The Catholic Schools of the Salina Diocese have been named a 2022 Cognia System of Distinction for excellence in education. Cognia, the global nonprofit school improvement organization, recognized 96 schools/school systems in the United States and Puerto Rico and nine in other countries across the globe as Schools/Systems of Distinction.&nbsp;

The Catholic Diocese of Salina&nbsp;is&nbsp;recognized as a 2022&nbsp;Cognia&nbsp;System&nbsp;of Distinction&nbsp;a program which&nbsp;recognizes pre-K–12 education institutions that exemplify excellence in education and service to learners.&nbsp;Cognia selected&nbsp;the Salina Diocese&nbsp;as one of&nbsp;the&nbsp;96&nbsp;schools&nbsp;and&nbsp;38&nbsp;systems&nbsp;out of more than&nbsp;1,500&nbsp;institutions&nbsp;that were eligible&nbsp;for&nbsp;its&nbsp;2022<a href="https://www.cognia.org/services/accreditation-certification/schools-of-distinction/">Cognia Schools&nbsp;and Systems&nbsp;of Distinction</a>.&nbsp;

“All of our school buildings came together to make this possible. The collaborative efforts of our school leaders, council members, teachers and students were far above my expectations. We are honored to be named a Cognia System of Distinction,” said Geoff Andrews, superintendent of schools.

<a></a>This cycle was the first time&nbsp;the Salina Diocese sought&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cognia.org/services/accreditation-certification/">Cognia Accreditation</a>&nbsp;as a district.&nbsp; Previous years’ accreditation was through individual schools. The District Review took place in March 2022.&nbsp;The Salina Diocese&nbsp;participated in&nbsp;Cognia’s&nbsp;rigorous Accreditation Engagement Review process, which&nbsp;is based on research-based performance standards.&nbsp;The process includes&nbsp;a&nbsp;third-party&nbsp;review&nbsp;by education experts&nbsp;of evidence, interviews,&nbsp;and classroom observations. The evaluation covers&nbsp;Leadership Capacity, Learning Capacity,&nbsp;and Resource Capacity, as well as a&nbsp;demonstrated&nbsp;commitment to continuous improvement.

Salina Diocese schools honored by global nonprofit 

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is holding public meetings to help communities and public water supply systems learn about the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new Lead and Cooper Rule Revisions (LCRR).&nbsp; 

Under the LCRR, public water supply systems are required to prepare and maintain and inventory of service line materials.&nbsp; This inventory is to be submitted to KDHE by October 16, 2024.

Public water supply system decision-makers, operators, and the public are encouraged to attend to learn more about the inventory requirements and actions that can be taken to reduce lead exposure risks in drinking water.&nbsp; Piping containing lead can become a potential health risk in drinking water. &nbsp;Some homes (typically built before 1988) may have lead service lines that connect to the public water supply system.&nbsp; Young children, infants and fetuses are particularly vulnerable to lead in drinking water and water used for formula because the physical and behavioral effects of lead occur at lower exposure levels in children.

Public water supply lead, copper rule implementation topic of meetings

Salina Adult Education Center (SAEC), USD 305, is part of a national network of literacy organizations offering adult education and family literacy programs to help Americans gain the basic literacy skills they need to be employable in today’s tough economy.

According to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.proliteracy.org/" target="_blank">National Coalition for Literacy (NCL),</a>&nbsp;more than 40 million adults in the U.S. cannot read above a third grade level, and nearly 63 million cannot do fourth grade math. One in five adults have trouble reading communications from their children’s teachers. One in three adults have difficulty creating a household budget. One in four adults have trouble navigating websites and using digital tools at work. And among immigrants, only half are proficient in English.

“A community’s most rich resource to assist adults to gain skills and credentials to improve employment and stabilize lives is an adult education center,” said Kelly Mobray, director of SAEC. “Our services allow adults to gain or improve their reading, writing, math and language skills to take their lives in new directions and to contribute even more to their communities.”

Adults who participate in adult education programs have higher incomes, resulting in more spending and higher tax revenue for their community, according to NCL. They have better health outcomes, leading to greater workplace productivity and a reduction in community health care costs. They have higher participation in civic activities like voting.

Today through Friday is Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, aiming to raise awareness of the importance of adult education. 

“If you are aware of someone in your community, a friend, family member or co-worker, that needs to be connected with our center for services, please encourage them or bring them in yourself.” said Mobray. “Walk beside someone who could use that empowerment and support to take the next step. Our SAEC team is ready and eager to help them earn a high school diploma, prepare for college classes or improve their English skills!”

USD 305: Adult education is our community's rich resource

A recently opened restaurant in south-central Salina was the victim of an early Friday burglary.

Officers were dispatched to Wingstop, 1621 S. Ohio, Friday after an employee arrived at the restaurant and discovered the safe and its contents missing from a back storeroom, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. It appeared that the backdoor to the restaurant had been pried open.

Total loss was estimated at just over $5,000.

Surveillance video in the restaurant shows a white male, approximately 40 years of age, with longer hair entering the restaurant at approximately 5:12 a.m. Friday. Drag marks from the safe could be seen from the back door into the parking lot.

Forrester said police are still reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses in the search for information about the burglary.

Record temps expected Monday, Tuesday, then some relief possible

Research published earlier this month in the&nbsp;Journal of Applied Social Psychology&nbsp;investigated whether face masks affect social interaction. Three researchers, two from the University of Kansas and one from Wellesley College conducted a masking experiment with 250 college students in 2012, well before the COVID-19 pandemic.

They found that “mask wearing had no effect on the ease, authenticity, friendliness of the conversation, mood, discomfort, or interestingness of the interaction. There were no discernible consequences of political ideology on the partner selection process or the evaluation of the interaction. Mask-wearing did not disable successful social interaction in this setting.” &nbsp;

They note that pre-pandemic, facial masks were mainly associated with medical professionals such as surgeons as well as woodworkers and others who needed protection from dust. Therefore, these results were from before the pandemic that introduced “symbolic, political, and tribal connotations.” They cite many studies done since the beginning of the pandemic that found a major change related to conspiracy ideology, political tribalism and freedom.

Since masking has now become a political act, their pre-pandemic study provides a measure of how the supposed disruption of wearing a mask is contrived from political ideology rather than from any actual limitations caused by masking.

Their pre-pandemic research showed “the liberal-conservative dimension played almost no role in response to wearing masks and interacting with masked others in 2012.” But a study of mask-wearing in 2020 by van Kessell &amp; Quinn found mask-wearing “...was the most common difficulty for Republicans during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Democrats considered it a minor problem, typically complaining how others refused to wear a mask. Referencing another researcher, “this suggests that there is nothing inherent in wearing a mask that might concern conservatives—it is more likely the political meaning of mask-wearing that is being objected to.”

Since I have teacher contacts from Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan, I am well aware of the responses of their teachers and schoolchildren who rapidly adopted face masks and returned to face-to-face schooling with careful procedures for checking temperature and regular testing. This was not really a major change for them since Far Eastern populations have been using face masks for decades to reduce the spread of fall and winter diseases. The upgrade to N-95 and equivalent masking was no big deal.

In the United States, schoolchildren also rapidly adapted to facial masks and often were eager to show off their unique batman or other mask decorated with favorite characters.&nbsp; For the very few with burdens from asthma or a special education need to lip read, schools could easily make accommodations to unmask these few without increasing the danger level of schooling dramatically. In the end, it is not the schoolchild who initiates the complaint about masks, but the political parents. —And mainly in the Western countries where individualism (selfishness) overrides responsibility to others.

A solid and up-to-date 6-page summary of “COVID-19 and children” is provided in the September 9, 2022 issue of the journal&nbsp;Science&nbsp;(pages 1144–1149). This addresses our current knowledge on why COVID-19 is generally milder in children, why a few children develop the very serious MIS-C, the problem of long covid in children, and the importance of vaccinating children against COVID-19. Most important, “there is now unequivocal evidence that children play an important role in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, particularly within school and household settings.” Younger children can be “silent” asymptomatic spreaders in school outbreaks, which then spread into their community and home.

Clear evidence now shows the greater cases that occurred when schools remained open and lacked masking. This pretty much condemns the politicians who assailed school closures, railed against mask wearing and even passed laws preventing school masking requirements. Their actions increased sickness and death.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

We are now entering the colder seasons where more people will congregate indoors and breathe more aerosol droplets exhaled by others. Asia will mask up. More of their people will survive. We probably will not.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Referencing another researcher, “this suggests that there is nothing inherent in wearing a mask that might concern conservatives—it is more likely the political meaning of mask-wearing that is being objected to.” Since I have teacher contacts from Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan, I am well aware of the responses of their teachers and schoolchildren who rapidly adopted face masks and returned to face-to-face schooling with careful procedures for checking temperature and regular testing. This was not really a major change for them since Far Eastern populations have been using face masks for decades to reduce the spread of fall and winter diseases. The upgrade to N-95 and equivalent masking was no big deal. In the United States, schoolchildren also rapidly adapted to facial masks and often were eager to show off their unique batman or other mask decorated with favorite characters.&nbsp; For the very few with burdens from asthma or a special education need to lip read, schools could easily make accommodations to unmask these few without increasing the danger level of schooling dramatically. In the end, it is not the schoolchild who initiates the complaint about masks, but the political parents. —And mainly in the Western countries where individualism (selfishness) overrides responsibility to others. A solid and up-to-date 6-page summary of “COVID-19 and children” is provided in the September 9, 2022 issue of the journal&nbsp;Science&nbsp;(pages 1144–1149). This addresses our current knowledge on why COVID-19 is generally milder in children, why a few children develop the very serious MIS-C, the problem of long covid in children, and the importance of vaccinating children against COVID-19. Most important, “there is now unequivocal evidence that children play an important role in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, particularly within school and household settings.” Younger children can be “silent” asymptomatic spreaders in school outbreaks, which then spread into their community and home. Clear evidence now shows the greater cases that occurred when schools remained open and lacked masking. This pretty much condemns the politicians who assailed school closures, railed against mask wearing and even passed laws preventing school masking requirements. Their actions increased sickness and death.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; We are now entering the colder seasons where more people will congregate indoors and breathe more aerosol droplets exhaled by others. Asia will mask up. More of their people will survive. We probably will not.&nbsp; &nbsp;John Richard Schrock has trained biology teachers for more than 30 years in Kansas. Millions of Americans watched live telecasts of nuclear tests while worrying about fallout or atomic attack. This presentation will explore how President Eisenhower dealt with public anxieties and Cold War challenges concerning the bomb and show how nuclear dangers and nuclear fears tested his presidential leadership.

Pach is an associate professor of history at Ohio University. He specializes in the history of U.S. foreign relations and recent U.S. history. His research has focused on U.S. involvement in the Cold War and the Vietnam War as well as the Eisenhower, Johnson, and Reagan presidencies. He has a particular interest in television coverage of international issues and the intersections between politics, popular culture, and international history.

Duck and Cover: Eisenhower, the Cold War, and the Atomic Bomb

Kansas Forest Service helps fight wildfire in Ellsworth, Lincoln counties Sunday

A variety of topics are on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday, including the pond at Jerry Ivey Memorial Park and the proposed 2023 budget.

Jerry Ivey Memorial Park pond, budget on Salina city agenda

The exhibit Full Circle: The Art of Teaching Art, created by Nancy Williams, ’91, in conjunction with Noah Smucker and Noah Wellbrock-Talley, opens Monday in The Gallery at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Through their works, Williams, a KWU alumna who has taught middle school art for 25 years at USD 305, and her two former students, Noah Smucker and Noah Wellbrock-Talley, aim to show her influence upon young artists, as well as the range and variety of art they can produce.

Smucker and Wellbrock-Talley both currently teach art at Lakewood Middle School and Meadowlark Elementary School, respectively.

The exhibit will feature various mediums, including pencil, graphite, oil, acrylic, watercolor, collage and mixed media. It is scheduled to run through Oct. 28.

An exhibit reception is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday. The Gallery, located in Sams Hall of Fine Arts, open to the public at no charge.

KWU alumna featured in university’s next art exhibit

Fort Riley sets aside a fall Saturday in September each year for an open house and apple day celebration. This year it will be on Saturday.

 Admission is free from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at both the Artillery and Cavalry Parade Fields.

Ron Stewart, coordinator for the event, said this will be the 36th apple day event on post. "Some of the events will include the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard, weapons&nbsp; firing, static displays and of course live entertainment."

There will be military police working dog demonstration, an opportunity for robotics, along with the Meet Your Army Campaign to try and attract individuals 18-25 to join the military. 

"We're going to allow them to use our simulators. That's a tank simulator and that's our aviation simulator, said Stewart. "How the catch is that will have to go through our recruiters to use that."

The Family Readiness Group will sell 14 separate food items for the public to choose from. They will have apple menus plus food items such as hot dogs and hamburgers. There wlll be traditional apple pie sales by the Historical and Archaeological Society featuring pies made using Libby Custer's recipe.

If you do not have a federal or military ID you will need to go to the Visitor Control Center at the Henry Gate off of I-70, exit 301 to get a pass, or you can apply for a pass early online at the Fort Riley homepage.

Rainfall across area varies from trace to 3.50 inches

On a beautiful Sunday morning, Salinans were out picking up branches and other debris left in the wake of the thunderstorms that rolled through the area Saturday night. 

Occasionally, a chainsaw could be heard revving as larger tree limbs were being made ready for removal.

While the storms brought much-needed rain to the area, they also included hail and high winds that knocked down tree branches and caused power outages. At 8:39 p.m. Saturday, a 78 mph wind gust was recorded at the Salina Regional Airport.

At one point Saturday night, approximately 7,000 Evergy customers in the Salina area were without electricity, as were more than 2,100 DS&amp;O customers. Just before 11 a.m., 198 Evergy customers in Salina and fewer than five customers in Assaria and Carlton were still without electricity. DS&amp;O was reporting no outages.

The National Weather Service recorded numerous reports of hail Saturday, including the following.

Lincoln: 1.5-inch hail reported at 6:30 p.m.

Beverly: 1-inch hail reported at 7:04 p.m.

One mile north-northeast of Beverly: 1.25-inch hail reported at 7:16 p.m.

Kanopolis: 1-inch hail reported at 8:07 p.m.

Seven miles west-northwest of New Cambria: 1.75-inch hail reported at 8:13 p.m.

One mile west of New Cambria: 1.75-inch hail reported at 8:17 p.m.

Five miles northwest of Smolan: 1-inch hail reported at 8:25 p.m.

Marquette: 1.25-inch hail reported at 8:36 p.m.

Two miles south-southeast of Salina: 1-inch hail reported at 8:40 p.m.

Marquette: 1.25-inch hail reported at 9:36 p.m.

At times, heavy downpours caused street and road flooding in parts of Salina and Saline County, prompting Saline County Emergency Management to issue a series of severe weather updates on the county Facebook page, including one at 10 p.m.:

PLEASE STAY OFF THE ROAD. There continues to be water, stalled vehicles, and (west of the city) cows blocking the road. If you must drive, slow down and avoid standing water.

Today let’s go to the center of the country to visit an innovative family which has centered its business on high quality, locally produced fresh food, including their own specialty pork.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last week we met Kaden and Emily Roush, the owners of R Family Farms near Lebanon - the geographic center of the contiguous United States. The Roushes operate a niche hog production system involving Berkshire pigs. What is the history of Berkshire hogs?&nbsp;

According to legend, 300 years ago Oliver Cromwell’s army was encamped in winter quarters at Reading, the county seat of the shire of Berks in England. They discovered the hogs there to be larger than any swine of the time and to produce ham and bacon of remarkable quality. That was the beginning of the Berkshire breed.&nbsp;

For years, the royal family kept a large herd of Berkshires at Windsor Castle due to the excellent carcass quality of the hogs. In 1823, the first Berkshires were imported to the U.S. In 1875 the American Berkshire Association was created, becoming the first swine registry to be established in the world.&nbsp;

In modern times, Kaden took note of the carcass quality of these hogs. For example, in a summary of tests conducted over a 20-year span at the National Barrow Show in Austin, Minnesota, Berkshire pigs scored highest of all major American pure breeds in sensory quality.&nbsp;

R Family Farms began raising Berkshire hogs. The business now specializes in private label production and direct online marketing of their Berkshire pork. R Family Farms is a member of the From the Land of Kansas program of the Kansas Department of Agriculture.&nbsp;

During the pandemic, the Roushes were handling more than 1,000 orders per year out of their garage. They were looking for a retail outlet when something happened in their hometown.&nbsp;

A grocery store had been operated in Lebanon for many, many years. In the 1970s, it was purchased by the LaDow family and operated as LaDow’s Market for decades.&nbsp;

As the LaDows were getting older, some people wondered what would happen to the store when the LaDows retired. Then the husband passed away. It appeared the store would close.&nbsp;

With help from K-State’s&nbsp;Rural&nbsp;Grocery Initiative, R Family Farms applied for a grant from the Healthy Food Financing Initiative. The HFFI was authorized by the 2014 farm bill. Its’ mission is to improve access to healthy foods in underserved areas, create and preserve quality jobs and revitalize low income communities.&nbsp;

The program is administered by the Reinvestment Fund on behalf of USDA&nbsp;Rural&nbsp;Development. HFFI provides capacity building and financial resources to eligible healthy food retail projects in underserved areas.&nbsp;

In June 2022, USDA announced the current HFFI grants, including three in Kansas. All three of these received help in developing grant proposals from the&nbsp;Rural&nbsp;Grocery Initiative. The grants went to the Groundwork Northeast Revitalization Group, a neighborhood coalition in Kansas City, Kansas; the Marmaton Market (as we have previously profiled) and R Family Farms.&nbsp;

The R Family Farms grant will help support the overall construction and costs of rehabilitating the LaDow’s Market historic building into a retail space, adding both refrigerated and dry warehousing capacity. This will accommodate R Family Farms’ growing local meat business as well as creating a permanent aggregation location for other food producers.&nbsp;

As the LaDow’s Market logo states: “The freshest groceries come from the Center.”&nbsp;

By RON WILSON Kansas State UniversityToday let’s go to the center of the country to visit an innovative family which has centered its business on high quality, locally produced fresh food, including their own specialty pork.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Last week we met Kaden and Emily Roush, the owners of R Family Farms near Lebanon - the geographic center of the contiguous United States. The Roushes operate a niche hog production system involving Berkshire pigs. What is the history of Berkshire hogs?&nbsp;According to legend, 300 years ago Oliver Cromwell’s army was encamped in winter quarters at Reading, the county seat of the shire of Berks in England. They discovered the hogs there to be larger than any swine of the time and to produce ham and bacon of remarkable quality. That was the beginning of the Berkshire breed.&nbsp;For years, the royal family kept a large herd of Berkshires at Windsor Castle due to the excellent carcass quality of the hogs. In 1823, the first Berkshires were imported to the U.S. In 1875 the American Berkshire Association was created, becoming the first swine registry to be established in the world.&nbsp;In modern times, Kaden took note of the carcass quality of these hogs. For example, in a summary of tests conducted over a 20-year span at the National Barrow Show in Austin, Minnesota, Berkshire pigs scored highest of all major American pure breeds in sensory quality.&nbsp;R Family Farms began raising Berkshire hogs. The business now specializes in private label production and direct online marketing of their Berkshire pork. R Family Farms is a member of the From the Land of Kansas program of the Kansas Department of Agriculture.&nbsp;During the pandemic, the Roushes were handling more than 1,000 orders per year out of their garage. They were looking for a retail outlet when something happened in their hometown.&nbsp;A grocery store had been operated in Lebanon for many, many years. In the 1970s, it was purchased by the LaDow family and operated as LaDow’s Market for decades.&nbsp;<figure>
