Based on the original story by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne, this adaptation brings the eighth installment of the beloved Harry Potter series to life on the high school stage. Audiences can expect captivating performances and enchanting storytelling as students take on the challenge of conjuring magic through their creativity and theatrical talents.

The production will take place at the Salina Central High School Auditorium with performances scheduled for:

However, the students are up to the task, and we have some magic in store.”

Salina Central to stage 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' High School Edition

BY SALINA POST Two of Abilene’s long-standing nonprofit organizations are collaborating in 2025 to offer a unique blend of arts and local dining experiences.

Great Plains Theatre (GPT) and the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad (A&amp;SV) are launching six special weekends featuring Saturday matinee performances at GPT, followed by dinner aboard the Smoky Valley Limited dinner train. The meals will be provided by area restaurants and caterers.

Ross Boelling, A&amp;SV president and general manager, and Becky Dibben, GPT operations manager, developed the concept as a way to enhance Abilene’s tourism economy.

“This is another way for us to work with museums and other attractions here in Abilene to make our train rides even more special,” Boelling said. “Our 2025 schedule features remarkable entertainment options, and this program helps showcase Great Plains Theatre’s efforts to bring professional theater to Central Kansas.”

Dibben and GPT choreographer Dylan Blackwood emphasized the importance of promotional partnerships in boosting tourism. Dibben noted that visitors coming for theater often seek additional attractions, while Blackwood highlighted the growing interest from tourists visiting the Eisenhower Presidential Library.

Boelling has reserved the Smoky Valley Limited’s new Eveland Creek dining car, which seats 56 patrons. Those attending the GPT matinee will have priority seating in this car, while other diners will be seated in the Chicago and Enterprise cars.

“With limited seating, it’s best to book early,” Boelling said. Tickets for the matinee dinner train can only be purchased by calling the Great Plains Theatre box office at 785-263-4574. Patrons will choose their seating preference and menu options when making reservations.

Salina resident and retired schoolteacher Mike Garretson will celebrate the release of his debut novel,<a href="https://torchflamebooks.com/authors/mike-garretson/"> Lucky Duck: At the Mall, in the 80s, with a Dog,</a> with a book signing event at Red Fern Booksellers on Wednesday, March 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Set in Kansas, Lucky Duck takes readers through a crime-fiction story filled with sports, 1980s nostalgia, and an unusual canine companion. The novel follows Joel Howard, a recent college graduate and former benchwarmer on his small-town college basketball team. Optimistic about his future, Joel envisions a promising career and a stable relationship—until both slip away. Left working at a mall shoe store and desperate for change, he devises a plan to rob the mall’s bank on Black Friday, 1987.

Garretson, who started his writing career covering high school sports for local newspapers, now brings his love of storytelling to fiction. His debut novel captures the energy of the era, blending suspense with a strong sense of place in Salina, Hutchinson, and rural Kingman.

St. Paul and the Broken Bones, The Wood Brothers to perform at Stiefel Theatre

The Salina Senior Theatre Project (SSTP) is holding auditions for the upcoming spring production, Grandmothers Incorporated. Auditions will take place Monday, March 3, and Tuesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. at the Hawthorne, located at 715 North 9th Street.

The production, which promises a blend of suspense and humor, follows the misadventures of four friends who embark on a vacation in the woods. However, things take a wild turn when they arrive at the wrong cabin and discover a man tied up in the closet—a man who turns out to be a drug lord. What follows is a chaotic and hilarious display of senior vigilante justice.

There are four female roles and two male roles available for this production. Auditions are open to anyone aged 55 or older, regardless of prior theatre experience.

‘An Evening With Larry the Cable Guy’ comes to Salina’s Stiefel Theatre in June

By SALINA POST <a href="https://www.salinadowntown.org/">Salina Downtown Inc. </a>(SDI) is inviting Kansas-based artists to contribute to a downtown beautification effort through its Trash Corral Art Project. The initiative aims to enhance the appearance of trash enclosures across the district by transforming them into works of public art.

According to SDI, the project will focus on 16 trash corrals, with the City of Salina providing pre-primed panels, necessary hardware, and installation services. Artists selected for the project will have the opportunity to receive up to $3,000 in funding, with the possibility of additional support from local partnerships.

To be considered, artists must be Kansas residents with experience in public art or outdoor art projects. They must also be able to transport materials to and from Salina. Proposals should include a detailed sketch of the art design, a portfolio showcasing relevant experience, a timeline for completion, and a proposed location for work. Designs should be formatted as PDFs and scaled to fit the provided panels, which measure approximately 4 feet by 6 feet each. Some corrals contain up to 15 individual panels, equating to around 100 feet of running panel space per enclosure.

SDI is reviewing proposals on a rolling basis, with approval subject to a committee that meets monthly. The approval process may take up to 60 days, and artists may be asked to provide additional information or design modifications.

 </figure>By SALINA POST <a href="https://www.salinadowntown.org/">Salina Downtown Inc. </a>(SDI) is inviting Kansas-based artists to contribute to a downtown beautification effort through its Trash Corral Art Project. The initiative aims to enhance the appearance of trash enclosures across the district by transforming them into works of public art.According to SDI, the project will focus on 16 trash corrals, with the City of Salina providing pre-primed panels, necessary hardware, and installation services. Artists selected for the project will have the opportunity to receive up to $3,000 in funding, with the possibility of additional support from local partnerships.To be considered, artists must be Kansas residents with experience in public art or outdoor art projects. They must also be able to transport materials to and from Salina. Proposals should include a detailed sketch of the art design, a portfolio showcasing relevant experience, a timeline for completion, and a proposed location for work. Designs should be formatted as PDFs and scaled to fit the provided panels, which measure approximately 4 feet by 6 feet each. Some corrals contain up to 15 individual panels, equating to around 100 feet of running panel space per enclosure.SDI is reviewing proposals on a rolling basis, with approval subject to a committee that meets monthly. Kansas Wesleyan’s strong music tradition will be on full display this spring with a wide range of&nbsp;musical events open to the public. Highlights include two full symphonic orchestra concerts, collaboration with Theatre Salina and performances featuring area high school students, and the usual ensemble concerts and recitals.

“It’s such a busy semester,” said Michelle Dolan, executive director of&nbsp;music at KWU. "We run the gamut from challenging classical to Broadway to jazz to percussion. We’re so excited for our first full semester in the newly renovated Sams Chapel! The space and the sound are outstanding for&nbsp;music.”&nbsp;

Instrumental concerts kick off with Salina Strings Day on Feb. 13. High school students from the region will come together for a day of workshops and rehearsal, culminating in a concert at 7 p.m. in Sams Chapel.

Two days later, on Feb.15, high school and college percussion students have their turn at the Kansas Day of Percussion, an afternoon of clinics and concerts with guest clinicians.

The KWU String Orchestra will join with members of the other ensembles to form a full symphonic orchestra to present a concert featuring pianist Gustavo do Carmo, KWU assistant professor of&nbsp;Music, at 4 p.m. March 2. Do Carmo will play&nbsp;Piano Concerto in A minor&nbsp;by Edvard Grieg.

The KWU Symphonic Orchestra will combine again for a concert at 7 p.m. May 6.

In April, KWU will present two instrumental concerts: the Jazz Ensemble at 7 p.m. on April 22 and the Percussion Ensemble at 7 p.m. on April 24, both in Sams Chapel.&nbsp;

The choral department will be busy, starting with Salina Choral Day on March 3, which is for regional high school students.&nbsp;

Then, from April 3–6, 10–13 and 17–19, Kansas Wesleyan will partner with Theatre Salina for the Broadway&nbsp;musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Members of the Wesleyan Chorale have roles in the cast, including several of the leads.

The KWU Philharmonic Choir will join the Salina Symphony Orchestra to perform Mozart’s “Requiem” on May 3 at Brown Grand Theatre in Concordia and May 4 in the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

The semester will end with the spring choir concert at 7 p.m. on May 9 in Sams Chapel.

KWU announces dynamic spring concert season

Students from Sacred Heart Jr/Sr High School and St. Mary’s Grade School will bring 'A Year with Frog and Toad,' a musical adaptation of Arnold Lobel’s classic children’s books, to the stage next week.

The production will be performed at Salina Central’s Auditorium on February 7 and 8 at 7 p.m., with a matinee showing on February 9 at 2 p.m. The family-friendly musical follows the adventures of Frog and Toad, two friends who navigate the seasons together, highlighting themes of friendship, kindness, and embracing differences.

Director Matea Gregg said she is excited about the collaboration between students from both schools and noted the involvement of 11th-grade students in the cast.

“It has been such a joy working with students from both Sacred Heart High School and St. Mary’s Grade School," Gregg said. "The collaboration between our Salina Catholic schools has been inspiring, and I know the audience will feel the energy and enthusiasm from every student on stage."

Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s students to perform 'A Year with Frog and Toad'

Salina Central Mustangs Theatre Troupe 639 will present Hadestown: Teen Edition by Anaïs Mitchell on Thursday, January 30, Friday, January 31, and Saturday, February 1, at 7:00 p.m. Performances will take place at the Central High School Auditorium. Special licensing arrangements for this production were made through Concord Theatricals.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. They can be purchased one hour before each performance at the auditorium box office, located at the south entrance of the school, or online at <a href="https://our.show/chstroupe639/hadestown">https://our.show/chstroupe639/hadestown</a>.

There is no service fee for online purchases, as the theatre troupe absorbs all credit processing or ticket fees. Audience members are encouraged to skip the line by purchasing tickets online, which can be scanned at the door.

This production will include haze, dry ice, and some flashing lights. Accessible seating is available at the rear of the auditorium. The runtime is approximately two hours, including a 15-minute intermission.

Students have been collaborating with Maggie Spicer-Brown from Theatre Salina as their dance choreographer since late November. They’ve also been working with vocal music teacher Ryan Holmquist and orchestra teacher Lindsay Modin. Unique to this production, the pit orchestra will perform on stage with the actors, while the vocal ensemble will be placed on risers in the pit.

High schools across the nation were offered the rare opportunity to license Hadestown: Teen Edition, and Salina Central is proud to bring this adaptation to Salina audiences. The folk opera, based on the Greek mythology of Orpheus and Eurydice, delivers universal and timely themes through jazz-inspired, sung-through storytelling that keeps audiences engaged throughout.

According to Concord Theatricals, Hadestown: Teen Edition is a full-length adaptation of Anaïs Mitchell’s celebrated musical, modified for teen actors and family audiences. The story intertwines the love stories of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice and the immortal King Hades and Lady Persephone. Drawing on classic American folk traditions and New Orleans jazz, the musical explores themes of industry versus nature, doubt versus faith, and fear versus love.

Hadestown originated as a community theater project in 2006 and a studio album in 2010. It premiered in 2016 at New York Theatre Workshop, becoming the longest-running show in the theater’s history. The production has since seen success in Canada, London, and Broadway, opening at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17, 2019. In 2024, it made its West End debut at London’s Lyric Theatre.

Salina Central High School Theatre presents ‘Hadestown: Teen Edition’

Fans of legendary rock band Led Zeppelin will have a chance to experience their music live like never before when&nbsp;Get The Led Out&nbsp;(GTLO) takes the stage at the Stiefel Theatre on May 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m. for $40. Fans can purchase tickets in person at the Stiefel Theatre Box Office, online at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stiefeltheatre.org/">www.stiefeltheatre.org</a>, or by calling 785-827-1998.

Dubbed “The American Led Zeppelin,” the Philadelphia-based tribute band is known for its electrifying performances that capture the essence of Zeppelin’s studio recordings. Unlike many tribute acts, GTLO doesn’t rely on costumes or impersonations. Instead, they focus on delivering the depth, detail, and energy of the original tracks, using multiple instrumentalists to faithfully recreate the band’s signature sound.

“When you hear three guitars on the album, we deliver three guitarists on stage,” said lead vocalist Paul Sinclair.

GTLO’s setlist spans Zeppelin’s most bombastic anthems, mystical folk-inspired tunes, and deeper cuts rarely performed live. The show also features an acoustic set with fan-favorite songs like&nbsp;Tangerine&nbsp;and&nbsp;Hey Hey What Can I Do.

With a national touring history that includes performances at major venues across the country, GTLO continues to bring Led Zeppelin’s music to new generations. Sinclair believes Zeppelin’s influence will stand the test of time.

“Led Zeppelin are sort of the classical composers of the rock era,” he said. “I believe 100 years from now they will be looked at as the Bach or Beethoven of our time.”

A&nbsp;Get The Led Out&nbsp;concert promises an unforgettable night of rock nostalgia, paying tribute to one of the most influential bands in music history.

<a href="https://salinatheatre.com/project/soprano/#1624046130752-e32e98fc-adb4">Theatre Salina</a> is gearing up to bring laughter and chaos to the stage with Lend Me a Soprano, a screwball comedy by acclaimed playwright Ken Ludwig. Based on Ludwig’s Tony Award-winning Lend Me a Tenor, this updated version puts women in leading roles, offering a fresh and hilarious twist on a classic farce.

Set in 1934, the story centers on Lucille Wiley, the fiery manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, as she prepares for a one-night-only performance of Carmen featuring the world-class soprano Elena Firenzi. Chaos ensues when Elena arrives late, her jealous husband Pasquale causes an uproar, and Lucille’s unassuming but determined assistant, Jo, must step up to save the day.

Directed by John Hendrick, the talented cast includes:

Anna Pauscher Morawitz is an interdisciplinary artist who creates cyanotype prints and fiber art inspired by her garden and the natural world. She is also the mind behind Enna and the Snapdragons, a musical project that combines viola, ukulele, banjo, vocals, and even the saw to craft melodies inspired by traditional pop and everyday moments..

Rachel Miller is a Salina-based English teacher and artist who began her creative journey at the age of four. Passionate about both music and art, Miller pursued her talents through high school, eventually earning a vocal scholarship to Kansas Wesleyan University, where she continued to develop her artistry.

Theatre Salina debuts screwball comedy ‘Lend Me a Soprano' Friday

The Salina Public Library is proud to host “50 in 25,” an art exhibit presented by the Salina Central High School Visual Arts Department. This showcase features the talents of top junior and senior students, highlighting their creativity and artistic growth over the past year.

Under the guidance of instructor Larry Cullins, students have explored originality and variety through class assignments, independent projects, and their own artistic discoveries. Many participants are Advanced Placement Art students preparing to submit a portfolio of 15 pieces for potential college credit by May 1, 2025. 

Additionally, several promising juniors are exhibiting alongside their upperclassmen peers, demonstrating their own exceptional talent and vision.

The exhibit will be on display in the library's art gallery from Jan. 31 through March 14. The community is invited to a reception on Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., to meet the artists and view their artwork. Light refreshments will be served.

“We are looking forward to showcasing out-of-the-box work from these talented young artists,” said Cullins. “This exhibit offers a glimpse into their creativity and dedication, and we hope the community enjoys experiencing it as much as the students enjoyed creating it.”

Clay Walker set to perform at Stiefel Theatre in April

Theater lovers and art lovers unite! A beautiful collection of artwork by the talented Art is Ageless® artists from Salina Presbyterian Manor is now on exhibit at Theatre Salina.&nbsp;

The exhibit accompanies the theatre’s main stage production of “Birthday Candles,” a play that runs January 3 – 19.&nbsp;

The exhibit is the brainchild of Meghan Hessman, a local artist and the art curator for the gallery at Theatre Salina, and Lucy Kollhoff, an enthusiastic participant in the Art is Ageless juried competition. Art is Ageless® encourages artists 65 and older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the annual calendar. The program started in 1980 as a fundraising tool for PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®).&nbsp;

Meghan and Lucy teamed up with Salina Presbyterian Manor to find artists from the senior living community who wanted to show their work. It all came together on opening night Friday, January 3.&nbsp;

“I thought the staff did a great job hanging and displaying my quilts,” said Martha Oakes, an award-winning quilter and a resident of the Villas at Salina Presbyterian Manor. “I thought it was nice to have the art show coincide with opening night.”&nbsp;

Artist Dean Groves shares this sentiment. “I was very pleased by the way the show turned out. I’m grateful to be included” he said. Groves is a resident at Salina Presbyterian Manor. More than 200 of his paintings are owned by others.&nbsp;

As you wander through the exhibit, you’ll also see works of art from Margie Reed (knitting), Don Schroeder (mixed media), and Lucy Kollhoff (painting). In all, you can view 18 pieces of art from the Art is Ageless competition as well as the 2025 Art is Ageless calendar.&nbsp;

Visitors will also be able to learn about Salina Presbyterian Manor’s fundraising campaign Preserving Legacies, Enriching Lives. The $10-million campaign is more than a renovation – it’s designed to enhance the lifestyles of the residents with beautiful and functional spaces, including a new arts and craft room.&nbsp;

The exhibit runs until January 19, 2025.&nbsp;

 Ageless creativity showcased by Salina Presbyterian Manor artists at Theatre Salina

<a href="http://salinasymphony.org">&nbsp;The Salina Symphony </a>will kick off 2025 with “Rocking Tchaikovsky” on Sun., Jan. 12, at 4 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre.

Uplifting tunes and exuberant rhythms will abound in this concert of epic proportions. The concert will open with “…the light that breathes…,” a new work by Maestro Segal. “The piece begins with textures and hidden melodies as if searching for the path forward,” said Segal. “[It] ends in a glorious celebration of light and life.”

The principal cellist of The Cleveland Orchestra, Mark Kosower, will then take the stage to perform Friedrich Gulda’s Cello Concerto, a wild and catchy work described by the composer as “jazz, a minuet, rock, a smidgen of polka, and a march.”

On the second half, Tchaikovsky’s monumental and heroic Fifth Symphony paints the ultimate picture of victory over strife. From the lush orchestration to the soaring melodies, you won’t want this concert to end!

Mark Kosower joined The Cleveland Orchestra as principal cello in 2010. Described as “a virtuoso of staggering prowess” by The Plain Dealer, he is a consummate artist, equally known around the world as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician.

Alongside solo appearances with The Cleveland Orchestra, Kosower has performed alongside the symphony orchestras of Detroit, Houston, Minnesota, Oregon, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Phoenix and Seattle as well as orchestras around the world.

The votes are brought into the chamber in special mahogany boxes that are used for the occasion.Bipartisan representatives of both chambers read the results out loud and do an official count. The vice president, as president of the Senate, presides over the session and declares the winner.The Constitution requires Congress to meet and count the electoral votes. If there is a tie, then the House decides the presidency, with each congressional delegation having one vote. That hasn’t happened since the 1800s, and won't happen this time because Trump’s electoral win over Harris was decisive, 312-226.<h2>How has it changed since the last time?</h2>Congress&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-susan-collins-west-virginia-c9c15562ad910bbc0ba6ef1eecbfc158">tightened the rules for the certification</a>&nbsp;after the violence of 2021 and Trump’s attempts to usurp the process.In particular, the revised Electoral Count Act&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-donald-trump-e4366ca9e350ef87ebbb7638517cbde3">passed in 2022</a>&nbsp;more explicitly defines the role of the vice president after Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jan-6-trump-pence-jd-vance-prosecution-f78cf222187b271e0ba0bb684110455e">aggressively</a><a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-joe-biden-donald-trump-senate-elections-elections-aaa00b96179c454426453a99ca1e2e30">pushed</a>&nbsp;Pence to try and object to the Republican's defeat — an action that would have gone far beyond Pence's ceremonial role. Pence rebuffed Trump and ultimately gaveled down his own defeat. Harris will do the same.The updated law clarifies that the vice president does not have the power to determine the results on Jan. 6.Harris and Pence were not the first vice presidents to be put in the uncomfortable position of presiding over their own defeats. In 2001, Vice President Al Gore presided over the counting of the 2000 presidential election that he narrowly lost to Republican George W. Bush. Gore had to gavel several Democrats’ objections out of order.In 2017, Biden as vice president presided over the count that declared Trump the winner. Biden also shot down objections from House Democrats that did not have any Senate support.<h2>How does the session unfold?</h2>The presiding officer opens and presents the certificates of the electoral votes in alphabetical order of the states.The appointed “tellers” from the House and Senate, members of both parties, then read each certificate out loud and record and count the votes. At the end, the presiding officer announces who has won the majority votes for both president and vice president.<h2>What if there's an objection?</h2>After a teller reads the certificate from any state, a lawmaker can stand up and object to that state’s vote on any grounds. But the presiding officer will not hear the objection unless it is in writing and signed by one-fifth of each chamber.That threshold is significantly higher than what came before. Previously, a successful objection only required support from one member of the Senate and one member of the House. Lawmakers raised the threshold in the 2022 law to make objections more difficult.If any objection reaches the threshold — something not expected this time — the joint session suspends and the House and Senate go into separate sessions to consider it. For the objection to be sustained, both chambers must uphold it by a simple majority vote. If they do not agree, the original electoral votes are counted with no changes.In 2021, both the House and Senate&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-confirm-joe-biden-78104aea082995bbd7412a6e6cd13818'">rejected challenges</a>&nbsp;to the electoral votes in Arizona and Pennsylvania.Before 2021, the last time that such an objection was considered had been 2005, when Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio and Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, both Democrats, objected to Ohio’s electoral votes, claiming there were voting irregularities. Both the House and Senate debated the objection and easily rejected it. It was only the second time such a vote had occurred.<h2>Once Congress counts the votes, what's next?</h2>After Congress certifies the vote, the president is inaugurated on the west front of the Capitol on Jan. 20.The joint session is the last official chance for objections, beyond any challenges in court. Harris has conceded and never disputed Trump’s win.
