights and decorations. 

New red ribbons were added to the front of Memorial Hospital and additional snowflakes were added to the poles in the east parking lot of the hospital. 

The lights and ribbons were donated by the Memorial Health System Volunteer Corps (MHSVC). 

Memorial Health System has lighted holiday scenes on display along Brady Street in Abilene, some of which include motion. There are light scenes located at Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County, Memorial Hospital, and Village Manor. 

The MHSVC holds several fundraisers throughout the year, and uses the proceeds to support special projects within MHS.

Sadly, we have been notified of one additional death due to COVID-19 since our last update on December 21. Forty-eight members of our community have lost their lives to this virus. There have been 283 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since December 21. The total number of positive cases for Saline County has risen to 4,032. The dramatic rise in cases being reported to Saline County officials can be attributed to free testing being broadly available. "More than 1,400 people were tested for COVID-19 during the free-testing events this week," said Jason Tiller, director of the Saline County Health Department. "This highlights the importance of being tested even if you are not experiencing symptoms, so you can take appropriate steps to not spread the virus to others." Saline County: 1 additional death, 283 new COVID-19 cases

Police are looking for a man who was seen on security video taking a box of hats from the hood of a vehicle.

Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva reported this morning that a 50-year-old Salina man reported that he had left a package of hats with a farm logo on them on the hood of his vehicle in a parking garage at 227 North Santa Fe Avenue late Monday afternoon. 

Security video shows that later in the evening another man wearing a black sweatshirt with white writing who was pushing a cart and walking a dog, walked into the parking garage, took the box of hats, and left, Villanueva explained. The hats were valued at $250.

Deputies were sent to the 2900 block of East Old Highway 40 at 8:10 p.m. Tuesday for the report of a burglary at an old farmstead, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. Fourteen buildings on the property had been entered, with a number of locks and windows broken, he said. The incident occurred sometime during the day Tuesday, he added.

Soldan said that one item known to have been stolen was a red 2005 Arctic Cat 250cc two-wheel drive ATV valued at $3,585. The keys were with the ATV, he added.

TOPEKA — The former CEO of Saint Francis Ministries says he charged thousands of dollars to the organization’s credit cards because of the job’s travel and fundraising demands.

And, he said, the $65,000 purchase of Cubs tickets was just an opportunity to flip them for a profit on the secondary market.

Robert Smith, known as Father Bobby, released&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/FatherBobbyStatement.pdf">a statement</a>&nbsp;Tuesday through a public relations firm in which he lamented the “inaccurate and uninformed reporting” that followed his departure from Saint Francis. The nonprofit foster care provider severed ties with Smith and other leadership in November following&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2020/12/20/kansas-foster-care-leader-charged-469k-to-credit-cards-hid-financial-losses/">an investigation into Smith’s financial dealings</a>.

Kansas Reflector on Sunday reported on the results of an investigation that substantiated allegations of financial misconduct by Smith. The story revealed Smith from 2018 to 2020 charged $469,000 to credit cards for expenses that included first-class upgrades on airlines, five-star restaurants and hotels, luxury men’s clothing and Apple iTunes purchases. He didn’t respond to Kansas Reflector inquires for comment.

“To transform an organization requires tireless effort and commitment,” Smith said in the statement he released Tuesday. “I accepted the demand of being on the road for days and weeks every month — travel that incurred thousands of dollars spent on airlines, hotels, meals and donor development activities.”

Smith said he purchased $65,000 worth of Chicago Cubs playoffs tickets in 2019 as part of “a unique fundraising opportunity” offered by an unnamed benefactor. If the Cubs had made the playoffs, Smith said, Saint Francis could have sold the tickets for “far more than the face value of the tickets alone.” When the Cubs failed to make the playoffs, the $65,000 was refunded to Saint Francis.

“This was strictly a revenue opportunity, formalized by a legal contract between Saint Francis and the benefactor,” Smith said.

Saint Francis hired a Kansas City, Kansas, attorney to investigate Smith after a newly hired chief financial officer brought concerns about the organization’s financial problems to the board of directors in October. The investigator concluded that Smith hid financial losses from the board, authorized $11 million in payments to a company operated by Bill Whymark for software that crashed and destroyed financial records, and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on operations in El Salvador that included the harvest of a “miracle” food and credit cards requested for the purpose of bribing local officials.

Greg Meissen, chairman of the Saint Francis board, said Smith had justified investments on the premise that the software and miracle food would eventually generate profits. Those profits never materialized, and Meissen said the board was unaware of the true costs of the endeavors.

An earlier whistleblower report, delivered to the Kansas Department for Children and Families in November 2019, objected to the dealings between Saint Francis and Whymark. The anonymous author of the report identified Whymark and Smith as business partners.

Whymark operates WMK Research and SFW Technologies, both registered to an address in Mount Kisco, New York. At one point, the website for SFW Technologies identified Smith as a senior principal and executive director of social services. The photo and biography of Smith was removed from the website after staff questioned him about the relationship.

The investigation into Smith included an interview with an accountant who wondered if the level of spending on Whymark’s company amounted to embezzlement. A review of invoices and emails showed Smith spent little time reviewing the invoices before approving them, even though they reflected an improbable amount of time billed by Whymark.

“Let me correct one of many gross errors that has been repeated in media reports,” Smith said in his statement. “While I grew to respect and admire the depth of his intellect and expertise, I was never a personal, business partner with WMK Research president Bill Whymark.”

Saint Francis hired Smith as CEO in 2014. He became a canonical resident in the Diocese of Chicago in 2012.

Smith said he was sincere in his efforts to transform Saint Francis into a nationally and internationally respected organization. The Salina-based foster care provider serves 3,100 children in Kansas and is celebrating its 75th year as a social welfare agency.

“I am proud of what our team of incredibly big-thinking and dedicated professionals accomplished in my 6.5 years at Saint Francis,” Smith said. “I regret that with my resignation, the mission we started will not be fulfilled as originally envisioned.”

This past year has been a hard one. Though we are close to the renewed hopes of a new year, we still face what could be the hardest days of 2020 for some. No matter what you are celebrating this season — Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, Festivus – most plans have likely been altered. Some people have been lucky to experience only minor inconveniences or shifts, while others are facing a total breakdown of holiday celebrations and family traditions. My heart goes out to people who are struggling with this change. I was once just like you. When I was 12 years old, my oldest brother enlisted in the Navy and left for basic training near Chicago just before Thanksgiving. Since the base was only a five-hour drive from home, our family was able to participate in a Christmas Adopt-a-Sailor program to spend the day with him. &nbsp; Looking back, I had a lot of pre-teen anxiety about the effects this had on our holiday celebration and family traditions. It was the first time we ever changed our family routine, and I was convinced the changes were going to ruin Christmas. We had to shorten our visits with extended family on Christmas Eve so we could get a few hours of sleep before our 3 a.m. departure. We would not be opening presents around the tree on Christmas morning. It all just felt wrong. Our Christmas in downtown Chicago ended up being a great adventure. The city was like a ghost town. The only restaurant open was a two-story McDonald’s, and my siblings and I were so proud to rack up a $30 total, which makes me laugh now as it would be a bargain for a family of six today. We visited an equally deserted Navy Pier where our entertainment became exploring a water gunboat and chatting with the on-duty firefighters staffing it. We ended the day watching the latest James Bond movie at the theater since it was the only thing we could find open. &nbsp; This odd and presumably ruined holiday ended up being one of our most memorable Christmases. The highlights of the day were not presents, which I cannot even remember if we exchanged, or cool experiences. The greatness of the day came from the spoiled plans, laughter and shared experience of making memories together. We didn’t know it at the time, but this was the last Christmas we spent together as a family. Ten months later, my middle bother died in a car accident; my oldest brother was away from home for six years in the Navy; and my sister and I became adults with our own careers and families to work around for the holidays. I will not pretend that my family’s Chicago Christmas was magical, tradition worthy or even worth repeating. However, I am grateful for the time it gave us together and the way it mentally prepared me for the hard lesson of life’s changes. If you are anxious about how the holidays will turn out for your family and friends, I can share from experience that a break from tradition isn’t the worst thing that can happen. Even if you are sad, mad or disappointed about the circumstances, you can still make memories and celebrate with loved ones. It will give you something to talk about in future years when you are enjoying your holiday celebrations and family traditions.

INSIGHT: Breaking tradition

Today is Wednesday, Dec. 23, the 358th day of 2020. There are eight days left in the year. 

On Dec. 23, 1954, the first successful human kidney transplant took place at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston as a surgical team removed a kidney from 23-year-old Ronald Herrick and implanted it in Herrick's twin brother, Richard. 

In 1783, George Washington resigned as commander in chief of the Continental Army and retired to his home at Mount Vernon, Virginia. 

In 1913, the Federal Reserve System was created as President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Reserve Act. 

In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored the civil rights of about 1,500 people who had been jailed for opposing the (First) World War.

In 1941, during World War II, American forces on Wake Island surrendered to the Japanese. 

In 1948, former Japanese premier Hideki Tojo and six other Japanese war leaders were executed in Tokyo.

In 1962, Cuba began releasing prisoners from the failed Bay of Pigs invasion under an agreement in which Cuba received more than $50 million worth of food and medical supplies.

In 1968, 82 crew members of the U.S. intelligence ship Pueblo were released by North Korea, 11 months after they had been captured.

Ten years ago: Mail bombs blamed on anarchists exploded at the Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome, seriously wounding two people. Chicago Board of Election Commissioners ruled that former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel was a resident of the city and therefore eligible to run for mayor.

Five years ago: Protesters blocked access to a terminal and caused significant holiday traffic delays around Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport after staging a Black Lives Matter rally that also briefly shut down part of the Mall of America; the demonstrations were organized to draw attention to the recent police shooting of a Black man in Minneapolis. Peggy Say, 74, who spent nearly seven years on a tireless quest for the release of her brother, AP journalist Terry Anderson, and fellow hostages from kidnappers in Lebanon, died in Cookeville, Tennessee.

One year ago: Boeing ousted CEO Dennis Muilenburg as the company remained engulfed in the crisis stemming from the crash of two of its 737 Max airliners. A court in Saudi Arabia sentenced five people to death for the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi royal family; the five were among 11 people who were put on trial over the killing.

The end date for the reinforced box culvert work at the intersection of Arnold Avenue and Jumper Road has been adjusted to next year.

The City of Salina announced today that&nbsp;Reece Construction continues to work on replacing the reinforced box culvert. Arnold Avenue will continue to be closed to thru traffic just south of West Schilling Road and to the west side of the of the airport terminal western entrance.

Unforeseen circumstances and utility conflicts have slowed the work causing the anticipated roadway opening to be delayed until Jan. 4, 2021.

Passengers needing to reach the Salina Airport terminal continue to have access via Arnold Avenue from Centennial Road.

City bumps end date of culvert work at Arnold and Jumper to next year

WICHITA —A McPherson County man has been charged with crimes involving children, according to&nbsp;U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

Loren Olson, 68, Marquette, Kan., is charged with four counts of producing child pornography and one count of the sex trafficking of a minor. The crimes are alleged to have occurred in May, June and July 2020 in McPherson County, Kan.

Olson initially was charged by criminal complaint Dec. 9, 2020.

Happy holidays? Not if your pet gets sick. FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) discusses some unhealthy holiday temptations and how to keep your animals safe.

If your dog received a stocking full of pet treats, make sure he doesn’t gobble them all up at once, making them hard to digest. Unchewed pet treats can get stuck in the trachea (windpipe) or gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, and intestines).

If your dog is in obvious distress from eating too much too fast, contact your vet immediately. Some telltale signs are drooling, choking, or vomiting.

Take note of timing. If a bone or chew toy lodges in your dog’s stomach or intestines, the symptoms might not be immediate. Hours to days later, he may vomit and have diarrhea, be less active, not want to eat, and have stomach pain. If the blockage stays there too long, your dog may become very ill. When in doubt, contact your veterinarian, who may need to take x-rays or use an endoscope to see what and where the problem is.&nbsp;

Decorating your tree? Wrapping or unwrapping gifts? Keep a close eye on where you leave leftover tinsel, string, and ribbons.

Your cat may find these decorations irresistible because they look like easy-to-catch, sparkly, and wiggly prey. In fact, they can cause serious stomach and intestinal damage.

Play it safe by keeping tinsel off the tree and collecting all ribbons and strings after gifts are opened.

If you’re making salt-dough ornaments or play dough, do not let your pets near them. They contain a great deal of salt, which can be fatal to pets if eaten. Make sure the ornaments or play dough are well out of reach. Be sure to warn children who may want to give a “treat” to Bowser or Kiki.

If you have holiday plants such as poinsettias, holly, or mistletoe around, take care. When you display (or dispose of) these plants, your cat may decide they’re good to eat.

Take poinsettias, which can irritate your animal’s mouth and stomach and may cause vomiting and diarrhea. If your cat has snacked on poinsettia leaves, contact your veterinarian’s office.&nbsp;

And be careful what you put in the trash can. Dogs, especially, are notorious for helping themselves to the turkey carcass or steak bones, which can get stuck in your dog’s esophagus, or trachea. Sharp pieces of bones can also injure your dog’s mouth, esophagus, and stomach, and can cause severe internal injuries.

You may know that eating chocolate can be dangerous to your dog or cat. But that’s not the only thing.

Vomiting is generally first, followed by symptoms associated with the sudden lowering of your dog’s blood sugar (hypoglycemia), such as decreased activity, weakness, staggering, incoordination, collapse, and seizures. Check the package label to see if the product contains xylitol and call your vet immediately if it does.

As for eating chocolate, some pets develop severe complications, including liver failure, bleeding disorders, and death. As with xylitol, if you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate, consider it an emergency and call your veterinarian immediately.

Kansas Wesleyan University Department of Music Chair, Dr. Milt Allen, can now add hall of famer to his long list of musical accolades. 

A Salina native and graduate of Salina Central High School (SCHS), Allen was recently tabbed as an inductee of the school’s newly established Salina Central Band Hall of Fame.

Joining Allen as a fellow inductee is Gayle McMillen, who served as the SCHS band director during KWU department chair’s time as a Mustang. A retired music instructor and a trombone player for the Salina Symphony since 2003, McMillen is also a member of the Kansas Music Educators Association Hall of Fame (2009) and the Southwestern College Fine Arts Hall of Fame (2010).

McMillen and his former pupil will be officially inducted by Salina Central at a later date.

Allen’s upcoming induction accompanies numerous awards at local, state and national levels, including recognition by the United States Congress for Musical Excellence. He is a two-time high school Teacher of the Year, a Kansas Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalist, and is listed in various Who’s Who publications. Other honors and distinctions include five awards from the Ohio State University School of Music, recognizing his teaching and service and selection as a Conducting Fellow for the Eastman Wind Ensemble’s 40th Anniversary. In 2008, Allen became the first civilian in the history of the United States Air Force to tour as a featured conductor (USAF Heritage of America Band) and received an Eastern Illinois University Achievement and Contribution Award.

Along with his many accolades, Allen is the founder of The Music Guerrilla, which works with underfunded/underserviced programs in Rwanda, Zambia, Haiti and Compton, Calif.

Allen, McMillen to be inducted into Salina Central Band Hall of Fame

Vortex has announced executive management changes to set the stage for its next generation of corporate leadership. 

These changes will go into effect Jan. 1, 2021. 

Founded in Salina in 1977, Vortex has grown from a regional business to a multi-national manufacturing and engineering company specializing in process equipment for handling dry bulk foods, chemicals, and minerals.

In addition to his role as chief executive officer (CEO), Travis Young has been appointed president to lead the overall direction and strategy of the company. Young is the fourth president &amp; CEO in the company’s 44-year history, succeeding Jeff Thompson, Lee Young, and Neil Peterson. Young has been with Vortex for 16 years, previously leading Vortex’s marketing and international business development initiatives.

Thompson is stepping down as president and chief operating officer; but will retain his position as Vortex’s chief financial officer (CFO). In his role, Thompson will also serve as a senior advisor to the new leadership team and will continue to oversee IT, Human Resources, and Accounting. Thompson served as president &amp; CEO for the past 13 years and has been with the company for 18 years.

Brain Burmaster has been promoted to chief sales &amp; marketing officer (CSO) Burmaster will be responsible for client retention, customer service, operational engineering, and overall revenue growth for the company. Burmaster previously served as vice president of sales and has been with the company for 14 years in a variety of customer-focused disciplines.
