Late Thursday evening, the Salina Poice Department responded to two young children who were taken from protective custody by 21-year-old Salinan Katherine Lynn, their mother, after she violated the custody order.

SPD sergeant Kyle Tonniges said officers arrested Lynn earlier in the day, leading police officers to take the two young children, aged 2 and 3, into police custody and eventually to a home in Salina.

At 10 p.m., Lynn appeared at the 1500 block of Dover Drive and "walked right in the house without any permission, took her kids and went home," Tonniges said.&nbsp;

Tonniges said officers located Lynn and took the children back into police custody. Requested charges for Lynn include aggravated burglary, two counts of violating a protection order, two of interference with parental custody, and two of child endangerment.

The Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair takes place on Saturday, September 23 in and around the Smoky Hill Museum at 211 W. Iron Avenue in downtown Salina. The Street Fair has no entry cost and is a day to celebrate the Old West with a chili cook-off, music, activities, food vendors and, of course, the museum itself.

The Old West family fun starts with a parade down Santa Fe at 10:00 am. Then down and around the Museum at 211 W Iron Avenue, there will be an Old West chuck wagon, horseshoe tossing, roping, archery, chili cook-off, historic demonstrators, free make-and-take crafts, caricaturists, Color Me Crazy airbrush tattoos and more.

The public tasting and voting for the chili cook-off will be from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. and it only costs $2 to sample chili from eight booths. The People’s Choice award and best decorated booth winners will be announced at 2:00 p.m. on the main stage.

Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair, travel back to The Old West Sept. 23

GREAT BEND&nbsp;– A host of butterflies, bees and bugs will all be in residence at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center’s (592 NE K 156 Hwy, Great Bend) annual Butterfly Festival from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 23. 

In addition to a variety of family-friendly activities, “The Instars,” Steve Craig and Amy Short, will present their “Butterfly Magic” show – a melding of humor and magic that illustrates the astonishing butterfly life cycle.

“This year promises to be a much better year for the monarch butterfly migration, as millions undertake their annual fall flight to Mexico,” said Pam Martin, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks education specialist.

Nets and tags will be available for those who want to capture and tag monarch butterflies ­– a critical citizen-science effort that helps track monarch migration activity. 

To do this, participants head out into the flower-filled fields and shelter belt around KWEC to spot monarchs, with tagging leaders stationed along the trail to help with the tagging process. For the past several years, monarchs tagged at the event were recovered at three Mexico roost sites.

New this year, a grant from the Kansas Wildscape Foundation’s Outdoors for Kansas (OK) Kids program is being used to sponsor a wide selection of outdoor-related prizes for youth attendees. Prizes include insect nets and carriers, field guides, nature vests, t-shirts, exploration kits, and more.&nbsp;

In addition to butterflies, festival guests can also expect to see walking stick insects, caterpillars, chrysalises, fluorescing scorpions; and enjoy fun activities like crafting and games. Plan to spend the morning, as door prizes will be presented around noon, along with free milkweed plants (one per family while supplies last). Then, stick around to visit the butterfly and pollinator garden to get wildflower planting ideas to implement at home.

This article focuses on supporting the well-being of Kansas farmers and ranchers and focuses on understanding mental exhaustion.&nbsp;

Understanding this condition of mental exhaustion is not new. However, unless you have truly experienced extreme tiredness or fatigue, you may ask, why am I reading this article? 

During my military days in the United States Army, I found myself nearest to this state of mental exhaustion. I was trying to adjust to the ways of the army, sleep schedules, military food, environments, and increased physical fitness that stretched my well-being. Well, that was nearly&nbsp;34 years ago, and yes, I managed to survive and complete years of service as a Supply Sergeant and Unit Armorer. 

That lived experience was my introduction to mental exhaustion. Sharing this information about mental exhaustion can include physical and emotional symptoms: anger, sadness, and a sense of powerlessness. Furthermore, you may struggle with your work performance and overall productivity. However, chronic or long-term stress can play a role in mental exhaustion. 

Think back to the last time you felt exhausted after a long day. Your body may have been tired, but your brain probably didn’t feel too sharp, either. Maybe all you felt like doing was a low-key activity. Conversely, mental exhaustion can affect physical performance, making exercise and other tasks that require endurance feel considerably more physically taxing and demanding.

Simply put, mental exhaustion can happen when your brain receives too much stimulation or maintains an intense level of activity without rest. You might notice mental exhaustion, sometimes called mental fatigue, if you:

• Often work or study for long hours with limited breaks.

• Spend time each day dealing with overwhelming responsibilities.

• Devote a lot of energy each day to thinking through problems, worries, or other sources of stress.

It’s not uncommon to feel physically fatigued from time to time, and the same holds true for mental fatigue. Mental fatigue can affect your ability to think, solve problems, or process and regulate emotions. Eventually, it can lead to challenges in your daily life and relationships.

Ongoing mental exhaustion can begin to affect your everyday activities and behavior. You might find yourself constantly putting off tasks at work or around the house.

Mental exhaustion can happen to anyone and can’t always be avoided. Taking a few preemptive steps can help lower your chances of experiencing ongoing mental fatigue.

You might be mentally exhausted if you work or live in a high-stress environment. Being in a high-pressure job can undoubtedly contribute to this phenomenon. Furthermore, you are at an increased risk of developing unwanted symptoms if you lack support, healthy coping skills, and proper stress management skills. 

Mental exhaustion can have serious consequences — not just for your physical and emotional health. A physician or therapist can offer more guidance on treatments for mental fatigue, resources to cope with stress, and other supportive strategies.

KSRE: What is mental exhaustion?

As the Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus settles into the new academic year, the campus continues to elevate the goal of developing global leaders on the campus. 

K-State Salina now offers a new leadership course taught in collaboration with K-State's Staley School of Leadership. All incoming students participate in this introductory course, ensuring leadership competencies are developed for all K-State Salina students. Students who complete the course will also have the option to continue their education in leadership and obtain a minor in leadership studies.

The leadership studies minor is a complement to any degree option. During these courses, students will work toward personal leadership development and a practical framework to further self-awareness, values and purpose. The academic minor, through the Staley School of Leadership, will also help K-State Salina students become involved in the Salina community with service projects in support of organizations working on community challenges.

"Preparing our students for life after graduation and ensuring that they are career-ready is a huge emphasis on this campus," said Kyle Chamberlin, assistant dean of student life at K-State Salina. "With the competencies and quality instruction that the Staley School of Leadership is known for, we are expecting future graduates of K-State Salina to be not only career-ready but also ready to be leaders in their respective industries the moment they accept their first jobs."

Faculty, staff and administration are also getting the opportunity to practice their leadership skills by completing leadership education through the Kansas Leadership Center's Leadership Transformation Grant. This grant allows the campus to offer research-backed professional leadership development courses to its staff. This is the second year that K-State Salina has qualified for the grant, and more than 40% of employees have taken advantage of the opportunity.

According to staff at the Kansas Leadership Center, or KLC, the training fosters leadership for stronger, healthier and more prosperous communities in the state. KLC is working with K-State Salina to help create a culture of leadership that embraces change and tackles challenges through its unique approach. Those who complete the courses gain competencies and skills that encourage leadership to come from anyone — regardless of title or position.

With leadership engagement from faculty and staff continuing to grow, K-State Salina welcomed Julia Fabris McBride, chief civic leadership development officer of the Kansas Leadership Center and co-author of the book "When Everyone Leads," to be the featured guest speaker at the campus's annual Fall Kickoff. Fabris McBride took the opportunity at the yearly event to inspire and mobilize the faculty and staff of K-State Salina to practice their leadership skills.

"Our campus was thrilled to welcome Julia to speak with our faculty and staff," said Kirsten Zoller, executive director of strategic initiatives at K-State Salina. "Julia brought a unique perspective based on her years of professional leadership and management. This presentation encouraged our campus to continue to practice leadership and reminded us how important our mission of developing global leaders in aerospace and technology is."

As K-State Salina continues its dedication to leadership development, the campus hopes to foster a culture of leaders eager to embark on new challenges in support of the new strategic initiatives as part of the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan.

K-State Salina now offers a new leadership course taught in collaboration with K-State's Staley School of Leadership. All incoming students participate in this introductory course, ensuring leadership competencies are developed for all K-State Salina students. Students who complete the course will also have the option to continue their education in leadership and obtain a minor in leadership studies.The leadership studies minor is a complement to any degree option. During these courses, students will work toward personal leadership development and a practical framework to further self-awareness, values and purpose. The academic minor, through the Staley School of Leadership, will also help K-State Salina students become involved in the Salina community with service projects in support of organizations working on community challenges."Preparing our students for life after graduation and ensuring that they are career-ready is a huge emphasis on this campus," said Kyle Chamberlin, assistant dean of student life at K-State Salina. "With the competencies and quality instruction that the Staley School of Leadership is known for, we are expecting future graduates of K-State Salina to be not only career-ready but also ready to be leaders in their respective industries the moment they accept their first jobs."Faculty, staff and administration are also getting the opportunity to practice their leadership skills by completing leadership education through the Kansas Leadership Center's Leadership Transformation Grant. This grant allows the campus to offer research-backed professional leadership development courses to its staff. This is the second year that K-State Salina has qualified for the grant, and more than 40% of employees have taken advantage of the opportunity.According to staff at the Kansas Leadership Center, or KLC, the training fosters leadership for stronger, healthier and more prosperous communities in the state. KLC is working with K-State Salina to help create a culture of leadership that embraces change and tackles challenges through its unique approach. Those who complete the courses gain competencies and skills that encourage leadership to come from anyone — regardless of title or position.With leadership engagement from faculty and staff continuing to grow, K-State Salina welcomed Julia Fabris McBride, chief civic leadership development officer of the Kansas Leadership Center and co-author of the book "When Everyone Leads," to be the featured guest speaker at the campus's annual Fall Kickoff. Fabris McBride took the opportunity at the yearly event to inspire and mobilize the faculty and staff of K-State Salina to practice their leadership skills."Our campus was thrilled to welcome Julia to speak with our faculty and staff," said Kirsten Zoller, executive director of strategic initiatives at K-State Salina. "Julia brought a unique perspective based on her years of professional leadership and management. Saline County Jail Booking Activity, Sept. 21

Audience members clapped along as 101-year-old Bob Delk played folk music and classic country songs alongside his group, "Bob Delk and Friends," on the Stiefel Theatre stage for the inaugural Sunflower Seniors Got Talent Show Monday evening.

The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA) kicked off its yearly celebration with a new addition — the Sunflower Seniors Got Talen Show, which featured musicians and artists ranging from age 65 to more than 100.

Some participants included 'Bob Delk and Friends,' the 'Pine Village Players,' 'Charming Chimers' and Hays musician Bob Dreiling. Dave Lewis, the host of NewsRadio's KMAN Morning Show, announced the talent show.

Each $10 ticket for the talent show fundraised for some of NC-FH AAA's programs like Friendship Meals, Medicare benefits, counseling and other services for older Kansans and caregivers.

Lewis, also the K-State Football announcer at Bill Snyder Family Stadium from 2006 - 2021, kicked off the show. 

"It's a great opportunity just to sit back and enjoy a night of really cheap entertainment," Lewis said.

After Julie Govert Walter, executive director of NC-FH AAA, informed the audience of NC-FH AAA's ongoing programs, the performance began with Bob Dreiling from Hays, KS, singing the National Anthem.

As the night continued, performances ranged from music to comedy acts, with the oldest performer, Bob Delk from 'Bob Delk and Friends' from Marion County, at 101.

"This sounded fun, and I'm geriatric too, so this interested me," said Bonnie Smith, a visitor from Pittsburg, KS. "It's been a good time."

On Tuesday, NC-FH AAA began the Sunflower Fair at Tony's Pizza Event Center, where speakers, informational exhibits, health screenings, auctions and live music performers entertained patrons of the event.

"What we produce with the Sunflower Fair is a one-day event that features trustworthy information presented in an easy-to-understand way," Walter said.

The last speaker to close out the event was Marci Penner, the executive director of the Kansas Sampler, who presented her second iteration of 'The Kansas Guidebook' at the Sunflower Fair.

Penner encouraged the audience to utilize the guidebook to create their own Kansas road trips and enjoy the journey.

"It's not just about getting to your destination — you have to enjoy the road there too," Penner said. "And there's plenty of stops to go out and see."

The Sunflower Fair provided 13 varied workshops throughout the day, covering topics like cybersecurity, information on Medicare benefits and gardening.

Alongside the workshops, NC-FH AAA invited trusted businesses in the region to inform patrons of their organizations' services.

"Our focus is on helping older Kansans and people living with disabilities and their caregivers," Walter said. "And anyone who helps celebrate many more birthdays, come to this place."

The 2023 NC-FH AAA Sunflower Fair kicked off with new Sunflower Seniors Got Talent Show

Submitted&nbsp; Commander&nbsp;Steve Murrison of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. Post&nbsp;1432,&nbsp;announced the kick-off of the VFW’s annual Patriot’s Pen youth essay competition. Middle school students in grades 6-8 in this area have the opportunity to compete and win thousands of dollars in national awards.

The VFW enacted the Patriot’s Pen competition in 1995 to encourage young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society by composing a 300- to 400-word patriotic-themed essay. The theme for the&nbsp;2023-2024&nbsp;competition is&nbsp;“How are you inspired by America?”

Students begin by competing at the local Post level. Post winners advance to District competition with District winners advancing to the state competition. State first-place winners compete for their share of thousands of dollars in awards, and the national first-place winner is awarded&nbsp;$5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Each year, more than 125,000 students participate nationwide. VFW Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest

The annual "Fe For a Cure" 5K Run fundraising event dedicated to supporting cancer patients at the Tammy Walker Cancer Center, had a total of 791 registered participants, including runners, walkers, and even "couch potatoes," who stepped forward to pledge their support for patients undergoing treatment.

Those	who	couldn't make it to the	event,	but still wanted to	receive	a	t-shirt	to	support	the	cause, registered as	a	“Couch	Potato.”

&nbsp;Event organizers Congratulated Daniel Craig and Tabatha Deines who were the top overall male and female finishers. The most significant chance for thunderstorms will be Thursday night, with a %60 chance for precipitation in the Salina area. 

The Wichita National Weather Service predicted a chance of showers and thunderstorms late Thursday afternoon and evening, but after 1 a.m., Salina will likely receive showers and a thunderstorm.

Friday afternoon and evening have a %30 chance of thunderstorms, with the Wichita NWS stating storms will likely occur before 1 a.m. Friday night.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1432 Commander Steve Murrison announced the kick-off of this year’s Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award contest.

Every year, the VFW recognizes exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to their students. The winning teachers from each (state) Department receive a national citation for themselves, and one for their school.

Current certified/licensed teachers of grades K-12 can be nominated by fellow teachers, students, family members, other interested individuals or nominate themselves. Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism, and strive to help students develop a better understanding of democratic values and beliefs are prime candidates for the award. Nominations are to be turned into your local VFW Post 1432 by October 31, 2023.

Nominated teachers compete at the local VFW Post level with the winner in the K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 grade levels advancing to the district level competition, if applicable, with their winners advancing to the state level competition by Jan. 1. State first place winners are advanced to National Headquarters by Feb. 1, for national level competition.

The VFW enacted the Teacher of the Year award contest in 1999 as a way to identify and recognize America’s best educators. The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top teachers who instill a sense of national pride in students by teaching citizenship education topics regularly and promoting America’s history and traditions effectively.

In this first episode of our monthly series with Saline County Administrator, Phil Smith-Hanes, we discuss Saline County's innovative uses of Federal COVID-19 ARPA funds, the soon-to-be-completed Saline County Jail, and the duties and responsibilities of the county administrator.&nbsp;

"I grew up in a really small town in south-central Kansas about an hour from Salina and I always felt like, community was just sort of a really big part of my life," Smith-Hanes said.

"I think to the extent possible, we need to make sure that we're serving the common interests and the common good of the community and looking forward to that kind of a future. So it's a really neat time to be in Saline County. We've had so many different economic development announcements and major projects that have been announced in the four years that I've been in the community. It's really great to see," Smith-Hanes said.&nbsp;

Kansas Wesleyan's fall music schedule continues Thursday, when the String Orchestra joins Smoky Valley High School's Band and String Orchestra for a combined performance. This special event gets underway at 7:30 p.m. in A.J. Steinberg Auditorium at Lindsborg High School, and admission is free.

"These concerts provide a great opportunity for our program," said Dr. Leonardo Rosario, conductor of the String Orchestra. "By going into the surrounding communities, more people have an opportunity to see the talented musicians we have at KWU!"

The SVHS Band will open the evening, with KWU's String Orchestra and the SVHS Orchestra to follow. The concert will close with a combined piece from both orchestras.

Thursday's event is the first of three similar concerts this semester, with future performances set to happen alongside the Salina South High School orchestra on Oct. 3 – the program's next concert – and the Manhattan High School orchestra Oct. 26.

String orchestra to share stage in special Lindsborg performance

MANHATTAN — The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/105/" target="_blank">K-State 105 initiative</a>&nbsp;is supporting small business development in northwest Kansas through a collaborative approach that leverages the expertise and small business connections of higher education and statewide and regional partners.

Two universities — Kansas State University and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/" target="_blank">Fort Hays State University</a>&nbsp;— as well as two K-State 105 partners —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.networkkansas.com/" target="_blank">NetWork Kansas</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://nwkeici.org/" target="_blank">Innovation Center</a>&nbsp;— are working together to expand the service offerings of the FHSU-led Small Business Development Center in northwest Kansas.

"Our K-State 105 initiative focuses on community engagement that&nbsp;drives&nbsp;economic impact and prosperity for Kansas and our 105 counties,"&nbsp;said Marshall Stewart, K-State senior vice president and chief of staff.&nbsp;"This type of innovative partnership that brings together higher education and economic development organizations across the state is exactly the type of work in which a next-generation land-grant university should engage.

"Through the partnership, K-State 105 is providing NetWork Kansas with funding that will go to resource partners and support entrepreneurship programming and technical assistance for small businesses in all 105 counties. 

"In this instance in northwest Kansas, NetWork Kansas will work with the Innovation Center to enhance the Kansas Small Business Development Center. The FHSU-led Kansas Small Business Development Center, or SBDC, operates as a network of eight regional economic development and business consulting centers that currently serve all 105 counties in the state.

"The businesses and communities of northwest Kansas will benefit greatly from this investment in professional expertise and better access to essential resources the SBDC and the Innovation Center will begin delivering in just a few short months," said Tisa Mason, president of Fort Hays State University. "This initiative will ensure our best business and economic development experts are working every day to advance economic prosperity throughout the High Plains.

"The SBDC and Innovation Center partnership will serve a larger number of clients in northwest Kansas than each organization can serve individually. The partners ultimately expect to serve 432 clients, help start 16 new businesses and conduct 60 capital transactions in fiscal year 2024.

"This new partnership will allow us to collectively deliver more assistance than we have been able to do individually," said Greg Jordan, state director of the SBDC. "Small businesses in western Kansas will reap the benefit of us all working more closely together to help them start, grow and thrive."

"Our shared efforts in the days ahead will contribute significantly to economic prosperity in northwest Kansas," said Scott Sproul, president and CEO of the Innovation Center.

"We congratulate Fort Hays State University, the Kansas Small Business Development Center and the Innovation Center on this impactful advancement and look forward to partnering further on K-State 105," said Erik Pedersen, president and chief operating officer of NetWork Kansas.

The K-State 105 funding that will support this initiative comes from the annual state investment that K-State 105 received for fiscal year 2024. 

K-State 105 is Kansas State University's answer to the call for a comprehensive economic growth and advancement solution for Kansas. The initiative leverages the statewide K-State Research and Extension network to deliver the full breadth of the university's collective knowledge and solution-driven innovation to every Kansan, right where they live and work. 

Additionally, K-State 105 forges the connections and partnerships that create access to additional expertise within other state institutions and agencies, nonprofits and corporations — all part of an effort to build additional capacities and strengths in each of the 105 counties in the state.

Our&nbsp;political leaders are old, and many&nbsp;are&nbsp;<a href="https://devotedguardians.com/at-what-point-is-someone-considered-elderly/">elderly</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; Dianne Feinstein&nbsp;is currently the oldest&nbsp;sitting&nbsp;Senator at age 90. &nbsp;She has experienced a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/09/politics/dianne-feinstein-hospitalized-after-fall/index.html">string of&nbsp;serious health issues</a>,&nbsp;but remains&nbsp;committed to serving out&nbsp;her&nbsp;term. &nbsp;At age 88,&nbsp;Senator Chuck Grassley&nbsp;recently&nbsp;<a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/elections/2022/11/09/republican-chuck-grassley-wins-iowa-us-senate-race-beats-mike-franken/69611362007/">won</a>&nbsp;an eighth term&nbsp;that&nbsp;will&nbsp;end&nbsp;when he reaches his mid-90s. &nbsp;

At 80, Nancy Pelosi became the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/1/3/22211713/nancy-pelosi-elected-fourth-term-speaker-house">oldest</a>&nbsp;representative elected as House Speaker.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer was 83&nbsp;and the Majority Whip Jim Clyburn 82.&nbsp;&nbsp;Now at 83, Pelosi&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pelosi-house-speaker-democrat-congress-san-francisco-a251e03986a589d5c0bd7f1122f291e4">declared</a>&nbsp;she&nbsp;will&nbsp;again&nbsp;seek&nbsp;reelection. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Joe Biden became the oldest president, at age 77.&nbsp;At 80,&nbsp;Biden&nbsp;became the oldest president to announce a reelection campaign.&nbsp;His chief Republican rival, Donald Trump,&nbsp;is&nbsp;77 years old. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Congress is&nbsp;<a href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/aging-congress-boomers/">older</a>&nbsp;than it’s ever been. &nbsp;The&nbsp;median&nbsp;Senator is 65, and the&nbsp;median&nbsp;House member is&nbsp;58. &nbsp;

Kansas Senators Marshall and Moran are ages&nbsp;64 and 69 respectively.&nbsp;Three&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;House members&nbsp;are&nbsp;notably&nbsp;younger. &nbsp;Representatives&nbsp;Mann and Davis are in their 40s&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jake&nbsp;LaTurner a mere 35. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

State politicians are aging&nbsp;too. &nbsp;The average age&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href="https://stateline.org/2015/12/23/in-state-legislatures-millennials-are-often-left-out/">statehouse</a>&nbsp;members is 56.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some states, like New Hampshire, the average&nbsp;age&nbsp;is much higher at 66. &nbsp;In Kansas&nbsp;it’s 58. &nbsp;

For sitting governors, the average age is 58. &nbsp;Eleven&nbsp;governors, including&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;Governor&nbsp;Laura&nbsp;Kelly,&nbsp;are at least 70. &nbsp;Alabama’s Governor&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kay_Ivey">Kay Ivey</a>&nbsp;is the&nbsp;oldest&nbsp;at 77. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

No other&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat11b.htm">occupation</a>&nbsp;skews this&nbsp;old&nbsp;nor produces so many&nbsp;senior&nbsp;leaders.&nbsp;&nbsp;We seem to have a&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerontocracy">gerontocracy</a>. &nbsp;Millennials are&nbsp;the&nbsp;largest generation&nbsp;by population&nbsp;but one of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/19/politics/millennials-genxers-baby-boomers-congress-representation-dg/index.html">smallest groups in Congress</a>. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

None of this may bother you. &nbsp;People&nbsp;are living&nbsp;and working&nbsp;longer; they are more active and healthier than past generations.&nbsp;

Yet age&nbsp;impacts&nbsp;representation. &nbsp;

Aging politicians&nbsp;are more&nbsp;<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1532673X18754557?journalCode=aprb">focused</a>&nbsp;on issues important to older Americans such as&nbsp;social security&nbsp;and&nbsp;Medicare.&nbsp;And this&nbsp;comesat the expense of issues younger Americans&nbsp;<a href="https://circle.tufts.edu/latest-research/youth-2022-concerned-about-issues-neglected-campaigns">care about</a>. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Very few&nbsp;young&nbsp;people&nbsp;even&nbsp;run for office.&nbsp;In 2018, several&nbsp;<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/vote-kansas-teens-running-governor/story?id=57058542">Kansas teenagers</a>&nbsp;campaigned&nbsp;for governor. &nbsp;The result was swift passage of minimum age limits for the state’s highest office. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

More typically, young people&nbsp;grow frustrated&nbsp;by our graying institutions&nbsp;and&nbsp;disengage&nbsp;politically,&nbsp;which&nbsp;starts&nbsp;a self-perpetuating cycle. &nbsp;If&nbsp;older&nbsp;legislators know young people are unlikely to vote, they are less likely to push issues&nbsp;important to&nbsp;young people.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Maximum age requirements are a potential solution. &nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;for example&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li_2022/b2021_22/statute/020_000_0000_chapter/020_026_0000_article/020_026_0008_section/020_026_0008_k/">require</a>s&nbsp;judges to retire at age 75.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A&nbsp;recent&nbsp;<a href="https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/articles-reports/2022/01/19/elected-officials-maximum-age-limit-poll">CBS News/YouGov poll</a>&nbsp;showed 73 percent of Americans support maximum age limits for elected&nbsp;offices.&nbsp;&nbsp;A quarter said 60 years old should be the maximum, nearly 40% said 70, and 23% preferred 80. &nbsp;Most Democrats and Republicans supported limits as did the youngest and oldestcohorts. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Americans do&nbsp;appreciate&nbsp;older,&nbsp;seasoned lawmakers.&nbsp;And they know&nbsp;age is an imperfect proxy for health and ability. &nbsp;But they also&nbsp;know&nbsp;older&nbsp;politicians stay too long sacrificing younger&nbsp;generations&nbsp;that bring fresh ideas&nbsp;and energy. &nbsp;

Senator&nbsp;Mitt&nbsp;Romney’s recent&nbsp;<a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4202490-mitt-romney-to-retire-from-senate/">retirement</a>&nbsp;shows agingpoliticians will pass the torch. &nbsp;Senior&nbsp;senators Cardin, Carper, and&nbsp;Stabenow decided to retire as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;
