KSRE Jacob Schmeidler began serving as the Central Kansas District 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent on June 12. The Central Kansas Extension District (CKD) has offices in Minneapolis and Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; Schmeidler’s primary office is in Salina.&nbsp;

Schmeidler will provide leadership in the development and delivery of educational programs for school-aged youth in Saline and Ottawa Counties.&nbsp; His focus will be to support the 250 4-H members throughout the district, coordinate out-of-school programs, engage with other educators on school enrichment activities, collaborate with over 125 volunteers, and create innovative opportunities with new and existing community partners.

Schmeidler has an extensive 4-H background and was involved in youth leadership at the local, state and national levels while growing up in Hays, KS.&nbsp; He is a graduate of Hutchinson Community College as well as Kansas State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Animal Science &amp; Industry with a Communications and Marketing Option.&nbsp; Schmeidler interned with the K-State Youth Livestock Program in Manhattan and has been a freelance cattle service and sales preparation worker for several years.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Many home gardeners understand a sad truth about the corn earworm: the little critter loves sweet corn just as much as humans do.

It creates a yearly battle to fight back the pesky insect. The adult corn earworm moth lays eggs on developing corn silks and as soon as the eggs hatch, larval cornworms go to work.

“Feeding starts at the tip of the ear and works down,” said Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham.

Corn earworms feed on each other as well as the corn, so even though multiple eggs may hatch on an ear, usually only one is found in each ear, Upham said.

Protecting sweet corn from earworms comes with a couple time-dependent challenges. As corn silks continue to grow, any new silk that is left untreated can be targeted by earworms. Upham recommends applying insecticides every 2 to 3 days in order to be effective, “especially in early July, when peak flight of these moths usually appear,” he said.

Additionally, adult earworm moths prefer juicy silks instead of dry silks, so insecticide only needs to be applied the first two weeks of silking.

What insecticides are most effective? Upham recommends spinosad, on organic insecticide, for home gardeners.

Another organic choice is mineral oil or other light horticultural oils.

To treat the corn, fill a medicine dropper ½ to ¾ full of the oil, then apply inside the silk end of the corn’s ear – where the tips of the silk begin to wilt and brown. Upham said the oil will kill any earworms present and prevent more earworms from entering the ear.

However, he said, take note that applying oil before the silk has begun to brown may lead to partially unfilled ears, as the oil will interfere with pollination.

Upham and his colleagues in K-State’s Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly Horticulture Newsletter with tips for maintaining home landscapes. Battle begins to save sweet corn from earworm

This week's 'KINA Saturday Morning' lineup

An ATM was damaged at a local bank after someone attempted to pull it apart yesterday morning.&nbsp;

Salina Police&nbsp;Sergeant Tonniges said this morning that officers were dispatched to the Sunflower Bank branch at&nbsp;3025 Cortland Circle, at 5:30 a.m.&nbsp;Wednesday&nbsp;after a&nbsp;passerby noticed a truck hooked up to an ATM.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When they arrived they found a&nbsp;green Dodge 2500 pickup with a tow chain hooked around the rear axle of the pickup truck and connected to the severely damaged ATM.

Tonniges said the people who attempted to steal the ATM did gain access to its cash compartment.

"There was some cash taken, however I'm not going to give you the undisclosed amount, but there's about $50,000 worth of damage to the ATM," Tonniges said.&nbsp;

It was later discovered that Dodge Ram&nbsp; pickup was stolen and that was stolen from the nearby 2000 block of Caywood Drive. The legal owner of the vehicle told officers that the vehicle had been parked in their driveway and was taken sometime after 1 a.m.

Tonniges said despite the Dodge being locked, those who stole the vehicle gained entry into the vehicle and punched the ignition.&nbsp;

Tonniges said the department is conducting a video footage canvas of the surrounding area in an effort to locate surveillance footage.

During their investigation Salina Police officers also uncovered another attempted vehicle theft in the 2800 block of Melanie Lane. This incident involved a blue 2005 F-250 pickup truck belonging to a resident of Salina.&nbsp;

 South Salina ATM broken into using stolen vehicle

The Salina Police Department announced this afternoon via Facebook that the department was recently made aware of an incident that occurred in downtown Salina on Tuesday.

According to the Salina Police Department, on Tuesday between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. in the 100 block of South Santa Fe Avenue, a Salina resident was threatened with a knife by an unknown person. Salina Police noted that the incident occurred while the victim was entering their vehicle.

Although the incident occurred two days ago, the information was reported to Salina Police today.&nbsp;

 Detectives are currently investigating the report, to include reviewing video surveillance. Anyone with additional information on this event is asked to contact the Salina Police Department Detective Division. 

If you are a victim or witness to a crime please contact the Police Department when the crime occurs or as soon as possible.  This will assist in the solvability of the crime.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Glasco public water supply system located in Cloud County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

-Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water

-Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker

-If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. -Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. -Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested.

-Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on June 22 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure due to valve replacement. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

A rural Saline County man lost a combine to fire Wednesday morning south of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan&nbsp; said this morning that deputies and personnel from Rural Fire District No. 2 were sent to the 1900 block of E. Hedberg Road at approximately 6:19 a.m. Wednesday for the report of a combine on fire in a field.

The combine's owner is Scott Peterson, 48, of rural Saline County. No known cause of the fire was identified, but Soldan did say it was highly likely the fire started in the combine's engine compartment.

Some wheat stubble was burnt in the area of the combine, but no wheat was lost because there was no wheat in the combine, Soldan said.

 The 1988 John Deere combine, valued at $15,000, had been parked overnight and was deemed a total loss due to the extensive damage caused by the fire.&nbsp;

A couple from&nbsp;Minneapolis was injured in a two-vehicle accident in south Salina Wednesday morning.&nbsp;

John Campbell, 48, and Dana Campbell, 46,&nbsp; of Minneapolis, were westbound on Water Well Road just before 7:20 a.m. when their grey 2018&nbsp;Toyota Camry was struck from behind by a&nbsp;2010 Ford Taurus driven by&nbsp;Chayle&nbsp;Kuhn, 25,&nbsp;Assaria.&nbsp;

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that the Campbells, who are employed by Crestwood Design,&nbsp;601 E. Water Well Road, were struck prior to turning into the businesses' driveway.&nbsp;

Soldan also mentioned that Kuhn had not seen the Campbells vehicle stopped due to heavy rain.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; The Campbells did sustain injuries during the accident and were&nbsp;transported by Salina EMS to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;

These dark patterns also made it hard for people to cancel their Prime subscriptions by making them hunt for the right place to cancel online, and then click through complicated extra pages to cancel. Often, consumers would call Amazon’s customer service, only to be referred back to the website to cancel, making the process even more frustrating.

Kansas Highway Patrol It’s a busy time for farmers in Kansas, with wheat harvest underway. The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to use more caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines, and other implements.

“With wheat harvest season soon beginning, you’ll see heavy farm implement and truck traffic moving in and out of Kansas wheat fields and on to Kansas roadways. It’s important to remember that traveling around these vehicles requires extra caution. By taking your time and giving farm and heavy equipment plenty of room on the roadways, you can help ensure that yourself, your loved ones, and our Kansas farmers all make it home safely,” said Captain Candice Breshears, KHP Public Information Officer.

Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than the lane of traffic, so extra room should be allowed when sharing the road. Caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on busy rural roads with unmarked intersections.

Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re there.

Most farmers regularly check for vehicles behind them, however, most of their time must be spent looking ahead to stay on the road and watch for oncoming traffic. Implements are very loud, hindering their ability to hear your vehicle.

Don’t pass unless you can see clearly ahead of both your vehicle and the equipment you are passing. If there are curves or hills blocking your view, wait until you can clearly visualize the area you are passing in. You should not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone,” even if you are stuck behind a farm vehicle. Do not pass if you are within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel.

When a farm vehicle pulls to the right side of the road, it does not mean it is turning right&nbsp;or&nbsp;allowing you to pass.

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a burglary have made an arrest.

On May 19, a residential burglary was reported in the 3600 Block of Deer Road in Dickinson County, according to Undersheriff Jeff Vaughan. The victim reported over $3,000 worth of property was stolen.

The investigation led to a search warrant being obtained for a residence in Salina.&nbsp; With assistance from the Salina Police Department, officers recovered some of the property reported stolen from Deer Road.

On June 13, a warrant was issued through the Dickinson County District Court for 40-year-old Brian Dickerman in reference to the burglary.

On Tuesday, a Saline County Deputy made contact with Dickerman and placed him under arrest for the Dickinson County warrant. 

Dickerman is being held in the Saline County Jail on requested charges of&nbsp; &nbsp;burglary, theft, and criminal damage to property, according Vaughan

Salina man jailed for alleged rural home burglary

It’s no fun being between a rock and a hard place, but that’s the spot Kansas public schools are in&nbsp;today. &nbsp;It’s an unfortunate circumstance begging for action by the Legislature and Kansas State Board of Education.&nbsp;

The two major problems facing schools currently are: &nbsp;1) teacher shortages and 2) low student achievement. Both have plagued Kansas schools for at least 20 years.

Kansas student achievement on the most recent National Assessment of Student Progress reading and math exams declined again—a situation that can’t improve without schools fully staffed with well-prepared teachers.&nbsp;

The rock/hard-place dilemma is that in the past, the answer to increasing the teacher workforce was to relax the rules for qualifying teachers.&nbsp;

Following precedent, Kansas started down the traditional&nbsp;road again last year by creating an emergency substitute teacher license. Instead of requiring a minimum&nbsp;of&nbsp;60 hours&nbsp;earned&nbsp;college credit, substitute teacher qualifications are now holding a high school diploma and being at least age 18.&nbsp;

To speed national workforce development, the U.S. Department of Labor is offering funding for apprenticeship programs in a range of occupations including teacher preparation.&nbsp;

These apprentice programs pair accelerated on-line post-secondary education with on-site training. The programs are proving effective for technical careers, and so far, 16 states willreceive teacher education funding.&nbsp;KSDE is looking into this as well as creating its own teacher apprentice program.&nbsp;

The best programs place teacher candidates who have completed 60 hours college general education into public schools with 15 to 20 hours paid work per week as paraprofessionals, who assist a teacher, usually with small group activities.&nbsp;

Teacher candidates complete requirements for the bachelor’s degree that include practice teaching experiences in multiple classroom levels with in-person teacher candidate evaluation by credentialed supervisors.&nbsp;

The least effective apprenticeship programs allow 18 year-olds to work as paraprofessionals as little as five hours per week or become full-time classroom teachers with little college-level preparation. The apprenticeship can occur in a single classroom for the full four years of college study which may be shortened through accelerated, eight-week, all on-line courses. The apprentices’ classroom teaching may be with small-groups only, in one grade only with candidate teaching&nbsp;evaluation&nbsp;reduced to student-produced, 15-minute videos observed by on-line reviewers.

COVID taught us that “all online, all the time” is not the best way for students to learn and it follows, also not the best for teacher candidates. Pre-service teachers also need experience through research based, faculty-led roundtables to learn the wide-range of student needs, develop problem solving abilities and practice communication skills—all difficult to accomplish in an exclusively online, one class in one school environment.&nbsp;

If properly organized, paid apprenticeship for teacher candidates can reduce&nbsp;their&nbsp;college costs, give pre-service teachers valuable hands-on experience and speed-up preparation without abbreviated, fully online courses or candidate’s teaching skills evaluated remotely.&nbsp;

Kansans might also consider that in 2023, the median teacher starting salary in Kansas is $40,699 while the average starting salary for college graduates nationally is $58,860.&nbsp;

Kansas ranked 36 nationally in public school salaries in 2021.&nbsp;

The median yearly income of one earner in Kansas is $51,957.

The state projects a $3.2 billion cash surplus by June 2024 and nearly $1 billion more in the rainy day fund.&nbsp;

Raising teacher salaries may be the fastest and most effective way to solve the teacher shortage.

INSIGHT: Solving Kansas’ teacher shortage problem

How big is your museum? Today let’s visit a museum that is five miles long and 100 feet wide.

What in the world is that kind of museum? The answer is, it’s like a moving museum - a historic excursion train operating on railroad track in rural Kansas.

Ross Boelling is president and general manager of this remarkable train known as the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad. Thanks to railroad volunteer and retired K-State department head Steve Smethers for the following information.

The Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad operates on railroad track that had once belonged to the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad, which began service in 1886. The Rock Island operated successfully for many years. It was the lifeline of a burgeoning regional agribusiness industry, but after nearly a century, the company was in financial trouble.

The Rock Island took bankruptcy in 1980 and the MKT took title. In 1988, the Union Pacific acquired the lines, but company executives decided not to use the portion through Abilene.

Two local men decided to try to save the Rock Island legacy in Dickinson County. Joe Minnick and the late Fred Schmidt approached the Union Pacific and proposed to acquire the Rock Island rail between Abilene and Woodbine, Kansas.

The two railfans had the backing of the community, including some banks in the county. The banks agreed to loan money for the purchase of track between Enterprise and the rural community of Woodbine, population 157 people. Now, that’s rural.

The Abilene to Enterprise leg of the line was donated and that became the railroad route. The non-profit Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad Association was formed in 1993, so it is celebrating 30 years. In 1994, the A&amp;SV operated its first excursion train from Abilene to Enterprise and back.

Those now include a century-old Santa Fe steam locomotive, a first-generation diesel switch engine, and vintage passenger and freight cars.Among those are a 1902 MKT wooden passenger car, a 1930s vintage Chicago and Northwestern passenger coach, a gondola car made for the Missouri Pacific in June 1951, and a Union Pacific caboose.Today the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad offers regular excursion trains, private charters, school field trip excursions and dinner trains for a 90-minute roundtrip journey between Abilene and Enterprise, near a historic grist mill. Excursion trains run on weekends from May through September, with dinner trains scheduled every weekend in June and July.The "Great Pumpkin Express" runs in October, featuring Charlie Brown and Snoopy. "Cowtown Santa Express" runs late November through Christmas Eve.Riding the train is like immersing oneself in a mobile museum. “A&amp;SV passengers don’t just ride the rails,” Smethers said. “They experience train operations firsthand by touring the engines; observing crew members doing their jobs; asking questions of volunteer engineers, conductors, brakemen, firemen and car hosts.”For a special fee, passengers can ride in the Union Pacific caboose or the cab of the engines.Passengers can learn history, see the sites, and enjoy the dining car. For 2023, AS&amp;V Railroad is offering a special Dining Car Heritage Series. Using area restaurants and caterers, the heritage series will offer cuisine that passengers would have experienced on the dining cars of four railroads with ties to local history. Those are the M-K-T, the Santa Fe, the Rock Island, and the Chicago North Western.Smethers describes the train as an experiential “museum on wheels,” 5.5 miles long and 100 feet wide.
