In a strategic move to enhance the educational experience for its students and contribute to the local community, <a href="https://www.bethanylb.edu/">Bethany College</a> has officially entered a groundbreaking partnership with the Lindsborg Child Development Center (LCDC). This collaboration comes as a response to the recent change in Kansas State Board of Education certifications, which now includes preschool education as part of the elementary education curriculum.

Starting in the Spring 2024 semester, Bethany's education department initiated the partnership by sending freshman Laura Eisenzimmer to complete her ED200 field experience in LCDC's pre-school classrooms. The proximity of LCDC's new facility blocks away from Bethany's campus adds significant value to this venture.

"Our partnership with Lindsborg Child Development Center helps the Bethany education department meet both our goals of providing high-quality experiences and preparing students for future teaching positions," said Alan English, Associate Professor of Education and Chair of the Department.&nbsp;

LCDC, a non-profit organization, opened its new facility in October 2022, making a substantial impact on McPherson and Saline counties.

"By engaging in this partnership with Bethany College, we hope to provide students with an understanding of children's dispositions, social-emotional strengths, and limitations that might affect learning success in a classroom setting,"said Christy Clarkson, LCDC Director.

The Lindsborg Child Development Center is an exceptional space for early childhood education, born out of about $3 million in charitable giving. It caters to children from 2 weeks to 12 years old, providing an enriching environment for growth and learning. The center has become a vital resource for the local community, addressing a significant childcare shortage and supporting parents in returning to work.

Laura Eisenzimmer, a Bethany freshman involved in the program, expressed her excitement about the field experience. a "I'm excited to get to go to Lindsborg Child Development Center for my field experience! It is a great experience to see how things are set up," Eisenzimmer said.

It could be a change in address, where a utility deposit didn't make it back to a student who moved from home to school and then again, those types of things. If you have a minute to search your name and then a few other family members, one in seven people have unclaimed property in Kansas."

It is always free to search and file claims for property through Johnson's office.

"When you see your name pop up, there's a little orange button that says, Claim," Johnson said. "You click on Claim and that will lead you into the claim process. If it's for yourself, you just click on owner and it's pretty simple."

On Feb. 1, 1960, four Black college students began a sit-in protest at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, where they’d been refused service.

In 1790, the U.S. Supreme Court convened for the first time in New York, but because only three of its six justices were present recessed until the next day.

In 1862, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” a poem by Julia Ward Howe, was published in the Atlantic Monthly.

In 1865, abolitionist John S. Rock became the first Black lawyer admitted to the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court.

In 1943, during World War II, one of America’s most highly decorated military units, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, made up almost exclusively of Japanese-Americans, was authorized.

In 1959, men in Switzerland rejected giving women the right to vote by a more than 2-1 referendum margin. (Swiss women gained the right to vote in 1971.)

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Wednesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1996 Freightliner semi driven by Anthony B.&nbsp;McCrary, 72,&nbsp;Pinckneyville, Illinois, attempted to pass an eastbound 2011 Mazda 3 driven by&nbsp; William A.&nbsp;Tiroff, 31, Amarillo, Texas, who was slowing to make a left turn onto Avenue W from Kansas 156.

The semi struck the Mazda. The impact pushed the Mazda into a 2007 Peterbilt semi driven by Seth A. Tucker, 28, Huntsville, Missouri.

EMS transported&nbsp;Tiroff to the Ellsworth County Hospital.&nbsp;McCrary and Tucker were not injured. All three drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Identity theft can happen in a lot of ways: a stolen wallet, a missing phone, or a hacked online account. Then there are impersonators — scammers who pretend to be almost anyone. They’ll tell you almost any story to get you to trust them, so they can steal your money or information. If you’re a veteran, there’s another risk: sharing information with someone who claims they’ll help with paperwork and filing benefits claims. But instead of helping you for free as they’re supposed to, dishonest advisers charge you — and may take and misuse your information, too.

What are some ways to protect yourself from identity theft targeting veterans?

Don’t pay to file — or get help with — VA benefits claims. It’s free to apply for any type of veterans’ benefits. Scammers may offer to help you for a fee or a percentage of the benefits you get. Don’t do it. Get free help from an accredited representative.

Don’t work with anyone who pressures you. Take your time to review paperwork and consider all your options, including doing nothing. 

Don’t sign blank paperwork to be filled in later. Also, be sure your VA benefits are deposited directly into your account — and not the account of an adviser, assisted living facility, or nursing home.

Safeguard your personal information. Never share your VA login credentials or password. Check out VA’s advice on setting up multifactor authentication on your VA accounts.

Get help if your VA benefits or services are affected. Call the toll-free VA Veteran Identity Theft Helpline: 1-855-578-5492.

The Salina Arts &amp; Humanities Foundation has approved Horizons Grants for local non-profit organizations and opens Enrichment Grant application for funding in 2024.  

Horizons Grants support initiatives demonstrating a commitment to artistic excellence and community involvement by engaging audience members as active participants. Applicants also are encouraged to develop strategic partnerships to strengthen the reach of their local activities. Organizational Project grants funded for 2024 are:  

Awarded amount: $6,000&nbsp;“An Authentic Lens: Phase 2 SAC Guest Curator Project.”

Salina Art Center received funding to implement phase 2 of its guest curator framework, building a 4-year exhibition schedule relevant to our community and incorporating a collaborative mindset to expand meaningful experiences with viewing contemporary art. This grant funds the creation of a CaFE portal for a broader reach for artist and curator calls. Three calls will support exhibitions related to identity in figurative representation, plains indigenous culture, and agriculture.&nbsp;

Awarded amount: $6,000 for “Salina Reads 2024.”

The Salina Public Library received funding to support new programming for the Salina Reads 2024 community reading program. During February 2024, the program will center on a discussion of the book “Lab Girl” by Hope Jahren. Horizons funds will directly support a performance by a visiting educational entertainer, UPGuys, the theater rental for the performance at Theater Salina, and a local musician to perform at the kick-off event.  

Awarded amount: $6,000 for “Cabaret Reimagined.”

The Symphony received funding to present a multi-disciplinary concert titled “Cabaret Reimagined” in November 2024. The playfully provocative program will incorporate multiple art forms, including symphonic music, opera, dance, and visual projections. Featured pieces will include Kurt Weill’s “The Seven Deadly Sins” as well as contemporary jazz composer and musician Kyle Saulnier’s “Sun Upon a Hill.” In addition to the November 10 Symphony Concert, Saulnier will clinic with several local/area high school and college jazz bands.

Salina Arts and Humanities announces 2024 Horizon Grant recipients

North Ottawa County Schools is set to have a new superintendent for the 2024-2025 school year. USD 305 Secondary Education Director Curtis Stevens will become superintendent effective July 1.

With nearly a decade of experience working in USD 305 schools, Stevens said working in a district close to his soon to be former employer will have its benefits.

"Minneapolis is a unique community and they have their own identity," Stevens said. "I would never say that Salina has the same identity as Minneapolis or vice versa, but I think that having the opportunity to work with familiar faces and benefit from programming and staff development and mentoring from both school districts, is just going to be really rewarding."

A graduate of Fort Hays State University, Stevens received his seventh-12th grade teaching certificate in 2002.&nbsp;He received his endorsement for English as a second language from Kansas State University in 2005, before attending Emporia State University to receive a master's degree in education administration and leadership. He also has a doctoral degree in educational leadership and administration from Kansas State University.

Approximately 640 students attend North Ottawa County Public Schools, a stark comparison to Salina Public Schools which is the twelfth largest district in Kansas and has an enrollment of&nbsp;approximately 6,953&nbsp;students in its kindergarten through grade 12 program, according to the school's websites.&nbsp;

A Kansas native, Stevens grew up in Scott City and attended Scott City High School. His wife is from Spearville, Kansas. He said his experience both attending and working in rural school districts has prepared him for this leadership position.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"My wife and I have both grew up in western Kansas communities that are rural districts," Stevens said. "Our kids have been in Salina Public Schools since they were in kindergarten. There'll be some changes for them, but I think that every district, whether it's large or whether it's a little bit smaller, they all have their&nbsp; advantages and North Ottawa County Public Schools certainly has that as well."

Curtis said during his time working at Salina Public Schools he participated in the Kansas Association of School Board's BOLD program.

"I've traveled to Burlington, which they have the nuclear power plant so their tax base looks a lot different out there than it does here. We went out to Goodland, Kansas, and so this program, when it's all done, We will visit about seven different school districts of all sizes," Stevens said. "It really opened my mind... by getting the chance to work in various districts, I think it makes a leader, much more knowledgeable and allows you to grow professionally to navigate and become more resilient in handling such challenges."

Stevens said in the last ten years North Ottawa County Schools have been progressive and proactive in providing new opportunities for students to learn both in and outside the traditional classroom setting.&nbsp;

"They [North Ottawa County Schools] passed a bond issue and they've got some great programs, like their 'Acorns to Oaks' program where some of the senior citizens of the community come in and read to the kids the kids read to them," Stevens said.&nbsp;

One unique oportunity at North Ottawa County Schools is helping maintain the chicken house that produces more than 5,000 eggs annually.&nbsp;

"They don't sell those eggs, they are donated to the Kansas Food Bank," Stevens said. "Their FFA program, is a flagship program for the state and I'm excited to see how how they've been able to grow that."

Stevens said his professional relationships with other local superintendents will help him in this new role.&nbsp;

"We've been fortunate because there's superintendents that have ties to Salina. Deena Hilbig  out in Ellsworth or Pam Irwin with Twin Valley, just to name a few, They've all been in different types of districts and it's just a wonderful group of professionals to collaborate and network with."&nbsp;

During his interview, Stevens said he made it clear he intends to do a lot of listening.&nbsp;

"I intend to do a lot of listening in the community, during the interview, I had an opportunity to interact with staff, students, and community members and it's just a great community," Stevens said.&nbsp;

Outgoing North Ottawa Schools Superintendent, Chris Vignery, said the decision to move from Minneapolis was made to be closer to family.&nbsp;

"The purpose for us leaving is because we have four kids and two of them are married and we have six grandkids in the Olathe area," Vignery said. "We're empty nesters. So our goal is to get out there near our grandkids."

Vignery, who served as USD 239 superintendent for ten years, told Salina Post he intends to secure a superintendent job near the Olathe Area.&nbsp;

"I resigned without having a job and the reason I did that is because I was hoping to resign early enough that our board could find a great applicant and I believe they have found that in Dr. Stevens," Vignery said.&nbsp;

When asked what advice or words of wisdom he could share with Stevens, Vignery said listening is key.&nbsp;

"That first year is a learning year. You want to make a difference as well, but really get to know the people that you're working with and learn about the system that's already in place first and then decide what needs to be tweaked," Vignery said. "Just gather information and listen. I'm sure he'll stay busy enough."

Stevens will start at North Ottawa Schools in July 2024.&nbsp;

Growing a vegetable garden on one of the Salina Community Garden plots has many benefits.&nbsp; For many, one of the biggest benefits is simply more space.&nbsp; Many city backyards may have shade trees or other obstacles that make growing a nice garden difficult. In these situations, a community garden plot may offer the perfect solution.&nbsp;

Fortunately, Salinans have multiple community gardens that offer great gardening space for many residents.&nbsp; Each year the City of Salina and K-State Research and Extension-Central Kansas District sponsor three community gardens throughout the city that make garden plots available to over 100 local families.

These families benefit from better tasting-,, more nutritious food, good exercise, and the camaraderie of community gardening.&nbsp;

Each garden plot has access to water and hoses are provided.&nbsp; Material such as straw or wood chips to mulch with is also provided. Wheelbarrows are also available&nbsp; to move the mulch or other gardening materials.&nbsp; Gardeners themselves are responsible for all other tools and gardening supplies to care for their plots.

The largest of the Salina Community Garden sites is at the former&nbsp;Stimmel&nbsp;Elementary School. There are 64 garden plots at the&nbsp;Stimmel&nbsp;School site - each about 600 sq. ft. in size - and many are still available.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Other garden sites include the Carver Center Community Garden and the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank Community Garden.&nbsp; If you would like to use a community garden plot, come into the K-State Research &amp; Extension office to sign up.&nbsp; Available plots are first come, first served.&nbsp;

"It is always fun to see new folks enjoying the outdoors and making new friends around a common interest," said Jason Graves, Horticulturist for KSRE Central District. "Many even use their gardens for the benefit of others and enjoy sharing the fruit of their labor with other family or friends.  Don’t let the lack of space in your backyard be an excuse any longer."

Salina Symphony presents “Cirque Goes to the Movies” at Stiefel Theatre March 2

Salina Public Library has installed a new book drop at the OCCK Bus Stop on 9th Street and Hamilton Ave. The book drop intersects both the Green and Blue OCCK bus routes.&nbsp;

Leadership Salina played an important role in the acquisition of the new book drop. As part of a team project, Leadership Salina’s Blue Group took the initiative to apply for a grant and partner with local organizations to enhance library accessibility, improve literacy, and help build community engagement with the residents of North Salina through a Salina Public Library book drop.

Team member Tanner Colvin said expaning access to resources in Salina's north-end residents was the goal of their project.&nbsp;

“ When we discovered that the library was looking for a way to accomplish the same thing, our project became clear. We believe that we can further the Salina Public Library’s mission of connecting people to information, learning, and culture with this new book drop,” said Tanner Colvin.&nbsp;

“Our main goal with this project was to remove potential barriers from the residents of North Salina so they can better access our public library. We hope to see an increase in both books returned and use of the library’s free resources and materials,” said Kirsty Hartley.&nbsp;

The Leadership Salina Team had the help of the Greater Salina Community Foundation’s 2023 Leadership Salina Grant, OCCK who covered the cost of materials and installation of the concrete slab the book drop now sits on, and the Salina Public Library who provided the remainder of the funds and staff to install and maintain the book drop.

&nbsp;“We’re grateful to our community partners for helping the library fulfill its mission,” said Melanie Hedgespeth, Director of Salina Public Library. “Books, movies and games have the power to improve our lives through the knowledge they share and the stories they tell. Making the return process easier helps to ensure continued access for the community.”&nbsp;

As part of a team project, Leadership Salina’s Blue Group took the initiative to apply for a grant and partner with local organizations to enhance library accessibility, improve literacy, and help build community engagement with the residents of North Salina through a Salina Public Library book drop.<figure>

 </figure>Team member Tanner Colvin said expaning access to resources in Salina's north-end residents was the goal of their project.&nbsp;“ When we discovered that the library was looking for a way to accomplish the same thing, our project became clear. We believe that we can further the Salina Public Library’s mission of connecting people to information, learning, and culture with this new book drop,” said Tanner Colvin.&nbsp;“Our main goal with this project was to remove potential barriers from the residents of North Salina so they can better access our public library. We hope to see an increase in both books returned and use of the library’s free resources and materials,” said Kirsty Hartley.&nbsp;The Leadership Salina Team had the help of the Greater Salina Community Foundation’s 2023 Leadership Salina Grant, OCCK who covered the cost of materials and installation of the concrete slab the book drop now sits on, and the Salina Public Library who provided the remainder of the funds and staff to install and maintain the book drop.&nbsp;“We’re grateful to our community partners for helping the library fulfill its mission,” said Melanie Hedgespeth, Director of Salina Public Library. “Books, movies and games have the power to improve our lives through the knowledge they share and the stories they tell. Making the return process easier helps to ensure continued access for the community.”&nbsp;

Salina Public Library installs new book drop in North Salina 

An out-of-this-world conversation — quite literally — is coming to the University of Kansas.

NASA astronaut and KU School of Engineering graduate Loral O’Hara will host a live Q&amp;A with KU students and faculty from her post on the International Space Station. O’Hara is scheduled to connect via live satellite link at 2:25 p.m. Feb. 9. The public is invited to&nbsp;<a href="https://engr.ku.edu/loral-ohara-live-qa-international-space-station">watch the event live</a>.

O’Hara traveled to the space station in September 2023 and is due to return in mid-March. She is part of the ISS Expedition 70 crew. According to NASA, the astronauts and cosmonauts are studying an array of microgravity phenomena to benefit humans living on and off the Earth. The crew is also exploring heart health, cancer treatments, space manufacturing techniques and more during their long duration stay in Earth orbit.

Rick Hale, professor of aerospace engineering, will moderate the Q&amp;A session, which is scheduled to last approximately 25 minutes.

Hale, who also serves as aerospace engineering department chair and taught O’Hara when she was a student at KU, said this unique opportunity is extremely valuable.

“Having a former student in such a high visibility position, when the odds of achieving such a position are so limited, is a tangible reinforcement to the professional development plans of current and future aerospace engineering students,” Hale said. “Loral’s professional development path is a testament to what can be achieved with a long-term vision and focus. The opportunity for students to interact with her in real time makes the experience more real and brings the community closer.”

O’Hara graduated from KU with a degree in aerospace engineering in 2006. She was selected as part of the 2017 NASA astronaut class.&nbsp; O’Hara is the fourth KU graduate to travel into space, joining 1955 KU engineering graduates Joe Engle and Ron Evans, and 1973 physics &amp; astronomy graduate Steve Hawley.

Kansas has some of the most permissive gun laws in the country, and last week the state house began debate on a bill that, if passed, would put a constitutional amendment on the ballot to further enshrine gun rights in the state constitution.

The proposed amendment would change the language of Section 4 of the Kansas Bill of Rights to include possession and use of ammunition, firearm accessories, and firearm components as constitutionally protected rights. It would also add:

The right to keep and bear arms is a natural and fundamental right. This shall not be infringed. Any restriction of such right shall be subject to the strict scrutiny standard.

In 1905, the Kansas Supreme Court ruled in Salina v. Blaksley that the current language in Section 4 does not protect an individual right to bear arms. In more recent cases, the Court has also rejected arguments that use Section 4 to challenge state and local statutes regulating firearms.

Should the state constitution be amended, it would only allow the state legislature to regulate firearms if it furthered a “compelling governmental interest” and was narrowly tailored to achieve that interest.

Not to mention, federal regulations would still supersede state law — a relationship currently being reinforced as Missouri’s Second Amendment Preservation Act makes its way through the federal court system.

Importantly, this proposed amendment contradicts Kansans’ public opinion on gun regulation.

A vast majority of Kansans support restrictions beyond the state’s current regulations.

In fall 2022, the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University asked Kansans about ten gun regulation policies in their annual Kansas Speaks public opinion survey.

More than 70% of those surveyed favored six of the ten policies: requiring universal background checks; requiring a person to be 21 or older; mandatory three-day waiting period; preventing sales to people who have been reported as dangerous by mental health providers; preventing sales to people who have been convicted of violent misdemeanors; and allowing family members to ask the court to temporarily remove guns from people at risk of harming themselves or others.

64% of those surveyed favored authorizing law enforcement officers to temporarily remove guns from individuals who pose an immediate threat of harm to self or others.

And more than 50% of those surveyed favored: banning assault-style weapons; banning high-capacity ammunition clips; and having teachers with appropriate training carry guns at school.

Perhaps surprising to some, a majority of the state’s gun owners also favored nine of these ten policies. Banning assault style weapons was the only exception; supported by 45% of gun owners, opposed by 38%, and neither favored nor opposed by 17%. Note: nearly half (49%) of Kansans surveyed had a firearm in their home.

As is often the case, proposed gun laws contradict public opinion on the issue, and Kansas is no exception.

Political science research can help us understand why the state legislature has introduced an amendment that would make it harder to enact extremely popular gun regulations into law.

For nearly two decades, research has shown that energy has ebbed and flowed among pro-regulation groups while pro-gun groups have been able to sustain political activism.

However, new research found that gun policy has become a durable issue of public concern due to the increased mobilization among pro-regulation citizens in recent years; marking a fundamental shift in public engagement on the gun issue.

The disconnect between public opinion and legislative action in Kansas underscores the complex relationship between policy decisions and popular sentiment, especially in a changing political environment.
