Without seeking the reputation of a “chameleon” among actors, Ralph Fiennes has quietly built an awesome range: he made a big impression in Schindler’s List as sociopathic Nazi commandant Amon Goeth; over 30 years later, Fiennes portrays Cardinal Lawrence, a devout, contemplative figure who’s light years away from that breakthrough role. 

Goeth was the embodiment of evil, a man without conscience, while Cardinal Lawrence is all conscience—and conscientiousness, as it’s his task to oversee the vote for a new Pope when the old Pope dies under mysterious circumstances. 

The major pursuers of the job are openly progressive Cardinal Bellini (Stanley Tucci), pious power-seeker Trembley (John Lithgow), staunchly conservative Tedesco (Sergio Castellitto), and the rather odious Adeyemi (Lucian Msamati)—looking to become the first Black Pope. Based on the page-turner by Robert Harris, Conclave sounds like it would be a dry-as-dust procedural but in fact it’s supremely entertaining: a potent cocktail of political intrigue, mystery, conspiracy thriller, powerhouse acting, sober meditation on the sins of the Catholic Church, and a wry commentary on our current state of polarizing elections and candidates of questionable character. 

Directed by Edward Berger, who helmed the recent All Quiet on the Western Front adaptation, Conclave is precise and masterfully paced, making sure we’re fully invested in the characters (including Isabelle Rossellini as crusading Sister Agnes) before tightening the screws: who will become the new Pope? And more importantly: will that person reveal an evil side? 

Full of twists and turns, including a final revelation that’s legitimately surprising, Berger’s film is a thoughtful, intelligent look at what differentiates faith and religion—perfectly portrayed by Fiennes with rock-steady conviction and quiet charisma.

Benji Kaplan could be described as “a real pain.” An irreverent, clownish, bro-tastic man-child, Benji thrives on offending others but somehow gets away with it through sheer charisma and charm. Played by Kieran Culkin of Succession, Benji's sharp wit and disregard for social niceties make him a modern-day Groucho Marx. His cousin David, portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg, is far more uptight—a perfect foil reminiscent of Zeppo Marx.

Their dynamic is put to the test when they embark on a “Holocaust tour” of Poland to honor their late grandmother. Eisenberg, who also wrote and directed the film, balances biting humor with poignant emotional moments as the cousins navigate personal and historical trauma.

Salina Art Center Cinema presents: A Real Pain and The Activated Man

Get ready for a night of country music nostalgia as The Frontmen, featuring former lead singers Larry Stewart (Restless Heart), Richie McDonald (Lonestar), and Tim Rushlow (Little Texas), take the stage at the Stiefel Theatre on Saturday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m.

THE FRONTMEN – comprised of three former lead singers, Larry Stewart (Restless Heart), Richie McDonald (Lonestar) and Tim Rushlow (Little Texas) – is country music's hottest new supergroup. The men have already mastered the stage, succeeded on radio and nightly take sold-out audiences on a rollercoaster of 90’s nostalgic smash hits then transcend their past hit parade with fresh new and original songs that are unmistakably THE FRONTMEN today! THE FRONTMEN's magic formula harkens back to some of the biggest Rock groups of the 60’s and 70’s like The Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles where multiple lead singers like Joe Walsh, Glenn Frey and Don Henley have separate careers but join to together to create a sum bigger than its parts. They are a new act with a fresh sound but also an arsenal of hits.

Stewart's Restless Heart launched in 1984 with their self-titled debut album and went on to collect eight No. 1 hits and sing-along favorites, including "The Bluest Eyes in Texas," "I'll Still Be Loving You," "Why Does It Have to Be (Wrong or Right)," "Wheels," "Fast Movin' Train" and "A Tender Lie." Rushlow's Little Texas kicked off in 1991 with Top 10 hits "Some Guys Have All the Love” and "First Time for

Everything," then followed up with its debut album of the same name. Subsequent hits include "God Blessed Texas," "Kick a Little," "My Love," "What Might Have Been" and "Amy's Back in Austin." Little Texas won the Academy of Country Music's Top Vocal Group in 1993. 

McDonald joined Lonestar in 1992, and the group achieved nine No. 1 songs, including: "No News,” "Come Cryin' to Me," "What About Now," "I'm Already There," "My Front Porch Looking In," "Mr. Mom” and "Amazed" -- an eight-week No. 1 song and the most popular country song of 1999. "Amazed" was the Academy of Country Music's Single and Song of the Year in 1999, and Lonestar was the Top Vocal Group for the ACM and the Country Music Association in 2001. 

During periods of downtime over the years, and THE FRONTMEN organically built a concept they've been working toward for more than a decade. McDonald and Stewart first connected when they played a radio show in Louisiana. McDonald broached the idea with Stewart: three lead singers, one band and nothing but hits. Rushlow joined soon after, and the trio went on an extended international tour of military bases. The soldiers’ reaction affirmed what they already thought – people want to hear their songs.” It's these iconic songs that have been a part of people's lives over the past 20 or 30 years, and we saw the effect that it had on these men and women fighting for our freedom," McDonald said. "We knew we had to do it.”

THE FRONTMEN played sporadic shows together over the years while each continued with their various bands. When the pandemic struck, McDonald reevaluated how he wanted to spend his time. Stewart had recently stepped away from Restless Heart, and Rushlow shifted focus to THE FRONTMEN. With that, their side project became their main gig. "We jumped in with both feet," McDonald said. "I always tease Larry during the show and tell him, 'I grew up listening to your music.' He'll laugh and say, 'Man, you make me feel really old.'

Larry and Restless Heart really opened the door for Lonestar and Little Texas. We really respect one another. It's just a blast to be on stage every night to sing our hits and, and to harmonize with one another.”

Each man has a turn in the spotlight splitting vocal duties but all three sing non-stop throughout the entire set showcasing harmonies that only this combination of talent could achieve.

"Splitting the lead singing up keeps our vocal chords in tip top shape for all the harmonies in the set," Stewart said. Audiences receive a night of boot-scootin,' heart-popping nostalgia.

In 2023, THE FRONTMEN signed a major record deal with BBR Music Group / BMG Nashville. Stewart, McDonald and Rushlow, all major hit songwriters, released their debut album, THE FRONTMEN, in early 2024 with multi-genre musical heavyweight producer Mickey Jack Cones helming the project. The Frontmen’s debut self-titled album features nine original songs, as well as three Lonestar, Little Texas and Restless Heart No. 1 hits, re-recorded Frontmen-style. The Salina Public Library is pleased to announce&nbsp;Hidden Figures, an art exhibit by local artist Cary Brinegar, on display from&nbsp;December 6, 2024, to January 17, 2025. A public reception will be held on&nbsp;January 3, 2025, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;in the library gallery to celebrate the artist and their work.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cary Brinegar, a retired special educator and long-time Salina resident, is a member of the Kansas Figure Drawing Group and an experienced creator of abstract pen and ink “doodles.” Over the years, Brinegar has expanded their artistic range, incorporating figures and forms into his work while exploring diverse media.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Hidden Figures&nbsp;exhibit features a collection of figurative oil paintings created using pentimento—a technique where original elements of a painting reappear through overpainting—paired with found objects that evoke figurative forms. As Brinegar explains, “I approached this work as an exercise in reuse, color experimentation, and new techniques, in addition to my quest for a pleasing figurative abstraction.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Visitors will experience a unique blend of traditional and abstract art that challenges perception and celebrates creative evolution.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This event and exhibit are free and open to the public.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina Public Library hosts Cary Brinegar’s exhibit, 'Hidden Figures'

The holiday classic “The Nutcracker” has become a family tradition for many Salina residents.

This year’s Salina Symphony and Ballet Salina collaboration will involve more than 80 dancers from multiple studios in the region.

“Some of the dancers have participated in several productions of ‘The Nutcracker,’” said Tamara Howe, owner and operator of Ballet Salina, a division of Tamara Howe School of Dance. “Once they have performed one role, they’re excited to see what the next role up can be. Children grow up with it, and you see them positively influenced by the older dancers.”

The Salina Symphony and Ballet Salina will present two performances of “The Nutcracker”: Sat., Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. and Sun., Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.

Participants in this year’s production include dancers from Salina’s Tamara Howe School of Dance, Theatre Salina’s Center for Theatre Arts, and Della’s Dance Studio as well as ArtisTree (Hutchinson), Dancing Bird Studio (Minneapolis), and Activated Arts (Junction City).

The production also will feature select members from the Salina Symphony Youth Choir performing the “Snow Chorus”. Before each show, vocal music students from Kansas Wesleyan University will sing Christmas carols in the Stiefel Theatre lobby.

The student dancers have been rehearsing for the production every Saturday morning since the beginning of the school year, said Howe, who is choreographing the ballet with Ballet Salina artistic director Mara Klenda, based on original choreography created by Marius Petipa.

“Every time we present it, we change it a little bit to keep it fresh and exciting,” Howe said.

This is the second Salina production of “The Nutcracker” to be conducted by Salina Symphony music director Yaniv Segal, who said the ballet has “become synonymous with the holiday season” because of the holiday setting, lavish costumes and most importantly, the timeless music.

“Tchaikovsky has a gift for melody, and this particular score is remarkable, moving the story along and capturing characters in an amazing way,” he said. “The story is also fun and something everyone can understand.”

As a conductor, Segal said he has to keep a close eye on the dancers and how they move during each performance.

“I need to pay attention to whether they’re comfortable and able to move with grace,” he said. “I shouldn’t even be looking at the orchestra.”

Performing “The Nutcracker” with a live symphony orchestra is “how the show should be done,” Segal said.

“The dancers are so happy that we’re doing it with live music,” he said. “This is the kind of holiday show that brings people together. Concerts like this help create special memories.”

Guest artists for this year’s production will be Lucas Segovia, who will dance the role of the Cavalier, and Molly Groeschl, who dances the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Lucas is a former principal with the Joffrey Ballet and Molly performed principal roles with the Madison Ballet.

Professional dancers are contracted to portray the Cavalier and Sugar Plum Fairy because of the physical and technical challenges of the roles, Howe said.

This year will feature two “beautiful” performers, she said, who also happen to be “wonderful teachers.”

“Kids will have an opportunity to take a master class from them during their stay,” she said.

Howe said it’s been a thrill to watch the show come together during the last several months.

“It’s fun to see everyone’s hard work pay off,” she said. “It’ll be great for the community to see such a collaborative show, to see so many people on stage, so many faces of the community.”

“The Nutcracker” tells the story of Clara, a young girl who receives a nutcracker soldier as a Christmas present during a festive holiday gathering. When she falls asleep later in the evening, she enters a dream world where toys come to life and wage battle against an army of mice, headed by the fearsome Mouse King.

Clara and her nutcracker, who has been transformed into a prince, travel into the Land of Sweets, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy, before she awakens and finds it has all been a dream.

“The Nutcracker” ballet was inspired by the book “The Story of the Nutcracker” by French author Alexandre Dumas, which itself was an adaptation of the dark fairy tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” written in 1816 by E.T.A. Hoffman.

The original ballet adaptation was created by Marius Petipa and Len Ivanov, with original music by the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It was first performed in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892, and since its premiere has become a perennial holiday classic staged in theaters and concert halls throughout the world.

Tickets are selling fast for this year’s production of “The Nutcracker,” which is being sponsored by Bennington State Bank, JRI Hospitality and Salina Regional Health Center.

Tickets for each performance are $42 and $45 for adults and $25 for children and students. This concert is recommended for children ages 3 and above.

The award-winning world of Raquel Jaramillo Palacio's Wonder returns in White Bird, a powerful WWII drama directed by Marc Forster and starring Helen Mirren as Grandmère Sara Blum. This poignant tale, playing at the <a href="https://www.salinaartcenter.org/nowplaying">Salina Art Center Cinema</a>, 150 South Santa Fe Avenue in Salina from November 15-20, explores themes of compassion, resilience, and history lessons.

White Bird follows Sara Blum, Julian’s Grandmère from Wonder, as she recounts her harrowing experiences during the Holocaust. Through her story, Sara seeks to teach her intolerant grandson, Julian, a critical lesson about kindness and humanity.

The film’s narrative alternates between present-day scenes with Julian (Bryce Gheisar) and Grandmère and flashbacks to Sara's teenage years in a small French village. Teenage Sara (Ariella Glaser) lives a carefree life until the Nazi invasion changes everything. She is forced into hiding with the help of Julien (Orlando Schwerdt), an ostracized classmate who overcomes his own hardships to become a hero.

Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival is back for a thrilling third year, set to add more murals to the growing Salina Kanvas gallery. The festival features an impressive line-up of muralists invited from around the world, each infusing Salina Downtown with their own signature artistic styles.

"Our community is in for another amazing treat of art and culture,” said Eric Montoy, the festival's chief organizer.&nbsp;<br><br>Montoy said this year’s festival will host five artists who will bring to life five different locations in downtown Salina. Curated by Joe Iurato, the artists are selected based on their unique style, portfolio, and influence in the contemporary mural scene. Martha Cooper, the legendary photographer, will again be joining for her third year, capturing the magic of the festival.

First launched two years ago, the Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival has since been a platform for the public to witness exemplary work from diverse artists, the murals from past years still enhancing the beauty of Salina's downtown area. The 2024 festival promises an even richer visual feast not to be missed.

September 30 - October 5 – Artists will be painting at various locations in downtown Salina, and the murals will be in full swing. Mural locations will be announced at the start of the festival via social media.

October 4 - Join festival crew at 6:30 p.m. at the Salina Art Center for 'First Friday'. The highlight of the day will be the 2024 BOOM! His art, composed entirely of chalk, charcoal, and found objects, is celebrated globally, from the streets of Michigan to the beaches of California and squares in Sweden.

A leading figure in anamorphic street art, Leon Keer crafts thought-provoking pieces that explore themes like environmental sustainability. His art, both playful and poignant, is a commentary on the beauty and degradation of the world, making him a global ambassador of street art with stunning works in Europe, the United States, and beyond.

Known for his dynamic graffiti that bridges pop art and urban aesthetics, Sen2 has a rich history of collaborations, including with iconic artists and celebrities. His work on canvas combines bold graphic lettering, 3-D elements, and vibrant colors, reflecting his roots in New York graffiti and his evolution into a fine artist admired worldwide.

A self-taught muralist from Galicia, Spain, Lidia Cao is recognized for her expressive figures and faces rendered in a predominantly monochrome palette. Her work captures human emotion with minimalistic lines and textures, and she continues to expand her artistic horizons in muralism, leaving a distinct mark wherever she paints.

Known for his lively and colorful murals, Curtis Hylton infuses public spaces with energy through his bold designs. His murals are characterized by their vibrant hues and intricate details, engaging viewers and transforming their surroundings into immersive experiences.

Martha Cooper is a documentary photographer who has specialized in shooting urban vernacular art and architecture for over forty years. In 1977, Martha moved from Rhode Island to New York City and worked as a staff photographer at the NY Post for three years. 

During that time, she began to document graffiti subjects which led to her extensive coverage of early Hip Hop as it emerged from the Bronx. These photos, published worldwide, helped make Hip Hop the predominant international youth movement it is today.

Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival is back for a thrilling third year, set to add more murals to the growing Salina Kanvas gallery. Curated by Joe Iurato, the artists are selected based on their unique style, portfolio, and influence in the contemporary mural scene. Martha Cooper, the legendary photographer, will again be joining for her third year, capturing the magic of the festival.</p><p>First launched two years ago, the Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival has since been a platform for the public to witness exemplary work from diverse artists, the murals from past years still enhancing the beauty of Salina's downtown area.                     </figure><h2>Event timeline</h2><p>September 30 - October 5 – Artists will be painting at various locations in downtown Salina, and the murals will be in full swing. Mural locations will be announced at the start of the festival via social media.</p><p>October 4 - Join festival crew at 6:30 p.m. at the Salina Art Center for 'First Friday'. Boom! Salina Street Art & Mural Festival

The Salina Art Center is excited to announce the opening of three dynamic exhibitions: Ann Resnick: Tell Me What You Think of Me, Part One: Something to Divine (West Gallery), bARBER: Smile, porque nos pasó (South Gallery), and James Kinser &amp; Niki Grangruth: Muse (East Gallery). 

The exhibitions will be on view from Sept. 25 through Dec. 29, 2024, offering a range of perspectives on identity, perception and self-reflection.

The Salina Art Center will host a reception for Ann Resnick on Friday, Sept. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 242 S. Santa Fe Ave., celebrating the opening of Tell Me What You Think of Me, Part One: Something to Divine. The reception is free and open to the public, providing an opportunity to meet the artist, explore the exhibition and engage in conversations about the artwork. All gallery spaces will remain free and open throughout the exhibition’s run.

Curated by Ksenya Gurshtein, Resnick’s latest works explore the art of scrying, inviting viewers to interpret abstract, large-scale spray-painted images created from hand-drawn stencils. Visitors are encouraged to reflect on how personal perception shapes meaning, fostering both introspective and communal dialogue.

During the reception, guests will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive activities, including tarot readings, Myers-Briggs personality tests and handwriting sample submissions for a larger project. A custom survey station will be available for visitors to share their thoughts on the exhibition’s themes, contributing to a full-scale project set for 2026. Refreshments and drinks will be provided.

On Friday, December 20, at 7:30 p.m., the world-renowned Canadian band LEAHY will bring their energetic and dynamic performance to the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.
