●Highland Avenue from W. Crawford Street to W. Prescott Avenue

●W. South Street from S. Ninth to S. Santa Fe Avenue

●Walnut Street railroad tracks to S. Ninth

●Fox Run area south of W. Schilling Road between Foxboro Drive and Canterbury Drive

The work will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

This $491,000 project is part of the City's $5.3 million 2023 street maintenance program.

City of Salina announces crack sealing work

You know spring is near when it's time to sign up for K-State Research and Extension's popular Walk Kansas program.

"With warmer weather right around the corner, I'm looking forward to getting back outside and walking. The simple activity of walking has so many wonderful health benefits," said Lisa Newman, family and community wellness extension agent for the Central Kansas District.

Two-thirds of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis, can be prevented or delayed by lifestyle changes. Such changes include regularly going for walks or other exercise. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week or about 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

Walk Kansas is a team-based challenge that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike, swim or do whatever they need to do to live more healthfully, according to information from K-State Research and Extension.

“Walk Kansas was founded on the principle that if teams of six people would meet the minimum guidelines for physical activity over eight weeks, they could collectively and virtually walk across the state of Kansas, which is 423 miles,” said Sharolyn Jackson, the state leader of the Walk Kansas program.

The 2023 Walk Kansas program kicks off on March 26 and will run eight weeks through May 20. Registration begins Wednesday. To register online, <a href="https://www.walkkansasonline.org/">click here</a>. The cost per person is $10; t-shirts can be purchased for a separate charge.

Walk Kansas also offers a solo challenge for those who don’t have a team or just prefer to take on the challenge themselves. Participants do not have to live in Kansas to be on a team or to do the solo challenge.

"In addition to being active, I love the social capital aspect of Walk Kansas," Newman said. "The relationships among those participating are so valuable. Whether it's team members walking together or a solo participant waving at nearby neighbors they might not otherwise see very often, Walk Kansas offers something for everyone."

While participants track their minutes of activity, which are converted into virtual miles of activity, they also are asked to report the number of cups of fruits, vegetables, and water they consume weekly. Additionally, participants are encouraged to add some type of strength exercise to their routine, KSRE noted.

From April 2 through May 14 – Weeks 2 through 7 of Walk Kansas – organizers will offer a weekly webinar on healthy eating, focusing on the Mediterranean diet, Jackson said. The course is called Med Instead of Med to reflect the goal to help participants learn ways to potentially replace medications with healthy eating.

“Walk Kansas, holistically, really is a chronic disease prevention program or a way to delay the onset of chronic disease,” Jackson said. “For those already with a chronic disease, they can learn ways to manage it better through physical activity and healthy eating. We often think about (diseases) that might be genetic, or it’s just your family history. But the reality is that two-thirds of chronic diseases can be prevented or delayed by these lifestyle changes.”

Saline County closing part of S. Burma Road for tree trimming

Salina Regional Health Center announced today that it is merging its two urgent care clinics - StatCare and Urgent Care - into one facility.

Beginning March 8, all patients will be seen at the 2265 S. Ninth Street facility, SRHC noted in a news release. The clinic will be open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. seven days a week. In addition to walk-in visits, patients also will have the option of virtual visits.

"Merging the two clinics allows for improved access and expanding services, such as offering virtual care visits. This move will also allow for future expansion of occupational health services and improved access and opportunities to the patients and companies it serves. Occupational Health Partners currently operates out of the Urgent Care Clinic," SRHC noted.

The Saline County Expo Center is accepting applications for the Oliver Haag Scholarship for the 2023 school year.

Saline County students graduating high school in 2023 and entering college or a vocational school in the fall and majoring in an agricultural field are eligible to apply. The criteria for this scholarship are community involvement, strong school work ethics, and the desire to continue a post-secondary education in agriculture.

The scholarship is eligible for renewal for up to three years by maintaining a 3.0 GPA and continued enrollment in an agricultural field. Since the Saline County Commission established this scholarship in the name of Oliver Haag in 2001, 47 students have been awarded funds for their agricultural studies.

The deadline for applications is March 6, 2023.

Saline County: Deadline for Oliver Haag Scholarship March 6

Mark your calendars! One of the larger spring farm shows in the Midwest is coming to Salina in March.

The 58th annual Mid America Farm Expo is scheduled for March 22-24, the Salina Chamber of Commerce announced this morning. Hours will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. March 22-23 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. March 24.

The expo, which draws more than 5,000 attendees over three days, will be headquartered at Tony's Pizza Events Center (TPEC), 800 The Midway, with displays also across the street in the Saline County Livestock &amp; Expo Center's Ag Hall, and outdoors in front of Ag Hall and in the TPEC west parking lot.

The latest in farm technology, equipment, and supplies will be on display in approximately 250 exhibits, including some expo exhibit favorites as well as several new exhibits, the chamber noted.

The expo also will feature a variety of seminars by agriculture leaders, including the following.

Sports on KINA this week

A number of 4-H&nbsp;members will compete in music, drama, dance, project talks, demonstrations, and illustrated talks during the annual Central Kansas Extension District 4-H&nbsp;Club Day on Saturday.

The event is scheduled for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday in Salina South Middle School, 2015 Simmons Street, and is open to the public. Those attending are asked to enter on the east side of the building at 2040 S. Fourth Street.

According to information from the extension district, 4-H&nbsp;Club Day is the second largest competition for&nbsp;4-H&nbsp;members in the district with the Saline County Tri-Rivers Fair and Ottawa County Fair being the largest in our area.

ABILENE - Tours of President Dwight Eisenhower's boyhood home are once again available to the public.

Extensive preservation work including exterior lead paint abatement and maintenance updates closed the home for several months. The project is now complete and guests are welcome to once again step back in time and see the home where our nation's 34th President grew up.

"These repairs were necessary for both the preservation of this historic home and, more importantly, our ability to continue sharing this history for future generations," said Library Director Dawn Hammatt.

Scheduled tours are available Tuesday through Sunday and are limited to 10 guests per time slot. Tickets may only be purchased onsite. 

This project was funded through a combination of federal and private funds from the Eisenhower Foundation.&nbsp;

Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.This $491,000 project is part of the City's $5.3 million 2023 street maintenance program.

City of Salina announces street crack sealing work

Growing a vegetable garden on one of the Salina Community Garden plots definitely has many benefits.&nbsp; For many people one of the biggest benefits is simply more space.&nbsp; Many city backyards may have shade trees or other obstacles that make growing a nice garden difficult.&nbsp;&nbsp; In these situations, a community garden plot may offer the perfect solution.&nbsp;

Fortunately, here in Salina we have community gardens that offer great gardening opportunities for many residents.&nbsp; Each year the City of Salina and K-State Research and Extension-Central Kansas District sponsor three community gardens throughout the city that make garden plots available to over 100 local families. Every year, these families benefit from better tasting, more nutritious food, good exercise, and the camaraderie of community gardening.&nbsp;

Each garden plot has access to water and hoses are provided.&nbsp; Material such as straw or wood chips to mulch with is also provided (as it is available) as are wheelbarrows with which to move the mulch or other gardening materials.&nbsp; Gardeners themselves are responsible for all other tools and gardening supplies to care for their plot.

The largest of the Salina Community Garden sites is at the former&nbsp;Stimmel&nbsp;Elementary School.&nbsp; There are 64 garden plots at the&nbsp;Stimmel&nbsp;School site - each about 600 sq. ft. in size - and many are still available.&nbsp;&nbsp; Other garden sites include the Carver Center Community Garden and the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank Community Garden.&nbsp; If you would like to use a community garden plot, come into the K-State Research &amp; Extension office to sign up.&nbsp; Available plots are first-come, first-served.&nbsp; 

To check on availability, you can also call the Extension office at 785-309-5850.&nbsp; The extension office is located on the K-State Salina campus in Salina at 2218&nbsp;Scanlan&nbsp;Avenue in the Extension Center building on the north side of campus.&nbsp; Look for our purple sign.&nbsp; 

The share of maintenance costs for each garden is $20 and must be paid when the plot is reserved.

It is always fun to see new folks enjoying the outdoors and making new friends around a common interest.&nbsp; Many even use their gardens for the benefit of others and enjoy sharing the fruit of their labor with other family or friends.&nbsp; Don’t let the lack of space in your backyard be an excuse any longer.&nbsp; You might find that a community garden plot and all its benefits are too good an opportunity to pass up.&nbsp; K-State Research and Extension is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

Every year, these families benefit from better tasting, more nutritious food, good exercise, and the camaraderie of community gardening.&nbsp;Each garden plot has access to water and hoses are provided.&nbsp; Material such as straw or wood chips to mulch with is also provided (as it is available) as are wheelbarrows with which to move the mulch or other gardening materials.&nbsp; Gardeners themselves are responsible for all other tools and gardening supplies to care for their plot.The largest of the Salina Community Garden sites is at the former&nbsp;Stimmel&nbsp;Elementary School.&nbsp; There are 64 garden plots at the&nbsp;Stimmel&nbsp;School site - each about 600 sq. ft. in size - and many are still available.&nbsp;&nbsp; Other garden sites include the Carver Center Community Garden and the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank Community Garden.&nbsp; If you would like to use a community garden plot, come into the K-State Research &amp; Extension office to sign up.&nbsp; Available plots are first-come, first-served.&nbsp; To check on availability, you can also call the Extension office at 785-309-5850.&nbsp; The extension office is located on the K-State Salina campus in Salina at 2218&nbsp;Scanlan&nbsp;Avenue in the Extension Center building on the north side of campus.&nbsp; Look for our purple sign.&nbsp; The share of maintenance costs for each garden is $20 and must be paid when the plot is reserved.It is always fun to see new folks enjoying the outdoors and making new friends around a common interest.&nbsp; Many even use their gardens for the benefit of others and enjoy sharing the fruit of their labor with other family or friends.&nbsp; Don’t let the lack of space in your backyard be an excuse any longer.&nbsp; You might find that a community garden plot and all its benefits are too good an opportunity to pass up.&nbsp; K-State Research and Extension is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
