910 KINA Saturday Morning Show Lineup

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

Salina's earliest community hub began as humble gathering spots along the once-flowing Smoky Hill River Channel, where residents swam and raced horses, bicycles and cars.

John Geis originally owned the 45 acres that became Oakdale Park, but in 1881, Saline County purchased the land for $5,500 and quickly transformed it into Salina's first local park.

The Smoky Hill River Channel became popular for fishing and boating, and in the winter, when the channel would freeze over, residents often ice-skated.

According to the Smoky Hill Museum, Salinans gathered under the large shady trees beside the riverbank for weddings, birthdays and holidays.

In the mid-1880s, Oakdale Park hosted the Traveling Chautauqua, a roaming band of entertainers, teachers and artists that visited rural communities.

In 1885, the county installed a fountain that narrowly escaped getting scrapped to support military efforts in World War II.

In 1922, Saline County staff decided it didn't have the funds to maintain the various barns, buildings and other structures at the park, so it leased the land to the City of Salina, which satiated the city's need for additional parkland.

From there, the City of Salina began transforming the park, with a significant remodel in 1935, which removed the race track, grandstand and ballparks and created the formal gardens.

According to the Smoky Hill Museum, staff built a memorial gateway for Civil and Spanis War Veterans. Each side hosts a Union soldier and a Rough Rider.

The Boy Scouts of America donated a miniature copy of the Statue of Liberty to the park in 1950. 

A bathhouse once housed the Smoky Hill Museum at Oakdale Park, but today, the museum stands in a historic federal post office building near downtown Salina.

Throughout the rest of the 20th and 21st centuries, the City of Salina continued to upgrade facilities and host more events at the park. 

The city recently <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/9eeabed8-0ce7-4367-84f3-88cd715d1a31">unveiled the new pickleball courts</a>, funded solely from community donations.

This weekend, thousands of residents and visitors have flooded the historic park for the Smoky Hill River Festival.

📸 Flashback Friday: Salina Post - Oakdale Park - Vol. 46

After 15 seasons and 247 career wins, Pesha Ptacek announced to Southeast of Saline on Wednesday that she would be stepping down as head softball coach.

Ptacek led Southeast in two stints, most recently from 2016 to 2024, helping the Lady Trojans to six state appearances in just eight seasons.

While SES has had much success during her time at the helm, Ptacek plans to make good use of her newfound free time in the spring, and will still be present in the purple and white supporting Southeast on the diamonds.

“I love softball and I love coaching but my son Tiernan is just getting started and I missed all but one of his baseball games this season,” Ptacek said. “I’m excited to be a baseball mom and I want to be able to enjoy his last three years of high school sports.”

Ptacek concludes her coaching career with an overall record of 247-102, and more than ten regional championships, leaving the program in a great state for whoever inherits it next.

“Coach Ptacek is top-notch as a coach, teacher, and person, SES AD Doug Minneman said. “The way she was able to relate to and get the most out of the girls is second to none and we believe this program will keep things rolling we just have to find the right person to take the reins.”

To the surprise of few who know her, the thing Coach Ptacek will miss the most won’t be all the winning or trips to state, but the connections and bonds formed with her players over the course of an excellent career.

“The relationships were the best part of my time coaching here,” she said. “Coaching allows you to get to know your students on a different level and see a side of them that you don’t get to in the classroom. It’s been so fun to see the girls I’ve coached go on to do great things after high school and I can’t wait to watch some of them coach their own kids.”

Despite losing six seniors and their head coach, the Lady Trojans should still be a force to be reckoned with next season, as a new generation of Lady Trojans prepare for their time in the lineup.

“We graduated a very talented senior class this year but the cupboard is far from bare,” Ptacek said. “There are a lot of super-talented softball players in this program and a lot of kids who have had time on the varsity field. I’m confident that they’ll continue to do great things.”

🥎 Pesha Ptacek steps down as head Lady Trojan softball coach

A Salina woman was scammed out of $7,400 in a Bitcoin phone scam on Thursday, June 13. 

The victim, a 75-year-old Salina woman living in the 2000 block of Raymond Avenue, received a phone call from an individual claiming to be "James Williams" from the Saline County Sheriff's "Department." The caller informed her that she had failed to appear for jury duty and was in contempt of court on both state and federal levels.

"The caller told her that she had to make a full payment using Bitcoin to have the charges dropped," said SPD Lt. David Villanueva. "She went to her bank and got $7,400 in cash."

Villanueva said the victim then went to a Bitcoin machine where the caller gave her codes to put in the machine. The scammer provided her with specific codes to input into the machine, directing the payment to their account instead of to a legitimate one. The victim followed the caller's instructions, unaware she was being deceived.

The woman went to the Salina Police Department, where she realized the phone caller was scamming her.

"We reminded her, like we remind the public, that the sheriff's 'department' does not take payment over Bitcoin over the phone or anything," Villanueva said. "Nor would they ever call somebody and say you missed your jury duty and need to pay $7,400."

Villanueva said no, James Williams works at the Saline County Sheriff's Office. 

"It is the Sheriff's Office, not the Sheriff's Department," Villanueva said. "If somebody calls you and says, 'Hey, you owe this or whatever.' Call the Sheriff's Office or Police Department themselves and say, 'Hey, is this true?' and you'll probably find out it's not."

The investigation is ongoing, but SPD acknowledges that recovering the funds will be difficult. 

Salina Post will update this story as new information becomes available.

CoCoRaHS 24-hour rain totals

The American College of Cardiology recently recognized Salina Regional Health Center for its demonstrated expertise and commitment to treating chest pain patients.

Salina Regional received Chest Pain Center reaccreditation with Primary PCI after a rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 730,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. The most common symptom of a heart attack for both men and women is chest pain or discomfort. However, women are more likely to have atypical symptoms. Other heart attack symptoms include, but are not limited to, tingling or discomfort in one or both arms, back, shoulder, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, cold sweat, unusual tiredness, heartburn-like feeling, nausea or vomiting, sudden dizziness, and fainting.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as coronary angioplasty, is a non-surgical procedure that opens narrowed or blocked coronary arteries with a balloon to relieve symptoms of heart disease or reduce heart damage during or after a heart attack.

Hospitals that have earned ACC Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Accreditation have proven exceptional competency in treating patients with heart attack symptoms and have primary PCI available 24/7 every day of the year. To meet the criteria of the accreditation designation, they have streamlined their systems from admission to evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and post-discharge care. They also assist patients with lifestyle changes and maintain formal agreements with other facilities that regularly refer heart attack patients for primary PCI.

“Salina Regional Health Center has demonstrated its commitment to providing north central Kansas with excellent heart care,” said Deepak L. Salina Regional Health Center receives Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI reaccreditation

On Monday through Friday, June 17 through 21, Vance Brothers of Kansas City, Missouri will resurface the following City of Salina streets, weather permitting:

Local roads will be closed to traffic during construction for a period not to exceed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents will be provided sufficient notice of closures and special requests will be accommodated. Arterials and collectors will be resurfaced under traffic.

Microsurfacing is a common method of pavement surface treatment which consists of a polymer modified asphalt slurry of about 3/8 inch thick that coats the pavement surface and creates a smooth moisture-resistant barrier.

City of Salina continues street pavement microsurfacing 

On Thursday, June 6, 2024, at about 9:30 a.m. three males entered Rod’s Convenience store, 1339 N. 9th, Salina, KS. The first subject purchased over a $1000 worth of lottery tickets using a credit card. He stated the tickets were for his aunt. 

After the transaction went through, he attempted to purchase $900 worth lottery tickets for himself. He tried to use the same card but it was denied by the clerk due to the suspicious nature of the transaction.

One of the other subjects he was with said he would purchase them and produced another credit card with the same name as listed on the first credit card, however, this was also denied. The subjects then went to Walmart, 2900 S. 9th, Salina, KS, and attempted to cash the lottery tickets. The tickets were suspended and could not be redeemed. The subjects committed the same acts in both Abilene and Lindsborg, Kansas. 

The subjects were driving a white Hyundai Tucson which was a rental vehicle.

Crimestoppers — lottery ticket scammers

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers responded to the Budget King Motel at 809 North Broadway Boulevard Wednesday morning after a resident reported that someone had entered his room and stolen a few items and thousands of dollars in cash.

At about 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 12, the 41-year-old Salina man reported to officers that he saw his 75-inch television sticking halfway out his door once he returned to his room.

"While he was gone, between 10 and 10:30 a.m., unknown subjects entered his residence and attempted to steal a 75-inch television, but it was still in the doorway," said SPD Capt. James Feldman. "What was taken was an unknown make DVR system and a money bag with approximately $3,000."

Considering the attempted stolen television, Feldman said the total loss totaled $3,800. Officers found no evidence of forced entry.

The stolen DVR set was a crucial part of the motel's camera system, so officers continued looking for evidence outside of video footage.

Feldman said there are no suspects at this time for the burglary.

Thursday, June 13 marked the 38th SM Hanson Festival Jam, which unfortunately had to end several hours ahead of schedule due to heavy rain in the area. 

Although the park will reopen today at 10 a.m., due to the nature of the event and the schedules of the performers, SM Hanson Festival Jam itself will not be rescheduled.

Being in its 38th year, SM Hanson Festival Jam as well as the 48th Smoky Hill River Festival, have an important place in the lives of many area residents and their families. Festival attendee Ami Allison spoke of her family’s relationship with the event.

 “We buy festival shirts every year, all of the family pictures are in our festival shirts in the summertime," Allison said.&nbsp;

The Allisons have been using the event as a family reunion for around fifty years, returning time and time again to enjoy the music and to look back fondly on years past.

The SM Hanson Festival Jam certainly has a history of fond memories and great music, but the event is no stranger to severe weather putting a damper on things either. 

Salina Arts and Humanities Assistant Director Anna Pauscher Morawitz told Salina Post that the last time this had happened was as recently as 2021. Despite SM Hanson Festival Jam’s abrupt ending last night, the rest of the Smoky Hill River Festival will continue as scheduled throughout the rest of this weekend. 

Salina Post would like to thank the artists and event staff of the for all the work and passion put into this event.

At 6:41 p.m. event emcees told the crowd of thousands the show would resume at 7:30 p.m.

From cool drinks near a body of water to late-night bonfires in the backyard, one aspect of the Kansas summer remains the same: triple-digit heat indexes.

More than ten thousand residents and visitors plan to gather in Oakdale Park tomorrow for the annual Smoky Hill River Festival, but forecasters at the U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita) predict heat indices to rise well above 100 degrees.

Meteorologists predict a 107-degree heat index in Salina tomorrow afternoon, right at the beginning of the SM Hanson Festival Jam. On Wednesday, June 12, NWS Wichita meteorologists issued a heat advisory lasting until 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12.

Heat-related illnesses can vary from minor ailments, such as a heat rash, to hospitalization from heat stroke. The Kansas Department of Health Environment (KDHE) stated in its <a href="https://keap.kdhe.ks.gov/Ephtm/EphtContent/documents/Toolkit%2020140519.pdf">"Kansas Extreme Heat Toolkit"</a> that early signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, visual disturbances, weakness, anxiety, confusion and vomiting.

Those with early signs of heat exhaustion should stop any activity, relocate to a shaded or indoor area and drink electrolyte-containing fluids like sports drinks, fruit juices or water.

KDHE staff also advise that older residents or those with preexisting health concerns are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses and should take precautionary measures before attending an outdoor event during a heat advisory.

UPDATED: 38th SM Hanson Festival Jam ends early due to rain

This is day 3 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Kansas wheat farmers are relieved to have a crop to harvest this year, remaining optimistic and pleasantly surprised with the good-yielding, good-quality crop, even as harvest progresses into areas where fields were impacted by an inconsistent mix of&nbsp;freeze damage, stripe rust pressure, rain and hail.&nbsp;

Harvest delivery is in full swing at Ardent Mills, which unloaded 150 trucks at its facility in Newton on Tuesday, June 11. Harvest is roughly 10 percent complete and Pam Bowles, assistant administrative manager, expects another week of peak harvest.&nbsp;

Farmers delivering wheat to the mill are reporting yields ranging from 40 bushels per acre up to 70 bushels per acre. At the mill, test weights are steady around 62 pounds per bushel and the protein average is 11.3 percent.&nbsp;

“Everyone seems to be in a good mood,” Bowles said. “We are planning for an above-average year this year.”&nbsp;

Troy Smith, who farms near Walton in Harvey County, is also pleasantly surprised with this year’s harvest, having started cutting his KS Zenda earlier this week — on track with normal pace. He attributes using cow manure as his primary fertilizer and heavy moisture over Thanksgiving weekend as keys to this year’s success.

“What made this year so good was the snow that came during the Iowa State/K-State football game, honestly!” he said.&nbsp;

His average yield is 67 bushels per acre with average test weight of 60.8 pounds per bushel and average protein at 13.13 percent.&nbsp;

Also in Harvey County, James Mosiman described this year’s harvest as a “night and day difference” compared to last year, speaking volumes about what good weather, sound farming practices and resilient varieties can produce when everything comes together.&nbsp;

The Mosiman family started harvesting on Thursday, June 6, about a week ahead of schedule. Beyond a delay from an inch of rain over last weekend, they have not encountered many challenges this year. He reported seeing small amounts of stripe rust, a common obstacle for many farmers this year.&nbsp;

Mosiman happily mentioned fields are yielding a promising 60 bushels per acre. Reflecting on the culmination of months of hard work, he summed this year’s harvest up by saying, “It’s just nice to cut a crop.”&nbsp;

In neighboring Reno County, Brandon Frederick is helping his grandfather VJ Blubaugh harvest wheat near Burrton. Storms the week before Memorial Day weekend blew over pivots on their irrigated wheat. On Thursday, June 13, they were cutting in a pocket where one side of the road got an inch of rain, but the other side had nothing more than sprinkle.&nbsp;

The operation grazes a lot of their wheat, which is in crop rotation with sudan. This year, they put out 105 head on the ground for 120 days, ending the grazing season with an average daily gain of 3.0 pounds.&nbsp;

Both grandfather and grandson are thrilled to harvest a crop this year, after having to swath the entirety of their wheat crop last year. Fields planted to WestBred varieties are yielding between 40 and 70 bushels per acre, with test weights of 61-62 pounds per bushel and proteins ranging from 12 to 12.3 percent.&nbsp;

“As much as I love having food for my cows, I love seeing a cash crop come up and go all the way to harvest,” Frederick said.&nbsp;

The harvest crew was hustling to repair combines and keep cutting ahead of forecasted thunderstorms in Barton County, according to Dean Stoskopf, who farms near Hoisington. His first two fields — both planted to PlainsGold Whistler — had yields of 45 and 50 bushels per acre. Moisture is between 11.5 and 14.5 percent with test weights ranging from 59.5 to 61.5 pounds per bushel and protein hitting 11.5 to 14 percent.&nbsp;

Yields are better than expected, but Stoskopf noted he is cutting some of his best fields first and expects yields to go down as harvest progresses. Within fields, he remarked that prolonged drought conditions and freeze damage caused a lot of inconsistency with stands, noting he feels like he’s cutting 60-bushel wheat or five-bushel wheat with nothing in between. Still, he feels optimistic after consecutive years of near-total crop failures and expects to be done cutting within two weeks — hopefully just in time to watch the grandkids show at the county fair the last week of June.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We have cut more wheat in the last day and a half than we did all last year,” Stoskopf said. “So far we’ve been pleasantly surprised with yields, but fields are highly variable.”&nbsp;

 </figure>JULIA DEBES Kansas WheatThis is day 3 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.Kansas wheat farmers are relieved to have a crop to harvest this year, remaining optimistic and pleasantly surprised with the good-yielding, good-quality crop, even as harvest progresses into areas where fields were impacted by an inconsistent mix of&nbsp;freeze damage, stripe rust pressure, rain and hail.&nbsp;Harvest delivery is in full swing at Ardent Mills, which unloaded 150 trucks at its facility in Newton on Tuesday, June 11. Harvest is roughly 10 percent complete and Pam Bowles, assistant administrative manager, expects another week of peak harvest.&nbsp;Farmers delivering wheat to the mill are reporting yields ranging from 40 bushels per acre up to 70 bushels per acre. At the mill, test weights are steady around 62 pounds per bushel and the protein average is 11.3 percent.&nbsp;“Everyone seems to be in a good mood,” Bowles said. “We are planning for an above-average year this year.”&nbsp;Troy Smith, who farms near Walton in Harvey County, is also pleasantly surprised with this year’s harvest, having started cutting his KS Zenda earlier this week — on track with normal pace. He attributes using cow manure as his primary fertilizer and heavy moisture over Thanksgiving weekend as keys to this year’s success.“What made this year so good was the snow that came during the Iowa State/K-State football game, honestly!” he said.&nbsp;His average yield is 67 bushels per acre with average test weight of 60.8 pounds per bushel and average protein at 13.13 percent.&nbsp;Also in Harvey County, James Mosiman described this year’s harvest as a “night and day difference” compared to last year, speaking volumes about what good weather, sound farming practices and resilient varieties can produce when everything comes together.&nbsp;The Mosiman family started harvesting on Thursday, June 6, about a week ahead of schedule. Beyond a delay from an inch of rain over last weekend, they have not encountered many challenges this year. He reported seeing small amounts of stripe rust, a common obstacle for many farmers this year.&nbsp;Mosiman happily mentioned fields are yielding a promising 60 bushels per acre. Reflecting on the culmination of months of hard work, he summed this year’s harvest up by saying, “It’s just nice to cut a crop.”&nbsp;In neighboring Reno County, Brandon Frederick is helping his grandfather VJ Blubaugh harvest wheat near Burrton. Storms the week before Memorial Day weekend blew over pivots on their irrigated wheat. On Thursday, June 13, they were cutting in a pocket where one side of the road got an inch of rain, but the other side had nothing more than sprinkle.&nbsp;The operation grazes a lot of their wheat, which is in crop rotation with sudan. This year, they put out 105 head on the ground for 120 days, ending the grazing season with an average daily gain of 3.0 pounds.&nbsp;Both grandfather and grandson are thrilled to harvest a crop this year, after having to swath the entirety of their wheat crop last year. Fields planted to WestBred varieties are yielding between 40 and 70 bushels per acre, with test weights of 61-62 pounds per bushel and proteins ranging from 12 to 12.3 percent.&nbsp;“As much as I love having food for my cows, I love seeing a cash crop come up and go all the way to harvest,” Frederick said.&nbsp;The harvest crew was hustling to repair combines and keep cutting ahead of forecasted thunderstorms in Barton County, according to Dean Stoskopf, who farms near Hoisington. His first two fields — both planted to PlainsGold Whistler — had yields of 45 and 50 bushels per acre. Moisture is between 11.5 and 14.5 percent with test weights ranging from 59.5 to 61.5 pounds per bushel and protein hitting 11.5 to 14 percent.&nbsp;Yields are better than expected, but Stoskopf noted he is cutting some of his best fields first and expects yields to go down as harvest progresses. Within fields, he remarked that prolonged drought conditions and freeze damage caused a lot of inconsistency with stands, noting he feels like he’s cutting 60-bushel wheat or five-bushel wheat with nothing in between. How about a free train ride for the family? It’s possible this summer, as the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad joins other popular tourism attractions across Kansas as a participant in the <a href="https://sunflowersummer.org/">“Sunflower Summer” program. </a>

As of May 24, school-aged Kansas kids and their parents can ride the A&amp;SV’s Flint Hills Express free of charge.

According to Julie Roller Weeks, the Director of the Abilene Conventions and Visitor’s Bureau, Sunflower Summer is an initiative to encourage Kansas families with school-aged children to discover and appreciate the wonders of Kansas while supporting the state’s tourism economy.

The program is sponsored by Kansas Tourism, a division of the Kansas Department of Commerce. In addition to the A&amp;SV, the Dickinson County Heritage Center and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum are participating in the program.

“This is an excellent way for families with school aged kids to spend a day in Abilene, taking in the colorful history of our town for little to no cost,” said Roller Weeks, who added that the program offers a way for area families to “staycation” in Abilene. “This opportunity allows us to welcome Kansas families to our area and provide them with an unforgettable experience.”

Roller Weeks said that eligible Kansas families can download the Sunflower Summer App at SunflowerSummer.org to claim tickets to participating venues. The 2024 Sunflower Summer season will run from May 24 to August 11.

“We’re really happy to participate in this program and support our museum partners here in town,” said Ross Boelling, President and Manager of the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. “We were recently named the state’s official heritage railroad, and we hope Sunflower Summer introduces our railroad to families across the state.”

Boelling specified that the free train rides are specifically for the A&amp;SV’s Flint Hills Express runs and are not applicable for the railroad’s Smoky Valley Limited dinner trains or special charters.

NWS-Wichita weekend weather forecast

Good news for Kansas City Royals fans, on Wednesday an MRI revealed that Hunter Renfroe's left big toe is not fractured, the team initially announced it was broken by a foul ball.

Renfroe was hurt Monday when he fouled off a pair of pitches against left-hander Carlos Rodón in the third inning. The outfielder got off to a slow start this season but had raised his batting average to .200 with six homers and 26 RBIs.

Kansas City said Renfroe is expected to miss two to three weeks, down from six to eight weeks.

Speaking of the Royals, Jose Trevino, Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton all homered last night as part of an 11-5 rout as the Royals dropped the series to the Yankees.

New York now boasts a major league best 49-21 record, the Royals will get one last crack at the pinstripe unit this afternoon at 1:10

And finally, last night also saw game three of this year’s NBA finals between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, and thanks to a late surge the Celtics were able to pull away to take a 3-0 series lead

Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown scored 31 and 30 respectively to avoid what would have been the biggest collapse in an NBA finals game this century, staving off a 21-point comeback bid. Boston can take the series in game four on Friday

Salina Parks and Recreation announced yesterday on social media that the playground replacement at Oxbow Park is almost complete. Salina Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hammond said the new playground pieces were installed at the end of May. 

"The original authorization from the City Commission was in December of last year, and then we ordered it, and it arrived," said Hammond. "We ordered that with installation included from the company we purchased it from."

Hammond said Oxbow Park is one of several park playgrounds being replaced as part of the City of Salina's Playground Improvement Plan.

"As we replace playgrounds, some of our top priorities are ensuring they are fully ADA accessible," Hammond said. "Anything that has a sand surface is not fully ADA accessible. We want to ensure that we replace that with rubber mulch, a wood fiber mulch, or a pore-in-place surface."

Hammond said the playground replaced at Oxbow Park was 26 years old.

Over the next two weeks, parks and recreation staff will add rubber mulch to the playground surface. Hammond said the new playground will have equipment for ages outside of the standard age range. 

"Many of our playground equipment in town is designed for ages five to 12. This playground has pieces for ages five to 12 and two to five," Hammond said. 

Salina residents won't have to wait long for the playground to be open to the public.

"I anticipate we have a reopening, weather dependent, for July 1," Hammond said. "That's my goal."
