In a post on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NWSWichita">Facebook page</a> late this morning, NWS-Wichita wrote:

Once again our apologies for the inconvenience regarding the test tornado drill. As part of the Kansas Severe Weather Preparedness Week, a test Tornado Warning was sent out at 10 am CST this morning. Typically, this warning is used to test NOAA Weather Radios, the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and serves as an opportunity for local jurisdictions to test their outdoor warning sirens. However, this year the test Tornado Warning also activated the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system which sends alerts to many cellular devices. When this WEA alert was issued, there was no wording indicating this was a test Tornado Warning. We have started an investigation into why the WEA system was activated. We sincerely apologize for any confusion.

A tree and street light paid the price in a hit-and-run accident in downtown Salina earlier this week.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that sometime Sunday or Monday, an unknown vehicle that was traveling southbound on North Seventh Street attempted to make a right-hand turn onto West Iron Street. The vehicle went across West Iron Street and up onto the south sidewalk in the 200 block of West Iron Street, striking a tree and a street light.

The tree was completely knocked over and the street light sustained scrapes. Both are owned by the City of Salina.

Evidence collected at the scene indicates the vehicle to possibly be a gray Hyundai or KIA, Forrester noted.

Among 3,861 students, a total of 1,130 students qualified for the High Honor List by achieving a 4.0 straight "A" average, while 2,731 students earned a 3.5 to 3.99 average to qualify for the Honor List.

To qualify for academic honors, undergraduate students must be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours for the semester.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

NWS in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 7 p.m. today for the following counties in our area.

Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast, with winds from the south at 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Additionally, relative humidity is forecast to be as low as 14 percent.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

NWS in Hastings, Neb., has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph are forecast, with relative humidity expected to be as low as 14 percent.

Any fires that develop may be difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Use extreme caution if engaging in activities that could start a fire.

Statewide tornado drill set for today at 10 a.m.

The county's mask mandate and several executive sessions are among the items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday via Zoom and the county's YouTube channel. This decision to revise the meeting format was made to align with the mass gathering limitations imposed by the Saline County Commission and Saline County Health Officer.

Commissioners are scheduled to review with Jason Tiller the COVID-19 situation in Saline County and what affect that might have on the county's mask mandate.

Additionally, commissioners are to consider a request from the Road and Bridge Department to award bids for yellow and white traffic paint and reflective glass beads. The total cost of staff's recommended bids is $94,907.50, which comes in under the $100,000 budgeted for such purchases.

Other items on the county agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Hear the Road and Bridge Department update from Darren Fishel, administrator

●Hear County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes' weekly update, which is to include a radio project update and an update on progress on the Saline County Jail project.

●Meet for a study session concerning radio towers. According to information in the meeting packet, "this portion of the meeting is reserved for discussion among Commissioners on topics for which no action is currently proposed."

We are pleased to share that no additional deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported since our February 26 update; the total number of members of our community who have lost their lives to this deadly virus stands at 106. Salina Regional Health Center has notified us that they currently have seven patients who require hospitalization for COVID-19.

There have been 16 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since our last update on February 26, which brings the total number of positive cases for Saline County to 5,951.

The Health Department staff are now actively monitoring 595 cases. At least 5,250 have recovered. Our dashboard has been updated with the latest information:

Information Network of Kansas, State Board

The Information Network of Kansas (INK) was created by an act of the Kansas State Legislature in 1990 to provide Kansans equal electronic access to state, county, local, and other public information via gateway service. INK is a model for public/private cooperation, and provides Kansans equal access to governmental data via the Internet. It is a governmental service administered for the good of the public, while benefiting from the entrepreneurial spirit and efficiencies found in private business.

Kansas Propane Education and Research Council (KanPERC)

KANPERC develops programs and projects to enhance consumer and employee safety and training; provides research and development to improve existing propane technology; and works to increase efficiency of propane use. KanPERC is also charged with designing any other programs to educate the public about the safety and environmental aspects of propane.

The purpose of the board is to promote and showcase Kansas agriculture, industry, and culture; to create opportunity for commercial activity; and to provide an educational and entertaining experience that is the pride of all Kansans.

The purpose of the Council is to advise the Kansas Board of Healing Arts in carrying out its mission. The council also conducts examinations and registrations of applicants in the field of respiratory therapy.

Western States Water Council (WSWC)

The WSWC is a valuable group of water peers from across the west that gathers to compare and discuss local and national water issues. It has been helpful in pushing for initiatives in congress like dryland Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program with the USDA and state primacy over water. Historically, the chief engineer and director of the Kansas Water Office have formally served since the inception of the Council in the mid-1960’s.

Lindsborg woman among governor's appointments

A Salina man has been arrested in connection to the murder of Courtney Ann Hoffman.

In a news release issued this afternoon, the Salina Police Department (SPD) reported that Clarence Darnyl Brown, 34, of Salina, was arrested on the following requested charges in connection with the Hoffman murder.

Tuesday at approximately 11:42 a.m., Salina Fire Department EMS and SPD officers were dispatched to the 700 block of North Fourth Street for a report of the sound of gunfire and someone screaming.

Upon arrival, officers located Hoffman inside a vehicle at 731 North Fourth Street. She had a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead by EMS personnel.

On Saturday, SPD identified Nelson Gerrod Hull III as a suspect in the murder. An arrest warrant for murder in the first degree was issued by the Saline County District Court for Hull.

"During the course of the investigation, detectives developed information that Brown aided Hull after the commission of the homicide," SPD noted in information released this afternoon.

Hull remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous. SPD encourages anyone with information pertaining to Hull's current location to contact 911 immediately.

Hull is described as a Black male, 35, 6'3" and 220 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo on the right side of his neck: Mi Familia, SPD noted.

The investigation into Hoffman's murder is ongoing. Arrest made in Hoffman murder case; Hull remains at large

A Salina man has been has been arrested in connected with the death of his father.

According to information from the Salina Police Department (SPD), officers and Salina Fire Department EMS were dispatched to the 900 block of Mellinger Drive at approximately 8:46 p.m. Saturday for the report of a domestic violence battery.

"Information learned at the scene indicated that Chad Eric Jones, 48 years old, had battered his 79-year-old father, Carlton Jones, and his 78-year-old mother before leaving the scene," SPD reported in a news release issued this afternoon.

EMS personnel determined that Carlton Jones had serious life-threatening injuries and immediately transported him to Salina Regional Health Center, where he was admitted and placed in the intensive care unit, SPD noted.

Officers located and stopped Chad Eric Jones, who was  operating a motor vehicle near the crime scene. At that point, he was arrested in connection to the battery of his parents in the 900 block of Mellinger Drive. 

On Sunday afternoon, Carlton Jones died while in SRHC ICU, according to SPD.

Chad Eric Jones has been booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, SPD reported.

Salina man arrested in connection to death of father

This pandemic has brought lots of side effects. Lost jobs, lost income, and lost homes are themes we see around the country — and scammers know just how to take advantage of these worries. Another side effect of the pandemic is isolation, which scammers also like to use to their advantage. During National Consumer Protection Week, I’m asking you to join me in fighting isolation to fight scams.

The FTC knows that people who talk about scams are much less likely to fall for them. So, when people of any age are on their own too much, they don’t have the chance to talk things out. And when scammers — who are calling, emailing, and texting — might be a person’s main source of contact, nothing good happens next.

So, today, pick up the phone. Call someone you haven’t talked with in a while. Maybe somebody who might be too much alone. See how they’re doing. And work into the conversation these ideas:

●Scammers have lots of fake stories: early or guaranteed access to vaccines (no such thing), you’ve won a prize (you haven’t), your computer needs tech support (it doesn’t), they’re an online love interest (not if they want money).

●Whatever their story, scammers want you to pay or share your personal information.

●Nobody legit will ever (EVER) tell you to pay by gift card, money transfer, or cryptocurrency.

Another side effect of the pandemic is isolation, which scammers also like to use to their advantage. During National Consumer Protection Week, I’m asking you to join me in fighting isolation to fight scams.The FTC knows that people who talk about scams are much less likely to fall for them. So, when people of any age are on their own too much, they don’t have the chance to talk things out. And when scammers — who are calling, emailing, and texting — might be a person’s main source of contact, nothing good happens next.So, today, pick up the phone. Call someone you haven’t talked with in a while. Maybe somebody who might be too much alone. See how they’re doing. FTC: When it comes to scams, let’s look out for one another

Fire weather watches have been issued for several counties in our area.

A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

NWS in Wichita has issued a fire weather watch in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening for the following counties in our area.

Extreme grassland fire danger is possible. Winds out of the southwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph are forecast. Relative humidity is expected to be as low as 17 percent, NWS-Wichita noted.

Additionally, NWS in Hastings, Neb., has issued a fire weather watch in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening that includes Mitchell County.

Winds out of the southwest at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph are forecast. Relative humidity is expected to be as low as 15 percent, NWS-Hastings noted.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Use extreme caution if engaging in activities that could start a fire.

NWS issues fire weather watches for Tuesday

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Mankato. This advisory is not related to COVID-19.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

●If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

●Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

●Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic ice maker.

●Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

●Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on March 01, 2021, and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE issued the advisory because of a waterline break resulting in a&nbsp;loss of pressure in the system. A loss of pressure may lead to inadequate chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.
