NWS in Wichita has issued a winter storm warning in effect from midnight tonight to 6 p.m. Monday for the following counties in our area.

Heavy snow is expected with potential for a wintry mix early in the event. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches with locally higher amounts possible and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch are forecast.

Winds will pick up during the morning to sustained speeds of 20 to 25 mph with gusts near 30 mph.

Snow packed roads and blowing snow could make travel very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

MWS in Hastings, Neb., has issued a winter storm warning in effect from midnight tonight through 3 a.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Heavy snow expected, possibly preceded by a brief period of freezing drizzle. Total snow accumulations of generally 6 to 11 inches, with the highest amounts focused south and east of the Nebraska Tri Cities, NWS noted. Ice accumulations of a light glaze. Northerly winds during the majority of falling snow will average 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to around 30 mph, so at least some minor drifting is likely.

Any light icing from freezing drizzle should mainly occur before sunrise Monday, as precipitation first gets underway. The majority of the snow, and the heaviest intensity, will then occur during the daytime hours Monday before decreasing in intensity Monday evening into the overnight hours. Please note that snow may not end completely Monday night, as very light snow or flurries could linger beyond the end time of this warning. In addition, please note   that this Warning does not include a weaker storm system that could bring a few more inches of snow to parts of the area mainly Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night.

UPDATE: NWS issues winter storm warnings, advisories for our area

MCPHERSON – In a year that stretched health care resources to their limits, McPherson College graduate Stefan Krsmanovic gained valuable job experience on the front lines as an intern with the McPherson County Health Department during his senior year. It is what eventually helped him secure a position with the Sedgwick County Health Department after graduation.

Krsmanovic is just one of many success stories from the McPherson College graduating class of 2020, according to Amy Beckman, executive director of career services. Since commencement in May, 95 percent of the class has secured employment or further education. Additionally, of those graduates with jobs or graduate school placements, 82 percent had at least one internship while at McPherson College.

“Despite an uncertain job market because of the pandemic, our students remained successful in securing their first job,” Beckman said. “Our placement numbers are very similar to previous years, which I think is remarkable considering all of the challenges this class faced. I think their success illustrates the value of a liberal arts education that produces graduates who can adapt to the job market.”

While many colleges report placement rates similar to McPherson College, President Michael Schneider says the college’s placement numbers are a true reflection of its graduates.

“We can account for nearly every graduate when we track our outcomes,” he said. “Most colleges can account for only 10 to 20 percent of any graduating class. When we report 95 percent of a class has secured employment or further education, we are talking about the entire class not just a portion of the class. When you add our strong placement rate to our efforts at reducing student debt through The Student Debt Project, McPherson College graduates are getting a head start at a successful future.”

The Student Debt Project, now in its second full year with nearly 200 students participating, combines financial literacy, mentorship, and matching funds to show students how they can reduce their college debt before graduation.

Kylee Martin, another 2020 graduate, was in the pilot group of the Student Debt Project. Although she was not able to participate in the project for her entire time at the college, by paying on her college account while in school, she has been able to graduate with a reduced amount of student debt allowing her to focus on starting a career as a marketing coordinator for Motion Products, Inc. in Neenah, Wisc.

“Participating in the Student Debt Project at McPherson College allowed me to focus on gaining real-life experience through internships and secure a full-time job before I graduated,” Martin said. “Knowing that I have paid a significant portion of my college debt has given me confidence in my financial situation. This wouldn’t have been possible for me without the Student Debt Project. The program gave me the opportunity to pay off as much debt as possible while in college and taught me financial knowledge that I will use throughout my entire life.”

Like Martin, many McPherson College students were able to secure employment or graduate school placements prior to their commencement. According to Beckman, half of the recent graduating class had outcomes prior to commencement.

“I am very proud of our students for accomplishing so much during this pandemic,” Beckman said. “Our graduates entered a variety of different job markets across the United States this year, and they were able to successfully find jobs or further their education. It is a significant feat in our current environment.”

McPherson College reports 95% placement rate for Class of 2020

TOPEKA -- Washburn University has announced its fall 2020 Dean's List honorees.

 To qualify for the Dean's List, a student must be enrolled in 12 hours of graded credits and earn a semester grade point average of 3.4 to 3.99.

In order to help reduce the contact between staff and patrons upon entry, Tony’s Pizza Events Center is implementing a Clear Bag Policy effective April 1, 2021. 

The new policy will allow for a speedier entry process, improve security and limit the need for staff to handle a patron’s belongings.

“We want all of our patrons to have a safe and enjoyable experience at Tony’s Pizza Events Center,” said Susan Trafton, general manager. “Our team has worked together with the City of Salina and Saline County to put together a comprehensive plan to enhance the health and safety of every person who visits the facility.”

Beginning April 1st, approved bags will include clear tote bags up to 12” x 12” x 6”, one-gallon plastic freezer bags, or small purses or clutches not to exceed 8.5” x 5.5”. Patrons whose bags exceed these dimensions will be asked to return belongings to their vehicles. 

Along with large bags, prohibited items include, but are not limited to:

• Alcoholic beverages or controlled substances (unless prescribed for the possessor)

• Professional cameras, audio or visual recording equipment, radios, televisions or any other such electronic devices, except when authorized.

• Weapons and dangerous devices of any type

• Items which may be used as a weapon or projectile.

In addition to the new clear bag policy, staff has installed touchless faucets and paper towel dispensers in all restrooms (self-flushing toilets were previously installed), automatic hand sanitizer stations, touch-free temperature scanners, as well as upgraded HVAC filtration and developed event floor plans that allow for social distancing.

Clear Bag Policy begins April 1 at Tony's Pizza Events Center

Salina Area Technical College is trying something new this spring, offering eight-week classes in U.S. history and interpersonal communication.

Both classes cover the same material as in a traditional 16-week class and are taught online, so students can fit the classes around jobs, family and other commitments.

Both classes start on March 8 and end on May 7 and are for three hours of college credit. Tuition is $99 per credit hour.

Stanton Gartin, Vice President of Instruction at Salina Tech, said shorter classes have proven popular at other colleges he’s worked at.

“People appreciate that they don’t have to commit for 16 weeks,” Gartin said.

Both classes will transfer to colleges and universities in Kansas and across the country, Gartin said, which means they’re ideal for people planning to continue or re-start their education – or who want to re-take a class and earn a higher grade.

“If you’ve been out of school for a few years, and thinking about getting a college degree, this is a good way to get started,” Gartin said. “And if you started college, but weren’t as successful as you had hoped on your first try, these classes are a chance to fix that and make a fresh start. And at just $99/credit hour, they’re a lot more affordable.”

The two compressed classes are even an option for students attending another college this spring, Gartin said.

“If you’re not having a productive spring semester, you could take one or both of these classes and stay on track to graduate on time,” he said.

A nod to “1984” author&nbsp;George Orwell: We have met Big Brother and often, he is us.

The nation rightly remains outraged at the Jan. 6 riot that trashed the U.S. Capitol, threatened elected officials and resulted in five deaths. Pressure was on police to swiftly arrest those involved.

Each day brings new reports of federal authorities using what they say are social media photos, cellphone records and other data to identify members of the mob.

Orwell predicated his draconian vision on government’s installing a device in every home, watching, tracking and recording each life. In 2021, we are the ones installing the devices, 24/7, and not just in homes but in pockets, purses and cars.

Combine this self-generating trove of online personal information with an ever-greater number of cameras in public and private spaces, the increasing forensic ability of facial-recognition software and the mushrooming presence of smart devices in our daily lives. We have every reason for new concerns about the potential chilling effect on free expression and our rights of assembly and petition.

In media reports, we’ve seen how easy it is for the FBI to identify a rioter within hours by taking the merest flash of cellphone photo, applying facial identification examination even to people wearing masks, then marrying that computer construct to earlier, less-obscured photos. In one case, authorities matched earlier photos taken in a Washington, D.C., hotel lobby with photos posted online from the Capitol and identified and arrested a suspect shown standing in the U.S. House chamber in full riot gear.

To be sure, we have tolerated, even encouraged, growing government surveillance methods and technology for many years, particularly in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, in the hope they will make us more safe.

By 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court was openly musing about the effects of pervasive high-tech government surveillance, even though the case at hand involved the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.law.cornell.edu/supremecourt/text/10-1259" target="_blank">somewhat low-tech use of a GPS monitor</a>.

At the time,&nbsp;Justice Sonia Sotomayor&nbsp;was concerned about a chill on “associational and expressive freedoms … (through) generating a precise, comprehensive record of a person’s public movements.” She also warned that “government can store such records and efficiently mine them for information years into the future.”

In 2019, in a case involving&nbsp;<a href="https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/585/16-402/" target="_blank">surveillance of a robbery suspect</a>,&nbsp;Chief Justice John Roberts&nbsp;observed that many people “compulsively carry cellphones with them all the time. A cellphone faithfully follows its owner beyond public thoroughfares and into private residences, doctor’s offices, political headquarters and other potentially revealing locales. … Accordingly, when the government tracks the location of a cellphone, it achieves near-perfect surveillance as if it had attached an ankle monitor to the phone’s user.”

In words foreshadowing today’s post-riot investigations, Roberts wrote, “the government can now travel back in time to retrace a person’s whereabouts … (and) because location information is continually logged for all of the (then) 400 million devices in the United States … police need not even know in advance whether they want to follow a particular individual, or when.”

Police should have ready access to effective tools in fighting terrorists and other criminals. As the widespread demand for swift justice for the insurrectionists who invaded the Capitol shows, many, if not most of us, applaud law enforcement’s use of high-tech tools.

History tells us that successful technology both endures and expands in scope and that freedoms lost are hard to restore. The early days of taps on phone wires has evolved into high-tech gadgets that use the vibration of windowpanes caused by speech to monitor conversations inside an office. Listening devices hidden inside walls designed to capture a simple conversation have morphed into government access to massive data dumps containing the details of millions of phone calls that can be analyzed to track separate calls worldwide.

Add in the digital trail we leave from cellphones and on social media and we hand the government an intimate self-portrait more complete that even our closest family members could draw.

We need to continually review safeguards on the government’s power to track our lives and to set limits when such surveillance is warranted — literally, by the courts. The most critical times for such alertness are in the aftermath of shocks to the nation’s psyche such as the disgraceful Capitol invasion.

What is the impact on those assembling peaceably to petition government for change when, via technology, we automatically create records of conversations and meetings and their exact times, dates and locations — potentially illustrated with photos and videos of participants?

We’re already seeing pushback because of flaws in both the technology and its application, ranging from gross misidentification to racial bias or worse: China is reportedly using facial recognition to track and arrest some racial minorities.

To be clear: Members of the mob that ransacked the Capitol should face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. But we all need to be wary of the law of unintended consequences, of unexamined recognition of the use of pervasive, all-seeing technology in the hands of those who would, willingly or unwittingly, chip away at our core First Amendment freedoms in the name of protecting them.

Kansas Travel offers suggestions for fun art destinations in state

A storm system will bring accumulating snowfall to central and portions of south central Kansas Sunday night and Monday. 

Highest snow totals are expected along Interstate 70 where 4 to 6 inches of snow is forecast, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita. Elsewhere snow should range from a dusting along the Turnpike to 2 to 4 inches from Hutchinson to Russell. Some light accumulations of ice are also expected as well.

Winter storm watches have been issued for our area.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a winter storm watch in effect from late Sunday night through Monday afternoon for the following counties in our area.

Heavy snow is possible with some wintry mix initially. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze are possible. Winds are forecast to be from the north at  10 to 20 MPH with gusts around 25 mph.

Snow packed roads could make travel very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes. Those with travel plans are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and have alternate plans should a warning be issued.

NWS in Topeka has issued a winter storm watch in effect from late Sunday night through Monday afternoon for the following counties in our area.

Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 9 inches could fall along and north of an Abilene to Holton line. Varying snow totals from a trace to a few inches will be focused generally south of this line. Ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch will also be possible especially before the start of any snow.

Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Additionally, NWS in Topeka has issued a winter storm watch in effect from late Sunday night through Monday afternoon for the following counties in our area.

NWS issues winter storm watches for counties in our area

'Picnic' showing to benefit Friends of the Smoky Hill Museum

At slightly more that a month old, Rolling Hills Zoo’s
adorable new giraffe calf has been named "Korey."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Korey, the calf of Billie and the late BT, was born on Dec. 17 at 7:23 p.m. Once Korey was born, Billie went to work cleaning him and by 9:14 p.m. that night, he was on his feet and taking his first steps. Korey was close to six feet tall when he was born.

He can now be seen curiously exploring his surroundings from the Giraffe
Barn’s Viewing Room, or during warmer weather, outside in the giraffe
yard.&nbsp; 

To allow for social distancing, the zoo asks that only
one family group be in the viewing room at a time when visiting the Giraffe Barn. &nbsp;Guests are also asked to keep their voices
soft and refrain from banging on the glass as to not startle the giraffes.

Saline County: 70 new COVID-19 cases; 3,381 recovered

Frito-Lay today issued a voluntary recall of a small number of 13 1/2 oz. “Party Size” bags of Ruffles Original Potato Chips because they may contain undeclared milk ingredients. 

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product contained inside the recalled bags.&nbsp; A total of 50 bags are being recalled.

Frito-Lay today issued a voluntary recall of a small number of 13 1/2 oz. “Party Size” bags of Ruffles Original Potato Chips because they may contain undeclared milk ingredients. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product contained inside the recalled bags.&nbsp; A total of 50 bags are being recalled.The products covered by this recall were distributed to retail stores in&nbsp;Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and&nbsp;Arkansas.No other Ruffles products, sizes or flavors are recalled, including bags in Variety Packs.The recall was initiated after it was discovered that 50 bags of Ruffles Original Potato Chips were inadvertently filled with another flavor of potato chips, potentially exposing consumers to undeclared milk.No allergic reactions related to this matter have been reported to date. Frito-Lay has informed the FDA of the action.Consumers with the product noted above can return the product to a retailer for a refund or contact Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 1-800-352-4477 (9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. CST, Monday-Friday).The specific recalled product information is listed below:<figure>
