KKOA Leadsled Spectacular returning to Salina in July

The <a href="https://ksbstate.org/">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a> has announced that the deadline to register for the 2021 session has been extended until June 30.

 Individuals can continue to register after that date, but only on a space-available basis.

The 2021 ALBSK session will be held Aug. 1 through Aug. 7 at Kansas State University in Manhattan. The program, which was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be in its 83rd year.

This year’s session was originally scheduled to be held next week (June 6-12), but earlier this year, Kansas Boys State leadership made a decision to move from its traditional early June event to the first week of August to allow time for the coronavirus vaccine to be fully available to the general public.

“We did not want to cancel the event a second year in a row,” said Tom Wierman, Kansas Boys State executive director. “After consulting with numerous individuals, we decided holding a virtual event was not feasible nor of interest to potential delegates after having spent most of the last 15 months going to school virtually. With the assistance and blessing of Kansas State University officials, it became clear that moving the date was in the best interest of the delegates, staff/volunteers and the University.”

Traditionally, Kansas Boys State is for individuals who have completed their junior year of high school. With last year’s cancellation, the <a href="https://ksbstate.org/general/2021-registration/">ALBSK program announced in January</a> that it was expanding the pool of registrants for this year’s session to include those who have completed their senior year of high school (those who missed out on last year’s event due to the coronavirus pandemic), as well as individuals who have completed their sophomore year of high school.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas program provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government, and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

Those wishing to attend the program should visit <a href="http://ksbstate.org">ksbstate.org</a> to register. In addition, anyone can nominate individuals to attend Kansas Boys State by going to <a href="http://ksbstate.org">ksbstate.org</a> and submitting the person’s name, mailing address, e-mail address, high school and phone number. Boys State of Kansas extends deadline for 2021 session

The Monkees farewell tour is making a stop in Salina's Stiefel Theatre this fall!

This farewell tour will mark the end of a unique project that began in 1965 when four young men were cast in a television show about a struggling rock band that was inspired by the Beatles’&nbsp;A Hard Day’s Night. Few could have predicted the impact the Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Formed in Los Angeles for the eponymous television series, the quartet of Dolenz, Nesmith, the late Peter Tork and the late Davy Jones brought a singular mix of pop, rock, psychedelia, Broadway and country to their music. Two decades later, in the midst of a new burst of Monkee-mania,&nbsp;The Monkees&nbsp;popped back onto the charts, bringing the total number of weeks to 102.

By the time the series aired its final new episode on March 25, 1968, the Monkees had seen three further albums top the charts —More of the Monkees,&nbsp;Headquarters, and&nbsp;Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn &amp; Jones, Ltd. All were released in 1967, staggeringly enough, racking up several more hit singles, with “I’m A Believer,” “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” “The Girl I Knew Somewhere,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” “Words,” “Daydream Believer,” “Valleri,” and “Tapioca Tundra” all finding their way into the&nbsp;Billboard&nbsp;Top 40. The final tally: 16 million albums and 7.5 million singles sold in a mere 2 1/2 years.&nbsp;

After the series’ two-season run, the group went on to star in the cult feature film,&nbsp;Head&nbsp;(co-written by Jack Nicholson) and a TV special (33 1/3 Revolutions per Monkee) while also continuing to record new material. But as the ’60s gave way to the ’70s, the members of the Monkees eventually gave in to their individual musical interests and went their separate ways.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In February 1986, after MTV broadcast a marathon of&nbsp;The Monkees&nbsp;series, Dolenz, Jones, and Tork reunited for a 20th anniversary tour, with Nesmith joining them onstage for the Los Angeles date of the tour. In 1996, all four members of the group reunited for a new album (Justus) and TV special (Hey, Hey, It’s the Monkees). In the wake of Jones’s death on Feb. 12, 2012, the surviving members of the Monkees reunited and performed a series of concerts. The shows were received so triumphantly that Dolenz, Nesmith, and Tork returned the following summer for a tour dubbed, “A Midsummer’s Night With the Monkees.”&nbsp;

To celebrate the Monkees’ 50th&nbsp;anniversary in 2016, the surviving members of the band recorded the critically acclaimed album&nbsp;Good Times&nbsp;(produced by the late Adam Schlesinger). Much like the Monkees’ early albums, it featured tracks written for the band by a group of gifted songwriters, including Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Andy Partridge (XTC) and more. Following the passings of Davy Jones and Peter Tork (who succumbed to cancer in 2019), Nesmith and Dolenz have honored the music and the memory of The Monkees onstage.

Recent obituaries

Salina Area United Way announced today that it has awarded $105,000 in Make A Difference Grants to 13 community agencies and programs.

"We are thrilled to be able to fund 13 agencies in our communities working to Make A Difference. These agencies are working tirelessly to address needs in our communities," said Claire Mullen, executive director for the Salina Area United Way. 

Grant awards are based on an analysis of how well programs match United Way’s Community Goals, the ability to meet community needs, organization budget, financial accountability, and plans for service and management.

The Salina Area United Way mission is to "Strengthen Our Community." The community goals are as follows.

Health: Increase the number of youth and adults who are healthy and avoiding risky behavior

Education: Raise the graduation rate

Financial stability: Increase the number of families who are financially stable

"Nonprofits in our 10-county service area are doing incredible work," said Margaret Dixon, grant committee chair. "We can make these awards thanks to the generous support of our community. Please know that every donation counts. All of us, working together, can make a difference."

Volunteers on the local United Way Grant Committee reviewed 17 applications. The total amount of requests was more than $139,000. All funding recommendations were reviewed and approved by the Salina Area United Way Board of Directors.

Agencies and programs that received funding include the following. 

Ashby House, Financial Fitness Initiative All Ashby House program directors, case managers, and support staff members will complete the Financial Peace University training and then develop and begin administering the new Financial Fitness Program to clients.

Belleville First United Methodist, Belleville First United Methodist Belleville Children's Program The program will educate students about relationships, loving others, and looking for ways to serve others while also providing education and activities for students to learn lessons about life and activities to promote healthy choices.

Big Brothers Big Sisters, Community Based Mentoring The goal of this project is to increase community based matches and support/retain these matches for the first year.

CAPS, Ottawa County/Saline County CASA This project will document, monitor, and communicate information related to the foster child’s health more efficiently to the magistrate judge by recruiting, training, and supporting community volunteers to speak up for children who are thrust into the court system through no fault of their own.

Catholic Charities, Mobile Outreach - Reaching Out to Our Rural Neighbors in Need This program will take social services to low-income individuals in rural communities of the Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas' 31-county service area to alleviate financial hardship and stabilize family situations.

Communities in Schools, Student Supports in Lakewood Middle and Salina Central High Schools Through school-wide and individual student programming, site coordinators will address specific needs and reduce personal and systematic barriers to success.

Independent Connection, Youth Services This program will provide career development and independent living skills training to students and youth with disabilities in Saline County by increasing youths' job skills knowledge prior to graduation as well as increasing their hire ability right out of, or even while still attending high school.

Salina Child Care Association The organization will work with children to make sure they have the skills they need to be successful upon entering kindergarten.

Salina Housing Authority, Family Self-Sufficiency This program will assist participating families in achieving goals to help them in advancing to self-reliance by reducing or eliminating the need for welfare assistance.

Saline County Department of Senior Services, Transportation for Homebound Seniors This program will provide any Meals On Wheels homebound senior who has limited resources with a transportation pass.

Southeast of Saline USD 306, Southeast of Saline Aquaponics Southeast of Saline students will learn about and develop a passion for growing fresh produce, giving them the opportunity to eat locally grown food through hands-on application to STEM-related subjects.

St John's Missionary Baptist Church, Kid Kare Child Development Center This program will provide a high-quality early childhood program in a safe and nurturing environment to challenge and stimulate each child through a variety of developmentally appropriate activities and to enhance language literature, music and movement, creativity, and socialization.

Workforce Solution, OCCK Career Closet - Clothing and Hygiene Kits This program will purchase professional business clothing for job-seeking customers who need to attend interviews and hygiene items to help with the full appearance to aid in that ever-important first impression.

Local United Way announces $105,000 in grants

Salina police are investigating an incident in which a window was shattered at a central Salina business Saturday night.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, officers were dispatched to Bike Tek, 670 S. Ohio Street, at 11:15 p.m. Saturday for the report of a shattered window. The northeast window on the business was shattered by unknown means. The glass fell into the business and onto several of the bikes.

The window was approximately 9-foot by 6.5-foot and valued at $1,000, Forrester noted.

Surveillance video in the area is being reviewed.

Window shattered at central Salina business

A vehicle stolen at Salina Regional Health Center Monday was found hours later in far north Salina.

Anthony Richard, 54, of Salina, told police that he parked his 1996 blue/green Chevrolet Lumina on the east side of Salina Regional, 400 S. Santa Fe Avenue, in the loading zone and left the vehicle running at approximately 9:10 a.m. Monday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. 

Richard said he intended to be in the hospital only a few minutes. When he returned to where the vehicle had been parked at approximately 12:10 p.m., the vehicle was missing. The vehicle was valued at $2,500.

At 10 p.m. Monday, an officer located the vehicle parked at the ISIS Shriners building, 200 E. Diamond Drive. A witness reported that Jacob Denton, 34, of Salina, was seen driving the vehicle, Forrester noted. Video surveillance from a neighboring business was reviewed and an officer was able to identify Denton exiting the vehicle.

Denton was located in the area of the Red Carpet Inn, 222 E. Diamond Drive.

Denton was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester reported.

The Smoky Hill Museum will return to pre-pandemic hours starting Tuesday. 

The free museum is open Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Hours had been temporary reduced to provide safety measures to protect visitors and guests.

“We are excited to return to our longer hours,” said Museum Director Susan Hawksworth. “Now that the public is more comfortable getting out and about, we wanted to give them ample time to visit the museum.”

Museum staff will continue with heightened cleaning, and the museum and its galleries have been treated with Prevent X, a long-lasting antimicrobial that provides continuous surface protection in between regular cleaning and disinfecting. In addition, all interactive elements will soon be available.

Visitors will also be able to view the new exhibit,&nbsp;The Crossroads, which celebrates the birth, growth and change of downtown Salina.&nbsp;

I’ve heard every excuse in the book for people not leaving jobs they hate. No matter the excuse, it always comes down to fear and doubt—fear of failing, fear that time has passed them by, fear of what&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/changing-careers-midlife" target="_blank">others will say</a>, and doubting they have what it takes to succeed in something different.

But it’s time to address one fear that comes up again and again because of my connection with Dave Ramsey:&nbsp;I’m afraid to switch careers while I’m working on Baby Step 2. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll only be deeper in debt.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Dave Ramsey’s plan, Baby Step 2 is when you get out debt by using the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/how-the-debt-snowball-method-works" target="_blank">debt snowball</a>. You live on rice and beans, get a second job, and do whatever else you can to dump all your debt, except for your mortgage.

I get it. You don’t want to rock the boat by changing careers during something like this. It feels risky, and that’s the last thing you need when you’re on Baby Step 2. But what if I told you switching careers while you’re in debt doesn’t have to be risky at all?

The truth is, you don’t have to rock the boat by switching careers. You would only rock the boat if you jumped while the boat was still miles away from the dock. Instead, you need to move the boat (your dream job) as close to the dock as possible. When you take careful steps, not only does switching careers while in debt become possible, but it also starts to work out in your favor.

How, you ask? Create a strategic plan, and take baby steps. Yep, we take baby steps here, too. Follow these three steps, and you’ll be moving at the right pace&nbsp;and&nbsp;in the right direction:

First, I want you to make sure what you&nbsp;think&nbsp;you’d rather be doing really is your sweet spot. Remember, your sweet spot is the point where your greatest talent, greatest passion and mission intersect. That means, not only are you really good at it, but you love doing it, and the result of the work matters to you.

Start by making a list of your natural gifts, passions and values. How does that list line up with what you’re currently doing and what you&nbsp;could&nbsp;be doing in a different job? Don’t be afraid to bring in a few people who know you well and will speak truth to you. Ask them if they believe what you’re thinking about doing lines up with any talents and passions they’ve noticed in you.

Research is a big part of moving the boat up to the dock before you step onto it. In this phase, I want you to ask questions like:

●What positions can I find in my city that meet my sweet spot criteria?

 ●What qualifications or certifications do I need to make the career move?

●If the new job requires certifications I don’t have, how much is it going to cost me to get those?

●How long will it take to do everything I need to do in order to get that dream position?

You probably noticed some of those questions involve dollar signs. Even if you need to spend some money for certifications or courses, it’s possible to do it without slowing down your debt snowball momentum. Adjust your budget and make sacrifices where you can. Pick up a side gig, or even have a big, old-fashioned yard sale.

Step 3: Practice the Proximity Principle

You’ve clarified and verified your sweet spot, and done all the research necessary to decide how you’ll make the move. Now it’s time to practice the tried and true Proximity Principle.

The Proximity Principle says this: In order to do what you want to do, you need to be around people who are doing it and in places where it’s happening. In this stage, I want you to spend time making connections and building relationships. Start looking for ways to volunteer in the industry you want to be in, shadow someone who’s doing what you want to do, check out local meetings, and be prepared to pick lots of people’s brains over coffee.

Let me be clear for a moment: Because you’re not taking any leaps, you’re still going to be working your old job while you’re practicing the Proximity Principle and finding money to fund your transition. That’s okay. You may hate your job today, but tomorrow, you’re going to turn hate into great.

When you’re on this plan, you’ll come to a point where you no longer think about your current job as something you hate, because now&nbsp;it’s a tool that’s funding your future. So, be grateful for your current position. After all, it’s a big part of the reason you can take baby steps and switch careers the right way!

With a bit of talent, even shipping labels can be made into works of art.

The First Friday showcase at The Flower Nook is proof of that. 

The First Friday event is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday at The Flower Nook, 208 E. Iron Avenue.

What has now become the showcase for June came about when Peggy DeBey of The Flower Nook challenged inmates at Ellsworth Correctional Facility to create visual artwork on four-inch by 8-inch manila shipping tags using any type of medium.

"The result of the tag art challenge features a variety of themes with exceptional art work," DeBey noted.

The Flower Nook supplied the material and Ellsworth Correctional Facility offered art classes for those first-time artists, as well as to those who just wanted to brush up on their skills, DeBey explained.

"I originally pitched the idea of using tea bags, but was told I could not bring tea bags into the cells as they could be/would be used for drugs," DeBey told Salina Post. "I did some extensive searching and we finally agree the tag was similar in size."

DeBey said she presented the project to Ellsworth Correctional Facility as she knew part of the mission of the facility was to provide encouragement, support, and opportunities for the inmates. DeBey said she believes "creating, whether the process takes place inside a jail cell or in a fully outfitted studio setting, produces a dialogue first for personal reflection and then builds community connections."

While the inmates will not be able to attend the First Friday event, nor will their names be revealed, a journal notebook will be available for those attending the event to share their thoughts and encouraging messages about the art, DeBey said. Additionally, The Flower Nook plans to create a YouTube video to share with Ellsworth Correctional Facility

The showcase tag art, however, is not the only thing to see during The Flower Nook's First Friday event. Also available will be the following, according to information on The Flower Nook's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheFlowerNookSalina">Facebook page</a>.

●A book signing for artist Mary Ann Tanking's second edition of Flora, Fauna, Fish &amp; Fowl.
