Salina Animal Services Willie is a big sweet boy with a big heart for loving you, a big bark for protecting you, and a big tongue for kissing you.&nbsp; He gets along with dogs, cats, and humans, knows sit, stay, and lay down but he does need work with these commands. He is easily excitable and distracted. He is not kennel trained but a lay down command will have him on his cot all night. He does like to snuggle on the couch, but he can make room for a human and his foster sisters when necessary.

His handlers haven't had him around a lot of kids, but he is calm when meeting them on walks. He can be territorial, he needs to be properly introduced to people. He barked like crazy at the Fed Ex man but did not try to rush the door when I opened it to get the package.

He is excited to meet new dogs and can make some interesting noises when he wants say Hi, this can sound scary at times, but he has always behaved well when we have introduced him to other dogs.&nbsp; Proper introductions are always preferred. A random dog did approach during a walk day, he just sniffed, wagged his tail and continued on when the dog walked away.

All in all Willie is a great dog who needs someone who understands he is a big boy who needs love and training.

Military and veteran appreciation event planned at Central Mall

&nbsp;The K-State Alumni Association board of directors has named Adam Walker, Ed.D., ’04, ’09 the Association’s next president and CEO. He will begin his duties July 24.

“It is an honor to welcome Adam and his family back to K-State. In his time since graduation, he has had a multitude of success in many facets of higher education and alumni engagement. His array of experience coupled with his knowledge and familiarity with K-State makes him an ideal leader to advance the Alumni Association,” said Candace Hart Duncan ’75, chair of the K-State Alumni Association board of directors.

In this role Walker is responsible for overall management and strategic planning of the Alumni Association. Walker is the staff liaison for the Association’s board of directors and serves as secretary of the board. Additionally, he is a part of the Association’s fundraising team.

As president and CEO of the Alumni Association, Walker will serve on the cabinet of K-State President Richard Linton.

“We are thrilled to welcome Adam back to Manhattan to return to his Wildcat roots,” Linton said. “His passion for K-State runs deep, and the Association will be in great hands under his leadership.”

A former student-athlete, Walker was a member of the K-State track and field team. His career culminated with a second-place finish in the weight throw at the Big 12 championships his senior year. Walker earned two degrees from K-State, a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2004 and a master’s degree in counseling and student development in 2009. He completed his Doctor of Education from the University of Memphis. His dissertation entitled "Intercollegiate Athletics Success and the Financial Impact on Universities" was published in&nbsp;The Wall Street Journal, along with publishing several other peer-reviewed research articles thereafter.

“I'm thankful to our board of directors, including Chair Duncan, President Linton, along with the search committee for this remarkable opportunity to return home,” Walker said. “K-State has always held a special place in my heart. From growing up in a Wildcat family in western Kansas, to competing as a student-athlete, to meeting my wife in Anderson Hall and getting married in the Alumni Center.”

Walker brings a breadth of experience in fundraising and alumni relations having served three major universities.

He currently serves as executive associate athletic director for administration at the University of Memphis. In this role he&nbsp;provides leadership, oversight and management to various units within the Memphis Athletic Department, working in all phases of departmental management including communications with coaches, administration, Name, Image and Likeness, game and personnel contracts, corporate sponsorships, scheduling, budget, capital projects and policy and strategic planning, and he manages and directs all external units. He also is the sport administrator for the nationally ranked and prominent Memphis men’s basketball program and men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs. Additionally, Walker serves as the department's liaison to University Advancement and the University of Memphis Alumni Association while working collectively on external engagement for Memphis Athletics.

Under Walker's leadership, the Tiger Scholarship Fund, the development arm of Memphis Athletics, established a fundraising record of more than $24 million in 2022. Walker also continues to teach and research as an adjunct professor in the areas of higher education administration, sports management, business/finance and fundraising.

Prior to joining the Memphis Athletic Department, Walker was senior director of development for the Fogelman College of Business &amp; Economics at the University of Memphis. During his tenure at the Fogelman College of Business, Walker was part of a team which completed the university's first comprehensive campaign, “Empowering the Dream,” which totaled over $256 million in donations.

Walker also previously worked as associate athletic director for development at the University of Central Florida. During his tenure, he fundraised several six- and seven-figure gifts for athletics.

Walker began his professional career at K-State as an admissions representative. He then transitioned into a role as a development officer for the Carl. R. Ice College of Engineering. While working for the College of Engineering, he was part of a team that completed the “Changing Lives Campaign,” which raised more than $528 million, including over $90 million to engineering.

Walker and his wife, Rebecca, have two daughters, Addison Kay and Landree Adele. Rebecca, also a K-Stater, earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations in 2008.

“I'm excited to elevate K-State and our Association to the next level with our proud alumni, students, university, friends, and extended community,” Walker said. “As a life member, I recognize how our K-State Alumni Association plays a crucial role in advocating for all Wildcats, and I look forward to furthering that mission, growing our base, and enhancing these connections together.”

K-State Alumni Association names next president and CEO

In festival tradition, a little bit of rain and a slight breeze helped drive crowds to the 2023 Smoky Hill River Festival taking place in Oakdale Park.&nbsp;

On Thursday evening 17 bands appeared on the Eric Stein Stage for the 37th Annual SM Hanson Festival Jam.

&nbsp;5:45 p.m. Uptown Funk Salina Central High School: Downtown Funk. The funk/pop group has 10 performers under the guidance of Guillermo Rodriguez, Central band director.&nbsp;

6 p.m. Keep the Change This band opened the show last year. A project of Steve Hanson – Abilene high school students of Steve Hanson and Dean Kranzler, this six-piece band will play rock to start our show.

6:15 p.m. FedUp A four-piece band from Salina playing rock. This band played the Jam in 2015 and 2022. The Salina-based band has been together for 10 years.

6:30 p.m. The Radicles A Salina band playing a mix of eclectic rock. A four-piece band you will enjoy.

6:45 p.m. Don Wagner &amp; Friends Don and friends have played the Jam previously – always entertaining with a mix of country, rock, blues, and folk music.

7 p.m. Jon’Nea Soul New to the Jam – this Wichita-based four-piece band will play R&amp;B and soul music. There is a local connection to Salina. We are excited to hear them play at the 37th SM Hanson Festival Jam.

7:15 p.m. Ghost Town Revival First time at the Jam for this five-piece band. A Salina band playing classic rock and blues. Some of these guys have done this before.

7:30 p.m. Lix A band from the past – older now and yet... This original Salina three-piece band has added a bass player – so make that four-piece. These guys will play classic rock and blues.

7:45 p.m. The Opinions Forty years ago (so they say), these guys formed their band in Salina. Now, they have real jobs and live mostly in the Kansas City area. They played last year and we are glad to have them again.

8 p.m. Soul Preachers A Salina three-piece band – they have played the Jam previously, but it has been a few years. They play Roger Miller death shred metal – with Eric Copeland on drums.

8:15 p.m. Hey Radio A Wichita-based band – these guys lit it up in 2019 and 2022. We look forward to their mix of skate punk and pop (with a little energy).

8:30 p.m. Starslinger New to the Festival Jam, this three-piece band from Hays America has been playing dates around the Midwest for seven years. Get ready for alternative/psych/space rock – that’s right!

8:45 p.m. Dune Buggy These guys have played before. This Pet Project consists of five members playing together for several years. Their quick set will include rock and pop.

9 p.m. Northcutt A crowd favorite – five-piece Salina band playing red-dirt country/rock/blues.

9:15 p.m. Bootleg Mercy This four-piece band rocks! One magazine said “Kick-A__-Rock” from Kansas. These guys have multiple rock music award nominations. Revamped lineup since their last Jam in 2016 – something to see!

9:30 Steve Hanson &amp; Co. The founder – this is their 37th time at the Jam. Always a variety – always great.

9:45 p.m. The Blades This band has so many great players – it is really hard to count all of the people on stage! We hope to have enough room on stage.

 </figure>BY SALINA POSTIn festival tradition, a little bit of rain and a slight breeze helped drive crowds to the 2023 Smoky Hill River Festival taking place in Oakdale Park.&nbsp;On Thursday evening 17 bands appeared on the Eric Stein Stage for the 37th Annual SM Hanson Festival Jam.<h2>Festival Jam&nbsp;</h2><figure>

A project of Steve Hanson – Abilene high school students of Steve Hanson and Dean Kranzler, this six-piece band will play rock to start our show.6:15 p.m. FedUp A four-piece band from Salina playing rock. This band played the Jam in 2015 and 2022. The Salina-based band has been together for 10 years.6:30 p.m. The Radicles A Salina band playing a mix of eclectic rock. A four-piece band you will enjoy.6:45 p.m. Don Wagner &amp; Friends Don and friends have played the Jam previously – always entertaining with a mix of country, rock, blues, and folk music.7 p.m. Jon’Nea Soul New to the Jam – this Wichita-based four-piece band will play R&amp;B and soul music. There is a local connection to Salina. We are excited to hear them play at the 37th SM Hanson Festival Jam.7:15 p.m. Ghost Town Revival First time at the Jam for this five-piece band. A Salina band playing classic rock and blues. Some of these guys have done this before.7:30 p.m. Lix A band from the past – older now and yet... This original Salina three-piece band has added a bass player – so make that four-piece. These guys will play classic rock and blues.7:45 p.m. The Opinions Forty years ago (so they say), these guys formed their band in Salina. Now, they have real jobs and live mostly in the Kansas City area. They played last year and we are glad to have them again.8 p.m. Soul Preachers A Salina three-piece band – they have played the Jam previously, but it has been a few years. They play Roger Miller death shred metal – with Eric Copeland on drums.8:15 p.m. Hey Radio A Wichita-based band – these guys lit it up in 2019 and 2022. We look forward to their mix of skate punk and pop (with a little energy).8:30 p.m. Starslinger New to the Festival Jam, this three-piece band from Hays America has been playing dates around the Midwest for seven years. Get ready for alternative/psych/space rock – that’s right!8:45 p.m. Dune Buggy These guys have played before. This Pet Project consists of five members playing together for several years. This week's 'KINA Saturday Morning' lineup

Salina Area Chamber of Commerce&nbsp; The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce announced a new addition to their staff Friday morning, Jaclyn Crow.

Crow was selected for the position of Economic &amp; Workforce Development Director. The position was previously held by Renee Duxler, current chamber president and CEO.

Her primary responsibilities will include overseeing the chamber’s workforce development and business retention and expansion activities, working with the area secondary and post-secondary schools, and providing support and assistance to our employers. She will also be overseeing the entrepreneurial programming like Project OPEN, Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, and the Charlie Walker Pitch Challenge. 

Crow is a former middle school educator and was most recently at South Middle School the last three years. Jaclyn also coached middle school basketball and high school softball during that time. She moved to Salina from Topeka, and currently resides here with her husband, Cole.

The National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) has announced Salina Public Schools (SPS) as the recipient of a 2023 NSPRA Gold Medallion (the highest award level). The award recognizes superior school public relations campaigns grounded in strategic communication best practices.

Salina Public Schools’&nbsp;Greatness Grows Here&nbsp;marketing communications campaign is one of eight selected out of 66 nationwide entries. The campaign showcased the many ways that SPS provides unmatched opportunities and whole-child education. The campaign was created in collaboration with CEL, a marketing company, and lead strategist Kristin Magette, APR, currently assistant executive director of communication and engagement at Kansas Association of School Boards.

“This campaign was built on what we heard from our community,” explained Linn Exline, superintendent. Focus groups of community members, staff, students and district leadership provided feedback that informed the campaign, updated the district’s brand and visual identity and more.&nbsp;

The award will be presented at the NSPRA conference in July.

Join in the celebration of summer with the Smoky Valley Arts and Folklife Center's&nbsp; Garden Tour on Sunday, June 25, 2023 from 4 to 7 p.m.&nbsp;

The Garden Tour features the following beautiful and unique Lindsborg lawns:

Vern &amp; Linda Hubalek, 1222 Sapphire Lane - The Hubaleks have been working on their lawn and garden since building their home in 2012. The flower beds feature heirloom plantings from family, friends, and locations around McPherson County and the buffalo grass lawn reduces water usage. For years, Linda has enjoyed growing zinnias for the residents at Bethany Home.&nbsp;Featured artist: Verne Hubalek

Ed &amp; Jane Radatz, 729 N. 1st – Ed has been gardening for nearly 50 years and says success is never a sure thing. His 4,000 square foot garden features a variety of vegetables including broccoli, peas, tomatoes, peppers and many others. He also has a wildflower bed that provides a pop of color.&nbsp;Featured artist: Ron Michael

Liz Strnad, 310 N. 3rd – An admitted ‘plant hoarder’ Liz has created a backyard oasis with inviting areas on her deck and side patio. Her garden is an example of xeriscape landscaping, maximizing containers to create conversation pockets throughout her yard.&nbsp;Featured artist: Darren.

 Marsha &amp; Brad Howe, 132 S. 2nd (use Grant St. entrance) – The Howe’s yard has undergone a magnificent transformation over the span of 27 and a half years, blossoming into a true oasis of natural beauty. Throughout their journey, they have thoughtfully integrated the works of talented local artists and skilled craftsmen into their captivating landscape designs. &nbsp;Featured artist: Debbie Wagoner

Bill &amp; Sharon Christopher, 430 W. State – An eclectic yard that has something for everyone including perennials in the front yard, planting boxes with vegetables in the side yard, and trees and sitting areas in the backyard. Several plants were transplanted from Colorado when the Christophers moved to Lindsborg.&nbsp;Featured artist: Lloyd Rohr

&nbsp;The Smoky Valley Arts &amp; Folklife Center (SVAFC) will also host its closing reception for the Community Arts &amp; Crafts Exhibition on June 25 from 2-4 p.m. at its center located at 114 1/2 S. Main Street in Lindsborg, Kansas.&nbsp;

Last year’s exhibition was a lively mix of traditional to contemporary art offering a glimpse at the unique ways in which each person pursues self-expression, according to SVAFC chair Emily Howe. The center featured the works of nearly 40 area artists and craftsmen during the exhibition.

“The exhibition is a fitting tribute to the creative spirit of our community and the artisans among us,” Howe said. “I expect this year’s exhibition will be just as diverse and interesting.”

Tickets – Tickets can be<a href="https://smokyvalleyartsandfolklifecenter.org/events/"> purchased online </a>for $25 until the day of the tour and picked up at SVAFC on Sunday, June 25 – the day of the tour until 5 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the tour for $30 at SVAFC. You will be asked for your ticket at each home.

● Photography and video are not permitted without asking the homeowner.

●  There may be uneven surfaces and stairs at some of the locations.

 ●  Bathrooms at the tour locations are not open to the public. 

●  Respect the homeowner’s privacy as noted on signage at the property.

 ●  In case of inclement weather, the tour will be rescheduled to&nbsp;Jul 9, 2023.

&nbsp;The Garden Tour is not recommended for children under 12 years old. Parking at each of the homes will be on the street and walking distances will vary.

Human trafficking is defined as the criminal activity of holding another person for the purposes of exploitation through forced labor and sex trafficking. Many experts view human trafficking as the second greatest criminal enterprise in the world, second only to the illegal sale of drugs.  Even here in Kansas, men, women, and children are forced to work for long hours under deplorable conditions for little or no pay without the freedom to leave.&nbsp;

The Saline County based "The Granny Brigade" is set to host an informational meeting on June 20 at 7 p.m. to start a locally lead discussion about the issue of human trafficking.&nbsp;

The event will be lead by Sue Alexander, Solomon, and will be held at the Carver Center,&nbsp;315 North 2nd Street, in Salina.

Rosemary Mai, a member of the "Granny Brigade" told Salina Post that after she and others in her group attended an informational meeting in Abilene, they knew something similar was needed for the Salina community.

Law enforcement professionals, including Sheriff Roger Soldan, Police Chief CJ Wise and a lieutenant from the Salina Police Department, will also contribute to the discussion. 

Event organizers noted the event is open to the&nbsp; public and citizens are encouraged to come together and be part of a grassroots effort to combat human trafficking in Kansas and the Salina area.&nbsp;

An 83-year-old woman in the 300 block of Sunset Drive, identified as Margaret Bosch, was the victim of a shot fired into her house sometime between June 5 at 10 p.m. and June 6 at 5:30 p.m. 

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Bosch was retrieving her trash cart from her driveway when she noticed a hole in the siding on the west side of her house. 

Upon further inspection, she recognized it to possibly be a bullet hole. Police were notified and officers located an unknown caliber slug from a bullet inside the hole.

A witness in the area reported hearing what she thought was a firecracker at around 10 p.m. on the fifth. 

It is unclear at this time whether this incident was targeted or random.

LINDSBORG, Kan. —&nbsp;Celebrate a Swedish tradition in the heartland&nbsp;in Lindsborg with the annual and traditional <a href="https://www.visitlindsborg.com/midsummers-festival">Midsummer’s Festival on June 17</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“In Sweden, they celebrate the longest day of the year, which is considered the summer solstice,” Geneva Hay, Lindsborg Midsummer's Festival president, said. “Basically, it's the Swedish festival that is celebrated worldwide. It welcomes the arrival of the summer solstice, and with this, Lindsborg is considered to be ‘Little Sweden.’ We've got a lot of Swedish heritage, that’s kind of what our town revolves around, and so we take a lot of those different events and celebrations and things along that line, and we&nbsp;incorporate them into our community here.”&nbsp;

This event is held on the Third Saturday in June.&nbsp;

“With the Midsummer's Festival, we designed it to be very fun-filled and a day for the entire family. It ranges anywhere from fun runs in the morning to <a href="https://irp.cdn-website.com/d4211c19/files/uploaded/Kubb%20Registration%20Form%202023.pdf">kubb&nbsp;tournaments</a>. We have those type of events, we bring in dancers from different locations that come in, we have a couple groups of Vikings that come in from out-of-state that do Viking reenactments because we are a very Viking-centric location,” Hay said. “We bring those groups in and we highlight a lot of our different talents, a lot of our different musical talent, craft talents, food demonstration talent, anything that we can in that festive setup.”&nbsp;

There are two sets of Swedish folk dancers. One troupe is made up of high school freshmen through seniors. The other is an adult dance troupe. Both troupes are very rooted in Swedish tradition. &nbsp;

According to Hay, the Midsummer’s Festival piggybacks off another event held in October, Svensk&nbsp;Hyllningsfest. Svensk&nbsp;Hyllningsfest is held every other year. &nbsp;

“This is just strictly a one-day thing that we do, but the festival itself is free,” Hay said. “There are some activities that you can be a part of that do charge, but to get into the festival, to be able to look at the demonstrations, to be able to watch the entertainment, embark in all of the different activities, the kids activities, things like that, there's no charge to it.”&nbsp;

The Midsummer’s Festival is slated to begin with a fun-run event at 8 a.m. &nbsp;

“From 8:30 to 10:30 at night, the finale of it all is a free swim that the city of Lindsborg, through our request, has opened, since it's all at the park next to the swimming pool,” Hay said. “We open it up so anybody that wants to cool off that day can go for a free swim for two hours.”&nbsp;

“This year we’ve actually got some neat, exciting things going on. We’re doing a stinky fish-eating contest, we’ve got a section in there where audience participation can come up and tell jokes,” Hay said. “Then in the evening, everything basically proceeds to another section that’s at the park, which is actually owned by our Old Mill Association, called Heritage Square, and that is where we kind of do our finalization of the dance. We raise our really large Midsummer’s pole at that time, that’s been decorated all beautifully, and they dance around to finish off the festivities.” &nbsp;

Celebration like the Midsummer’s Festival are more than just culturally significant to the people of Lindsborg and their Swedish heritage. &nbsp;

“The reason we do these festivals is because of our heritage. People look for those things, people come to this town, and they look for those unique things,” Hay said. “They look for the kindness, they look for the downhome root of the Swedish and the different things that go on.” &nbsp;

Lindsborg Midsummer's Festival celebrates Swedish Heritage

The Salina Public Schools Board of Education and NEA-Salina met for their second and final round of contract negotiations for the 2023-2024 school year.&nbsp;The teams agreed to the following changes:

- Added $1500 to the base salary.&nbsp;- Agreed to pay step and movement.&nbsp; - Added school counselors to the group of staff who receive special salary provisions.&nbsp; - Added two days of leave designated for bereavement.&nbsp; - Added five days of parental leave.&nbsp; - Added procedures to better facilitate the classroom discipline process.&nbsp; - Removed the sunset provision on the ability to work from home on teacher workdays&nbsp;.&nbsp; - Added $20/month to the employer health insurance contribution. - Excluded funerals from the blackout day provision for use of PTO.&nbsp; - Added procedures to allow NEA-Salina more efficient access to the bargaining unit information.

- Made clarifications to the longevity provisions.&nbsp; - Created a joint committee to study and make recommendations on lunch schedules for teachers during the 23-24 school year

Now that the teams have settled, next steps will be teacher ratification and a vote of the full Board of Education.

Kansas Highway Patrol The newest class of Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers graduated from the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy on Wednesday, June 7 in Salina, Kansas.

GKHP Recruit Class #65 began 23 weeks of training on Wednesday, January 4 at the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy. The Patrol's ten newest Troopers will enter the field training phase of the training program.

Trooper Dylan Anderson, K-507, Class 65 graduate of the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy, will be stationed in Saline County.&nbsp;

During the ceremony on Wednesday Trooper Anderson’s father, Chris Anderson, placed his badge on him for the first time.

Anderson’s hometown is Leonardville, Kansas.

New Troopers will be stationed in the following counties:
